I'm currently reading Berserk like you for the first time. Just finished volume 9, I'm enjoying this story. I can't wait to read more of this. Great video, I agree with your points. Without spoiling it, volume 9 brings some things into place and some stuff happens. Can't wait for your next review!

I love that you're reading this and enjoying it so much, it's one of my favorites. Your criticisms of the uh "Donavan-ing" are super valid, and are my biggest problem with the series as well. It does get better as the series goes on, but be warned it is something that gets worse before it gets better.

@@TheJackedNerd. Just watch out for the whole Wyald arc, honestly it's skippable especially if that content is just not worth it for you. However, as disgusting as Wyald is, it makes it so satisfying when Guts prevails

I love it everytime Berserk offends modern audiences. Just shows you how far from understanding the dark reality of the real world people have fallen. True art fulfilling its ultimate purpose.

I clearly state that it’s not the events I have a problem with I’ve read plenty of stories with just as dark stuff or even darker it’s the art. I think most of the scenes had multiple completely unnecessary to the story porn shots. You can still have the event and not take me out of the story with those. I WANT to be immersed in the darkness of the world and that just ruins the vibe a bit because it feels indulgent and placed there for a different purpose

even Kentaru Miura said that he handled these scene's wrong and that he was gratuitous with in it his early days, and despite how much I almost worship this story, even I have to hide my eyes from the few "Loli's go "kyaa"" scenes... (did I REALLY have to see schierke's ass? was it really THAT necessary to the story?)

god this comment is so edgy. i love berserk to death but a blind man could see that at least in the early stages of the story, these scenes are depicted very poorly. "wow its offensive and thats good because muh dark reality" berserk isnt a 14 year old boys edgy diary lol it has moments like this that are handled with more horrific elements rather than coming from a doujin

10:29 about " only one man can do that ". Man, there is like a thousand men can do it in Berserk. Even that whale general who was weak af compare to Guts can cut a man in half. Beside, there were already rumors about assassins from Kushan, there is no way someone suspected Guts

Dude just stay ready. Avoid spoilers. Because this shit what is about to happen is something that you can see only in berserk. And yeah. Best manga ever. Don't anyone try to Chang my mind because I've read it 3 times already 🗿

Your criticisms of the art in the Donovan scenes is completely valid. I think there are two main reasons why they're presented the way they are, firstly I think it's simply a sign of the times. Berserk is an older story so it caters to a different audience from a different time. Secondly, the magazine it was published in was called Animal House (later Young Animal) which was kinda trashy by modern standards, featuring some graphic manga that wouldn't be suitable for other magazines as well as photos of models in bikinis. As such there were certain expectations when it came to nudity and how it was depicted. None of this is to justify how its presented, but I think it's important context. It's easy to look back at the series as a whole and pick apart issues like this, but at the time Miura had no idea how big his series would become and like any other working professional had to meet the expectations of his publishers or risk being cut - and then we'd have no Berserk. For me personally, having that extra context allows me to look beyond the presentation and read those scenes from a more realistic perspective. And thankfully Miura tends to write these scenes more maturely than he illustrates them, so if you can look past the art you won't be disappointed by the writing, plot and character development presented in the fallout of those scenes.

I got the this is satire video kind of vibe but then I just couldnt continue listening after Bowso. As one of those who take Berserk to heart.

I read Berserk several years ago and It's nice hearing some analysis and criticism on it. I hadn't taken any advanced English classes at that point so when I reread I'd love to do more analysis on my own. I definitely agree with your idea on some of the more gross/inappropriate panels. I was a lot younger of a reader and I had to take a break whenever I read some of those parts and looking back I don't feel that they were there to emphasize or make the themes stronger. Good news is that there is much less of that especially as you progress towards the latter part of what has been written/drawn. I would like to be able to draw parallels between some of the worst that was there and some of the best but I feel that those would fall into the more mild plot points.

I completely agree with your criticism on the indulgence of some panels. As a woman reader I always knew what those panels were supposed to represent. And that is mostly not a warning against a dark theme, but as you said, focus on the nudity part. For that reason I didn't really want to continue reading it, since I felt uncomfortable anytime a woman character appeared, expecting the worst. But the story is still among my favorites, and I want to see the progress. Hopefully things will get better in that area, but even if not, there's still Guts willing to kick some a**. Really great review, keep them coming!

@@TheJackedNerd. so what you have to do is first to watch the first season of the anime and then take it from where you have left reading through the manga because the second season is exactly not the best at all , and there is some Reddit comments that tell you exactly Which chapter of the manga you should start right away after you have finished watching the first season

Hey bro, glad you are reading berserk, its a great story, definitely not for the faint of heart. Im going to give some history so the graphic panels make more sense, firstly this story was written for young adult men, its supposed to be graphic, distubing, and have nudity. Berserk was published in a seinen magazine called Monthly Animal House, and now Young Animal, its consists of different adult themed manga chapters, with a back cover of big chested women. Its the culture, and it will continue to be that way, as manga is not exactly stricken by the West's "modern woke progressivism". Its a good thing, modern comic books are lame by comparison. My opinion is that every art panel/nude panel serves a purpose in the grand scheme of the overall story. The story shows you the worst of humanity and all these nasty parts of life. Me personally I was fine with the amount of nudity, Miura took the time to draw it and he felt it was necessary to include in the story, who am i to judge this masterpeice of a story :)
