If you use Resolved then REC 709 and either use PS/C1 in REC 709 gamut which is similar to sRGB or do a dual calibration where 1 slot is REC 709 and the other is your prefer color space for Photo work.

Thanks for the video! Quick question hope you can answer: I have a LG 27GP850 wide gamut monitor. I prefer sRGB color space over wide gamut. I calibrated it using i1Display Pro with DisplayCal using "sRGB" setting. The result seems ok with 99.7% sRGB coverage, but the Red-Green-Blue colors are over saturated after the calibration. I searched around and AMD has a way to limit the color space to sRGB using Raedon's sRGB emulation. I enabled it in Readon driver, and then I calibrated the monitor again using i1Display Pro. This time I used 2 settings in DisplayCal. First setting I used was "sRGB", and the sRGB coverage dropped to 97.3% with AMD sRGB emulation enabled. Second time 2 used "Gamma 2.2" setting in DisplayCal, and the sRGB coverage in the end was 99.3% with AMD sRGB emulation enabled. The colors with "Gamma 2.2" setting looks more vibrant than the color with "sRGB" setting, but not that over saturated with AMD sRGB emulation disabled. Am I doing the right thing? Is it ok to calibrate the monitor again after enable the AMD sRBG emulation? And is it ok to use "Gamma 2.2" over "sRGB" in DisplayCal? Thanks in advance!

I would like to help you out but I am limited in my scope in for this particular situation because I use i1Profiler/ccProfiler software & optimized drivers from X-Rite for my calibration. I am unable to comment or help out with displaycal. My recommendation if you prefer to use displaycal is to post this question on their forum.

Hi Art, thanks for this vid. I'm considering the sw270c. I understand it has a 60w output with the USB-C port. Does this provide enough wattage to charge a MBP 16inch? cheers

It does just slower charging, or when the laptop is running hard, it might not charge it but keep it sustained.

Hi Art. I use my Sw 270c for photoediting and for daily use. I calibrated with i1 display pro as you said in other videos. When i am not editing i calibrated to srgb, so i can swap between profiles on the puck and of course change in display panel too. Is it ok to use this way? Thx

Hi Art, Thanks for you video! I have a SW271 and I am trying to calibrate slot 1 to PanelNative for edit and calibrate slot 2&3 to ARGB/SRGB/DCI-P3 for Reference, but it seems I must match the calibrate slot with the related ICC to get a correct output. It seems I can't just click the controller key for quick proving. Any idea or suggestion on it?

Yes you have to choose the corresponding icc profile, the hotkey puck can change the color mode but on the icc profile on your system, they are all independent systems. This said I would just use Panel Native and stick with it. Panel Native is like a slightly larger Adobe RGB. And if you ever need quick reference, I would just use the color mode build into the display rather than calibrating it. But this is just my personal preference. To be honest with CMM and Adobe ACE, I wouldn't even worry so much about checking the color because you are always setting the correct color tagged / gamut of any tagged media on the display.

Yes you can do that, like I said Panel Native is a slightly larger Adobe RGB, so if you can just stick with Panel Native. It is practically Adobe RGB. If you want a rough estimate you can do as stated, change the color mode and use the Panel Native ICC profiles. But if you want to be precise then calibrate the different slot. Personally I would try the Panel Native only option first and see how that works.

Great video, Art! I use my external display for Resolve and can set it to rec.709. I just can’t work out how to calibrate with rec.709 in iProfiler? I can’t find that setting/option.

That is not in i1Profiler setting. To calibrate your display in Rec 709 you have to put the display into rec 709 color mode or preset before calibration.

Should I use this to calibrate to rec709 gamma 2.4 or should I just use the “standard” calibration workflow when setting the monitor to rec709? Thanks for the help by the way. You can use that workflow, it just changes the gamma to 2.4, if you have the i1Display Pro Plus you can calibrate the BT1886 Gamma curve which is a logarithmic curve but if you only have the i1Display Pro you would have to use 2.4 as the gamma for video.

Dear Art, I see at Davinci Resolve there are something called Resolve color management or something similar, if you go File - project settings - color management, then you will see the input color space and timeline color space options, is that the similar thing as adobe color management? Or it is not the color management thing we are talking about in the video? Just get a little confused with all these names.

You can set both in and out to REC 709 Gamma 2.4, and set the color science to DaVinci YRGB Color Managed. But even with this it is probably still a good idea to calibrate the display to REC 709 G2.4 this way what you are seeing matches that of the program and that it does not need to do any conversion.

Once inside the REC709 mode, do I do all the calibration in that mode? or if I have to adjust the RGB values ​​do I have to go to user mode? 2. I would use REC 709 Mode for Resolve, when you in that mode you can't change out the RGB value, they are fixed. If you use the user mode it like calibration your display in Display P3 color mode with custom RGB for your use I advise against it. And for gamma yes you want to set the calibration to 2.4

Yes you can just calibrate the external display with the color mode that you want to use for each of the respective app and when you switch the color mode just switch the profile. You can have as many profile that you like.

Hi Art, You said that when using Resolve to set the Monitor to Rec 709 (I have that available on my Samsung Viewfinity S9 5K) What should I set my System Preferences on my Mac Mini to? Should I set that to BT709, Display P3, or just “Display” ? Or something else?

Additionally, I recently bought the Calibrite Display color checker Display Plus, but haven’t run a calibration yet but am available to do it now. I understand from what you’ve said in this video, to set my Samsung to Rec 709 and do the calibration from there, correct?

Great question, depending on the display, users setting generally would use the max gamut of the display similar to Display P3 or DCI-P3 depending on what gamut was used at the factory. This said on select BenQ PD display there are color modes with offer greater uniformity, i.e. PD3220U has Display P3 and sRGB calibrated for better uniformity. So if you are using these specific models with these nuances and features, I would stick with the color mode that offer the most benefit.

I have an Asus ProArt PA278QV monitor, I mainly do video editing on Davinci Resolve and delivery is just for web. I would like to ask, what profile should I set my Asus ProArt? Rec709? What Gamma? Or sRGB since it’s for web? I’m using Mac Mini M1 and on display settings, I can change profiles? What should I use? It has a PA278QV profile, sRGB, different Rec709 + gamma settings, some rec709 BT something profile, etc. I’m confused about this. Hope you can help.

Hi,can I use i1 Display studio and PME ? I just try but The PME do not recognizes i1Display studio....and....I have The SW240 one calibration is Panel Native, 2nd calibration is sRGB. Sometimes i wonder If The panel native is The best way to see wide color gamut in my SW240, why do I use sRGB gamut? Of course there is difference of saturation when I edit a raw file in panel mode and then I I try to see it in sRGB. I edit photos for web use only. Thanks

i1Display studio is not compatible with PME or any 3rd party software. This video will help kzread.info/dash/bejne/g6Fkl9KDg5uvn5M.html Panel Native is like Adobe RGB but a bit larger and it is the best. Like everything that I recommend on my channel, it is a recommendation based on extensive testing, however, you area always free to choose the setting that you prefer or works best for you. Whether you calibrate your SW in Panel Native or sRGB, when you are using a color aware program, the color should come out the same or really close with a tagged sRGB files.

Hey Art, thank you for the explanation! I heard that Davinci Resolve doesn’t count for the OS colour management and it needs to be calibrated separately. But if it’s true, why does the image in the Resolve viewer (monitor) changes as everything else when I change the display profile? It seems the opposite to what you and other people say, since it actually reacts to changing the profile. Or do you mean that since my monitor is calibrated in sRGB, Davinci Resolve doesn’t translate it’s working colour space (Rec709) to the Display colour space, and I see incorrect image? But then, why does the video footage, rendered from Davinci Resolve and viewed both in the OS and KZread in a browser, look identical to that in the Davinci Resolve viewer (monitor)? If I get what I see, why would I need to go for Rec709 system wide? And if I do calibrate my monitor for gamma 2.4 of Rec709, how will it effect my Windows and Mac experience using the environment which is meant for sRGB gamma - OS UI, browsers, editors, etc.. Won’t it get like you have a correct image in DVR and incorrect in everything else, which is not for Rec709? Sorry for lots of questions but I just can’t find a clear answer for that anywhere…

Yes Resolved does not count. Are you on Mac or PC? based on what you are telling me, I would guess Mac. So you are seeing the changes because the program does not live outside of the OS influence. And technically every time you change the color profile you are supposed to quit and relaunch the program so that it register the new icc. But what you are seeing is that icc applying throughout the OS and changing the way how Resolve looks, but that does not mean that Resolved is respecting the OS icc internally in the program when it is playing back your footage. Along the line of what you said, it does not translate. It probably looks similar because you are using sRGB gamut which is about the same as REC 709, there's really not much differences between the two. Your choice to calibrate in REC 709 or not is entirely up to you. If it does not make that much of a difference then I would not bother. As far as OS, UI etc, it is not really design with 2.2 in mind, it is just the de facto. So gamma 2.4 and again 2.2 will make a smidge difference not much. At least it is not that much to loose sleep over it.

@@ArtIsRight I was thinking on what you just said, and one thing is still missing in my understanding: I work on both Mac and Windows, (and Linux as well) and yes there is not that much difference between working in Rec709 or sRGB (at least until you get some dark and moody shots) but there is a big difference between working on a calibrated monitor and not calibrated. If Davinci Resolve doesn’t count for the icc profile in the OS, does it mean that it ignores the monitor calibration when it draws the UI or shows the footage in the viewer? Or does it mean only that it still respects the icc profile (or I would say, the operating system respects the profile when drawing the UI or showing the viewer) and the only thing it doesn’t do is translating from the working colour space (Rec709) to the display colour space (sRGB)? But at least the colours are right?

For the dark and moody shots as you mentioned, gamma plays a bigger role than the gamut. As far as I know it does not really use the OS color management system. This is where having a hardware calibrated display is nice because the adjustment is done on the panel and not the video card. I can tell you that on a Mac, macOS controls the color so the UI is done is in the icc that you set. But I don't believe that resolved translate the profile of the footage from say REC709 to sRGB. And the colors are right for you because, well, like I said before they are about the same gamut coverage.

I`m very new in this color things. This video color looks muted and blueish in my laptop screen (TN), but on my phone screen (IPS) the color looks a little bit saturated. I don`t know which color is truly the right one, the laptop or the phone. Is there a way to check? And how to keep the color consistent on any devices when viewing my photo after I color grade them in Photoshop? Thanks.

Neither. If you are not calibrating your display you should. None of your work should be proof on a phone screen, they are all different, even the best of them. So until you calibrate you won't get a good reference of what looks correct. And correct is relative, meaning that there's no absolute value, it is a range. Accuracy is determined after calibration by ∆e value, you can look up that video on my channel as well. But first start with a Calibrite ColorChecker Device such as the ColorColor Checker Display Pro and then you can go from there.

Can you create a video about choosing the best monitor (especially 32 inches) for color grading and go for the cheap to expensive? I'm having a hard time finding a good/cheap 32 inch 4K monitor and this pd3220u is so expensive! I'd appreciate it.

Thank you! So to answer your question, I would not go with the cheap one. If budget is on your mind, I would look at equivalent displays to the PD3220U by other brands, the reality is that the price range would be similar. If you do any pro work on these display you don't want to go for the low end. And think of this as an investment rather than a big purchase. I would get a good one now than get a lower end one just to get rid of it in the future. This said, I would look at the ∆E quantification from the manufacture, you want something that is below 3 from the factory. You want a good Display P3 or DCI-P3 Coverage in addition to any functions that you might need. What are some others ones that you are looking at?

@@ArtIsRight Thank you. I guess you are right. Currently, the ones I'm looking for are: BenQ PD3200U, BenQ EW3280U, BenQ EW3270U, BenQ PD3200Q, Acer PE320QK. They are all 32 inches. But I think the best thing in this price range is PV270 which is 27 inches and I've seen a lot of colorists are recommending it. Maybe I wait for a few months and get a higher-end monitor? Or maybe since I'm just starting, I can go with one of these options, and then after a year, I upgrade it. It would be awesome if you let me know what 32-inch monitor is good even if it's not the best. something temporary that you would choose.

If I have a choice between the PD and if you can still get the PV for a good price. I would go with the PV270, it is one of the best panel that BenQ has to offer and that same panel has been upgraded in the SW270C. This said if you are looking at 32" I would chose the PD3200U and the the PD3200Q in that order. I would skip the EW all together for color critical work. Based on just the displays in the list along, never mind 4K or any connectivity. 1. SW270C 2. PV270 3. PD3220U 4. PD3200U 5. PD3200Q 6. PE320QK If you look on the webpage, it does not list percentage of gamut coverage nor does it list delta e. At least what you get with the PD line is an individual calibration with ∆E report from factory. And you know where each models stands gamut wise.

Thank you so much for this video!! But why should I calibrate my monitor in rec709 when grading in DR16? So if I change my color mode to rec709 I dont have the benefits of the wide gammut p3 color space, right? Why would I do this?

If you don't see the point, it's ok. What you need to know is that videos uploaded to the web or generally distributed are not encoded with DCI-P3 so the benefit that you talked about is really null and is only when you edit. If you choose to encode it in DCI-P3 you can but many display out there can't even show that much color to start with.

Hi, I’m a film student and I’m intrested in colour grading and dop. Your video is very helpful for me to do calibration. But i’m curiosity you still think rec.709 is better than DCI-P3 because the industry already changed and Apple display (from 2016-now) use DCI-P3 mainly. I’m confuse which color space is better to do colorgrading on davinci. If I can get your advice, it would be helpful a lot for me. Thank you

Hi, Can I just ask, if a print shop says they want the image files in jpeg SRGB and my m1 Mac mini is using the calibrated SRGB profile from the i1 display pro and the Ben Q PD3220U is also on SRGB why would the prints not look the same a the monitor ? Print books come back much darker. However 6x9 prints from another print shop company that also say send SRBG also come back different again. Should I be adjusting colours in Lightroom / photoshop while in the SRGB profile ? what's going wrong ?

I have a basic Viewsonic monitor, nothing fancy. I do photo editing with Photoshop. Before I run the i1 Display Studio calibration, is it okay to set the color gamut on the monitor to sRGB? The other gamut choices are either way too bright, too blue or too yellow. Thanks for your help.

You can, but you can also adjust the settings on the other gamut as well. And then use profiling to further adjust and refined the colors.

@@ArtIsRight Which gamut choice do you suggest using? I tried calibrating with NATIVE gamut selection and the lowest Corrected Calibration (CCC) Achieved by the software was 7024K. With sRGB as the chosen gamut the CCC Achieved was 6765K.

For your setup I would not use native, I would choose D65 and and then choose the gamut that you like to work in sRGB or a larger gamut if your display have that preset mode.

Hi Art. I did the calibration (i1Display) with PME but I don't trust it. I used the "best values" you showed in your other video for the sw270C. PME validation only uses a gray scale and 3 colors! Seriously 3 colors? I just ran a calibration with 1Profiler and it gave me terrible results. Can I calibrate the monitor using 1Profiler? Thanks

Like the more expensive calibration software, CALMAN, PME follows fairly closely in the way how the program validates the calibration. If you don't trust it the SW270C can be calibrate with CalMAN, kzread.info/dash/bejne/iJOortKahLiraKQ.html but that software is expensive, and is the best as well. This said, you can choose to calibrate it however you like. Using i1Profiler is ok too, just know that you are doing a software calibration only vs PME you are doing a hardware calibration kzread.info/dash/bejne/a5yKyNmQaa-xaKg.html

That is a programming choice from BenQ and it modeled very similarly to CalMAN. CalMAN does not validate color checker either, unless you specify it to. Outside of the photo editing standard and i1Profiler software, the color checker classic validation is rarely used for any validation.

I'm still very new to this got my pd2720u the other day. I am a graphic designer and either make content for print and web. So I imagine that I will calibrate in display p-3? I don't even have a calibrator yet. When I do is it just a case of calibrating once on display p3 and then that changes all other modes to be closer to 100% or will I have to do multiple calibrations? if that's even an option

Calibration are specific for each color mode but you can just stick with Display P3 and just do the calibration once.

No worries about the question. The calibration have to be specific to each color mode. Because each color modes are tuned differently, the color output are different, so if you want to get the most accurate color from the other modes that you might use, you should set the display to those color mode and calibrate that specific mode and then name the icc profile with that color mode name. This way when you switch to that specific color mode you would also change the system icc profile to the calibrated one that corresponds to that color mode. Hope this helps. I have an ASUS PA32UC connected to my MacBook Pro 16" 2019 using a Thunderbolt 3 cable. But when I play HDR content on KZread, it doesn't actually display in HDR. But when I play the same content on my MacBook Pro screen, it shows in HDR. Any ideas?

MBP screen does not really do HDR, also HDR on KZread is and has been broken for sometime now. I would try another source and see if it work. Also you should enable HDR in system preferences - display.

You can do it without tools, there are videos out there that you can reach for. There are more reasons to not calibrate if you are going that route.

hey thank you , your videos been helpful all this time while i was getting my new monitor and running calibrations and profiles. i calibrated my monitors for SRGB because web browser was all over saturated and now it very good very accurate. the only problem i had was something that you mention editing on photoshop is nice i can see the colors and when i put it on the web as SRGB they look the same as on photoshop. the problem come when i preview photos inside windows they look bad over saturated im going to watch that video and see if i can get a program that would help with that

Hey Art, just checking on my understanding. I have sw270c and I ran 2 successful under 2 max and under 1 avr delta. I programmed gen 2 hotkeypuck and put in calibration 1 slot a default entry at native panel d65 , luminance 100 candela and the other same settings but at 5800 kelvin and 90 candela in 2 slot for printing . I like how you expressed that this way my color aware programs like PS will put out whatever profile I assign , adobe rgb or srgb and it will register correctly on the monitor. My question is does the hardware monitor calibration take precedent over the color settings in PS ? When I go to edit >color settings in PS it lists my cal 2 next to rgb monitor and I can change this by going in color management on the OS where it lists my benq monitor with only my 2 calibrations as I removed my old monitor profiles. If I make my cal 1 as default then it does show in Photoshop color settings as the profile associated with the rgb monitor. I am in win 11 and does it matter what shows here as the monitor will always default to the selected cal and show correctly whatever I output from photoshop. I think you said you should set your working space in photoshop as the benq monitor profile. Other videos I watched said it should only show next to rgb monitor. Which is correct and do I have this set up right?

" Because you change the Color temperature during the calibration stage, make sure that you change the corresponding icc profile when you switch color mode as well. And you can't do this while Color aware programs are open, otherwise what you see won't get update properly. You'll just see an approximation. These program request for display icc at launch only and will not refresh again in the usage duration. Yes and no, in a sense that what you see will be based on the calibration that you did even if you change slot. But based on the answer above, if you didn't change icc profile for display in the display setting and restart the program then that would be an approximate setting. "When I go to edit >color settings in PS it lists my cal 2 next to rgb monitor and I can change this by going in color management on the OS where it lists my benq monitor with only my 2 calibrations as I removed my old monitor profiles." -In PS you can choose the display profile, however, I would not choose the default monitor profile, I would scroll down the list and choose the profile for the display. The one that PS default too at the top can cause some color warning, even though it is using the same icc, the policies apply are a bit different. What I am talking about can be seen here at the beginning of this video kzread.info/dash/bejne/eall0NN-lpvcqso.html - So for your situation you have 2 choices, you can choose display profile and if you change the display icc in system preferences and relaunch PS, if you choose monitor icc it should always default to the correct one. - my best recommendation is to choose the standard reference color gamut that you want to work in, Adobe RGB, sRGB or otherwise and don't choose the display profile. This way with CMM, the video shared above you don't really have not worry about all of this and still see correct color. "If I make my cal 1 as default then it does show in Photoshop color settings as the profile associated with the rgb monitor. " Only if you change the icc profile in display setting manually and restart PS "I am in win 11 and does it matter what shows here as the monitor will always default to the selected cal and show correctly whatever I output from photoshop." Since you have 2 slot with different color temp, I would make sure that you change to the correct icc when switching slot and relaunch app. If you don't one would be accurate and the other would be approximate, which can work but there are not guarantees. "I think you said you should set your working space in photoshop as the benq monitor profile." Variably yes, but in your situation, the exception is that you should use the standard reference profile instead, stated above. "Other videos I watched said it should only show next to rgb monitor." If it is my video let me know which one, if it not, I may not necessary follow that advice to the T. There area always exception to the rule, many other videos don't know this and will lead you down the wrong rabbit hole. "Which is correct and do I have this set up right?" Follow my advice here and follow up if you have any more questions

@@ArtIsRight Yes, thanks Art, I read it and went to the linked video you suggested above and realized that was the video I saw earlier where in you placed your monitor calibration as the working space in PS. That was in time stamp section14:28 of your above linked video. I see what you're saying about getting your calibration from further down the list I normally editd raw files and before on my old hd monitor, I had it soft calibrated and I would use the adobe rgb as a working space because I would sometimes print on my adobe rgb canon printer.If I would use the editing result on web I'd convert to srgb before exporting.Now that I can see the colors on this sw270c monitor I was thinking of the same workflow with the advantage I can now see the colors. When I saw you use the monitor calibration as the working space in PS was where I was getting confused. I thought the monitors hard calibration communicated with the color aware programs. If not, I see whenever I use my calibration for printing I must change the working space to that paticular calibration profile, then restart photoshop. So, I guess my question now is, my current understanding correct. I do apoligize as I thought I knew color management but don't want to venture down any rabbit holes trying to wrap my old head around this topic.

It communicates with color aware program via the icc profile that is distributed from the system, regardless of what you setup in PS. What you setup in PS is really just the color conversion for RGB value translations from one color space to the next and the gamut volume of what colors can and cannot be shown. This is the reason why I suggested setting PS gamut to Adobe RGB in your situation to simplify things.

Spyder X has a build in USB-A connection, either plug that directly into your PC or the display you have the appropriate USB Uplink cable between the display and computer.

What if my monitor has "Standard mode"? It is very close to "Adobe RGB mode". Should I calibrate it on Standard mode, that mode sets all colors to max.

That is a conversation that you need to have with your display manufacture support department to determine what color gamut it is. It could be Adobe RGB, it could not. Also that is dependent on the display spec as well.

Hello ! I don't understand what is causing this issue , I have calibrated my monitor using adobe rgb mode with your recommanded settings for argb then now when I preview my Srgb files they looks how they should in Argb monitor mode (benq SW240) but totally dull in Srgb monitor mode ... Should they not be the same ? I've tried with Windows image viewer, lightroom, photoshop and fast stone image viewer. The files have proper srgb color space included to them. I'm using latest version of PME on Windows 10 with x-rite i1 display pro device. I don't understand how SW monitor handle their Srgb mode and what to do to get correct argb and correct srgb switching of mode, I thought argb was including srgb colors. Thanks for your help Art 🙏

No they should not be the same. sRGB is a smaller color gamut and depending on which sRGB you use, the build in color mode on the display or the PME setting where you choose sRGB the result will be different there too. This video will explain why kzread.info/dash/bejne/e6Spw8huqavYn8o.html To get proper mode you have to calibrate 1 slots to Adobe RGB, use that PME generated profile for this slot. And on the other slot calibrate to sRGB and when you choose this slot change the system profile to the PME Generated profile that corresponds with this slot. Furthermore, all image viewing or color aware programs need to be restart so that they can properly launch with the color profile for gamut translation.

Short answer is yes. For video it would depend on the app. If you use resolve there are some specific way which you might want to calibrate the display.

If your display is calibrated in DCI-P3, but can't be changed, is it accurate to edit, export to sRGB and view in sRGB on the DCI-P3 display? My laptop claims (backed up by multiple reviews) to be 100% DCI-P3, Adobe RGB and sRGB, but there's no option to switch between them. I'm having trouble understanding how it could be 100% dci-P3 and 100% Adobe RGB simultaneously.

What laptop do you have? Usually there's an app or utility from the manufacture that would allow for this change. But to answer your earlier question, yes, even if you use P3, sRGB would still be accurate because 1. sRGB fits within P3 and 2. This kzread.info/dash/bejne/eall0NN-lpvcqso.html

Look at your laptop specs, the only official one listed is P3, so I am afraid you are stuck with that. No way to do Adobe RGB. But like I said because sRGB is smaller you'll be ok.

Hi Sir I am a photographer. I have a BenQ sw240 monitor. Which color gamut/space should I choose to calibrate my monitor when using Palette Master Element? Panel native, Adobe RGB or SRGB? My images are mainly used on the web. Can I shoot with Adobe RGB (in camera) from the beginning. Then use Adobe RGB color gamut space in photoshop to edit as well. Finally, convert to SRGB colour space when uploading the image to ensure the highest color possible? Is there any downside to doing this? Or should I stick to the SRGB color space from start to finish because my current use is mainly for the web? In order to get most of the colors from my camera sensor until finally enjoying the full color space of my sw240 which way would you recommend? Thanks

What you said is fine, nothing wrong with it. The semantic is that regardless of the color gamut that you tagged in your camera, sRGB or Adobe RGB, if you shoot RAW, it will capture the largest color space that the sensor is capable of, so for the most part tagging does not matter much in RAW, but it does in JPG.

I Guess this went just straight over my head.. I'm just trying to get my monitor to show games and videos and pictures and windows correctly. I bought a SpyderX and I used the software that came with, and I also tried Displaycal. seems the best way is to not use a profile, but to increase my contrast and then use the Spyder to just calibrate the monitors brightness and Red Green Blue settings. But it's hard to find any help for this. seems it's all about calibrating for use with software to make image or videos. not to just view it. Still not happy. But it's getting better. Wish someone smarter than me could make a video on how to just set up a monitor for General use. Consumers want nice colors too.

Is 2k display,96% SRGB and 73%Adobe RGB and 100% DCPl3 is fine combination for a 17.3 inch laptop display?

You don't have an option with laptop displays and even though the spec might be good, the backlight and everything else is miniaturized in laptop and/or optimized for lower power consumption so there only so much that they can do when compared to an external display. The spec that you shared does not match up 100% DCI P3 should cover 100% of sRGB gamut.

I bought the LG 27UP850 for my mac mini M1. But it has no Rec 707 picture mode. Does this mean i cant use it for color grading? I specifically bought it to grade in davinci resolve.

You can, but you won't be calibrating the display in REC 709 gamut since you can't choose a gamut that is not pre calibrated from the factory in software calibrated display. If you are in the return window then take it back.

You can certainly calibrate your display in P3 color mode yes. As for an alternative, I would recommend looking at BenQ PD line or any other make that is a professional and not office or entertainment displays.

I just bought a mac mini with a final cut pro, I am looking for a right monitor for video and pic editing..someone told me to check refresh rate on monitor specs and it should be around 144 to get right p3 colour gamut....can you please help me. Thanks

Not sure where you receive that information, however, that is incorrect. You don't need 144 Hz to get good color. Higher refresh rate monitor are there primary for gaming. All pro display with great color are limited to 60 Hz at the moment, this is because everything is a balancing act, higher refresh rate display usually don't have as great of color or viewing angle for instance. P3 color space is not the best for photo editing, that again is misleading. Adobe RGB coverage is what you want to look for with regards to Photo Editing. For video the standard right now is still REC 709, P3 is not being widely used and deployed just yet. The new standard for video is REC 2020 but very few displays and TV support that. If you are looking for good color, I would consider BenQ SW or PD line kzread.info/dash/bejne/oH-VzKqKmJfLdqg.html

DCI P3 in movie industry kinda gives me the vibes of HiRes audio in music industry. They long for wider more saturated gamut while 99% of movies have very muted, often dual color tone. Music industry longs for high dinamic range 24 bit format while 99% of music is delivered with excessive dynamic range compression.

Got it. I like to get more information for you. Please described to me where your images are showing over saturated (all locations / apps that shows this). The file is it RAW, JPEG. Color space tagged in the file sRGB, Adobe RGB, PPRGB. What is your color setting for RGB in PS? And the program and exact setting that you used to calibrate the SW271C. Also are you seeing this on the iMac display too, are you calibrating that display? What is your calibrate device?

Hello Art! Thanks For Your Awesome Content. I've recently purchased an Asus Proart PA278QV monitor (calman certified), which has multiple presets like standard, srgb, and rec 709 and others. I purchased this monitor mainly for photo editing. I noticed that the standard mode and srgb mode have totally different lighting conditions. If i use srgb mode for photo edit will it be over exposured in other devices as srgb seems much darker in my monitor? Which mode should I use for photo editing for online content? Are all those modes calibrated? I don't have any color calibration tools.

Those modes are preset calibrated modes from factory. And yes different mode with different gamut and conditions will look different. sRGB darker is fine and won't over exposed on other display, I can see when you might think that. For now I would choose sRGB

For hardware one most, if not all does not cover this gamut yet. Support for a high percentage of REC 2020 is not prevalent at the moment. Also most, again, if not all OLED display for at the moment are software calibrated ones only, so you are reliant on the color mode calibrated from the factory. To answer your other question, offset printing is CMYK base and you are better covered by Adobe RGB. REC 2020 is for video in HDR it has nothing to do with printing.

Depends. The general answer is that you don't need to unless you are using 2 BenQ SW hardware calibrated displays.

why did you say this? 1:48 the MacBooks has a colour profile option to choose different colour modes from in the display settings

Because the understand that you have is incorrect. Older pre XDR displays may have profile yes but that profile change the image output after the fact not pre. So how they are calibrated from the factory is how they are going to be, you can't change that. Profile does not change the color mode of the display by any means it just changes the color output which you are not really supposed to use any of the reference profile listed anyways. They are not conformed to the display.

@@ArtIsRight What if I have a monitor that has only 95% DCI p3 color mode can I calibrate it to like Rec709 or SRGB?

my asus proart v32 has 100%s-rgb 100%adobe rgb and 98%CI P3mode and DICOM mode and at a lower percent rec709 what mode on my monitor wil display highest collor quallety it is a10bit monitor

For your display it is best to custom calibrate it with Asus software. And the best mode would depend on what you do, photo - Adobe RGB, Video either REC 709 or P3 depending on the need.

what do you mean by natural gamut? do you mean neutral? And even still what do you mean by this? there's really no natural gamut, just the one that choose for your workflow.

You can't calibrate the display to print, you can soft proof but one should never do that. If you control the workflow and color management well it should match

I think they are both great displays. I personally would choose BenQ, not because I am their brand ambassador but I because I know for certain that they rigorously calibrate their displays at the factory. I am sure that other brands does this as well, but BenQ PD line stand at the top of the list with the SW line.

Right and what screen are you viewing this on? Has it been calibrated, are there any other software biasing your colors. These are edited on hardware calibrated displays. So I know for a fact that the source looks good. Also "look good" is highly subjective and relative but I would start with the display.
