    What amazes me is how differently modern war is fought compared to WW2. But I guess in turn, WW2 was fought very differently to WW1. The modern way appears to be directed towards minimizing casualties, but I think perhaps the knock on effect is that we get these long protracted conflicts. I'd be very interested to know what a marine who served in WW2 or Vietnam thought about these videos.

  • @MrGeorocks

    @MrGeorocks

    7 жыл бұрын

    In some fairness to the tactics in WW1 after they settled in to their trenches most sides had already lost a lot of their trained fighting force, Britain especially. I saw a documentary (can't remember which) that did explain some of the mass charge tactics as necessary because with the initial losses they needed troops quickly to replace losses and couldn't afford the time to properly train them. Even when it was obvious that simply running across no mans land wasn't the most effective way of attacking they couldn't spare the time needed to train their soldiers and it only got worse when they had to start conscripting.They needed their men to hit home at the same time and tried walking attacks protected by smokescreens. Later stages of the war saw trench raids by smaller, more mobile and by then experienced soldiers which was much more effective. It wasn't being held up as an excuse for the huge loss of life from suicidal attacks but it makes sense when put that way.

  • @FalseNomen

    @FalseNomen

    7 жыл бұрын

    That sounds exactly like an excuse for those suicidal attacks. There's no justifying those tactics when almost every massive offensive ended with huge casualties, while and gains were minimal and temporary. The correct approach would simply have been to avoid those attacks at all. So many generals couldn't stomach that idea-it felt better, more honorable perhaps, to order a suicidal attack than not to attack at all. What a waste. The major issue was that long range weapons and the ability to reinforce interior lines with railways had given an overwhelming advantage to the defender. Commanders had limited control of their armies because radios were large and rare and forward telegraph lines were often cut. The dynamism offered by tanks and airplanes appeared late in the war, and even then in a limited capacity.

    One of the items i have read at the the end of WW2, when American troops entered villages and towns in Germany, they would receive sniper fire from a house on a block. The way they dealt with that was they put enough lead into the block until there were no houses left, thus ending the sniper. As the continued, German civilians would point out snipers as to keep their casualties down and keep their houses intake, minimizing casualties.

    I dunno, it's a myth that soldiers coming back from a warzone are fit. I've seen Marines come home and they are either lean with some muscle or they are a little bigger despite not having the luxury to eat when they want on the field. It's estimated that those who come back usually don't even change in appearance.

  • @rickybobby9649

    @@Clone_of_Darth_Revan Don't have to exactly be rambo fit to be a marine. All marines have their MOS, this 249 operator definitely spends time at the gym, where as pencil pushers or less physically demanding jobs don't need to be ripped. In WW2 the average build was just fit, not particularly muscular or anything. If you could back then carry your Garand while getting shot at by krauts, you were just fine so there wasn't a need to be jacked like nowadays where the average combat load is 50+ pounds

    Military spending is relative. It's incomparable to other markets. The value traded in bullets between the two forces are both high. Gone are the days of fashioning a wood stick into a spear. The attacker lets fly his 5.56 while the defenders return back with ample 5x39. War is expensive. It was a 10 minute insight into combat. These battles tend to last days, weeks, or months.

    armagedon622 Well our RC drones today are pretty small,but I dont know if the enemy would shoot them or be able to shoot them,since I bet they wouldnt be cheap.And you would also carry a controller too,so a periscope device would probably work a bit better for field ops I reckon,but if your say,Recon squads could definitly use RC drones like that however.

  • @armagedon622

    @armagedon622

    8 жыл бұрын

    well i bet those RC drones are so expensive cause they are made for the military and shit but a small box in the backpack with a RC quad drone or something even smaller with a camera should cost about 2000$ or less but again even if they would get shot down atleast you would see if the enemy is flanking you or not and where the enemy is shooting you from.

  • @ComradeDragon1957

    @ComradeDragon1957

    8 жыл бұрын

    armagedon622 Yeah those would be great for that,but I would personally want to have a periscope just because of the low tech and low costs and all that.Can basicly do half the work of the drone for you,and not worry about it getting shot at since its pretty small,but this is just my view on it,dont take any of it with a grain of salt.

    War is hell. I have had 4 family members who are very religious Christians. They said when they were getting shot at, in a firefight, or realized they were walking into an ambush, every other word they said was a curse word. Cursing won't make you go to hell. Not when they're in hell on earth.

Jumping out of cover and searching for a dead bad guy for ammo is not always practical since they will shoot at you when you step out of cover to look for a dead bad guy and hope they have ammo. You'd probably have to use bad guy weapon too since they will probably have different ammo. Just not worth the hassle if you still got some stuff left.
