    Much of the song Trampled Under Foot is John Paul Jones. LZ's secret weapon. What you thought was an accompanied guitar riff, was actually JPJ. He was using a myriad of different keyed instruments, synths, keys, mellotron and bass pedals. The guy could be a one man band to his own, literally played anything with strings or keys. (Jimmy also used layered guitar tracks in the song as well, which you mentioned. Jimmy did some amazing recording work and production in the studio, using multi-track layering with guitars).

    Hi Verdy...😉Trampled Under Foot is pure released energy, a kind of heavy funk with a wah wah effect and devastating drums. Kashmir is one of the most epic songs in rock, that riff accompanied by the strings hits you from the beginning and by the final minutes Plant is heartbreaking... a song that after listening to it cannot be forgotten. Thanks for the reaction.

    For years I thought Trampled Underfoot was Tramp Led Underfoot because of how it was written on the LP liner notes. And even later than that I realized that the song was about a car. I think JPJ’s keyboard work is what makes this song really special. It was written like this: Tramp Led Under Foot And I imagined it was like a hobo being lured to a stampede of people.

    I think it would be interesting for you to listen to a later performance of Kashmir as part of the 'Live from Celebration Day' concert, performed by the three surviving members of the band with John Bonham's son Jason Bonham on the drums. Jason's drumming is every bit as powerful and technically masterful as his father's was, and Robert Plant's singing is something to behold, more mature, and more nuanced and heart-felt. You won't be disappointed.

    I was pretty sure you would love "Kashmir", it's been one of my favorites for decades. One odd note, if you're used to dealing with musical timing, anything other than 4/4 tends to sound odd to western ears. In this one, Bonham is drumming in 4/4 the whole time while Page is switching between 6/8 and 4/4. The result is a more "alien" sound that fits the theme.

    Hey Verdy, you’re right, it’s in one movie I know of from 1982: “Fast Times At Ridgemont High” in the scene after nervous teen character Mark Ratner gets some dating advice from his concert ticket scalping friend Mike Damone to “play Side 2 of Led Zeppelin IV for her” inferring something like “Chicks love that one, guaranteed, never misses”. And then,in the next scene, he’s driving her around in his little car playing “Kashmir” which is this Side 2 of Physical Graffiti. It’s a joke about Mark Ratner being too nervous and nerdy to be schooled in Zeppelin to get it right, but for many of us diehard stoner Zeppelin fans, this mix up on album selection landed him on a much better choice track, and also kinda shows what a cheeseball the character Mark Demone was for telling him to set the mood with “Stairway To Heaven”. 😂😂😂

    The studio version of _"Kashmir"_ is a great song. There are live versions which are utterly phenomenal. WRT _"Kashmir"_ being in a movie, you might also be remembering Puff Daddy's song _"Come with Me"_ which was done for the movie _"Godzilla"_ - which has completely different lyrics but features Jimmy himself on guitar. Depending on which sounds you were referring to, I suspect the violin sound you hear on _"Kashmir"_ is John Paul Jones on keyboards, although there have been cover-versions which have brought in violins. In fact, Lindsey Stirling (solo artist who is a violinist) has done versions of _"Kashmir"_ in some of her concerts. Videos here on YT.

    The mellotron which gives those violin sounds on Kashmir is a rather interesting instrument. First off it's a keyboard. And built inside it are short snippets of different instruments recorded on tape. It was kind of an early version of a sampler. So when you hit a specific key it would play that pre-recorded section. It wasn't a very practical instrument over the long term because each of those little sections of tape would get worn out from being played repeatedly. But it had the coolest sound and you hear it a lot in that era mid to late 70s.

So happy to see you've made it to my favorite Led Zeppelin album (and tied with the Beatles "White Album" for my overall favorite album of all time). So I'm gonna recommend you start your Beatles journey. Led Zeppelin are the 5th biggest selling music artist of all time, the Beatles are #1. If you take this magical journey, I promise you won't be disappointed. Like you did with Zeppelin, I would start with the 1st Beatles album (Please Please Me) and go right in chronological order until their final (recorded) album, Abbey Road. Sorry, I just got back from watching the Super Bowl and I just seen this. To answer your question, it gets kinda complicated, because many of the Beatles record sales happened before any entity that certified record sales ever existed. To determine these numbers, it required University research. Based on numbers compiled by Penn State Laureate Kenneth Womack in 2014, the Beatles had sold in excess of 2.3 Billion albums (KZread wont let me input the exact website address, so do a google search using the words "kenneth womack penn state beatles 2.3 billion" and the first Penn State University website titled "50 Years of Beatles: The Fab Four's historic high-five" will pop up). That research was done 10 years ago, and I've seen revised university research compiled a few years ago that had the Beatles at approximately 2.4 Billion, Elvis at #2 with approximately 750 million, Garth Brooks at #3 with ~ 500 Million, Michael Jackson at #4 with approximately 400 million, and Led Zeppelin at #5 with sales between 350 and 400 million. Again, a lot of those numbers are based on research after the fact. If you are talking strictly certified sales, do a google search of the top 50 biggest selling music artists as published by Business Insider. Their top 10 list (based on certified sales as of June 28, 2023) is as follows: 10) Pink Floyd at ~75 Million Units, 9) AC/DC at ~75 Million Units, 8) Elton John at ~79 Million Units, 7) Billy Joel at ~86 Million Units, 6) Michael Jackson at ~89 Million Units, 5) Led Zeppelin at ~112.5 Million Units, 4) Eagles at ~120 Million Units, 3) Elvis Presley at ~146.5 Million Units, 2) Garth Brooks at ~157 Million Units, and finally, 1)The Beatles at ~183 Million Units. No matter what list I pull up, even though the numbers may differ sometimes, Led Zeppelin are normally in the 5th place position (sometimes 4th), and The Beatles are always in 1st place (and nobody else even comes close). That's why I felt comfortable stating their all time sales positions without giving exact numbers. I hope that helps! Peace @@gregbyrne743

Also, Kashmir is their greatest song, it's the original of course, glad you reacted to it. And also, it's not a violin or a guitar, it's a synthesizer called a Melotron that is used to recreate sounds like violins.

    Thank you for great reactions on this magnificent album, done the way it should be. For those old enough, the album was bought when the only format was vinyl, using a turntable letting each side naturally play out. No fast forward or dodging tracks, there was context to each side, and the running order of tracks, which is what the artist had formed deliberately. My favorite Zeppelin album.

    Kashmir really is more complicated than you think but they make it sound simple. The chords are very unusual, the different sections are very different from each other and kind of transport you to different places and the main riff has the guitars and keys in 3/4 while the percussion is in 4/4, adding to the exotic feel, and only coming together when they've completed a cycle. Very cool song. I believe the members of led zeppelin considered this to be what they must wanted to be known for, not Stairway to Heaven

    John Paul Jones is playing a clavinet on Trampled Underfoot, inspired by Stevie Wonder's song Superstition. And Kashmir, other than Stairway, is easily Zeppelins most well known song. Ask Plant what's his favorite LZ song, it's Kashmir.

    From Led Zeppelin: Live on TV BYEN/Danmarks Radio [Full Performance] This is before their first album release, and before everyone knew their name (the Bands name that is), Page would be the only one that would have been know, maybe. This video is in Black and White the sound is pretty good, the songs they play are still in development But to see them this young, and unknown, makes them BURN. People are sitting cross legged in front of them less that 10 feet from Robert Plant, and if there had been a stage they would have burned it to the ground. If you love Led Zeppelin and have not seen this prepare to be amazed. kzread.info/dash/bejne/nWGLtcSGh5qogMY.html

    The string sounds you're hearing on Kashmir is not Page with a bow, but John Paul Jones playing the mellotron. The mellotron is a keyboard instrument that uses tape loops with pre-recorded sounds (in this case, a string section and a horn section) that are activated, and pitch controlled by playing the keyboard. It is a 'klunky' instrument - it cannot be played quickly as each depression of the keyboard activates a tape that only ends when you lift your hand off the depressed key. Its advantage is that it can be programed with an endless variety of sounds; Zeppelin used flute sounds on live versions of Stairway to Heaven. The keyboard sound on the intro to The Beatles Strawberry Fields Forever and the string sounds on Watcher of the Skies by Genesis are also the Mellotron. They are pretty much rendered obsolete since the advent of digital recording; however vintage instruments are still sought out due to their unique 'other worldly' sound.

    Not exactly true. While John Paul Jones uses a mellotron to play Kashmir in live shows, actual string and horn arrangements were used in the studio track, arranged by jpj.

    Trampled Underfoot pays homage to Robert Johnson’s Terraplane Blues from 1936. It’s where that main groove comes from.

  • @tektoniks_architects

    @tektoniks_architects

    No, the main groove doesn't come from there. Terraplane Blues describes sex using metaphors of car parts - this is the inspiration for the lyrics of Trampled Underfoot, which also describes a woman and sex in metaphorical terms like a car's parts. The "groove" or sound of Trampled Underfoot is not taken from Terraplane Blues.

  • @ClaytonMacleod

    @ClaytonMacleod

    @@tektoniks_architects It most certainly is. Not only am I a guitar player that’s learned both parts, Robert Plant explains exactly which part of Johnson’s riff was stolen for their own riff. A part that many, many people have used over the years. It is indeed where the main groove comes from.

    Blues riffs are all related. Their inherent structure is by definition related.

  • @ClaytonMacleod

    @ClaytonMacleod

    @@tektoniks_architects It’s not about blues being related to blues. It is literally copy and paste of a portion of one riff. Go listen to Terraplane Blues again. If it isn’t obvious to you then you have a terrible ear. Go watch celebration Day again to see Robert Plant’s intro to Trampled Under Foot. He talks at length about it. You not thinking so doesn’t change things. It is a portion of Robert Johnson’s riff repeated to make the main groove of their song.
