I totally loved this game! My mom bought its for me When I was 10; I didn’t speak English at the time and it took me a year to open the bridge in the firs level. Alongside ocarina of time, this game was one of my greatest motivators to learn English. Oh boy, it surely has a special place in my heart.

I have a similar story. My dad purchased it for us when we lived in Mexico and it took us for ever to pass the first level. My siblings and I tried everyday. We erupted in cheer when we finally pass it. Fond childhood memories.

I brought this unboxed from a trade in shop so didn't have a clue what it was about or anything. Such a great surprise when I loaded it up 😁 Loved this game 🤗

What I wouldn't give for them to remake this game. I love this game for various reasons. The amount of vehicles is the most obvious one; era-accurate cars, bikes, planes, military vehicles, boats, you name it. I loved the different tanks, bombers, helicopters, attack boats, hover crafts, and all the neat vehicles they put in the game. You could just get into any vehicle, and drive around blasting aliens. I loved it. I also enjoyed the massive free roam worlds in the different time periods and places. Each era and location was really cool to explore with fun secrets and buildings. The alien class system was genius; every one had a purpose. You had everything from the weak little drones and fleas, to the flying scout aliens, the big walking praying mantis looking guys that shot laser out of their wangs, the Goliaths that would knock down buildings to expose humans for the giant harvester that would send out green blobs to collect them, you had mortar-launching fish aliens, aliens in turrets that would guard key areas... shit now that I think about it, there were probably as many aliens as there were vehicles in the game. Oh and I shit my pants the first time I got the message telling me that I fucked up and let too many humans be harvested, and that a mutant was on the way. Each mutant for every time era was unique and different and scary as shit, I loved it. I also really enjoyed how you progressed through the game levels, where you would have to tackle one area at a time by killing unique boss aliens, with a big old challenging battle at the end where you would first take on the alien army, and then the final boss in your special crazy hover-tank thing. If I could have it my way, I would want a new gen version of this game with (obviously) better graphics, better gameplay mechanics/controls, with more vehicles, guns, alien classes, a better save point system, different eras and locations. To me, every moment of the game was memorable and challenging at the same time. Basically I would want the same game, but bigger, better, and of course modernized. They nailed the concept and story for this game, it's just too bad it wasn't as pretty and polished as some other games out there at the time. Sorry bout the rant I get excited

This game basically set the standard for me as to what i wanted in a game. Open world, weapon and ammo upgrades, land, sea and air vehicles. Amazing theme music. Ect. Body Harvest was by far the best N64 game to exist.

This game is more than a hidden gem, I was scared to death of this game and I would play again. I need to find my copy....

yeah :) i remembered that i collected all alien artifacts and crystals and sometimes you recived alien weaponary like ur pistol became a laser pistol or ur rifle became a 255mm howitzer where u could lunch urself to the boss area if u drove backwords correctly :D

AN ABSOLUTE MASTERPIECE, i remember waiting to go to my dad house house just so i could play this GEM of a game and show my old man my Mad Skills in killing the aliens!!!!! it needs a remastered remake for sure !!!

Body Harvest will forever remain as the greatest underrated N64 game of all time. I was 8 when I first played it, and it literally scared the hell out of me! I would give anything if Rockstar were to remake this overlooked masterpiece. *Plus* I think the idea of playing through in order to save is one of the most genius ways to get players to drive through the entire game. It doesn’t allow the player to be lazy and just save whenever. It’s like you have to earn to save your progress, and IF they ever remake this game, they should keep that mechanic.

Body Harvest was amazing. People think GTA3 was revolutionary? This was Forbidden Planet to GTA3's Star Trek.

One day soon.. btw is the Unreal Engine hard to work with? I was planning on unity but I felt Unreal could give us better fluid graphics. And this is all about graphics anyway, we got the awesome story and mechanics already, its only a matter of remaking those

Great review! This was a game I found for 20 dollars hidden away at Walmart back in the day. I had low expectations since I'd never heard of it before. Damn was this game good. I even got a tattoo from it. Awesome memories.

+N64 Glenn Plant If you're thinking of what to review next I would recommend Tony Hawks Pro Skater 3. It was actually the last game ever released on the N64. I personally love this game because the cheats and unlockables give it amazing replay value. If you do this game talk about moon physics cheat and disco mode cheat.

No matter how difficult this game was, I always kept coming back. Such an amazing game. Very underrated!

Body Harvest was an epic muther fkn game for the N64. Every couple of years I take my N64 out of the closet and relive this classic. Great review. The story and gameplay are fun but as mentioned it is the music that blows you away. Just amazing.

One of the devs of this game is now my tutor. He was largely responsible for the intro cinematics and throughout the game. The intro he did in just 5 days, so you're mentioning all these design issues there was also timing issues too. When push came to shove, the audio team messed up. My tutor made his cinematic fps, whilst audio worked on the total length in seconds of the file they were submitted. Which when added to the video slowed it down, as they should've expected. Hence the sync issues, and it was decided "Fuck it, just ship it out" due to the deadline being so close.

It is a shame that Rockstar have never returned to the game for a remake/sequel. They've brought back stuff like Max Payne and set games in different periods of time before, Red Dead, LA Noire. So why not this? Also, have you noticed that Grand Theft Auto has never appeared on a home Nintendo console? handhelds, yes. But none of the main games on the home systems! But I never bought it, the sci-fi stuff was boring me by that time, and by the time I did play it, the visuals were so bluury it put me off. Also, it's quite a bit like Hunter on the Amiga!

***** a scifi gta is effectively "body harvest." rockstar said they wont make a scifi gta because they have no reason, rebooting body harvest (or creating a new ip inspired by it since they probably cant get rights away from nintedo) would be a reason.

A random article in my news feed about this game brought me here. The article caught my attention, particularly because I've been searching for this game quite literally my entire life, but I remember so little about it that my vague search terms didn't yield any results. Happy to finally have found this after many years.

A childhood favorite that I've always loved despite its many flaws. The atmosphere and the multitude of vehicles are fantastic. I just feel like there's so much potential in it.

I rented for a few days this gamewhen I was a child and I looked for it a lot in the next years, playing it was amazing! the amount of secrets, the side stories you get to know reading books and talking to people in every house you walk in are amazing! and the strange sad feel the game has makes you really immerse in that reality, it's similar to Lovecraft but with a sci fi twist!

One of the single most DEPRESSING games in the history of planet earth... if you want to feel pure depression deeper than anything you have ever felt in your life play this game.

One of my favorite N64 games. A very cinematic sci-fi experience. Loved all the different vehicles and the time travel aspect of it. I remember I was really into killing giant bugs at that time of my youth because Starship Troopers came out around then too. The only good bug is a dead bug.

N64 Glenn Plant wrong.... what about starcraft the Brood Wars campaing with the Terrans UED (United Earth Directorate) was clearly an omage to starship troopers

Rented it from blockbuster as a teen and was hooked from the start. Still to this day it brings emotions that I have not felt in almost 30 years

I'm 30 years old in 2019. This game was my favorite when I was 12. The game was absolutely enthralling.

Loved it as a kid but I was never able to finish it. 7/8 years ago I hooked up the N64 again and tried to complete it after all those years, only to realize that the final world is only available in hard mode. I decided that I would give hard mode a try in the future, but forgot about it until I saw your video. I know what I'll be doing tonight!

Body Harvest plays a lot on the curiosity of the player. The vast, unexplored areas that are seen at the beginning of each section deliver a unique excitement as you begin to unfurl the maps, with a worthy payoff in the surreal encounters and heated combat packed in this game (seriously what's with when you press A next to a skeleton - he bends down, giggles and pilfers the bones). He will run like he has the tightest wedgie a man has ever faced, but given the importance of exploration in games, it is hard not to like this once it has been given the time of day. Also the music. The cartridge is worth it's weight just for the music

Man I used to get so immersed in this game as a kid omg. I always rented it tho and never really progressed in the game lol. Anyhow, it is so awesome you review these amazing N64 games. I'm so glad I came across your channel, your info and cohesive commentary is very engaging.

Remake time hopefully one day

I was maybe 11yrs old and I went to my local video rental store. I saw the awesomeness that was the box cover for the game. I brought it home and proceeded to enjoy the awesomeness of the game. That following holiday period I asked my mom for it's awesomeness and received it that Christmas. It was awesome.

I remember seeing screenshots for this in a friends N64 Magazine and thinking it looked amazing, but never in a million years would it be stocked in New Zealand, because Sony ruled the console world here and any Nintendo games were lucky to get a small bit of display shelf, but I can't remember quite how, but it must have been in a 2nd hand bin or something I one day saw the game, and of course snapped it up! I must've been 13 at the time. Boy oh boy was this game ahead of it's time, and thinking back to it now, it really was like GTA mixed with Halo mixed with Battlefield 1942.... a truly epic undertaking, especially for that era. I don't think this game gets nearly as much credit as it deserves

yeah I always remember people writing into n64 magazine from aus/new Zealand and they would get the magazine about 5 weeks later than it came out here because of shipping etc so theyd always complain about being out of date!

I picked this up as a kid with my allowance at a local drug store in the bargain bin lol, had no idea what it was. Bought it just cause I wanted more games, turned out to be an awesome game and even though I had no Idea what to do, I still distinctively remember the ominous atmosphere and soundtrack. I didn't realize it back then but this game was way ahead of its time.

I remember playing it together with my brother way back in the day. Our parents bought it for us, I think. Not sure, maybe we bought it ourselves because it was a lot cheaper than first party titles. The box art is a good seller :) We played it a lot, but never were able to get very far in the game. After 6 or 7 years of not touching the game, I tried again. But couldn't get past the last Java level, if I remember correctly. A while back, after many many years, I bought an N64 to be able to play some of the games that I have fond memories of. Clay fighter, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Mario64 etc. But also Body Harvest. Unfortunately we sold the N64 and all games years ago, or they got lost or something. So I bought Body Harvest without box for 5 Euro's somewhere. Played it again, but couldn't get past Java once again. So I never got around to finishing the game. It's so freaking difficult! I'm not that great at harder games :P But I wanna hook my N64 up again, one of these days. And try to beat Body Harvest. The concept and gameplay of this game is so cool! I just can't give up on that. Killer aliens in a GTA style open world, who wouldn't want that! Would be so awesome if this game would get a remake for current gen. But I guess Body Harvest isn't popular enough to justify that.

I found this in a bargain bin, but i enjoyed it for all the same reasons you mentioned. It was awkward, but overall fun. I had never played a Grand Theft Auto before, so that was why i really loved the vehicle system as something brand new. But it was still just really fun! I thought it was maybe a rip-off of Metroid, or perhaps it was originally supposed to be a Metroid game but they had to change it (orange space suit). That made me want to play it all the more imagining it was Samus killing these aliens, going through time on Earth, which is not really that far outside of the scope of Metroid.

I do see hints of this having been designed as a Metroid-styled game in 3D, and honestly, I'd pick this over what Retro Studios DID give us with Metroid Prime. I know a lot of people like that game, but I'm not so easily fooled. The graphics do look good in that game, but that's just to distract the player from the presentation overall, which when compared to other Metroid titles, is not very good. People have made comparisons between Prime 1 and Super Metroid, but I don't see it. Do they have similarities between each other? Yes, but they also have massive differences, graphical styles aside. The gameplay doesn't feel the same at all, the story isn't interesting, especially since you had to put the pieces of it together through hunting for the lore, lack of character, even Samus bored me, and the first person perspective just felt so out of place, I couldn't consider it a Metroid game anymore. I saw the reviews, then played the game... and I was sorely disappointed. FPS style games are good, but with Metroid, it just doesn't work. Then again, Shigeru Miyamoto is responsible for that atrocity anyway. So in reality, Super Metroid and Metroid Prime 1 have similarities, but their differences are far bigger, which really makes the Prime series feel, again, out of place with the other games.

I played this game so much on N64. I always got stuck in Siberia. I didn't know what to do. Then I finally found that I was suppose to fly a SCUD missile and blow up a place. (I think it was called that, I haven't played in decades lol). When you realize you can fly, swim, drive, boat, etc. in this game and in GTA you could not? this game was way ahead of its time. I found this on sale for $9.99 at toys R us. I needed my parents permission from staff to buy it lol.(When ESRB was taken seriously). Later, I would be walking around in GameStop and I saw a box art called Grand Theft Auto III. I thought it was going to be like Grand Turismo III because it had a car in the back of it. It was also on sale for $9.99. I bought it put that in the PS2 and was blown away lol. Later in San Andreas, they had a mission called Body Harvest, where you get into a harvester and have to kill people by running over them. Turning them into mush. THIS WAS SOMETHING that you could do in BODY HARVEST!!! IN SIBERIA!!! There were Zombies (or humans if you wanted to) that you could run over with a harvester!!! THAT WAS WHEN I REALIZED GTA and BODY HARVEST were made by the same company!!

Great tribute to this gem, Glenn. Some of the most memorable aspects of Body Harvest was the eerie piano music, freedom to drive an array of vehicles and shoot larger than life creatures. The killer for me was the inability to reduce the population meter and excessively distant save points -- if they fine tuned these, it could've been a game I'd play back regularly like, say, Goemon series, WinBack (another one I'd like to hear your thoughts on) and the Nintendo classics.

I love this game so much

I freakin love body harvest. I first played this game when I was six in late 2002. I could remember the goose bumps I feel in the night when the music of the title would play. I would play for hours shooting bugs and exploring the world. Then my mom sold it. It took me years to remember the name of this game, but when I finally remembered I immediately went on eBay and bought it automatically. Thanks for reviewing this game. I wish this game would get a little more attention.

Fantastic review! Really summed up this almost forgotten gem of my childhood! It was always this and Jet Force Gemini were stuck in my N64. My mom bought it (Body Harvest) for me used at Blockbuster Video; when these were still relevant things to mention. I was a bit young to fully grasp the direction the game was trying to steer me in, but I remember being content for a few years just meandering around the initial levels, picking up cars and people, slowly figuring out what it was I was even supposed to be doing. It was very much akin to picking up an action figure for me, in that I created my own little ridiculous world and story, without even caring about the predestined objectives before me. Perhaps I'll find a copy and see if I can recapture this long lost wanderlust. Thanks for the rekindling of fond memories and the very informative write up you did, I very much am in favor with the title of "Hidden Gem" being placed on this cult classic.

There is a pretty vast modding community for the N64 so you can probably find a patched version to run on a flash cart such as 64drive or everdrive 64.

I know, its an old comment, but i was lucky enough to got this game as the first game for my first t.v. type of gaming. I did not know much about gaming back than but gameboys so i did not have much to compare it wiht,.

Your channel is a godsend since I just got an everdrive x7 and am unfamiliar with the vast majority of n64 titles, since I barely bought any back years ago when I bought the console. I’m gonna try this one out tonight. Thanks, mate, for the recommendation

I asked for this game as an Xmas present. Christmas morning came and went, no sign and forgot I even wanted it. Two weeks later when we took down the tree I found under a carpet or something. Double Christmas! What a great game too. Eerie atmosphere outside of battle and I loved the aliens, but I was too young to not find the puzzles frustrating. A remake would be incredible on one of the new console

Walked into Walmart one day with my Dad and I remember seeing a mountain of these for cheap $20. Bought one not knowing much and instantly fell in love with it. Clearly one of the best on N64. Love the ost.

Man the memories, I use to play this everyday back when I was a child.

for me body harvest was a true gem to me in the aircraft and military vehicles inspired me to read about them and compare actual vehicles used it shows the technology advancing as the aliens do and it is addictive too addictive to me it was challenging and fun its number 3 on my list followed by goldeneye then perfect dark so in all body harvest should get credit and award for trying there best at such a masterpeice

I played that Game for months when i was around 9-10 years old. It had a such intense atmosphere that not just me, most of my friends just watched or wanted to play it. It was far away the best n64 game.

I bought this game 10 Canadian dollars. Never heard of it, now after this review, I'm excited to try it out.

To me Body Harvest truly defines what a retro game could be, and to this day holds a certain charm.... to say the least when I prefer a minimal aproach to visuals and a greater emphasis on (intense action) gameplay, this game comes to mind.... my one regret is that I just did not play this game enough when it launched...primarily because I was consumed by the many multiplayer games on the N64....but over time I have definitely grown to appreciate this game.

I remember playing this game. Had a lot of fun and loved the variety of vehicles available to use. One of those games that really stood out at the time.

Rockstar should bring this back since Cyberpunk failed to fill that Sci-Fi open world void. Red Dead is pretty much GTA with cowboy so this could be GTA with aliens. Plus if they bring back the time travel gimmick they could add Easter eggs from both GTA and Red Dead.

There’s a few body harvest Easter eggs in GTA games so why not hey!

Omfg, this has to be one of the best N64 gems ever. Definitely needs a remake.

I love this game as a kid. Except the Siberia mission with the scud missile that section felt impossible back then.

I love this game! I picked it up randomly as a rental when I was 15 years old and fell in love with it. By the time I was 18 found a used copy of it in a game store for a very affordable price, and I have owned it since. I personally feel like this is one of the hidden gems for the N64. I was so glad to see you review this; as no one ever talks about this game despite its innovation and depth. I also had no idea it had such a convoluted development history. Great review, keep them coming!

ImperatorScab yeah there aren't many hidden gems with the n64 as much of the game database is known for being good or average.

The marriage of GTA & Body Harvest gave us GTA III, along with the modern games in the series.

You made some mistakes: the alien comet level is set in 2016, not 2046, and the quest to run over zombies with a combine harvester is in Siberia, not America.

Body Harvest is one of my all time fav. 64 titles, recently ran through it again a month back as I never finished it as a kid, great memories here. Thank you very much for this review!

I do remember this game very well. Played it for hours as I'm a SciFi man through and through. It was a lot of fun. The game mechanics were way ahead of its time. Great controls and huge open worlds to roam around. The graphics and blurry look were the only letdown really. I would love to see a modern day remake! Great review by the way.

I have wonderful memories of this game from the N64 days, it was always a game that I wished would get a next gen remake. Some people would say it has, GTA. After i'd played Zelda OOT to death I was looking for a new game, i'd got this and Turok 2 for Christmas. I started playing Turok 2 but got lost and basically gave up, so I stated playing Body Harvest. Lets be clear this game looked ugly in 1998!! The game itself actually crashed on me at least 5 times. In order to complete the game you have to play on Hero difficulty (PAL), the save points in the game are cruel. You have to approach each level with planning, getting caught outside a vehicle will lead to immediate death so you need to plan where you put vehicle for use later. You will rarely complete a level first time but the satisfaction you get when you do is worth the effort in the end. Likewise the boss battles are just epic, crazy epic. The draw distance of this game is truly shocking but thankfully it has one of the greatest maps in video game history, you can put a marker on the map where you wish to go and an on screen arrow will guide you to that exact location. I never realised the ntsc version let you play the game fully on Zero difficulty, so I would recommend that version. It's a pity this game cannot be played on emulators because save states would really take a lot of the chore out of it and make it more accessible to play in 2015. When Rare released Jet force gemini it was described at the time as being Body Harvest but by Rare, I love JFG but it's no Body Harvest

I rented this game when it first came out with Megaman Legends; it was late fall when it was cold outside, and just hearing the score was what just swept me off my feet and years I have been wanting this game. 2003 came about and I went to the one game store where it was in stock and in mint condition, I hugged the owner tightly I was so excited. -Onizuka

I played the hell out of this when I was like 9 years old and it left an enormous impression on me. Great game, especially for its time.

My god this game was great. My dad picked it up for me in the bargain bin at blockbusters. I had no idea what it was nor had i ever heard of it. However me and my mate absolutely rinsed this game and it has become one of our most memorable games ever played. One part that i was particularly fond of was the scud missile in seberia. I had a save just before taking it and i would constantly have fun nuking a random village and creating an absolutely gigantic crater in its place. Would definately love to see a remake of this game on PC :)

One of my Favorite N64 games. I remember really well when i finished it! It was no easy task!

It was one of my favorites. This was a game that checked all my starship troopers/blue gender fantasies.

This game was such a surprise to me as a kid...its was like a sci fi gta. so much fun to play.

I was born in 1995 so I wasn't to excited about picking it up on day 1 but I remember after the turn of the century finding it at a pawn shop and thinking it looked interesting. I was still a bit to young to understand what to do and never got too far. But watching you play took me back and I think I might pull out the N64 and see what is up!

Body Harvest is actually quite reminiscent to Drakkhen on SNES. It was way ahead of its time yet also a bit behind it's time in certain aspects, and both games have fantastic sound tracks.

@@n64glennplant It was basically like The Elder Scrolls but from 1989 on the Amiga. I played the SNES version and almost beat it (and then I got distracted with other games so I didn't finish it.) It can be quite confusing at first, but I found myself enjoying it immensely after a while of playing without a guide. One of the few Western RPGs we got on SNES.

Body Harvest was sick. I remember having nightmares as a kid because of it. It was a good game for what it was

I was really young when this came out. I got it cause I like the cover A LOT. I was too young and dumb to get past the first stage, but I LOVED this game. It had TONS of button combo cheats.

I picked this up totally randomly as a kid, because of the cover. was not disappointing, and i frequently thing about just how great this was.

As a kid, I'd be playing this and Hybrid Heaven when I wasn't playing WCW/nWo Revenge, Duke Nukem 64, Ocarina of Time and Super Mario 64 as a kid. I also loved Diddy Kong Racing and thought it was way better than Mario Kart (except for multiplayer maybe), playing N64 games now as an adult makes me appreciate how good we had it really, people hate on the n64 for its limitations and poor sound etc but I thought it was awesome then and I still do now. Thank you for this video.

When i got my own N64 for xmas back in the day, when i was 8 years old, i only had xmas money and had nothing for it but my controller so my mom took me out to get some games with the 50$ my grandma gave me. I had wanted to get mario kart as any kid my age would but it ended up being too expensive so even as young as i was i turned to the bargain bid. That day i got got 2 games each for 15$ with a memory card, those games were Hexen 64 and body harvest. And wail some of my fondest memories are of me and my friends playing Mario kart 64 that night it was shelved as i had been busy plugging hours into Body Harvest. This may be the most overlooked and unappreciated game i can think of and its good to see it get some much needed attention. your one my favorites Glenn, keep it up

I loved this game so much and even completed it as a young teen. I always liked the creepy music inside buildings when you were looking for clues and talking to the local people. It was hard as s**t but so rewarding when you got to the next area. My favourite area was the Jungle and i liked the WW2 planes so much. The worst levels to complete were america and the comet. This game had such a thick atmosphere and being able to use so many different vehicles from so many time periods was a blast. I remember, even back then this game was unknown to must of the gamers. Like you said, it is a hidden gem. Thanks for covering it :)

I remember not having an idea what to do in this game as a kid and giving up on it after a week's rental. As luck would have it, I managed to snag the cartridge a few years ago for about 4 dollars and have really grown to love it as a hidden gem on the system. Who knew that an obscure game such as this could have such a troubled development?

Good memories using the recoil of the gun to fly through the map with a boat and shooting people for no reason xD

Body Harvest is really a great game and was way ahead from its time and the game def deserved better recognition than it got, the game has a great storyline, gameplay, soundtrack and good graphics

This game is fucking amazing, just picked up a copy yesterday after having not played it in years

My older brother got this quite close to when it came out, i was so young that all i remember is it being hard but awesome. I didnt think it was this in depth but thats how much i didnt understand. This review got me wanting to play it.

This game gave me so much rage. I often at times found myself wondering aimlessly in levels with no clue what I was supposed to do. But, it was one of my favourite titles that none of my friends had even heard about when I got it.

I will add that we should respect quality trailblazers like DMA for making this game. I feel the vision was held back by the tech and coding limitations. Games like this inspired developers to reach the GTA and open worlds we know today

I think that this game had so much going on that people didn't know what to do with it. Lots of different themes and moving parts, kind of like a peanut butter pickle sandwich - weird, but it somehow was delicious. I feel like the unforgiving save points and clunky controls held this game back, but it was a lot of fun being able to jump in and grab whatever vehicle was just lying around. I feel like if I took a more "sandbox" approach to it these days I would enjoy it more.

I love the scope of this game, the way the world is just laid out in front of you for you to explore is unlike anything else besides Zelda in this console. I really would love to see them take a break from gta and give this idea another shot. i`m sure it would turn out better than last time.. but alas, taking risks is not something AAA developers do anymore.
