This was written in response to 9-11 and to his father who died in the same year. He wrote it to sing only on his USO tours(and there were many of those) but the commandant of the Marines told him he should put this song out for everyone to hear if he really wanted to help the war effort. He put it out the next year and it was an instant hit. I am sure you know by now that he lost his fight with stomach cancer and died in Feb. He was a great patriot and will be greatly missed.

I can relate to this song, a kid who i graduate with in 2003 unfortunately passed away in 2004 in Iraq , we wasn't friends but I'll see everyday on the school bus , also the second verse i can relate to because my uncle ( my dad's brother) passed away from cancer in 2022 , just like in the song my uncle never give up , he was still the loveable, prankster he always been, even through he did called his wife some unpresnt names , during his battle , but through it all and even till today she still loves him and likes to remember the good times and tell stories about him that will either make you smile or laugh. the fiddle player and the steal guitar player are sisters. they are 2 of the original 3 member of the dixie chicks. Natalie, the lead singer came along later after the original lead singer left.

Charlies Blount (yes that is the correct spelling, looking it up) did not have Alzheimer's, he was dying of Kidney failure/stage 4 kidney disease and as a previous donor himself, he only had the one left, hence he was dying. Thankfully he got a transplant in time and survived! 2 clueless idiots! 👎
