I'm not German, I am Norwegian but I see a sense of pride underlying the whole video in that through all of the things "Germania" had to go through she continues on through all of it. She's never destroyed by the destruction, sometimes she resists it like in the Magna Germania scene, sometimes shes a victim of it like the Introduction of Christianity, or embraces it through the Wagner phase or the Nazi phase, but in the end she persists.

Hello from Serbia! Just one thing - Rammstein is a band that talks about dark stuff and stuff that most people don't want or are afraid to talk about. So, one thing you cannot expect from them is positivity. And maybe it is not your way of looking on things but I personally love them for that. They will punch you in face with lyrics and make you think. As someone who is into psichology, I think that Rammstein might be interesting to you with their topics, double meanings, playing with words, metaphors. Just keep in mind that it will always be dark. If you want to check more, my recommendation would be official video for "Zeit".

The song is about the ambivalent relationship of Rammstein and many Germans to their country, because of the violent and cruel history with extensive human crimes ("red line of violence through german history"), especially in recent history. A little addition to the Hindenburg scene. At least, how I see the reference there. The Hindenburg airship explosion was horrible, but in my opinion, there's a deeper layer to that. In 1933, then-president of Germany, Paul von Hindenburg ( skipping full name and titles ), appointed Adolf Hitler to the chancellor of Germany. And as history showed, we went down in flames.

Rammstein hat sich echt gesteigert in seiner Qualität. Deutschland ist nur einer der Songs die mich in den letzten Jahren mehr und mehr beeindruckt haben. Den Song Zeit sollte Man hierbei aber keinesfalls vergessen. Sehr Emotional.

Ich konnte mit der Musik von Rammstein nichts anfangen. Ich kannte Sonne aber alles andere eher nicht. Bei KZread habe ich ein Cover von Donaukinder und ein weiteres Cover von Engel gesehen und angefangen mich mehr zu interessieren, dann kam Deutschland und ich wurde ein Fan. Zeit ist für mich der beste Song und das beste Video in dem bisherigen Jahrtausend , inzwischen bin ich fasziniert von der Band. Ich kann ich sie 2023 in Budapest sehen und kann den Termin kaum abwarten.

Rammstein has always been and always will be one of my favorite bands.

Every country has its cross to bear. One big difference between Germany and other countries is that Germany's dark history is so recent that the actual victims and perpetrators, until recently, are still alive. It's not something you read about in history books, but it's your parents or grandparents, your neighbours, friends.

This is so true. But also is true, that Germany tried to overcome this past, had apologized for it, prosecuted many people, lost country. Other states didn't do this.

I can't get enough of people experiencing Rammstein for the first time. Flying from Dublin to Paris to see them in July. Cannot f**king wait.

Rammstein is named after the Ramstein airfield where in the 80s a deadly airshow disaster happened. "That piano arrangement is beautiful" - it's a piano arrangement of one of their biggest hits, Sonne.

Hi Rosalie, wonderful reaction, very reflective. This video is a Masterpiece of Art. BTW it´s not just a Lady, it´s Germania, the personification of the german nation. She leads us through the german history. She is mostly dressed in gold and red and she herself is black - so you have the colours of the german flag: black, red and gold. You didn´t liked the scene where she is giving birth to puppies? I love it! For me (means my interpretation) this scene shows the birth of the modern Germany after WWII. I think she is giving birth to the basic laws (Grundgesetze) and the obstetrician wears a red robe, like the judges from the german constitutional court. They where guarding these basic laws (Human dignity, freedom of speech and religion etc.). These very strong constitutional rights are such a positive things about Germany and that´s a reason why I love to live in Germany. I think it´s why Rammstein wants to love Germany as well.

That´s left open. She is in the coffin of snow white. As we all know snow white was kissed to life again, so we have to watch out!!!

As a history buff and huge fan of German history from the Holy Roman empire all the way to the Germany we have today. This song speaks to me on so many levels ♥

It's important to consider the band member's origin in East Germany. As such I personally share many of their perspectives. I do not see what they do as 'shock tactics'. There are fools who say this is Rammstein glorifying the unfortunate events of the past, but this is clearly a sober, and honest acceptance of everything, both good and bad. The band always rejects the impulse to turn away from the truth, or avoid saying what some find distasteful.

Rammstein are able to expose humankind’s flaws and eccentricities so perfectly. They’re in your face, ironic, crude, comedic, talented as hell, and above all, always honest.

Hi, I'm Dutch although living VERY close to Germany (the whole Ruhrgebiet comes to my town for shopping every Saturday - Butterfahrt), and I must say that you should know that the band members view everything through East German perspective - since they all (or most of them) have lived their lives behind the Iron Curtain. You can see an excerpt of the East German era as well in the video. Now, about the lyrics, they DO say: "mann kann dich lieben, und will dich hassen", so it's not just that he's singing that he can't give his love, but actually that he's torn apart between those feelings. Furthermore: they wanted a black woman to represent Germania so that they could worship her, as she is the personification of the country they both hate and love. And what @Asbjorg Kerstin says down below: the whole video is made with a sense of pride in spite of the horrors from the past. (it almost feels like I'm lecturing a German citizen on German history)

I'm basicly with you - as a German myself. Well, I'm from Schleswig Holstein, so I might be cultural closer to the Dutches or Danishes than to most Germans =D But you are right, you don't lecture her about German history, but about German soul. And Ramstein really hit the point. this goes back to the beginning of Germany - Schopenhauer allready declared national pride as miserable proud, because only the dregs can be proud of something they share with millions of others. The idea of Germany was a history of love-hate from the beginning untill now. And some historical events didn't make it easier ;)

Being Dutch growing up near Germany, having an EXTREMELY nasty youth of racism towards German's and it wasn't even intentional, it was just surrounding pressure. I've never met a German whom i didn't find absolutely lovely! Most likely being part German, this song song also gives me a lot of pride. History can be good and bad, but history is rich and we can always learn from it! What i find most shocking about this entire video, is you starting talking with an American accent, ending it by speaking German and following it up with American-German accent! Absolutely a lovely reaction, as i hate most people pausing every other second, you just take it in and speak about it afterwards! Hope your channel grows big! Much love from The Netherlands.

Also, music videos are very spectacular what makes the whole experience much more entertaining 😊 "Deutschland" is a true masterpiece - so many gems to explore, endless references and phenomenal music ❤ I really love how they changed "Deutschland über alles" (which may have neutral meaning, like "Germany is for us more important than anything else") to "über allen" which is clearly nationalist "Germany is superior to everyone". So subtle, so genious! Till is a real wordsmith. Rammstein, since their first songs, always were sending a message hidden between the lines. Even rhe most straightforward songs have something that makes you thing about... I hope you will try some more Rammstein songs, like amazing ballad "Zeit", spectacular "Adieu" or aggressive "Angst". Rammstein has a lot of wordplay or double meanings in many of their songs. Like in "Du Haust" where they take the traditional wedding vows and turns it on it's head. All countries have dark things in their histories, but people go beyond that. Like the song "Anthem" from the Broadway musical Chess, where the main antagonist says "No man, no madness. Long before nation's lines were drawn. When no flags flew, when no nations stood, my land was born. And you ask me why I love her, through wars, death and despair. She is the constant, we who don't care. And you ask me will I leave her. But how? I cross all he borders, but I'm still there now. Let men's petty nations tear themselves apart. My land's only borders lye around my heart." Though he is singing about Russia.

that introduction, that battle, is the part of the german foundation, the unification as brothers in arms as the northern german tribes fought the roman invaders succesfully in a natural trap. They had defeated a 1/3 of the roman empire military which means 6 famous roman elite legions in the teutoburger forrest. That battle happened in Kalkriese and has been searched for 20 centuries cause its location had been lost and forgotten. Hitler would have been proud to have found that but it was a british officer of the rhine army stationed during cold war in Osnabrück who had found it in 1987. Everyone knew about the big vicitory and the fate of the free german tribes compared to the tribes under roman occupation in the south, south and west of rhine and danube. You can see this borderline even today cause the names of cities like Regensburg have latin origins which was called in latin castra regina or Cologne / Köln and a lot others. German unification of the 35 kingdoms inside the german territory took centuries to happen and many wars to unite these. These 35 were the roots of german advantages in science if you remember the nobel price winners in the beginning: mostly germans cause the german kings competed against each other and therefore each of them must have his own university therefore you find so many so old universities with such a huge history and of cause nobel price winners. And to make it happen to unite germany by Bismarck it needed an icon , the hero, Hermann or Arminius, the leader that fought and won the battle - but later had been treasoned. Great video and great introduction over 20 centuries.

The outro song is the piano version of "Sonne", which wouldn't be a bad candidate for another R+ reaction. It's a pretty hard sounding song with a pretty amusing take on an old fairy tale.

Hi, I'm from Germany. Rammstein is playing a classic "Industrial Metal" style. A 50-50 mix of synthesizers and hard metal guitars. A big part of the German history in one video. The black woman as Germania. Germania is the personification of the German nation. It isn't and wasn't a goddess or Joan of Arc. The glass coffin: It is Little Snow White from the Grimm-fairytales....and from their own video "Sonne". Only with black skin and in space. The piano song at the end is the song "Sonne", too. The words "Germania Magna" at the beginning are a Roman name for the area of Germany, that wasn't conquered by the Roman Empire at that time. Germania Superior and Germania Inferior were the Roman conquered areas (Roman provinces) of Germany. The line in this song "So jung und doch so alt" (So young and yet so old) means: Germany as a unified state is very young. A unified German nation is only existing from 1871 onwards. Before that year of unification Germany was made of countless, little mini-states and the people identified first and foremost as Prussians, Hessians, Saxons etc, etc, etc. and only in a second line of thought they had a lose sense of being somehow Germans, too, as a kind of unifying second identity. So the area & the landscape where the Germans are living and the Germans themselves as a people...are thousands of years old. But only recently, in 1871, there was a unified Germany as one single state. So Germany as a unified state is very young...and at the same time it is thousands of years old. The battle of the Teutoburg forest against the Romans (and Rammstein as Roman soldiers and Germans alike). That battle is of ABSOLUTE importance for the German history. The hanged bodies in the trees were the beaten Roman soldiers, who were gruesome sacrificed to the Germanic gods...and were partly nailed to the trees. The Varus-(Teutoburg)-Battle was already in 9 AD. In 16 AD were the vengeance campaigns of commanding field general Germanicus under Emperor Tiberius Augustus. Therefore we see here the arrival of the Roman troops of Germanicus and they are watching their dead comrades hanging in the trees or getting their heads chopped off (for nailing them to the trees). In reality the Romans under Germanicus found only the bones of the Varus army in the various ways they were slaughtered, sacrificed and displayed at the trees. Slaves were liberated even decades after the battle. After the scenes with the Romans we saw the Hindenburg Zeppelin disaster (the burning Zeppelin in the background). The moustaches and clothing from the fight scene are from WWI and post WWI years. From the working class people in WWI and the roaring 20's. In the WWII years later on this kind of big bushy moustache was already out of fashion. The falling banknotes in the prison are not about corruption. That scene is about the hyper-inflation of the 1920's, that took away the savings of the Germans and left them in deep poverty and desperation. One had to pay a loaf of bread with a handcart full of nearly worthless banknotes back then and it hit the German people deep down inside and in their souls. Especially the poor ones and the simple workers. The V2 rocket (first manmade object in space) as technical triumph of the German spirit...and at the same time the killing of the concentration camp prisoners in the bunker factories below the mountains during the production of that rocket. This scene in the video could be a representation of a very specific concentration camp. It was "Mittelbau-Dora" below the Kohnstein mountain. A mixture between a big, huge bunker factory for V1 and V2 rockets and a concentration camp. The concentration camp inmates had several different markings for different kinds of convicts and their "crimes" sown to their chests, like it was in reality, too. A pink triangle for homosexuals, the star of David for Jews and two of them were marked with the double-triangles for Jehovas Whitnesses. The book burnings of the Nazis and the burning of the witches of the church. In the same scene with the book burning there is EVEN MORE going on. The cooperation of the church with the Nazis, when the priest with the cross embraces the Nazi SA-man. The scene with the sign with the Hammer and a pair of compasses in a circle of wheat is the sign of the GDR (DDR). The socialist German state in the east that existed before the German reunification. Therefore it was Karl Marx in the background in the scene with the tank (not the scene at the concentration camp). The scene with Rammstein wielding guns (the pumpgun) and taking Germania hostage was about leftwing terrorism of the 1970's. The terrorists were called the RAF (Rote Armee Fraktion). My interpretation of the red scanner-like beams: There are two different kinds of beams. The massive straight red light beam that goes up into the heavens AND there were those smaller, thinner "scanner" beams. Aliens (or humans from the future) are scanning the whole German history. Like some real scientists are scanning and excarvating ancient Mexican or Egyptian statues, for example. The massive red light beam is the red ribbon of time that ties together all the historical events. PS: As for the dogs: Germans are fanatical dog lovers. We are a dog-owner nation. The dog is a firm part of Germany. PPS: They didn't eat the body of the woman and her inner organs, even if it really looked that way. They were eating the national dish of Germany, that was put on the body of the black woman: Sauerkraut, Kassler & sausages. In my opinion it symbolizes the church eating itself fat on the goods and values and food of Germany during the simple people (farmers, simple workers etc) lived a long time in a kind of hell of poverty and serfdom (the red fetish area below the table with Germania on it). But that eating scene could indeed have a double meaning. It could represent the 30 years war, that was fought for religious reasons and depopulated large areas of Germany. It forced the people to commit canibalism because nobody was there anymore to produce food. Except the fat, wealthy people of the church, of course. They were still able to eat enough. Only the simple people at the bottom (farmers etc) died from hunger and had to fight and die in that war. The 30 years war was the biggest catastrophe in Germany until WWI happened. PPPS: The short scene with the dogs and their gas masks = WWI, where in reality animals (messenger dogs & horses) AND soldiers were wearing gas masks, too. PPPPS: The puppies at the end are Leonberger dogs. The Leonbergers nearly went extinct during WWI and WWII. PPPPPS: The black woman in the prison was dressed in a Prussian uniform with a Prussian helmet. Till sings the famous, often misinterpreted, line of the "Deutschlandlied" (Song of the Germans), that is not forbidden in Germany but simply isn't sung anymore in our modern national anthem. Till sings in his version the line "Deutschland über allen" (Germany above everybody) What is a BIG change to the real line in the orginal Deutschlandlied-song. In the original Deutschlandlied song it is written as "Deutschland über alles" (Germany above everything). The real, whole line of that old Deutschlandlied goes "Deutschland, Deutschland über alles. Über alles in der Welt" (Germany, Germany above everything. Above everything in the world). This line is often misinterpreted by many people as chauvinism and as a looking down upon all other countries on this planet. But that is wrong and not many people know about that in Germany and elsewhere. The writer of that famous line didn't meant it in a chauvinistic way. When that song was written, Germany was divided into umphteenth mini-states, what made Germany relative powerless and defenseless. Therefore the task of German unification was the goal above any other goal for all Germans (at least the writer of the song meant it that way). So the main goal for all Germans had to be the united Germany. The goal of "(united) Germany above everything else". That was, how that line was meant by the writer of the song. The line isn't forbidden, like many people wrongly think. It's simply not sung anymore and not part of the official anthem of modern Germany anymore. This has NOT its reason in the seemingly chauvinist meaning of "Deutschland über alles", like many people wrongly think. This whole stanza of the Deutschlandlied isn't sung anymore, because in other parts of the stanza are borders and landscapes mentioned, that aren't German borders and landscapes anymore. We want to live in peace with the people and countries, who are now living in those former German lands and therefore we don't sing about those old borders and landscapes anymore. It has nothing to do with the "Deutschland über alles" line in that stanza, like many people wrongly are thinking. Finally: The scenes I'm now talking about are pretty dark and low light. The WWII submarine in the submarine bunker during the astronauts are walking by with the glass coffin. I think, the choice of the black woman as main actress was made, because: a) it makes any accusations of racism and fascism against Rammstein useless b) she represents one colour of the German flag and she is wearing the rest of the colours of our German flag as makeup and jewellery and clothes on her body: Black, Red and Gold c) it provokes many people EVEN MORE 😄 Greetings Mega

PS: KZread didn't allow me to integrate this information into the bigger text (above) for unknown reasons, therefore I'm posting it here: The troops, who smashed the Jewish shops during the Kristallnacht (not shown in the video) were SA (Sturmabteilung) in brown uniform and not the later SS (Schutzstaffel) in the black uniform. The SA did all the dirty work at the beginning of the Nazi rise to power...until the "Night of the long knives", an inner-Nazi power struggle, happened. The head of the SA (Ernst Röhm) was killed and from then on the SA was turned more and more into the SS under Himmler. The book burnings were part of the early Nazi years, too, and were done by the SA, too. One can see the SA burning the books and Till is watching it in a brown SA uniform. Both, Kristallnacht and book burnings were different things and happened at different times. The book burnings happened over a longer timespan at different locations at different times during the Kristallnacht was one big "event" that happened at one single day. Kristallnacht means "Crystal Night" and was called that way, because the smashed shop windows of the Jewish shops looked like thousands of crystals on the ground. But in the Rammstein video I've only seen the book burnings. PPS: The two beer drinking soldiers to the left side of the table, where Germania is lying on and where the priests are eating Sauerkraut & Sausages from her body, are not French soldiers and they aren't representing the French revolution. Those two beer drinking soldiers are Prussian soldiers and they are emphasizing the importance of Prussia for the German history. As far as I could see: They were from the era of Friedrich der Große (The Old Fritz), who was of extraordinary importance for German history. Amongst many other achievements he was the one, who brought the potato to Prussia and Germany. 18:57 That wasn't the NAZI anthem, it was far, far, far older than any Nazi ideology - check out the writer who had written it in 1841. It had become the anthem from early 1920s on after the Kaiser had been fled and the Weimarer Republik had been established. It has nothing to do with the NAZIS, it had been there for over 8 decades and the tune was composed by Haydn as the national anthem of austrian empire, not the german. It had been sung on the battlefield of Langemaark in Belgium late 1914 where the german youth had lost their blood among them my great grandpa who had fought there too. They had sung that song before it became an anthem and you have to understand that these german troops were not really german troups but a mix of the kingdoms inside germany like the prussians and bavarians and these units were thrown together into the battlefield so some met others for the very first time cause it was impossible for them to pay the trip to Bavaria or Württemberg or Hessia from the north or the east. Myths or not the soldiers told this story - at least those who had survived the first battles in open attacks against machine guns there in Langemarck, thousands and thousands of casualaties in days all burried still there. great video

As they say, the first country the nazis conquered was Germany. They also wear different symbols on their clothes when in the concentration camp in the video. One has the star for being Jewish, one is for political dissident, one is for sexual deviance (homosexuality), and I think one is for being an atheist. All things that would get you rounded up by the nazis

Well the line "Deutschland über alles" was not the Nazi anthem..it was written 1841 and was meant in behalf of unification of all those uncountable German states after the decline of the Holy Roman Empire brought about by Napoleon Bonapart and the original meaning was in the sense of "Don´t think in those little German states but put the idea of an unified Germany above all"...and it became the German Anthem in the Weimarer Republic already even way before the Nazis took over with the same notion as like it was intended as it was written in 1841. What the Nazis then did was to paraphrase the original meaning of that line in order to fit into their Nazi ideology of a Master race. Just to be historical correct in behalf of the original meaning of "Deutschland über alles"

Very nice( und mühevolle) interpretation ... But an important optically reason that they choosen a black Germania and why you also see her always with Gold and the red laser : The true colors of the german flag are black red gold ,not yellow ! Think about this and look the video again

They grew up in East Germany, where at one time listening to a radio program could get you arrested. That could have something to do with something.

Here are some scene interpretations (although there are many more): - the roman soldiers at the beginning are the romans that went back to the Teuteburger Forrest, where the famous "Varus-Schlacht" happened and 3 roman legions were annihilated, to retrieve the corpses of the fallen legionnaires. This is somewhat seen as the origin of germany, altough a united german nation has only been created 1871, hence the lyrics "so young and yet so old". - Every scene has the colors black, red, gold in it, as the colors of the german national flag. - the knights could be seen as the various kingdoms that existed where germany is today in the middle ages, which were defeated often, but always "resurrected". - the Hindenburg-Catastrophy - the GDR-part, where the party leaders drink champagne (in contrast of the supposed equality in socialism), normal people couldn't buy such luxury goods. Also the lyrics "separated in spirit, united in heart" targets at this period in time, where germany was ideology wise (and through the inner german border) parted (in west and east germany), but the germans wanted desperately to unify again. - the part with the priests eating sausages and sauerkraut of "germany". The clergy in the middle ages feasted of "germany", while for the normal people only leftovers fall down of the table. But since the people under the desk are wearing Sado Maso-Masks, it can also be seen, that the clergy has their hidden "perversions" as for example the child abuse within the church. - the actress playing germania in the second world war scene has a eye patch over her right eye symbolising the blindness for right wing crimes during second world war (and also sometimes after the war as well). - the Red Army Fraction that's holding "germania" as hostage. -the clerics embracing the nazi soldiars as critique, that the church did nothing against the nazis during WW2. - "germania" giving birth to the dogs: those are leonbergers, a german breed that got nearly extinct after the second world war. It may symbolize, that germany was close to be eradicated after the war, but instead the germany and the germans of today had been "born". That is also emphasized with the doctor wearing clothes resembling the red robe and hat of a judge of the german constitutional court, as the base of the modern germany is the "Grundgesetz", the german constitution. - there is a scene, where left wing extremists throw over a car, a symbolism for violent acts of left wing extremists, but there is a second, where a nazi is shown in light together with them. That may be mentioned, that left wing extremists are in no way better than the nazis in their "terror" and the mindset of those left wing extremists in using acts of violence for their means is only "nazis in other clothes" or that in the end, they use crime, brutality and murder, the same way the nazis did. It's the so called "Hufeisentheorie", horse shoe theory. - the band members (and the actress of germania!) holding the leonberger puppies behind the red robe doctor: everyone of them is a german, standing behind the german constitution. - "germania" drifting in space: the unknown future of germany. These are some details and my interpretation of it. But as I said, there are tons of details and different possible interpretations.

If I am not mistaken (correct me if I am wrong) ... but the black lady in the video was to represent Germany. She is almost in every shot and therefore whatever is happening within these shots you can further tie in with all that imagery

"Deutschland über alles (Germany above everything)" is not a Nazi text. The text was written in the 19th century when Germany did not exist. Instead, there are many German states and it is the call to overcome selfishness and found a common state. That fails because of the competition from Prussia and Austria and it only develops Kleindeutschland (little Germany, which is now the most populous and economically strongest state in Western Europe). During the colonial period, the meaning changes and the majority of residents in the colonies understand the text differently. For them it means oppression. With the Nazis, the rest of the world understands it in the same way. After the Second World War, in West-Germany the first two of the three verses are banned and only the last one is sung. It emphasizes the idea of unification: "Unity and Justice and freedom". The national anthem of East Germany has the same Meter and could also be sung to it. At the reunion there was also the suggestion to mix both. Alternatively, they could have used a completely different text. None of that happened.

I think the line "Meine Liebe kann ich dir nicht geben." has to be seen in this particular context (scene). Till, the lead singer, is NOT emphasizing it for ALL Germans of all times. Till doesn't hate Germany or emphasizes this in other songs and he talks (sings) often in third person. And Rammstein doesn't speak for others either and Till makes thoughtful lyrics, those to think about too (or funny stuff). Yes this video shows more of the violent stuff what was going on and Germany was born out of violence. I guess, Rammstein wanted to remind people of this violence because there are (again) awful right-wing ideas around, supported by a lot of Germans! Showing only one side of the medal pisses some people of and that was Rammstein "always" wants. I'm not offended as a German. It's great music with a stunning masterpiece of video at the end of all discussions. Isn't it?

I love music, but i rarely resonate and relate to the lyrics or visuals but here, they really swooped me off of my feet. Its so provocative and daring, exactly how art should be. I dont know if its possible to encapsulate most germans feelings for their nation better than this song does.

Rammstein hat als ursprünglich ostdeutsche Band vielleicht noch mal einen anderen (kritischeren) Blick auf die deutsche Geschichte. Die Texte sind oft unvergleichlich virtuos. Wenn man dreimal hinhört, hat vielleicht drei Interpretationen im Kopf. Einige Intentionen erschließen sich vielleicht gar nicht, ohne Hintergrundwissen. Das ist KUNST.

I'm a bit late to the party (as usual). Great reaction and analysis, enjoyed it thoroughly. As an American der Deutsch spricht ich war gespannt auf die Reaktion der Deutschen auf dieses Lied. I agree with you that this song emphasizes the dark and violent portions of Germany's history, and I also agree that there's a lot to love about German culture, but something I think you left out or perhaps didn't consider is that the central idea Rammstein communicates with the lyrics and the accompanying imagery is about their struggle feeling love towards Germany and pride in being German, irrespective of those positive aspects. Living in America, I'm sure you see how much national pride there is here. American flags are *everywhere*, July 4 is just about our biggest holiday perhaps behind the Yule season, and there's this ingrained notion in the US about the achievement of individual liberty, etc. Not being German myself I can't speak directly to how the German mindset is different, but I think this song (and some of their other works) give insight into just how differently the band feels about their own country - namely, deeply conflicted. Mein Herz in Flammen, will dich lieben und verdammen...Man kann dich lieben und will dich hassen...deine Liebe ist Fluch und Segen...meine Liebe kann ich dir nicht geben When I hear these lyrics, it brings to mind And One's Steine sind Steine, specifically how these lyrics contrast so strongly with, "Deutsche sei Stolz". Hearing both of these songs from German bands gives me an impression that Rammstein aren't the only ones tackling these feelings of being deeply conflicted. So while I agree that yes, there are many things to love about German culture - I'm originally from a region of Texas predominately settled by Germans and still steeped in that culture - I think it's also important to face issues like those presented here directly, and try to come to terms with them independently and separately from other aspects. My attitude there comes from my own experience in my own struggles about pride in being American - I don't think that one can balance the good vs the bad on a set of scales, using the good to somehow justify or outweigh the bad...I think they must be dealt with independently. Mich interessiert Ihre Sicht. On another (shorter) note, regarding Ruby Commey's role as Germania, I've heard a number of opinions on this, and I don't think that we'll really know unless and until the band tells us their thinking. That said, my interpretation of this choice - or at least, what I got out of it - is that Germany, as an idea, is different or more than what we think it is. Or perhaps, maybe it's a statement that throughout history, there were all these attempts to control or maybe live up to some ideal, and that in these examples they missed the mark, because what they assumed Germany (as an idea or spirit) was, was ultimately incorrect. I'm trying to find the right words to say what I mean more succinctly but my words are failing me...Ich hoffe Sie verstehen was ich meine. Sie können sich sehr gut ausdrücken. portuguese here just chiming in have alot of friends in germany and had family fight her in both wars the german people have every right to be proud but i think alot comes from being afraid of what they are capable of at their worst and it holds them back from truly loving there homeland entirely. all nations have done horrible things and its hard to accept these things and look at any nation without seeing the blood on its hands but germans should be proud of who and what they are without them the world would be a lesser place and that goes for every nation

Thank you, as another with mixed German heritage, it's wonderful to see a perspective that respects our heritage but is honest about it. I feel pride in my German heritage, but I have been shamed my entire life for it. I don't believe our history should be ignored, but we have moved forward but never forgotten our past.

The name Rammstein actually comes from Rammstein-Flugschau (Rammstein Airshow), and the extra, "m", was apparantly inserted by accident.

The gist of it is he wants to love Germany, but the history makes it hard. They were formed in East Germany long before the wall came down and have never changed their lineup.

Rammstein always goes epic in introducing their metal music/video and specially their live performance ! Definitely psycho artists delivering beautiful art ! Btw the lovely piano solo at the ending is the theme of their song "sonne" , and for my recommendation to you is "Mein herz brennt,piano version by Sven helbig official video" Sad and Emotional literally means my heart burns 💔

There is one song/performance you really should give it a watch. Even without it being a reaction: Rammstein - Mein Herz Brennt (Piano version) It is something not seen anywhere else and Till is simply phenomenal. He personifies a slightly dark version of our "Sandmännchen". It is profound.

One thing to remember about Rammstein is that they grew up in East Germany, under the German Communist regime, so they were still living under oppression long after democracy arrived in the west.

Rammstein are extremely talented band love them to bits. Check out their new album. Zeit is a masterpiece songs beautiful. Also Zick Zack is funny.

Ich bin aus Pforzheim. 🙈 Ich finde gar nicht, dass du beim Deutsch sprechen einen amerikanischen Akzent hast. Zu Rammstein: Ihre Musikvideos sind immer sensationell!!!! Unfassbar hohe Qualität und oft mit vielen versteckten Details. Vom aktuellen Album würde ich für weitere Reactions auf jeden Fall noch "Zeit", "Angst", "Zick-Zack", "Dicke Titten" und "Adieu" empfehlen. Vor allem "Zeit" und "Angst" regen einen sehr zum Nachdenken an, finde ich... ok so as always great reaction this band I know I kind of fell into the rabbit hole to see what they were all about so I have heard alot of their music not what I would normally listen to but not completely bad alot of thier music seems to dark in nature but there are a few that arent so dark anyways great job as usual for you lol I was listening to the area you are from in Germany and hello neighbor I was born in Weisbaden and raised in Kaiserslauten and the Worms area then went to school in Nuremburg as I got older so same areas for us lol as always your ride or die forever EyyyyOooo
