Fiction Books that will improve your life more than any Self-Help Books

Fiction books are the best self-improvment books you can read! These are some of the books that have had the biggest impact on my life and I honestly think would help young men and women more than the usual ones suggested!

Seeing characters struggle and overcome challenge gives you more power and ability and motivation than any self help book ever could. At least IMO. I'm 19, and I think men and women my age are more attracted to fiction instead of non fiction anyway so its definitely the way to go.

I’m 21 and I feel the same way, this is more targeted to the self-improvement space where I see many young men getting stuck in the trap of reading and watching videos about bettering their life and it’s a form of mental masturbation which leads them to never actually improving the things they want to, I think fiction solves that paradox

As a manga reader I can't but cry a bit when people talk about Berserk. I have such an affectionate relationship with this manga and it change me deeply.

I think you've summed it up perfectly. Self-help books can be useful to an extent, advising you on steps to take and behaviours to change/adopt/abandon. However, actually being able to see the characters in these stories adapt and grow, trying to make these changes and seeing where they stumble and falter in the process is so much more motivational and impactful for me. Seeing Kaladin struggle with his situation, deciding to improve it, messing up his choices and then ultimately succeeding was so rewarding and inspiring! I think there's also a level of empathy that can be gained from fiction that self-help can miss. Self-help can be one size fits all, but if you tried telling the same information within to many of these fictional characters, it wouldn't necessarily stick, due to their varied pasts. When you take that and apply it to people in real life, you can see how there could be many reasons people are the way they are, and why improving their lives can be a real struggle when it might come naturally to others.

Based. I also want to emphasize reading widely. Read the classics, they are classics for a good reason. Read philosophy. Read poetry and even write some. I highly recommend Belisarius by Longfellow, it's impossible to read it and not be motivated. Use critical editions if needed (Norton, Oxford, etc.)

great recommendations Berserk happens to be one of my favorite pieces of fiction in general. one recommendation i have is a book called House Of Leaves. its messages are subtle but still apparent, more so at the end of the book. its not really fantasy, but more of an "unfiction" type book. its written in the perspective of a young man working to edit a transcript of footage called The Navidson Record. It is transcribed by a mysterious old man who passed away. Johnny, the young man, stole a trunk from him, and within were his transcripts of The Navidson Record. The Navidson Record is the primary focus of the book. It follows a struggling relationship between Karen Green and Will Navidson, along with their two children. It is a horror novel, and the most terrifying one ive read. genuinely lost sleep over it. Karen and Will bought a home together, hoping that it would repair their relationship, but inside they found something disturbing. Their house was, for a lack of a better word, alive. Im not gonna spoil a lot but their house is bigger on the inside. Its ever-changing and seems to have a will of its own. As for the message, its about life and love. All characters in this book are terribly human. They have flaws, they have their ups, and their downs. Its about learning to move past it. Learning to leave the past behind and moving forward. in addition to all this, theres further interpreting with how its written and the ambiguity of it all. I will refrain from giving the interpretations due to spoilers.

For me the urban fantasy series The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher will always be a favorite of mine. It starts as a quite cheesy series but evolves into an incredibly powerful story about family and friendship. Some of the best realized characters, relationships and dialogue in the genre. One of the core themes is to control yourself, and just because you have bad urges or feelings, it does not make you a bad person
