I played this when I was 17-18 years old. I became so good at it I could complete all the tracks in the game, both front and backwards, and any other variations consistently and always come in first. I used a bike called "surge" I think it was, that was one of the slower bikes, but had a very fast acceleration. I'm old now and there is no way I'd ever get that good again if I played this now. It shall have to live in my memory as "that one game I got really good at."

I remember borrowing this game from my friend back in elementary school and I remember loving it probably because I was so use to Mario Kart 64 that I wanted to try something different in a racing genre. However many years later when I actually revisited the game I realize this game has so many issues with it and probably the one that annoyed me the most is what you also highlighted in your video which was the immense frame lag that the game suffers in single player mode against computer opponents. Overrall its still one of my favorite from my childhood, but Its definitely without a doubt NO F-zero lol. Great video, I really enjoyed your review and it actually made me want to play this game again.

Nice to see another review up. I was starting to worry. As a kid I was very much in love with this game, but after having played XG1, this game seems like a step back in terms of frame rate, track design and vehicle controlability. I always thought this game worked with the expansion pak, but this doesn't appear to be the case, even though this could have been used to make the game run much smoother with all the dynamic lighting effects. For now, XG1 is my personal gavourite, although I'm not familiar with XG3 on the Gamecube.

This was my personal favourite in the series and I played it solidly until the release of that star wars game. It's a game that took a while to get the hang of (a weekend would not cut it) but it did have many technical flaws, chiefly not being able to see where you were going, couple this with multiple track routes and you had a major problem. It also had one of the best weapons system in any future racer, you could pick one of the heavy armed bikes and just kill all the competition before finishing off the race, no game like this have I play were you had this kind of choice in how you play. A great game it's a real shame that many never got into it, it had a high bar in terms of gameplay, with no real explanation or tutorial of how to get there along with technical issues.

This game was so ambitious that I forgave it the frame rate - just enjoyed it fully. Avoided combat mode, played mostly single, and especially loved driving around on my own and enjoying smooth motion. But FPS bothered me not during races, and even combat mode is fine as well. This game just oozed style and content all over the place! And to tell the truth - dealing with frantic speeds and chaotic aggressive competition - slowdowns are kinda appreciated, to catch some breath and decide what to do next! Love Wipeout 64 and F-Zero X a lot, but this game had most of my time and focus, I guess. It tried to go quite some extra miles in comparison, so falling apart here and there is really ok for me. Flawed masterpiece, great underdog to discover!

I love this game, it's much better than the first one. The tracks are much wider, not as narrow as in the first game and they look much prettier too. The combat is hard to master, you just can't rely on your weapons that much, whereas Mario Kart lives from weapon usage and rubber banding. All in all a worthy succesor to XG1 in my opinion...

2 was my favourite, and the one I owned. There's a third installment as well, but looking at videos it seems totally different and not very interesting. Like with how Rollcage was spiritually succeeded by Grip, I wish someone would give this game the reboot treatment. It really is hampered by the technology of the time, and it could do with some longer sight-lines and a high frame-rate. There's just something so aesthetic about the weapon pods actually coming to you from off-screen to follow along above your bike, unfolding to reveal their arsenal of munitions. You can imagine them redesigned with thrusters like on those Exoatmospheric Kill Vehicles. They could be grabbed by arms that would extend from the motorcycle, then when expended they would detach and fly off. So many cool things could be done with the series today. It makes me wish I knew how to program.

The reviews of the PC version pushed me to go with emulating the N64 version instead. Played a track and was immediately put off by the framerate. So what I did about that was tweak a couple settings and got the game running at a pretty solid 30 fps with rare, tiny dips. It's actually a really fun title once you get the hang of the tracks and the feel of your vehicle (The slide is so necessary). The physics can be wonky sometimes, causing much frustration, which can be mitigated by using a save state before the race starts and loading that state when something screwy happens, like getting turned around for no apparent reason (Annoying). I honestly don't know how you could have a great time playing this game without a solid framerate and saving before the next race begins. The AI can be brutal on some of these tracks and so can the tracks themselves. You really need every frame you can get. F-Zero X runs at a consistent 60 fps. Just half of that shouldn't be too much to ask for in an intense racer such as this. Well I'm glad I got to experience it the way it should. I'll definitely be playing more of it later. It's kept my interest longer than expected. Didn't care much for the first game, but this one I like. F-Zero X is still waaay better.

I'm a diehard XG fan but, tbh, it took quite a while for me to warm up to XG2. It took months to beat this game completely when XG never took long at all. XG2 was my least favorite out of them all. I never understood why the developers took a step back with this one. The only saving grace was the OST. At any rate, to this day, XG will always be my favorite racing game series of all.

  • @DriftTaxi

It may be because I played XG2 first, but I have to disagree with you (but I still love you). This game blew me away at the time and still holds up, in my opinion, quite well with an N64 hooked up to a projector and 1000w sound system. It's hilarious fun to me and I smile from start to finish. I do, however, agree with you that you should just focus on the racing and I felt the combat was more of an afterthought than something the developers focused on. To me, it shouldn't be a combat oriented game. There should have been a combat MODE and for the championship, just focus on trying to get the fastest lap. That's all I did and that helps to really reel in those 1st place finishes.

I enjoyed this more than the 1st. Yet initially i thought i'd picked up a stinker of a game. It's not until you've spent several hours playing, and gotten used to the controls that you start to realize just how good this game is. It's a challenge...... and i felt Probe were deliberately asking players to rise to that challenge. If you're a player who's always quick to start blaming a games controls, whenever you finish last. Instead of reconfiguring your brain to compensate for a tricky situation, then you should stay well clear of EG2. On the plus side, having such tricky tracks means that once you've completed the game and earned yourself "mirror-mode"..... if you then leave it several months before trying out mirror-mode, it'll seem as if you have 12 brand new tracks at your disposal. I remember feeling gratified that Probe had asked me to extend my playing skills for this racer. It's a rare event when a developer risks alienating most players(and risks sales in the process) through an extended difficulty curve which a lot of players may find esoterically annoying. Definitely a N64 top 100 title.

XG2 is an inferior attempt at copying Extreme G in slow motion, I've been playing Extreme G with no AA and de blur recently, it looks stunning, the roller coaster tracks are intense, it's sharp and runs like a rocket. This horrible mess - I don't know what Probe were thinking, it's almost as if they took the best parts of XG and binned them - the track designs are rubbish, the control is worse, bikes look worse - all for what? Fancy lighting that detail in unseen areas. Seriously I think the only enhancement is the presentation and menus. If you never played Extreme G I'd say you'll still enjoy this game.

I didn’t really care for XG2 at all. The frame rate was a mess, the bikes seemed smaller, it just overall seemed like a downgrade to me

OK, I'm glad it wasn't just me then. I thought maybe I should give this game a try again, but when you mentioned the poor track design, I remembered why I didn't like this game that much--90 degree turns popping up out of nowhere, for instance. Ugh.

I liked EG2, but i do agree on the frame rate issue, if you so much as dared to use the flame thrower booster, you were left with a slide show of the game. But i overcame all of that and beat the game! The bikes that were unlocked were way better and more capable for the game.....except the fastest bike, that one was way to fast!

This is the best one but it was flawed, it was too much for the system to handle, it had an incredibly deep control system that I only understood long after I completed it, you could pull back on the control stick which would change your turning trajectory, which was the logic behind the random later levels, sadly the games blurry visuals and short draw distance, plus the fact that it's key steering feature was poorly explained, meant that it did manage to live up to its full potential. The 3rd fixed the visual problems but got rid of the cool controls and the 4th one was just slow and shit.

Spoken like a true xg fan, but u r right on all accounts. I loved the first game, second one was better but was helped back by a few flaws and the rest was garbage

The first one was the best to me, the sudden turn around killed it for me, so i didnt bother to try and get the hang of it.

The biggest fault of the game is the tight tracks and I find the colour palette blends in the tracks with the backgrounds making it difficult to know where your actually going. Not a bad game but not the best. I do love this game on original Xbox.

I wasn't a big fan of the first Extreme G so I didn't bother with this one. I'm more interested in trying the gamecube games, which I hear are pretty good.

I remember preferring this game over this original mostly because you could choose to destroy the competition rather than necessarily racing them. In XG1, reducing an opponent's shields made it so that subsequent hits would slow him down more, but you could never "kill" him. In XG2 you get the pleasure of seeing his bike start spewing black smoke and then detonate against the next wall.

With a longer draw distance this game could have been epic but, sadly, as it was it was only worth renting a few times.

The tracks prob aren't the problem, it's the bad pop-up/draw distance

XG3 all the way. On XG2, there is way too many variations/routes of the same tracks, making it impossible to remember all turns every time, -hence reverse driving. Wipeout Fusion also had this problem on certain extent. XG2 has exelent style and would be must have with less, (more solid) tracks and just drop weapons out, as EU -version is jerky. Thankfully, there are so many cheats available to adjust game to fit everyones taste.
