I feel contrary to many of the other comments on bag size. Unless you're going to design a full-on backpack for carrying all a DM's needs in one bag, I'm going to need a bag for all my other crap anyway. So make the bag as minimal as possible, or even turn the bag into simple a protective sleeve for the screen that I can put into a larger bag.

Absolutely this. They need the interior section as it's own, compact unit, no straps, no handle, no nothing, and that can then be sold _with_ the outer bag with handle if desired.

When you're a DM on the go you're carrying more than just your screen (books, notes, dice, miniatures, etc.) I'd want an option for a bag that had this storage integrated but could also carry more.

It feels like thats outside the scope of this product. Plus as a GM myself, between all the possible books, screen, minis, laptop, play surface, snacks, and random stuff players leave at my house. There could never be a single bag or box that fits everything.
@JKSSubstandard

Yeah. I either want a slightly larger bag with another pocket that fits the tabletop system. Maybe handle on side like Jason suggested, then zipper both ends. End 1, DM screen, laptop and source books. End 2, pens, tabletop system, dice bag.
The non-veneer panels still look like cabinet doors from a kitchen. @ 6:03 the idea of making the angle steeper would help with that, I believe. These videos showing your design process and prototyping are great, both for the GM screen and Sit-stand desk.

You should check w/ a company called Frost River in Duluth, MN. They do waxed canvas and leather, all US made, and would do a great job for the bags!

Holy heck yeah Frost River makes amazing bags. Some awesome neighbors to have, their crew make hella good things.
It’s amazing that manufactures cannot seem to read drawings and understand what they communicate. If your doing more slots in the bag then do 5 slots: 3 - for the dm screen panels 1 - dm guide hardback book 1- players handbook hardback book. That then lets folks scale up the panel count w/o needing a bigger bag, or change around the content at will (thin laptop vs book etc- but what are the laptop dimensions and aspect ratio? ). Use quality hardware at all costs and quality materials. If it feels like a commodity laptop bag it’s not on brand. YYK zippers and high quality (think suitcase / luggage ) materials.
If you are making a carrying case/totebag(?) for a DMs screen; it NEEDS the following: dice holder/sleeve; something for writing implements; maybe an extra sleeve for rulebooks? Just spit-ballings ideas here! Making it smaller isn't always the best idea.
@InfamousCook1e

Rule books is a must, even if it's a different, bigger bag design. I find there's always a stack of books in a shopping bag or backpack somewhere nearby when playing at a table

A dice holder would not be a good idea for the bag. I don't know a single DM that has less than 10 sets of dice. My regular DM has at least 100 full sets. Everything else tho is a good idea
WW: are you all keeping your prototypes and other historical items in some sort of time capsule or historical library? eventually some day you will want to go back and visit older ideas that were generated, either to try to solve a problem or just for fun. also would be cool to have that stuff in display cases for any factory tours you could give.
I like having the side channels/grooves since it adds more detail to the back. And if you have stuff on that top magnet racker, using the shield texture will knock into it since you're moving the acrylic up, instead of to the side.
When you talk about the textured acrylic vs the grooves for removing the acrylic panel, it's possible that people with weaker grip strength may not be able to exert the pressure required to get enough friction between their finger and the panel to remove it.
i feel that the shield grip is gonna cause problems with the magnetic rail when you have things hanging there.

I think the bored-in magnets really take the DM screen to a new level, and I'm excited to see the CAP being featured! Although, if the CAP was designed for the players in mind, maybe make an exclusive edition for the Dungeon Master?

The bag should have a spare slot for at least one rpg rule book to go with the shield. I want the paladin set to match my adventuring party kit I just bought. Loving all of it!
Thank you Johan 🙌 I'm just going to blindly trust whatever Doug says from now on. Solid wood all the way
I wouldn't want to put my laptop in that bag with such strong of magnets in the GM screen. It is also why I'm a bit apprehensive about purchasing the current incarnation of the GM screen itself. I, and most of the people I play D&D with, use their laptop/phone when they play/DM. I would be very worried that the magnets could cause some irreversible and expensive damage to someone's device(s). That is really the only concern I have about the product. Other than that, I think it looks great!
@bensemusx

An HDD would be the only thing that could be affected by consumer magnets and even then you would likely have to get the magnets right up against the HDD. Very few laptops are still being sold with HDD's. Everything is solid state now.
@lobose13
2 жыл бұрын
I understand your concern with having the laptop in the bag, but clearly your d&d players even sitting next to the DM screen with their laptop are not at risk, you would need a much more powerful electro-magnet to do real damage and even then only HDD hardrives would be damaged
@ShaedStealer
2 жыл бұрын
Are you insinuating that those magnets have a magnetic field over a foot or more? Magnetic fields coming from consumer magnets are only effective a couple inches away at most. The further you get, the less strength it has. Unless you're rubbing everyone's phone on your DM screen, it'll be fine. Even then, many phones have magnets inside them already, like the iphone's magsafe charging.
@wuzzy41123
2 жыл бұрын
@@bensemusx I appreciate you educating me on the fact that it would not likely harm my laptop. Knowing it can damage an HDD can still be an issue, however. I know that some of my friends' laptops are fairly old and I don't know if they would be made with solid-state drives. As for myself, I use a newer laptop, although, I also use an external HDD when I DM. I think it would just be a matter of when the external HDD would end up right against the magnet (due to shuffling stuff around throughout the session).
@wuzzy41123
2 жыл бұрын
@@ShaedStealer To be fair, my laptop sits right behind my DM screen when I am DM'ing. It would likely be no more than 2 inches away from the GM Screen at any given time during the session, which is where my concern grew from. A commenter above clarified that my laptop would not be in any danger, although I do use an external HDD when I DM, so that could still be an issue.
Thief DM Screen looks fire I love it. For the bag I want a bag that has more carrying capacity for all my dm items as i don't want to be carrying more bags then I need to.
Does anyone else get a flashback to the topper bags when they saw the bag smaller than the prototype?
Way to go, Edittors! dont let doug tell you when to cut. Haha
Regarding the laptop in the carrying bag with the GM Screen, depending on the strength of the magnet, it might be able to wipe the hard drive of the laptop if they are too close. To take care of that, you could use a shielding material inside the bag dividers(or at least one of them) to block the magnetic fields (if they are too strong), or just don't market it as a thing to do xD
@redilred

Most modern laptops have solid state drives, magnets won't hurt those.
@flamepulse42
2 жыл бұрын
not a chance of that happening. the magnets have to be very powerful for even a chance of that happening, there are layers of protections on drives to prevent taht plus the out layers of the laptop itself. and if its solid state drive like most new laptops are, then no worries at all.
Loving the wood combinations looks, the Rogue and Wizard combinations are very nice! However! I would like to see an actual unique GM combination in the style of the class of the month series
I’m sensing a future for wyrmwood wearables. Great quality bags to match your great quality gear seems like a no brainier. Seeing as you’re also going for a sit stand desk, a laptop bag makes a lot of sense too. Honestly though, a bag for just your screen is hardly going to be enough for any GM, but at least it’s a nice way to transport and protect that beautiful wood.
It is so massively comforting to see Jason back in a commander vest.
*If I could afford the veneer version*... I would be thrilled to start seeing the veneer crack/chip off. I want a battle-damaged barbarian screen that I can pass down like a sacred family weapon to my son's son's son.
I cannot wait for this. Having it match the CAP offerings is a cool idea
Things that would be nice on the bag: Zipper or snap pouch for dice / dice vaults / hero vaults (maybe a larger padded pocket space for the tabletop trays but you'd have to be careful of breaking the tray edges if the bag gets tossed around) Zipper or snap pouches for misc (phone, charger, etc) Pencils/ Pen holder (interior and maybe it fits your mechanical pencils) Space for laptop (also could fit tabletop tray) Outside the bag, have a leather loop with a snap (like the deck boxes) where you can mount a rolled up battle mat. Mesh water bottle pocket on exterior Embroider the Wyrmwood logo Brass loop for carabiners / luggage tag / hangeable stuff Rotate so the bag it opens on long edge. Bobby knows he wants to make this his new EDC bag. Also, when we gonna get some Wyrmwood wind chimes?
Love the cardboard prototype Johann made. With that said, my thoughts: 1. I want the bag to protect my screens, no more. 2. It should be able to fit into a back pack with my other GM supplies and books. 3. It should be able to fit 4 panels. Some games need a 4 panel screen. The ability to slide a notebook or something into the 4th slot gives some flexibility. Maybe offer 2 versions? A 3 and a 4 panel? 4. I don’t think it needs handles. I’m not anti-handle persay, but I am unlikely to be carrying that bag by itself. It will either be in another bag or on a stack of other items. 5. Cushiony handles if going the handles route. 6. That duffle bag handle clasp thingy needs to go if going the handles route. 7. The bag is for storage and transportation of the screen. Just a reminder to keep you focused. I would love storage options for my other DM items, but they do not need to be stored in the GM screen bag.
The true answer to the bag situation is multiple bag styles. 1. Just DM screens and a note book/laptop. Like you spoke on. 2. "The DMs Tool Bag". More duffle-style. Heavy duty. 5 slots. For the DM screen, note book/laptop, Players/DMs Handbook , an under carriage slot with a case for miniatures. Side pockets for pens, pencils, spell templates. Pencil sleeves AND Dice Tube sleeves. I think the goal should be to make a bag that handles ALL needs. Instead of "Oh I got this special bag for my DM screen that I also carry with my backpack AND my miniature case." You could even pad the bottom of the Tool Bag enough to put the straps on the bottom and allows consumers to carry it like a back pack as well as a tool bag.
score the wood with a template and a kirisashi, and the tearout will be significantly reduced. or a tiny v-bit groove at a shallow D.O.C to produce the same scoring effect
I see several comments about people wanting extra storage added to the bag for all types of accessories, but I personally think you should keep as minimal and efficient as possible. I currently use a roller bag to haul all my books and supplies and if you intend to meet everyone's needs you would have to design something similar. I think having something that protects the screen during storage and travel is enough.
What even is the editing on this stuff? I lost my shit about every 5 seconds. Brilliant. Keep it up, folks.
Others have mentioned this as well, but I wouldn't store my laptop with the magnets. The 4th pouch would be useful for one of my books, or my GM notebook though, so I like the 4 pouch design. As for materials, I'm personally a big fan of waxed canvas, which I think looks really good with brass fittings and leather accents.

as long as its a solid state drive the magnets should be an issue
Loving the way the DM Screen & bag are coming together... for sure gonna have to get one.
Johann, your nautilus is insane. Awesome model and sub.
Glad Jason called out the 3 vs 4 panel storage space in the bag. As far as features on a bag, having the versatility to use the 4th space for 3 panel people is hot, but will having super strong magnets close to electronics be safe? Just something to consider. Also, as a GM, I have a lot of stuff to carry around already, it’s impossible for a GM screen bag to replace that for me personally with my setup. Having a document pouch would be helpful, especially as someone who runs multiple systems, but having space for pencils, etc, is a solution I already have covered in my backpack. If more accessories get added (initiative tracker being the big one), I want to have space to store that in the bag, and hope to see that in the next revision. Love the progress, so happy this project is moving forward, really excited to get my grubby little hands on one of these soon!
The bag is looking good! Having it be specifically for the DM screen is a great idea. Storage, protection and portability. If I needed books with me, I’d carry a backpack. The pencil sheathes and then specific pockets for wyrmwood products would be amazing!
Love the class themed panels 👌🏻 love the idea of the bag being briefcase style with the zip on the side. If WW are gonna make a bag for it, definitely include storage for stationary or a dice vault. Could do with looking into bags and stuff for other WW products too
If you're making a bag, i want to carry EVERYTHING. My screen, my dice/hero vaults, my dice tray, my dice tower, my books, my papers, and my pencils. Now to hold all of that you're going to need one giant bag, so i am sure there is a compromise somewhere. But i'm sad that none of my other Wrymwood products have a bag now.
Truly loving these videos going down the design of the gm screen super excited to see the end product

instead of a carrying case, I'd go full backpack -- make the slots for the DM screens big enough to fit a standard-ish laptop size with storage other than slots too. Like a lot of modern backpacks, but with extra laptops sleves. Would be good both for carrying around other accessories (deck boxes, minis, dice, etc) when gaming, but could also be used more on the daily for your laptop, a tablet, etc etc. Way more versatile product that will have broader appeal. My uneducated guess would also be that you could work with an existing manufacturer and customize/extend one of their existing SKUs instead of making something so bespoke which may help control costs.

Hell, when I travel, I end up carrying an unhealthy number of electronics (tablet, work laptop, personal laptop, maybe a switch/steam deck) and a backpack with a bunch of laptop sized slots would be awesome.
Yesssss, I’m so pumped to see CAP wood combinations for the panels! 🙌 I can’t wait to see this up for sale, I’m all about this 😍
Thank you Johann, you beautiful immaculate craftsman!~
I get (and partially agree with) the people saying "if you're going to make a bag, let it hold all my stuff". I think the "extra storage" up top that Johann has acting like a clam shell would be a perfect place for a pocket/slot to hold a dice tray (maybe a slot/insert for hexy tiles). I think a couple of pen holder slots would be a nice touch (I'm half tempted to recommend elastic so that it can hold a variety of sizes, from pen to dry erase etc. but I don't want it to feel cheap). That being said; I kind of think of this carrying case as a very nice laptop sleeve. It's job is to protect the valuables inside (internally from rubbing against each other or other items | externally from larger objects, should have a touch of padding/give to minimize dents on panels from things hitting the exterior) and potentially slide into another larger bag with other goods. For the sake of minimizing costs and complexity, I think the carrying case should primarily be used for panel storage, not a bag for all your DM needs. Each DM has a wide variety of accessories that they bring varying even from game to game (maps, minis, dice, books, projectors, fog machine, kitchen sink, etc.). IMO this case should serve a primary purpose, and that's panel storage. Minimize the size/bulkiness of the handles so that this case can more easily slide/store in an additional larger bag. Panel related notes: --- Acrylic --- - I'm a big fan of the etched thumb remover. I agree with Jason that it should just be the Wyrmwood logo. - I think if I were to have the acrylic add-ons, I would like them to be flush with the rest of the surface. Potentially counter sink the panels the width of the acrylic so its flush? Could help with Acrylic storage as well. (Not sure if that's possible with the current magnet solution/depth). - Question for storage, do I leave the acrylic on the panel when putting in in the carrying case, or are they to be stored separately? - If separate, there should be an extra slot in the bag for them (also I think that acrylic on acrylic rubbing would cause scratching/marring) --- Side Slots --- - When I first saw the side slots, I didn't realize they were for acrylic removal. I though they were going to either be a metal bar OR could potentially be used for trackers (like the hex tracker tile for showing HP, spell slots etc.) Maybe the internals could be filled with numbers and there could be a slide able cover that reveals them to track progress. - Alternatively, the slot looks like it is could be the right size for a pen insert. So for storage, you could place your pen in the panel recession, then slide it into your carrying case - reducing a "need" for a pen slot in the bag. --- Faces --- - I agree with @Crackinjahcs on non veneered panels looking a bit like kitchen cabinet doors. Changing the angle on the recess may help that out. - I'm super excited at the idea of "master work" faces that could have art etched/printed on them. I think the Hex map and monster art would make awesome additions being permanently displayed. - Wyrmwood's veneer game is so top notch and impressive. With the aforementioned art comment ^^ I think it would be really cool if you had "dbrand like skins" of your veneers that could be adhered to panels by the customer. This could provide: lots of potential for different designs, a way to cover up any damage, potential future kickstarters focused on art or other updates that past purchasers wouldn't grumble about having to buy a V2 for some cosmetics. I hereby authorize Wyrmwood the use of any ideas, information, intellectual property, or other useful sentiment from this comment in the development and sale of the GM Screen product, or any other products in the future. Please contact me if you need anything more official than a disclaimer in a comment for legal use moving forward.
One area I haven't seen any development on is integrating this with the table in various ways. A DM screen attaching to the table (as I was originally imagining) might not be that useful/necessary, but there are still things that could be done. For example, having outside rail accessories that point /inwards/ for DMs. You could have something on the side of the table that provides storage, raised cupholders, or a dice tower on top of the side-rails. You could have something that allows you to use the DM screens to totally surround the end of the table (like having side-screens to the left and right, for people who need more privacy or more space. Just some ideas. I feel like there's more that can be done when thinking about the screen and table working together.
Thank you Johann
I love Bobby just casually pulling out a j-vault to feel the wood😂😂
I'm just stoked for this to become a thing
Wow…I mean wow…As a former Buyer/Purchaser/Procurement officer. If I handed over designs and the bag manufacturer doesn’t know how to read the design. If they are given a mock product out of cardboard WITH DIMENSIONS and then they STILL mess up the prototype bag, I’m sorry we’re done. Next bag manufacturer please. Lets see if the next one is more competent. I would never want a 3 pouch bag. I would always offer the 4 on purpose. Also side note: subconscious marketing - to motivate people to buy a 4th screen. If not - its great for your IPad or notes on letter/a4 paper. 4 slots always a must :P
Im glad you guys ended up using the rubber feet as the magnet bungs as well! Im sure im not the only one who suggested that.
I reeeeeally love the look of the adventuring party veneers! It just looks SO GOOD. For the chipping, that tends to be a process-dependent issue from my understanding. Too fast of a feedrate, leading to excessive force/torque at the bit, which then causes chips to get torn away from the rest of the veneer. Ergo, the pass's going through the veneer has to be done slower than the solid wood.
Thank you Johann! You are a beautiful person!
Loving these iterations... personally pumped for the "Druid" veneer - and have got to have a Corrupted Logo insert for that central panel
It’s come a long way and I’m excited to see the final product
F'in Johann...that boat is AMAZING! What a beautiful man!
An episode, that's just Johann talking about what things he makes, and showing us his boats!
Thank you Johann for being the smart fellow you are. Beautiful.
I am still team cabinetry panel design idea. It would be lighter weight and actually have different woods in it. You would also have less issues when it comes to the accessory and magnet installs because you would be messing up 1 piece of a frame instead of an entire panel. You gotta look at process loss and at what points in that process failures occur. If your high risk process is near the end of the production of an item that is risk I would want to avoid. Plus Jointing looks sexy on wood. I saw another comment on here about the bag and I agree that it either needs to be an all in one bag for any DM. or as minimal as possible so there is space for it with a DMs other stuff. Traveling DMs have alot to worry about when it comes to what to bring what not to bring. When I use to do it I had a lot of totes, bags, and a cart just to move it all in and out.
Johann's bag looks amazing and the idea of a hard bag/case would be pretty awesome
Danke Johann, das war gute Arbeit!
I think a waxed canvas bag, leather Wyrmwood logo, brass hardware (matching the existing hardware with logo), leather handle and strap would look amazing!
I really like having the handle briefcase style with the zipper on the side. With it being magnetically connected, as you pull one out it'll click into the next and you can slide the whole screen out like a flipping magician. I'm thinking accessory pockets on the outside because I'd get the headphone mount you showed for the last sit/stand desk video and hang the pouch for easy access but also storage for accessories to keep my game space clear.
Thanks!
This is looking goooood
I'm glad someone finally mentioned four panels. All we've seen are three panel designs, but I don't own any three panel GM screens they are all four panels and that's the space I've gotten used to having.
Really excited where all of this is going. I cant wait to see what we look like coming out of the alpha. I am curious beyond the bag what (if any) accessories will look like.
The design is growing on me, and the bag ideas are fantastic. However, I still miss having a dice tower that can go to dm side or player side. I could settle on other elements being different from your previous version, but I really want that. Other competitors have dice tower integration. You should as well IMO.

Well, they have the stand-alone dice towers, so its not hard to have one on the DM's side. Plus, having one integrated would feel clunky IMO. At least you can have matching wood types for the tower and the screen, THAT would look awesome.

lets go another GM Screen Episode

"Good from far, but far from good!" - Jason 2022 (need to remember that one)
I really love the thief design for the GM screen!!!! the design is really good!
Seems many people are interested in larger bags with more storage options. I personally like the current bag size because I think it could quickly become a weight issue and I would simply want a case for my super nice DM screen even if that means carrying something else or another trip to the car. What I think could be really cool is a leather or fabric dice roller that is part of the bag so its one less thing to worry about bringing and it really plays into the table top gaming origins of the bag. Also I could totally use this for classes, notebooks and books in the slots. But maybe its worth exploring a modular bag system where bags/cases of different sizes/uses could link together. For those that want a larger briefcase/duffle kind of setup for books or more pockets for dice and pens could loop into each other? Personally I dont think WW has much to gain getting into the briefcase/bag game there are thousands of good options out there, just slip this case into a larger one if you want to store everything in it.
Ok, that screen and bag are going to be amazing. I have zero doubt about that. But YO WHAT ABOUT THAT AWESOME NAUTILUS?!?!???
You win Doug, you win...i was steadfastly part of team Frame+Panel, but after seeing the Rouge and Wizard variations, with the option to add customization in the middle, im now sold. Saving up now to throw money at you guys. Also Johann is beautiful
Make the bag big enough to carry all the Wyrmwood gear including the tower, screen, etc. Or make it super minimal that way you can put it in another bag.
I love the cardboard version. You could use that extra space on top of the screens to hold minis and/or the initiative trackers.
The wood should be cnc’d out so the acrylic is flush when in place. I worry they will end up scratching the wood when in transit if they are held in place with magnets alone.
You should think about adding a strap on the bottom of the bag for grid drawing mats. I also love the idea of different classes for the wood combinations. I do like the thumb slots, but that textured shield is a much better way to remove the acrylic. Also to reiterate what someone else said, 5 slots in the bag is much better. 3 or 4 for DM screen, then the other can be used for manuals, laptops, notebooks, etc.
Great idea with the bag. Why is it that Jason always has these out of left field ideas that no one else ever thought about that don't just work, but make products? "Wait this doesn't have pockets? Add a pocket here for pens, that can slip in this way. Oh it should be turned this way for better access and easier to carry."
I wasn’t really on team veneer until I saw the wizard panels, but I also will probably not be able to afford a purpleheart option. I definitely agree with Jason that a more natural colored leather would go with the brass accents and I think nothing beats embroidered for the logo treatment. Also if you’re locked in on the shield badge personalizations, it would be real snazzy to have a way to display it on the bag itself, like a little window in the center so if you place your middle screen there, your badge will show through
Thank you for being beautiful Johann.
That color combo for the "Wizard" DM screen is 1000 times sexier to me than a mound of poutine is to Doug.
Maybe controversial take, but can you make the hole bigger for larger customizations? If you make it bigger, you might be able to use the excess for a cup holder as well. GM Screens need customization options (you all keep mentioning engravings), but what about color? Some of the dice trays you guys have made look sick. Have a few default options like colorful badass dragons, and I'll buy 3-4 center pieces with different centers.
Personally the white edge around the veneer looks cool to me it just adds a nice contrast to it. I also do agree that the finger dig outs in the panel also gives some nice contrast to it.
Yay! I love the idea of using rubbers in the bunghole just like I and a few others suggested last time. And I agree, probably not a good idea to try eating CrazyEd's bung.
Johann coming down on the bag people with the power of German engineering was lovely. Regarding the bag I agree with the side that said to keep it minimal. Why? If you're the GM and lugging around a solid wood screen you'll need a much bigger bag for the other stuff or a second bag or basket anyway. Which brings me back to my original issue with the overall design. I GM from home and have no need of a screen that comes apart. If I were to travel on the other hand, I would prefer a much lighter screen first and foremost.
I'm not a dm but a simple player, but it seems like a sleeve system is a lot more minimalist and allows for DMs to use whatever container or bag they normally use. It'll protect the screen and allow for DMs to use their own systems.
I'd love to have more options for the back of the screen. One with an inlaid magnetic whiteboard, for example, or a veneered over magnetic plate or bars. Things that would give more utility to the real estate than just "there're tables/notes mounted behind acrylic". Also would REALLY love to see the rotating frame brought back. That was one of the best innovative designs from GMS1. And it would be a lot easier to reengineer in a "landscape OR portrait" design instead of "both at once".
I love the bag idea
