Presence is a straight ahead hard rock album and very stripped back for a Led Zep record, except for the many LAYERS of guitars. Nothing too fancy, little if any keyboards. I'm surprised it doesn't rate higher w/ Zep fans.

In my opinion it's the weak second side that lets it down. I've never been a fan of Nobody's Fault But Mine, and Candy Store Rock and Hots On From Nowhere are annoying and weak. Tea For One almost saves it. A stunning slow blues with great singing and guitar work.

Welcome to the Led Zeppelin album that was not supposed to exist! Prior to embarking on a 1976 tour, Robert Plant severely broke his ankle resulting in him being in a wheelchair for most of the year. They decided to record an album instead, but they had no new material. Most of the songs were written in the studio based on jams they had during the sessions. There is very little variation in the instruments - electric guitar, bass, drums and vocals all the way through, not a keyboard or acoustic guitar to be found. Factiod: Achilles Last Stand was called The Wheelchair Song during rehearsals. The title was a play on the legend of Achilles, the strong man whose only weak spot was the heel of his foot. The final title was an "in joke" about Robert's broken ankle.

Guitar overdub heaven! I never quite figured out how many overdubs Jimmy added in Achilles Last Stand, but it's a lot. And he's not just doing it because he can, but to create an undulating musical canvas. A sonic landscape designed for earphone listening. One wonders why no one else has ever tried that same formula. Much of the secret to Zeppelins magic dust is the astonishing production and mixing skills of Jimmy Page, and not just the playing of the individuals. Ten Years Gone is another example of this incomprehensible “guitar army” approach to song construction. And the galloping horses rhythm of Achilles would never work if it was a shorter song, a shorter composition. You are riding into battle relentlessly and gets absorbed into the journey, invested in the story. It is too long and too complicated to be a hit, but many, like me, think it is one of the finest arrangements and compositions Jimmy ever created. It is panoramic cinema scope sensory overload. Put your headphones on and crank the volume up! Cheers to miss Verdy 🍺

FYI: Achilles is said A-Kill-ease (from the Greek mythology) ... I remember when this album first came out, they just changed the legal drinking age in BC to 19 and that year I could legally go to the bar with my older friends. When I first heard Achilles Last Stand I loved it, but it wasn't until I tried to learn to play it did I realize just how complicated the guitar playing was, I just couldn't get the right cadence (the matching speed and sound) just right. Even now It's still a challenge, but I love the song even more.

Great, genuine reaction as always! I always loved the clever play on words with "Achilles Last Stand" - referencing Achilles' Heel, the only part of his body that was not immune to injury because (in later versions of the myth, anyway) it was where his mother held him when she dipped him in the river Styx to confer invulnerability. And alluding to (Achilles look-alike?) Robert Plant's recent very serious ankle injury In a car accident. In my top three Led Zep songs of all time, although the rest of the album does not excite me quite as much. "Where the mighty arms of Atlas hold the heavens from the earth..." - all the lyrics in the song have specific meaning and often with plays on words. And guitar, drums and bass all absolutely outstanding.

Jimmy stayed up at least one night putting the finishing overdubbed guitars on. "Achilles Last Stand" is, I think, Jimmy's favorite Zeppelin song. Easy to see (hear) why! FYIJIC. Achilles was the mightiest of Greek warriors during the Trojan War, invulnerable save for a single spot on his ankle where the gods held his body as they dipped him in invincibility sauce. Brad Pitt played him in the movie Troy. Today we informally call the tendons on the back of the lower leg where the foot joins "Achilles tendons". I suspect that as a footballer you've gotten kicked there many times.

I'm not going to define my comment with specifics , suffice to say , if you know you know . How do you get away with it ? Not that I'm complaining . I love it ! I always enjoy your musical reactions , there is nothing fake . You say what you feel and it is so real .

Not my favorite but Achilles is one of their greatest creations. I would say that "Presence" and "In through the out door" both fell short of expectations, though awesome in their own right.

a-KEEL-ees. Have you ever heard of Achilles Heel? Basically, that means, your weak spot. If I recall correctly, when Achilles was born, his mother knew of some magical body of water whereby, if you put your hand in it, your hand would forever be completely invincible. Well, she wanted to dip his entire body into the water so, she held him by his heel and dipped him in so, the only place he could be harmed for the rest of his life was that heel. because it's the only part of his body that never touched that water. One day, when he was an adult, he was fighting in a battle and someone happened to shoot him in that particular heel with an arrow and it killed him. That's not the bass, that's the low strings on the guitar. I used to know of a local radio station that had that sculpture on the cover. It's called, "The Object". Your mic is still breaking up.

@@JuniorFarquar I wouldn't mind having one, either. I used to have lots of prized collectable possessions `til my evil, greedy ex-sisters had me kicked out of my own house 4 years ago!

No problem, I was struggling to work it out when I first come across her. Fortunately she does little question and answer posts when she reaches a milestone, like 10,000, 20,000 subscribers. The last one was for 50,000. So you learn about where she lives and other things like the braces. She's had it tough, with quite a major cooperation on her jaw. But she seems a lovely girl, her parents should be really proud.

@@ianhampton1208 so what’s the story with her braces? I was thinking , why does a 25 year old have braces? And you said her jaw? Huh
