Peter Murphy was the lead singer of Bauhaus... and they... had the Gothic Classic Anthem of All Time: "Bela Lugosi's Dead." It was their homage to the very strange Hungarian actor who was the first to play Dracula and did so many times; his Dracula persona started to take over more of his real life... he was buried in his Dracula costume! Whether you like it or not (Jay maybe), it is a must must must to get an understanding of the 80s post-punk, alternative and Gothic movements. It is dark, mysterious, creepy and beautiful.

Bela Lugosi is Dead live at RIverside to see how Daniel Ash creates those special effects so unique to Bauhaus and their other extremely creative, experimental bands Love and Rockets (All in my Mind, Mirror People, Kundalini Express, Motorcycle...) and Tones on Tail (Go!, There's only One, Burning Skies..._ Go! was a club hit along with New Order's Blue Monday, Depeche Mode, The Cure... in the 80's and well into the 90's.

For Bauhaus, I'd start with the more accessible She's in Parties, and the banger Sanity Assassin. Cuts you Up is about finding your path in life through all of its twists and turns. I find you in the morning, after dreams of distant signs. You pour yourself over me, like the sun through the blinds. Murphy has some of the most poetic lyircs. I'd follow up with Marlene Dietrich's Favourite Poem and A Strange Kind of Love. He was often compared to Bowie (appeared in one his moves as well), and Murphy's band Bauhaus pioneer Post-Punk along with Gang of Four, The Cure and Joy Division/New Order in the late 70's.

BAUHAUS: Sanity Assassin, Double Dare, She's in Parties, Slice of Life... LOVE and ROCKETS (= Bauhaus minus Peter Murphy): So Alive, Mirror People, Kundalini Express, All in my Mind... TONES ON TAIL (= Love and Rockets minus David J plus Glenn Campling): Go! , There's Only One, Performance... Daniel Ash is the founding member of all 3 and the most underrated, most experimental guitarist. On par creatively with Bowie, The Cure, Depeche Mode, Radiohead.

The other pioneering POST-PUNK band besides BAUHAUS and THE CURE to consider are GANG OF FOUR (formed in '76: I Love a Man in a Uniform live at Old Grey Whistle Test, as BBC show, What We All Want (studio version is a banger), Damaged Goods), and JOY DIVISION but they may be too dark and gloomy at this stage, so I'd suggerst continuing with more of NEW ORDER for a while (Joy Division after the death of singer Ian Curtis). .

Three other former Bauhaus members - David J, Kevin Haskins (David J’s brother), and Daniel Ash - went on to form the group Love and Rockets, which is still one of my favorite groups to this day! Please, please, please, check out Love and Rockets’ songs “No New Tale to Tell” as well as their insane cover of “Ball of Confusion.” Both are absolute bangers!!!

As others here are saying, Murphy is best known as lead singer of the band Bauhaus, kind of the seminal Goth band, whose signature song was "Bela Lugosi's Dead" from 1979. This 1990 solo effort from Murphy was actually a big radio hit, even in the US. And yeah, early Cure has a similar atmospheric sound, as does a lot of Echo and the Bunnymen, the Chameleons, early Cocteau Twins, and even The Decemberists' kind of eighties-revival 2018 song "Severed." The David Bowie look and sound that Jordan noted is especially striking when you compare this song to Bowie's avant-garde late seventies/early eighties stuff like "Ashes to Ashes." I think both of you would probably also enjoy eighties Goth-ish band the Sisters of Mercy and their 1983 song "The Temple of Love."

Every day so far in April have been insane coincidences for me and here is another one! Last night I was literally scrolling Peter Murphy, Bauhaus and Sisters of Mercy videos to teach someone who thought goth was created by Marilyn Manson. My first thought was I'd LOVE to see Amber and Jay react to "Cuts You Up" but they'll never get around to it. Seeing this, I had to do a double take! I saw Peter Murphy live twice and he was stellar, and then I saw Bauhaus at Coachella (two things I never thought possible) and they absolutely stole the show from an unbelievable lineup--NIN, Coldplay, Weezer, etc. etc. etc. Fantastic to see you guys unearth Peter Murphy now, just as you have Echo & the Bunnymen recently.

Heck yeah! I note that the line “look for what seems out of place” is interesting. I’ve found that to be the key to noticing that you’re in a dream WHILE you are dreaming. If you can do that- if you can realize you are dreaming - without waking up - then you can fly in your dream. The rules of real life don’t apply. It’s called lucid dreaming and it takes mental effort to get there. But it can be done.

Nevertheless, his voice is so powerfull and you guys pin-point very well when comparing his style to David Bowie's. By the way, you can check a wonderful movie from 1983 called "The hunger". Omg, I loooove and adore Peter Murphy! You have *no* idea how huge this song was on college/alternative radio when it came out in '89. Peter Murphy was already an alt legend as one of the founders (along with Daniel Ash) of Bauhaus, a band that's often credited as being the first goth band. J is spot on with the David Bowie comparison as Peter is heavily influenced by Bowie. Not a criticism at all, just a fact. What a great hero to emulate, right? Peter, whose hair was normally dyed black, is also known for his high, sharp cheekbones. Those 'bones could cut glass! 😄 Love him. Glad you guys enjoyed one of my most favorite songs. 🕊

Peter Murphy was (is, they still perform occasionally) the lead singer of Bauhaus, as well as a prolific solo artist. I think this is from the album "Deep"? He's done some really interesting work solo - the album "Love Hysteria" is great, as is the eastern-influenced "Dust". He was also part of the deeply odd but fantastic Dali's Car with Mick Karn of the group Japan. Other songs to check out - Bauhaus "Bela Lugosi's Dead" (the live version from "Press The Eject And Give Me The Tape"), probably the ultimate goth rock anthem, Bauhaus "She's In Parties", another classic, the Bauhaus cover of Ziggy Stardust (much heavier than the Bowie version), Dali's Car "Dali's Car", (obscure but so inventive and strange), and solo work like "Dragnet Drag", "Indigo Eyes", "My Last Two Weeks", "Blind Sublime" or "Fake Sparkle or Golden Dust?"

Peter Murphy is incredible. Dark/goth sounds. He formed the band Bauhaus, which is an amazing band that really brought Goth music into the forefront to America. It was a bigger and more appreciated style of music in Britain but it took time to take foot in the U.S. MTV helped to give them visuals and gain popularity, along with Sisters of Mercy, Siouxsie & the Banshees, The Damned and the Cure. But what I always loved about Bauhaus and Peter Murphy is his voice. That deep voice with so much angst and dread cuts you up (wink).

Outstanding. Peter Murphy was originally the vocalist for one of the first (some say THE first) UK goth bands in the late 70s/ early 80's, Bauhaus. Their songs may be a bit too dark, raw and experimental for reactions (although they did have some fun, poppy songs buried in all the creepy, moody soundscapes, ie. "Kick In The Eye", "Spirit", "She's In Parties", "Lagartija Nick", "The Sanity Assassin", etc.). When they split up, the other 3 members of the group- guitarist Daniel Ash, and brothers David J (bass) and Kevins Haskins (drums) became Love and Rockets. Murphy released a couple solo albums (this is from his 3rd album, 1990's "Deep")- this was his first song to get a lot of airplay in the US (at least on stations that leaned toward the alternative genre). I actuallysaw him on this tour - got a t-shirt from it in a box somewhere (although there's no way it would fit me know- well, maybe as a headband). And Jay is right- Murphy was a definite Bowie fan- in fact, a good next reaction for him might be Bauhaus' 1982 cover of Bowie's "Ziggy Stardust".

I was 19 years old when that song and video came out. I believe i have the CD single in my archives, and the video i recorded on a VHS tape multiple times. I call that style of music melodic Gothic rock. For myself, Murphy's vocal style is a Baritone counterpart to the Pet Shop Boy's Neil Tennant's tenor voice. He is also in a band called Bauhaus. They are Goth music, culture and fandom icons. Cuts You Up is pure nostalgia to me now. Beautiful. Thanks for this one!

I've seen Peter Murphy live a few times and he frequently does Bowie covers. You should check out Bauhaus, his first band. They were some of the original Goth bands of the early 80s, along with The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and Joy Division. My favorite Bauhaus songs; She's in Parties and Bela Lugosi's Dead

This guy... he means so much to me, and this album... time and place... music has a way. So many folks know of Bauhaus by name only, and even fewer of Peter's decision to go solo and pop. He brought a tone to pop music that it desperately needed. Hard to believe this was 1988. He has several tracks (Indigo Eyes, Scarlet Thing..) that are worth exploring for folks who are interested.

i love how everyone is giving homage to Bauhaus...they along with souxie sue and the cure....were a part of the post punk into goth movement of the late 70s early 80s. peter murphy as a solo artist had success in the late 80s with this song, all night long and a strange kind of love....but if you, jay,go down the goth well, bela lugosis dead is the theme song of a generation of post punk kids that wanted and escape from disco and punk....more atmospheric like joy division and definitely worth a listen....you can also listen to them doing 'ziggy stardust' 'shes in parties' ' telegram sam'....if you do bela lagosis dead....you need to do their gotham concert version....you will thank me for it if you do!!! ✌️

Whenever y'all like one of "my" bands/artists, I feel like a proud parent or something. Hah! Peter Murphy and Bauhaus were definitely one of my goth influences when I was in high school and college, and then from Bauhaus sprang the amazing bands Tones On Tail and Love & Rockets. You should DEFINITELY listen to both of them, and as others have suggested, check out "Bela Lugosi's Dead" by Bauhaus. It's a long one - around nine minutes, but talk about falling into a trance. It'll definitely take you there.
