I love how, right up front, he's clear that he's not taking credit for writing the song... just singing it. :)

Bigger deal even when you think about this Lionel Ritchie hadn't gone solo yet his first solo album was 2 years after Kenny released this song and publicly gave him the credit show after show:)
@vincentvalenti4600
3 жыл бұрын
@@KickassMarketingCreative Ritchie credits Rogers for helping to launch his solo career and was always grateful how he repeatedly gave him credit for being behind the song. And Rogers was always mutually grateful for Ritchie writing one of his first crossover hits and one of his most successful songs, ever. They remained very close friends up until Rogers's death this year.

@@demonicinfusion To be clear, when he wrote the song, they were not yet friends. Rogers liked Richie's writing abilities with the Commodores, and called him to see if he'd be interested in writing a song for him. The collaboration is what formed the 40-year friendship.
Kenny Rogers recorded this song but actually Lionel Richie wrote the song for Kenny Rogers. Kenny Rogers was a Legend. Rest in peace Kenny Rogers.

Kenny and Lionel. Great
You couldn't go anywhere for a while without hearing Kenny's THE GAMBLER -- a legendary song. And LUCILLE is another one too by him, and you will LOVE it, Tim -- they're both real 'storyteller' kinda songs. Don't know if you've heard the term "crossover artist," but they're someone who is thought to be one style of music but they make it big in another. So, Kenny was one of the big early "crossover" country artists who had massive hits on the pop charts. He was so legendary. The Gambler was such a massive hit that they made a MOVIE of the song, like a whole TV movie based on the story in the song. It's awesome. Kenny and Dolly Parton were best of friends too, and when he died, Dolly must've taken it hard. He only died this past March, 2020. This song was released in 1980, so he was 40 when he did this song, which is hilarious, because I always thought he was much older, but he pretty much looked like this 'distinguished gentleman' for 25 years, then "aged" in his 70s.

As a kid growing up in the 1980s, Kenny Rogers was so ubiquitous that I think I kind of took him for granted. I've only come to realize as an adult what an absolute legend he was. Glad to see you guys react to this song; I feel like I'm hearing it through fresh ears, right along with you.

You are so right he was taken for granted. I was in my early 20's when he released this and he was all over the radio during that time. It is a shame that so many talented true singers were taken for granted and often dismissed as over exposed. What I love about youtube and these reaction videos is youth gets to sample what we oldsters knew back then - real voices - no autotune - pure talent. I was lucky enough to see Kenny in concert one time and his voice is pure and just as good live as in recordings. He was an amazing entertainer on stage. May I dare say that God gave us but a short time to soak in his heavenly music. I pray he's joined our Lord and adds to the music there. Kudos to your review. Your facial expressions tell the story about your hearts as well.

That brought tears to my eyes. Singing from his soul. RIP Kenny Rogers
My dad sang this song at my aunt’s wedding when I was in the second grade, I think. He practiced most of the three hour car ride to my grandma’s house. The winter night sky in that lonely open space between Utah and Idaho was perfectly clear, and lit up like the fourth with stars. We had this old Toyota hatchback, and seatbelts weren’t really a thing back then. Since it was late, my folks just made a bed in the back, and all my siblings were asleep a half hour into the trip. I laid in the back and looked up at the stars and listened to my dad’s beautiful voice as he sang this song the whole way there. When we got there, I pretended to be asleep so my dad would carry me in. It was one of the most peaceful and safe feelings I’ve ever had in my life. I so wish I had a video of him singing that song.
As a teen I remember loving this song when it came out in 1980. At the time we all thought Kenny was an old man. He was only 42 when he sang this.
Check out his song "She Believes in Me". It's my favorite Kenny Rogers song.

I hear you loud and clear, my friend! I have been single for sixteen years. I have tried all different types of dating sites. True gentlemen do not exist! They state that they want a good woman who is loving, a one man woman, loyal, caring, family oriented, likes to have fun, likes to be adventurous, walks on the beach, camping etc, etc, etc; and they want a long term committed relationship. Bologna!!!!! All lies! After a few texts and nice conversation, three days later, here come the (you know what) questions. Or, they tell you that you are too good for them. When they truly see that you are serious about a grown up relationship, they are out of there! And, they don’t want to take you out. They want you to cook for them. They don’t want to go out, they like being home “with you”; Ha! being home period, being waited on, watching sports, playing video games. Sorry, I raised five kids already, I don’t need one more.
