Finally Successful Growing Celeriac

After years of less than stunning results, I think I've successfully started growing celeriac. I'm not sure what problems have been, but celeriac growing has been my nemesis. So I invite you to watch this video That shows beautiful results of my celeriac that is ready to be planted in its final growing spot.

I've tasted celeriac first time some years ago. It is the best tasting root veg I've had. I made a puree of it and served with duck breast and a glaze of red wine and balsamic reduction. My most fancy dish ever for my better halve😂 That root is an underrated vegetable!

I'm too new to veg growing to say I have a definite veg that I struggle with. Last year my coriander bolted almost immediately so I need to change what I did there in some way. Basil outside for me hasn't been very successful. Either gets munched by slugs or bolts. My plan is to just grow lots and lots and put the basil in a bunch of different places and hope some plants work ok. I've tried Brussel Sprouts twice - once a few years back, and once last year - and both times never got past the seedling stage due to what I now realised were flea beetles. I know now that I need to grow them indoors for much longer and keep them covered with a fine mesh for most of the growing time until Autumn when the flea beetles have come and gone. So hopefully I can do better than the last attempts this season.

Did you know, Karen, that if you let radishes go to seed the long skinny seedpods are absolutely delicious? They taste just like the radish. I'm letting a few of mine go to seed on purpose so I can get those yummy pods. I'm also going to see what they taste like dehydrated.

Hi Christine, sorry for my late response. I add mycorrhizal fungi when I transplant my seedlings into the ground. It's a natural occurring fungus in the soil and I find the addition at transplant to get the plants off to a great start. Do not use it on brassicas as they do not respond to it.

Now that the curse of not being able to grow it has passed, I'm going to start some more this week so they can get a few touches of frost on them to get even tastier. Yum Yum, Audrey

Hi Terry, mycorrhizae are fungi that have a symbiotic relationship with the roots of many plants. The fungi which commonly form mycorrhizal relationships with plants are ubiquitous in the soil. It can be purchased in a powder form and I add it to everything I plant except members of the brassica family. Apparently they don't play well with others! Hope that helps.
