Everyone clamors about Robert Plant's singing - for damn good reason - but everyone overlooks or forgets to mention his outstanding harmonica work. He was/is an excellent harmonica player!

Yeah bang on but that is where the confusion comes in as it is a harmonica sounding a little like an electric guitar rather than the other way round by using guitar style peddle effects on it to make it sound more down and dirty

Like most of my late 70s music listening memories, they all run together. I’d meet with the guys at Craig’s house, do a bong hit, and either settle in to listen or play ping pong. There was an enclosed patio attached to the garage. Craig was the youngest of three brothers and I think the oldest had worn out the parents. They left us alone pretty much, or checked in on us early and then left us alone. So I have a general memory. I know I first heard this album at Craig’s house, but I don’t have a discrete memory of it. I’m pretty sure I have some great memories from this period, if I could only remember them.

As a huge Zeppelin fan that grew up in the 70's this is arguably their best album. Let the hate begin! Seriously, this album is up there as one of their best IMHO. Of course Led Zeppelin I, II, II, IV and Houses of the Holy are right up there. They were just so good and were constantly creative and experimenting and changing. Truly remarkable.

Hi Verdy , the thing i like about your reactions is you doing entire albums one side at a time. When these albums came out you knew about a couple of months in advance. You'd start saving up some money anticipating for that day. When that day arrived you go to the local record store and buy as many new albums that were coming out that day that you could afford. Then you get home unwrap all the albums , put one on your turntable and sit back and read the lyrics from the record sleeve. It wasn't just listening , it was the expierience of the smell of new vinyl , reading the liner notes & lyrics and hearing that music for the first time. Magic.

At the end of "In My Time Of Dying" you hear drummer John say "THAT'S GOING TO BE THE ONE, ISN'T IT?" because they are trying to record his drums together, he's asking if they got it right, if it's worthy of being on the album. Recording generally starts with the drums first, the other guys play along with you as a guide but only the drums are getting fully mic'ed up; the other instruments and the vocals are added at a later time. John's asking if that's the one because he suspected they had something great on that take, and indeed they did

Physical Graffity is a masterpiece and it is curious that it is a collage of songs recorded for the album and others that were left over from previous albums, hence the variety of styles that can be found. Custard Pie was taken from a song by blues man Sleepy John Estes called Drop Down Mama, written in 1935. In My Time of Dying came from a song by gospel blues artist Josh White called Jesus Gonna Make Up My Dying Bed, written in 1933. Zeppelin did a great job turning them into power blues rock songs.

The day this was released, I was at the record store waiting for the place to open. Bought my copy, went back to my dorm at college, put it on my stereo with my headphone on (I had quite a system at the time as I also worked in a hi-fi store and got to buy stuff direct from the manufacturer on consignment at around half the retail price). Anyway, I listened to the album straight through. It was different from their other albums, which was nothing new for the LZ fan universe. But certainly, there wasn't a bad song in the lot. It could sound experimental, gritty, and even live at times. Remarkable album. And though I like their later stuff, they never again did anything to rival this one as a collection, only some single tracks here and there that pushed the envelope of their potential. I believe this was the first album released under their own private label, Swansong. Kind of ironic in a way since in many ways this album signalled their creative zenith as a group. Everything after this was anti-climatic.

That WAS a harmonica, played thru an amplifier with the same sort of distortion as an electric guitar thru an amplifier. It's an old trick first used in the 1950's by blues musicians like Little Walter and Muddy Waters. Jimmy Page is not bending the strings in the intro of In My Time of Dying. He is playing the song with a slide on his pinky finger. A slide is a smooth cylinder placed over the finger which allows him to "slide" up and down the frets making that sound. Factoid: In My Time of Dying is the band playing live in the studio. No overdubs.

Finally a great album again ;-) BTW It is Robert playing the harmonica, not a guitar (no shame!). If you get around to their live album The Song Remains The Same, that's something else. Also please react to their swan song concert "Celebration Day" (available on KZread). Give Robert Plant two songs to warm up and they play their hearts out right out of the screen

That actually was a harmonica on Custard pie. Robert is doing an overdub (he was a great harmonica player)

That's REAL harmonica! for the album Robert Plant himself played it on separate track alongside his own vocal track, but for the concert they hired session musicians

I recommend you to watch the live Moby Dick performance. It's something that you've never seen before or thought was possible. This will give you a perspective on why John Bonham is the greatest drummer of all time.
