I have been a huge Larkin Poe fan for over ten years and it is so good to hear other people’s appreciation of their immense talent. Two sisters that are about to crash through that glass ceiling and announce themselves to the world. Such talent. Oh and the “paint the roses…off with their heads” … is a reference to the queen in Alice in wonderland. Hence the connection with Mad as a Hatter. In England hat makers were renowned for madness due to the glue and mercury vapours that they inhaled during the process of manufacturing the hats. Thank you for appreciating and pushing their name forward.

@surfjayce - Always happy to help folks to good music and musicians! Larkin Poe 2 sisters, the Lovell sisters, have been independent artists since 2010. 4 EPs, 7 albums, Larkin Poe is an American roots blues rock band. Rebecca(guitars, mandolin, banjo, keys, digital programming and lead vocals) and Megan(lap steel slide, dobro and harmony vocals) have their KZread channel with many original songs as well as covers. Their recordings are predominately produced by just the two, occasionally featuring a guest, but when they go on tour, they will have bass and drums support. They are now performing around the US and Aus/NZ and later this year the EU/UK again. This clip from 2016, is actually 2 songs - “Tom Devil” was written by Ed Lewis, which segues into an original song “I Love You For The Way That You...” kzread.info/dash/bejne/mqSIx5WCiNyZgbA.html

No, think of Alice in Wonderland for the lyric references. Also, the small instrument was a Mandolin. The girls have done some great shows with pretty big named stars rocking out hard, worth a look.

wow, This interpretation is exactly the reason why Lennon wrote I Am the Walrus. OK She tries not to worry because she knows mental illness can be hereditary and she has 2 grandparents suffering from it. The Mad Hatter is a character from Alice in Wonderland and a fairly famous line from that story is the Red Queen demanding Off with his/her head all the time and she also ordered all white roses be painted red. Those lines are just some clever tie ins to the title of the song

The title of the song, too, comes from "Alice in Wonderland". The Mad Hatter is one of the main characters, made mad by the fumes he inhaled while making hats (a 19th-century hazard). And, the character who cries, "Off with their heads!" is the completely insane Red Queen, who wants her minions to paint all the white roses red because she's ... the _Red_ Queen, not the White Queen, her sister.

There were originally three sisters, and they performed as "The Lovell Sisters" from about 2006-2009. They did mostly Bluegrass, but had a varied range even then, including doing a cover of a Jimi Hendrix song. Oldest sister Jessica (with the violin in the vid below) resigned from the group, got married and moved to Canada in 2009. Rebecca and Megan carried on, rebranded themselves and changed and broadened their style. kzread.info/dash/bejne/kXyhj8NqZdfUiLw.html

These young women are so talented !!! Mad as a Hatter is masterpiece level , musical art created by two young amazing young ladies ! They are currently touring in the US and soon will be out in their European tour again (15 countries I think). Touring and performing seem to be their passion, but there is no doubt about their passion and talent for music. Was fortunate to see them live in San Diego in February and can highly recommend catching their performance. One of the best parts for me is that they sound as good live as they do on recordings. You can't get that without a lot of talent and hard work.Great reaction Rosalie, your take was like mine but much more eloquently stated. Thank you. If you dig in a bit, you will find tons of on live performances, interviews and background that has made me fall in love with these two and their attitudes and dedication. They are already very well received but in my mind should be on a infinately higher strata. Rosalie, here is another version of Mad as a Hatter with the accompaniment of NuDecoEnsemble kzread.info/dash/bejne/iqJkzc2nntbThpc.html. Simply perfection by all participants.

Wonderful reaction and analysis, as usual, Rosalie. Rebecca and Megan are special, kind-hearted human beings that are as genuine as it comes. Attend a live show if ever possible, they make you feel like family, and is always a joyous occasion. "Mad As a Hatter" is the oldest of their original songs they still perform, with Rebecca having written it when 15, even before Larkin Poe was formed. It was not on an album until 2021 with the live album with the Nu Deco chamber Orchestra, entitled "Paint The Roses". It's worth watching the video from the concert on KZread. Even though they are self-produced on their own Tricki Woo Records, they have toured with artists as diverse as Bob Seger, Elvis Costello, and Keith Urban, recorded with Steven Tyler and Billy Gibbons. Their writing is smart, with a different spin on roots music, and their cover channel is stellar, with almost all just the 2 of them recorded on their phone. Many of their covers I prefer to the originals.

Not sure if anyone said anything about the instrument Rebecca is playing, so I'm just gonna pipe up. She's playing a mandolin. This is my favorite live version because of the mandolin. Love how it sounds.

Found'em Lovell Sisters 4 or 5 years ago. It was Venom and Faith at the time, I think. I was blown away, as a music lover, by the level of skills they were offering their audience. It started with Mad as a Hatter at the Convent, I'd bet. I since then saw them perform their latest album "Blood Harmony" at the Olympia's Theater, Paris France. The girls are so impressively dedicated to their art, so lively, so inspired ! I'm trying to keep myself curious enough to constantly search for new sounds (I recently discovered the Teskey Brothers and Jackie Venson I'm listening to a lot) but, still, the Lovell Sisters keep coming and feeding my playlist on and on. KZread's algorithm seems not to be able to diminish there presence in that playlist I've been spending 8 years now to build :)

And I know, Josh and Sam Teskey, and Jackie Venson are no Americana People ^^) But I was missing having the 60's Instrumental Soul Music style and, more comprehensively, the Golden Age of Black-American Instrumental prodigies's talent in my ears. So, these Australian bros and this Texan girl found naturally their place in my music addicted heart :)

Think about this for a second. Elvis Costello is a mentor Derek Trucks, THE ABSOLUTE BEST Slide Guitarist of a Generation says Megan is THE BEST Slide Lap Guitarist Bob Seger sought them out to be his opening act for the few concerts he does during the summers. His only request was they had to play Bleach Blonde Bottle Blues EVERY NIGHT and he stood off stage for the performance EVERY SINGLE TIME! With those kind of people showering you with praise you know before even hearing them perform they are something special.

Been listening to them for over a decade now. Love them!!! They do more to keep the blues alive than just about anyone. They actually started out in a family bluegrass band. Rebecca, besides being a great singer and guitar player, is a world-class mandolin player like in this song, Wade in the Water. kzread.info/dash/bejne/kYiL1smQm7vVmto.html

Rosalie, the Mad as a Hatter video was from some years ago, but if you’d like something more recent, Rebecca recently flew in from touring to sing with Elvis Costello (Elvis discovered them when they were still the Lovell Sisters doing bluegrass), and joined Elvis for a different demonstration of her singing range. I think you’ll be similarly impressed. kzread.info/dash/bejne/fa58zbyng8rAk7Q.html

They've found a solid following country wide, but have not really reached the level of success they so deserve. I have every single album on vinyl - I can't get enough and find that with each album, they add more to their wide range of styles. I love the gritty southern blues - stripped down and raw. I would try "Holy Ghost Fire", or "Preachin Blues" - their newest would be "Summertime Sunset" - but there are so many more... I've seen them live, and if you have the chance, grab the tickets. One of the best concerts I've ever seen. They are flawless.

I believe she's playing a Mandolin. Love your reactions! Love finding new artists, through you. 👍♥️🤘I do have a question for you though. I was sent this song on my feed labeled 'New song by The Warning' kzread.info/dash/bejne/Z6mtk8qSp8vNaNI.html There is something so familiar about parts of the song. I was wondering what your take on it is? Again, you don't have to put it on your channel as it's so time consuming. Plus I'm not sure if it's their song or a cover. But I would love to know what you think.
