Yes, except for the fact that there was not a single drip of water sprayed from the tower onto the fire till 5:42. The fire fighters in the bucket just seem to enjow the show. In Europe, that's unthinkable. Under any circumstance. Period.

I am a firefighter - retired - New York State certified interior structural firefighter and trainer - before retiring I was Captain of a tower ladder like that one - I wasn't there and don't know the whole picture - but it does seem they were rather slow in establishing their water supply. The tower (really a quint) (you can tell its a Pierce from the bucket) had to have been there for at least a minute or two before the video started since they were already jacked and the tower starting up. It was clearly an exterior attack on the way in, so they should have established water supply first. Tower's no good without water. So why didn't they drop one man and their 5" at the nearest hydrant on their path in - with the Pierce you can wrap the hydrant and it will pull out the back. Driver pulls up, puts both the pump and aerial in gear, sets the chocks, then gets the 5" onto the inlet and tells the hydrant guy to open it up. Gets the water supply established. One of the tower guys sets the jacks and gets the tower ready. My guess is they could have had wet stuff on the red stuff about three or four minutes faster - and you could see how quickly that fire spread. Done it enough times myself to know.

I am a firefighter in the Midwest. I realize everything thing you said makes sense but, we typically (other Midwest cities included) do not have the staffing level on a truck company like The FDNY has. Those firefighters taking the hydrant might be the engine crews. Helping a two person truck company.

@@TT-nx1wh that's understandable I'm on a 2 man engine. I was trying to figure out why engines didnt forward lay in. It looks like 2 were just sitting idle. Looks are decieving especially on KZread because we only see a tenth of what is going on. Regardless of anything that was quite a fire.

VERY frustrating to watch!! Per 1: "the firefighters are here" Per 2: "what are they doing?" Per 1: "watching it burn it looks like!"

They had to pass a hydrant coming in. Stop and make a forward lay. No reason to drag LDH a block down the street in a large city. It took far too long to get water on this fire.

Exactly what I was thinking too. By the time they find a hydrant, the fire will have burnt itself out! For a city area I'm surprised there aren't more hydrants per block.

Actually if you watch again, there's no-one on the ladder. Nozzle and ladder operated by remote control. The nozzle was probably in it's travel position and just so happen to be pointing toward the ambulance.

@@railwayman100 Perhaps. I think the main issue is, that ladder truck was moving into position about the 1:00, 3 other fire vehicles were already on scene at the start of the video. Yet some how it took almost 7 minutes for the first aerial to get water established, and another minute to get the second one. If they had water established around the 2 minute mark, nobody would have cared that the ambulance got washed first.

Almost every fire truck in the Netherlands has 1000 gallons of water on board, so the can start putting out the fire the moment they arrive. no time wasted.

Regardless of the "what if's", all could have been prevented by proper use of external heating devices, use of a dedicated "fire watch" person with appropriate dry chemical extinguisher, etc blah blah blah. No i'm not a "fire fighter" per se but over two decades of OS&H on major construciton sites to include Gov't Aerospace, Fossil fuel Power generation, Nuclear Construction and Power Generation as well as on the Med/Fire response teams kind of gives me a "had proper precautions" been taken none of this would have been a talking point. Many thanks to all Emergency Services folks out there. You do make a difference, especially VFD's

@Bill Williams , conventional wisdom would think that but one must remember "how" insurance companies MAKE money. They make their additional fees by processing claims so it's a fine line between what should be and what is.

WOW!! Almost 6 minutes into the video before water was applied, and they have 3 pump trucks behind the tower ladder truck. But instead run to a hydrant a block away. I'm glad no one was inside burning to death.

Guy#1: Are you a professional fire fighter? Guy#2: No. But I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

It might just be me but firefighting seems like the most inefficient emergency service. Their response time to a fire is great but once they're on-site it takes *forever* to actually get water on flame. I've noticed this in a number of firefighting videos. There has got to be a better way.

Ladder 1 should have laid line from hydrant facing opposite direction connected to engine 1 getting both deck guns up and running, while ladder two should supply engine 2 and 3 while their deck guns would work. Engine 3 should have laid 2 inch to hose gun and suppressed on the farthest part of the building protecting other buildings from embers. Medic 1 should be stationed in the middle on the left part of screen

2 things; if this building was such a firebomb when half built, would it have still been so flammable when complete and occupied? I'm no firefighter, but I wonder if there's a blazing building and people are known to still be inside, would playing a mist of water, rather than a jet, over the front of the building help suppress a fire, rather like a sprinkler system, until all people inside had left?

No doubt it was very windy that day. Fire loves the extra oxygen that high winds bring. Does not help that the building was under construction before the gyprock was slapped on.

Once the firefighters got the water running it didn't take long to begin tamping down the 40-foot tall flames. But, I was amused that the ladder truck on the right, when they got water to the ladder it began to spray water (at 7:40) off to the right and began drowning an Ambulance. Things like that happen I guess... LOL I'm glad the Crane Operator was able to climb down before he was injured up in his elevated crane workplace perch. And it appears that all the other builders got out as well. The filming of this video was generally an excellent shot. Thanks for sharing...

EO forgot to unpin the stick out of rescue mode and make sure the nozzle was out of default stow position. Oof. It always seems to go that way when folks are filming too.

Wow a lot of fire hope there were no injuries, and thank you to all firefighters everywhere for protecting the citizens of your coverage area. Great video work

In NYC we use a water relay to keep the momentum of pressure. A long stretch like that is water losing a lot of pressure every 10 feet. I realize resources are limited and you have to do what you got to do, but that was some water delay. Having said that, it’s not the brothers fault where the fire is bigger than the city. These guys are dealing with a building boom and understaffed.

If the engines lead with the LDH from the hydrant to the fire bldg.,you could have had 3 deck guns on the fire bldg. in abt 2.5 mins.Streching the LDH a blk down from the tower to a hydrant takes too long.The T L bucket should have 2 moniters-one with a stacked tip,one with a variable tip nozzle.The video was great-no moving of the camara-a very good overall view of the fire scene.Good job.

Zachary Gotterbarn There is no need to hand lay LDH with 2 pumpers behind the aerial. It’s called a reverse lay. And it places a pumper on the water source. In line pumping of LDH is not a good idea. It took entirely too long to apply water!!!

Zachary Gotterbarn You are speaking to a 41 year career firefighter. I retired from one of the largest departments in the south. I served 21 years as a Battalion Chief. Our department is an ISO Class 1. That is not good fire-ground operation. I don’t really care what you think. It’s fact. Check NFPA 1710 and see what the rule of thumb is for successful initial attack. Waiting five minutes to apply water is not saving lives. You apparently are a very sick person. It has nothing to do with my opinion it is what is considered the fire service best practices which by the way are developed by successful departments. You obviously don’t have a clue about how real fire departments work.

Just curious. There were three pumpers without any hose lines deployed parked just to the rear of the first in tower truck . According to Google Earth there was a plug about 100 feet behind those pumpers (at Dubuque Street). Why didn't one of the pumpers catch that plug and lay a supply line into the tower? That would have saved the time consuming task of having to hand jack a supply line from the tower to a plug about a block away.

Was wondering that too, figured it would have been easier to move the truck closer or let the engine crews help, but maybe they were doing other things. Probably just wanted the ladders to do most of the water work.

I'm no expert by any means or even a novice, but that looked like everyone was bumbling around and took 9 years for the water.

Hasn't this fire department ever heard of engine's supporting ariels with a water supply??? This definitely was not Iowa City F. D. finest hour???

This will set Iowa City back another 100 years.

Well well, doesn't matter how good and modern are your tools if nobody's can manage them efficiently.

Just speculating, but maybe the 4:00 hydrant wasn't their first choice, and they couldn't access another one due to snow and ice? The one at the foot of the building is almost buried.

First off, this is ONE ANGLE from a fixed location of a large fire scene. You CANNOT SEE OR KNOW what other things are taking place that the camera does not show!! You were NOT there, you DO NOT have the full picture, you DO NOT hear the radio traffic to get an idea of what else was going on at the time before the towers put water on. Second, if you do a little bit of research, there WAS a lot going on BEFORE the towers flowed water: From another post: " Chris Arch 3 days ago @Rob McMaster within two minutes of receiving the call there were firemen rushing inside the building, applying water, and evacuating construction workers. This was not evident to the roof top cameras nor the Monday morning quarterbacks. There were multiple factors the public were not aware of but the assistant chief has now made known in a Press Citizen interview including the concern for the construction crane and operator, evacuating a daycare that was next door, carrying 5" supply lines nearly 150 yards (hundreds of pounds), weather conditions (It was extremely windy and cold.), and coordinating with the police to keep the public safe and out of the way of the response. I don't know what department you work for, but these men did an incredible job, especially in light of the conditions. Our community is very proud of the efforts of everyone who was involved including ICFD, ICPD, and the Johnson County Ambulance. " For those who can't read, here is the big point right here, again: "within two minutes of receiving the call there were firemen rushing inside the building, *applying water*, and evacuating construction workers." You can't blindly lob in water with a tower or deck gun while firefighters and victims are still inside the structure!! It irritates me that so many non-firefighters (and some who are and should know better) come on these videos on KZread and make stupid comments without any FACTS to back up what they say.

That being said, when the camera angles down and shows one firefighter trying to drag a 5" line over to a hydrant and what appears to be at least three engines with personnel from which at least one other firefighter should be able to assist. There is absolutely no evidence that water was being applied within two minutes. I am not a firefighter, but I do have eyes and it looks to me that the management of personnel was seriously lacking. The conditions may have had a bearing on the situation, but not to the point of taking as long as it did to get water on the fire.

I agree that a LOT of the BS in the comments on this video could have been avoided if the uploader had included that info in the description, or pinned Chris' comment, or maybe linked to the Press Citizen interview. (But then again, the main types of people making those comments are no content, no subscriber trolls who would never read the description or a pinned comment anyway...) If crews or victims are INSIDE a burning structure, you CANNOT blast water from OUTSIDE! You will steam broil whoever is in there, and those tower's water jets can easily tear apart the flimsy unfinished construction. A dead or injured firefighter cannot help put the fire out. And until you become a firefighter or at least train, you may have eyes, but not the background or experience to criticize either the time or management efforts. I have been training for the last several months to get the Volunteer Dept. in my tiny town revived...it has been a steep learning curve and I have a long way to go. My first training has been, you guessed it, fire scene command and evaluation. Now this is something I agree with you on 100%: "That being said, when the camera angles down and shows one firefighter trying to drag a 5" line over to a hydrant and what appears to be at least three engines with personnel from which at least one other firefighter should be able to assist." The lack of foresight for "laying in" as it is called, was a big mistake. it could have, and should have, been done by dropping at the hydrant and driving into position, rather than manually. Lacking the radio traffic, the personnel assisting can go either way. But even if the others all had assignments, I agree at least one could have safely diverted long enough to help out with that 5" line. But I wasn't here, and not in command, so.... I appreciate that you are responding intelligently and with respect.

Coupla observations. You had 3 engines there with tanks full of water. Hit it with the deck gun and keep the fire in check. 1500 gallons minimum can do a lot. Second, you have to attack the fire at its lowest point. Lower that bucket and put the stream in the would be windows and knock that fire before moving up. I get it. It's under construction, and is gonna be torn down, but they could have saved themselves some time with some better tactics.

I have no experience fighting fires. I was in a house that caught fire once and was gutted but that makes me no expert. I'm just an armchair quarterback like everyone else here. I would think in a situation like this that your first couple priorities would be to rescue anyone who's lives are in danger and to contain the fire so it does not spread to other buildings. It seems this was achieved and from that criteria it seems they succeeded. I'm sure another item of big importance is to get the fire put out as quick as possible to minimize damage to the structure but by the time the fire department is called and can arrive a structure is usually already in trouble. I have no doubt the fire fighters and police and first responders did the best they could with what they had. I would thank them for risking their lives to help others rather than ridicule. Certainly like every large event they will go back and look at what went well and what did not. Even the best of entities always work to get better and that's how they do it. For those not familiar with orientation of the fire location, in Iowa City, that is on Burlington Ave, at the College Street intersection. That is at the Hieronymus Square condo development diagonally across the street from the parking ramp to the Old Capital Mall, looking to the southeast. The photographer is on the parking ramp. Lots has changed in IC, but you can see the old Bell (Qwest) Telephone switching building in the background... down the street.

That went so fast, welcome to the joys of new construction

K Duncan it’s a quint, not uncommon for us to lay in with our truck, only downside is that it’s a royal pain to re-pack. Also didn’t help that neither engine, nor truck, appears to have passed at least the hydrant they are using.

The investigation found that the fire started in a third-floor room on the north side of the building. Fire Marshal Brian Greer says the room had a temporary 10′ by 10′ tent structure used as a warming area for combustible subfloor adhesives. The tent housed several cases of the adhesives and a liquid propane-fueled radiant heater. The heater was fueled by a liquid propane tank outside the tent. The heater came in contact with the combustibles in the tent and started a fire. Flames grew and the liquid propane tank started to vent, providing more fuel until it exploded. Strong winds then carried through the structure rapidly. It is estimated that the initial loss is $1,000,000. The investigation is ongoing at this time.

My neighbors house caught on fire. When the fire dept showed up it was smoking from the roof. When they put water on it the house had burned so much it had collapsed. We all still talk about how they showed up with millions in equipment but took 10-15 minutes to simply put the wet stuff on the red stuff.

It is amazing! Smoke and flames showing, two platform trucks, three visible engine comptants, couple of men in yellow bunkers, and they forgot how to hit a hydrant. For those who do not know about hydrants they are painted different colors, you find them about 50 feet apart, and they are used as a supply of water. Sarcasm a service provided for all.

Are you a firefighter? Where you at the scene? Do you know what was going on at the start of this video on the sides you can't see from the ONE viewpoint? Since you are a no original content troll, I doubt you can answer any of that. Keep your worthless commentary to yourself.

In Europe fire trucks always have tanks full of water so when they arrive on site, they can pour water immediately. From what I see in US it works in different way...

In the Navy we always had a fire watch with some poor junior sap with nozzle at the ready when any hot work was being done. Yet these construction outfits don't seem to do it, because I see a lot of these under construction fires that seem to be avoidable. These guys must post a bond because I can't see an insurance company wanting to payout due to a lack of safeguards

Race to the bottom mentality. It's cheaper to buy insurance than to pay someone minimum wage to do a fire watch. The only time I have ever seen a fire watch on a construction project was at refineries.

Hot work on major building sites and construction facilities is permitted in the UK and all staff need a permit following a training induction. The 4 main factors are. No storage of flammables, other than those in direct use in the work area. Ventilation to prevent buildup of solvent fumes. Both flammable and toxic. Extinguishers and Everyone taught how to use them. Hot work ceases 30 minutes (sometimes one hour) before the shift ends and workers leave the area.

It's crazy how I never noticed that. I remember that building being in construction for awhile and am just now finding out that it was on fire two years ago

When this video first started it was manageable, and there were several pumpers on scene doing nothing. If the trucks had used their deck guns to empty their tanks onto it they might have smothered it, or at least, hugely delayed its expansion before it could grow.

Back when I was a hose jockey and later an engineer, we trained constantly. Watching this video, my observations is this department does not.

This is a fantastic video. The guy said just enough to explain what was going on. Pleasant voice, and I appreciate the fact he too noticed it was taking a bit long to get the water going. I did notice the kink in the hose. And I would like to know why the guy standing next to the hose couldn't help out! He instead ran to the side. I don't know a lot about how firefighters work, I am sure they have to wait for the ok before they do anything. Shaking my head.

Was Hodges Const. also involved in the Old Capitol construction fire?

Just imagine that happening when its built and hundreds living in it ....wooden structures are match boxes waiting for an ignition source....

It is now an apartment or condo complex called “the Edge” probably because of its “edgy” design… truly an eyesore. It’s on the corner of Clinton and Burlington

How long do they need to get water on the hose?

How come the 3 engine companies didn’t lay a hose and water relay to the truck company? This will be a training film.

Agreed, That was a major mistake in this one.

We had a similar downtown-building under-construction fire in Raleigh (NC) about this time last year or so. Several videos of it on YT.

If this is how quickly a timber framed building burns whilst under construction it makes you wonder how quickly a completed ( and occupied) building would burn. Must ask why it took almost six minutes from arrival to get some water on it. It was lost then !

In theory, it would have a sprinkler system by the time it was completed and occupied, so a fire like this wouldn't happen. But there are other videos like this - only much, much worse - of similar-sized wooden buildings burning completely while they were under construction.

I've noticed in most of the videos I've watched about fire fighting, there seems to be no sense of urgency in getting water on the fire

Very poor performance here. 6 mins on vid, and certainly more before vid. That's 8-10 mins before they got water to aerial. Why didn't they scope the hydrants on run in and approach and/or drop a man/hose. Those minutes could have made a huge difference for the initial external attack and the amount of the structure they can save.

A large building under construction is a fire hazard. The response was, as usual, underwhelming. They were lucky the place didn't burn to the ground.

Not knowing all the facts and just observing I can’t imagine even the firefighters thought this was timely delivery of water.

Today is a sad day for career departments I don't understand why the engine did not take the hydrant. Second switch the stick from rescue to attack mode. If fire and ems is separate in Iowa, these crews need some time off the job for remediation.

If you can't learn from what you watch, good and bad, and imitate the first while hopefully helping to improve everyone's results for the future from the second, then just thank the video poster and firefighters and move on. I'm coming from airport experience, and while the equipment capabilities are significantly different as is the approach, there are too many of these on YT where the size-up and action plan implementation is agonizing to watch. Imagine risk appraisal and actuarial staff at an insurer watching the opening minutes go by here.

​@@zacharyanonymous5170 There is many ways to do things. I can sit back and pick off the video all day but I wasn't there so I don't know what exactly went down on the fire ground. This video should be used for training and fixing the mistakes that were made. The hydrant should have been taken a lot sooner if the call came in as a working fire. Spraying from rescue mode instead of the attack mode we can both agree that was screwed up. And yes I have been blasted by the Ariel due to $hitty engineers not knowing were to point the nozzle.

There were multiple factors the public were not aware of but the assistant chief has now made known in a Press Citizen interview including the concern for the construction crane and operator, evacuating a daycare that was next door, carrying 5" supply lines nearly 150 yards (hundreds of pounds), weather conditions (It was extremely windy and cold.), and coordinating with the police to keep the public safe and out of the way of the response. I don't know what department you work for, but these men did an incredible job, especially in light of the conditions. Our community is very proud of the efforts of everyone who was involved including ICFD, ICPD, and the Johnson County Ambulance. "

Nice video! But I give up what was the THREE ENGNES COMPANY'S DOING ? No hose on the ground or water flowing most engines carry 4 to 5 hundred gallons of water. Small city didn't anyone know a head where plugs where ? But they knock it down fast . Good job ! Doug in Dallas TX.

They had an interior crew working well before the start of the video doing search and rescue and laying water. (Those crews entered from the far side of the building, not visible in this video.) You CANNOT throw water from outside with an interior crew working, you will seriously injure or kill them and any victims. Once the all-clear was given, the towers fired up. Yes there were some mistakes in this operation clearly visible in this video, but please do some research before jumping to conclusions.

Wow! Did you climb up the parking garage after the fire started, or were you already up there? It’s a great view. I only saw it from Voxman, so I never got to see this angle, only the flames out of the top. Yeebers

Watch the 2nd ladder truck. Too many times, fire crews forget to switch the nozzle position prior to extending the ladder. I've done it myself, and its embarrassing when you have to shut it down, retract the ladder, change the position of the nozzle, & start over.

Where I live in Toronto, Canada, too many people say there are almost no big fires anymore because of "better building materials" and strong Fire Prevention inspections. Does this building look like it was constructed of "better building materials"? NOT. What's worse is the construction Lobbyists have convinced the Province of Ontario that it is safe to build 12 storey highrise buildings made of WOOD, which is obviously a "better building material" LOL

Great job on doing the video!...5 minutes and 45 seconds later before a drop of water was put on that fire is a terrible job!..why did they not use their onboard water for immediate initial attack until the hydrant lay was done??....that would be a huge fail for my department if we operated like that.

I understand the protocol but always wonder why a tanker or pumper truck isn't the first one on the scene with water or foam until the main force get's there.

it's takes more than 6 minutes to get water on it guys you need to watch te dutch fire dept. we use high pressure and you use low pressure. Maybe an idea that you will also use that because this fire would have had to expand much less.

Don't get me wrong... I have the utmost admiration for Fire Fighters... BUT.... this video was frustrating.... 6+ mins into the video and not a single drop of water was let loose.... The turn table was there before the video started as the support struts were deployed and the ladder was up a bit. The fire was small but by the time the water was flowing, the building was nearly cosumed..... Most of the water jets were going over the building and the one on the right while turning the ladder should have always had the water trained on what was burning not have it go over the roof and it seemed way too high to be efficient. I'm not a fire man but I think my observations have to be valid HUH?

They had water on the fire internally within two minutes of arrival, well before this video started. They cannot blast in water from the outside with crews/victims INSIDE, it could severely injure or kill them. Once they get the "all clear" from the inside crews, they can blast away. And keep in mind ANY construction site is LOADED with sawdust, exposed building materials, flammable adhesives, etc. AND open spaces with no firestops or doors, which will cause almost explosive spread of fire. (And this was started by a worked using a propane heater to warm up several 5 gallon buckets of adhesives!) Now there were plenty of mistakes on this one even from this view. No Lay-in to a hydrant for one, and not checking the release pin on the nozzle giving the ambulance a high pressure bath, amongst other things. One other commenter offered up that all the construction may have disabled some hydrants (or lowered the water pressure) which also complicated things. Hopefully everyone, from the General Contractor to the fire department can learn something from this. Finally, unlike most of the trolls on here, you worded your comment respectfully and without namecalling and uninformed BS and for that I thank you.

I can understand from this information and your description of what the interior might be like and how dangerous that could be, the crews outside couldn't get going straight away, although they were hindered by the other mistakes you pointed out. Things do make a bit more sense now, thank you for that NinjaBoy and the Old Man

You missed a LOT. First off, this is ONE ANGLE from a fixed location of a large fire scene. You CANNOT SEE OR KNOW what other things are taking place that the camera does not show!! You were NOT there, you DO NOT have the full picture, you DO NOT hear the radio traffic to get an idea of what else was going on at the time before the towers put water on. The Bman, they couldnt have blindly lobbed water in because they didn’t have any. There is zero excuse for an engine company to not have a water supply. No doubt the smoke column was visable from quite a distance. Every engine should have drop a feed at a hydrant.
