FABRICATING A WELDING TABLE | TRENT'S GARAGE

I am desperately in need of a welding table, a work bench... Somewhere that I can work on projects and it needs to be strong, sturdy, and made out of steel!!!
Come along today and enjoy watching me fabricate this table from the ground up. It's been a while since I did a lot of welding but I'm ready to get back in the groove.
Thanks for watching and don't forget to subscribe.

You should have put some locking casters on your table so that you can move it around more easily. You probably would want to move it out to the center of the stall to use it.

Perfect time for reflection... Take a deep breath...everyone can use a litte advice and suggestions, the good thing about them both is you can take them or leave them, meaning not use them. And if I know Trent and Brandon, they more than likely have something better planned for the uses they will apply this table for but sure they appreciate all ideas...you never know when someones will be of help.

Trent, you remind me of my brother-in-law. Jack of all trades. If he doesn’t know how, he figures it out with books or you tube. He became a pilot of a helicopter, bought an older 60’ish helicopter, used it to get his hours. Turned around an sold it. So it really only cost the gas and time. He then got a promotion at work (LE) became the top man that gave final tests throughout the state for others that flew for our department. He just has a mind like yours. Love your family and Brandon 😊👍

Locking and unlocking casters each time you move a heavy duty work table is unreliable. I would much rather have it right where Trent has his: with a wall backing. Space to maneuver for clamping is easy enough because he can slide the table out a few feet without difficulty. Stability is an absolute on a heavy metal table that will be used for welding often times large, awkward objects.

I built one of those about 25 years ago. I started with 3/4" x4'x8' steel plate. Used 3"x3" x 1/4" square tubing for the legs and structure. I cut off 10" off the 8' side folded it up 90 degrees and welded it to the table as a backsplash. I then welded some 1"x1" square tube to the backsplash and bolted a 3/4" piece of plywood. Painted the plywood white to do a shadow board and painted the whole table gray except the top face. Bolted down a big vise to the left side. Then a two stone grinder on the right. Then mounted two switches one for the lights and the other for the grinder and two plug receptacle. Then welded on some heavy duty steel casters on to make it easier to move. It has stood up great and is like new after 25 years of fabricating.

Trent - Aside from what you've said, the fact that it sits flat, is great. As well, I built a worktable similar about 30 years ago, and I might wipe it down with an oily rag every 5 years, and still, no rust. As well, a hint to the wise, take a grinder and round off those sharp corners on the top plate. Your hips, and Leo's head, will probably thank you for that.

Flap discs never used to be a thing years back but that seems to be one of the popular items used for years now to clean up mill scale on hot rolled steel without removing or gouging into the metal as much as a typical grinding wheel would do. As soon as I saw you pull out the rag I was going no no no in my head LOL,. first mechanically remove the mill scale, then use the acetone if you really feel the need and I think in most cases with thicker steel that is not a requirement, definitely a different story with aluminum as that is a whole other beast. Oh and using a wire wheel on an angle grinder to clean mill scale, that typically will not take it off, you think you have but its still there to some degree. What is nice is to have multiple angle grinders when one is using a combination of a grinding wheel, flap disc, cut off wheel and rather than change out constantly between wheels for each phase of a project, they are all ready to go. That is the drawback of mig, it hates mill scale where as depending on the rod doing stick welding, one can get away with less prep. Of course everything else is a negative with stick as per having to deal with slag removal, slag inclusions if the technique is not correct ... mig sure shines then !. Great job on the welding table though ( aside from the cleaning learning curve you experienced without me having to babble all of this ). With that table depending on your plans, chances are you will probably want to mount on a vice and incorporate the underside stiffeners as was suggested to beef up the table top stiffness at that time. Nice project you can be proud of and will get lots of use I am sure !

Get some, throw them down in the bed of the truck before the forklift drops a sheet in. It will let you slide out the sheets easier. Also - hair out of square is okay as long as it's functional for your needs.

Welding is no joke. When I was young, I worked for Brandon & Turnage Race Cars. Among other things, we balanced engines. When DOING this we had to use a TIG welder. Since the welds were, sometimes, close to bearing surfaces, it was important to be careful where to touch the welding wire. One HAS to use a super-dark welding hood. One time I had a very difficult place to weld in and started the welding wire, THEN flipped the hood down. Woke up in the middle of the night with my eyes on fire. Like hot ground glass was in them. I had flash-burned my eyes. The hospital said that I also had some damage to my retinas.

If you no what steel weights by the square foot it’s easy to figure out!! It’s about 480lbs to 500lbs for a 4’x8’ sheet 3/8” thick!! I always do a +&- of 10lbs to be safe!!! I had half of a flat bed truck and that Is what I am making my fab table out of for my shop!! It was free and I definitely needed a metal Fab table with a bench vise on it also!!!

Yay! Brandon makes his Trent’s garage debut! Awwww!!! I love seeing Frank and Lika playing too! I am a devout Trent and Allie follower from back when you guys were on your South American tour. While I’m not super into the car stuff I am happy to support you guys and enjoy learning new things. :)

Thank you for letting us see such an exciting project, most people buy a welding table but here it is built by themselves. Thanks for that. Greetings from Germany

I’m really excited about this channel. I hope you stick with it even after all the folks who have subbed that have zero interest end up ignoring these videos. As a fellow off-road enthusiast, I can’t wait to see where this all goes!

@@Trents.garage Lol! There are women in their 70's watching Trent and Brandon and enjoy it, I feel because they know him and Brandon as husbands, fathers, sons, brothers and grandsons. It's their bubbly personalities, Brandon is finally getting over his camera shyness, very well, I might add and doing a great job just being himself! We're here for the families, watching a rock crawler get built is icing on the cake!!😄😉😃😊 Anyways, if how many words help out with algorithms, there you go friends!🤷🙋 Have a great week!! Hugs for Allie and Leo!!
