Roadsters - Nintendo 64 Review - Ultra HDMI - HD

Roadsters is a racing game released by Titus Software in 2000 for the Nintendo 64, PlayStation, Sega Dreamcast and Game Boy Color. It is a car racing game that features both licensed cars from manufacturers (e.g. Mitsubishi, Alfa Romeo, Lotus) and unlicensed cars from imaginary manufacturers that are based on and bear great resemblance to their equivalent, real car models. The game also includes a multi-player mode supports up to 2 human players that can compete in any of the available circuits with 4 more CPU controlled racers.[3] It has met with mixed to negative reviews from critics (with the exception of the N64 version, which received positive reception). Video game developer Player 1 was originally plan to release the game for the PlayStation 2, but it was canceled.

I remember playing this in the Winter of 1999. I rented it from a local shop. Then the snow hit and I couldn't take it back for weeks. So, ended up playing it all the time. Snowed in playing this, happy days.

The game was actually developed by Smart Dog studio & published by Titus. They also developed another fantastic arcade racer for PS2 named 'Downforce' which was also underappreciated. Downforce was their final game & the studio folded in 2002. I highly encourage anyone to give Downforce a try.

Raven Gaming Many did not have fog either. As a retro collector I have a large collection of N64 game. Some games use light fogging effect on background mountains to replicate atmospheric lighting - eg Goldeneye, Zelda etc. This can be turned off via Gameshark in these games, but to be honest I like the effect.

I never really payed attention to who made the games I got as a kid. Mainly, I only had the front art and back of the box to see what looked cool and what didn't. I didn't get Nintendo Power until around the end of the N64's life cycle and by then I already had a sizeable collection of Game boy and N64 games. Nowadays, i'm much more aware of who is making what so I can judge accordingly. I mainly pay attention to LPs and reviews to see if I would like a game or not. Having youtube videos now makes it so much easier to find new games to play that you may not have picked up in the first place.

I typically stop watching an LP early if i'm interested in playing the game for myself. I don't mind having some games spoiled for me if i've never heard of the title before. For something i'm really looking forward to like Zelda: Breath of the Wild, i'll avoid any coverage like the plague and just wait for the game to come out. I try to wait for reviews though since I don't have a lot of money to spend on video games and if I end up with something bad or something I don't like, i'll be really disappointed I wasted money on it.

I totaly missed that game when it was release, just like you said magazines did not talked that much about it. I discovered it a few years later and it's one my prefered arcade race on N64 if not the one. Gameplay is good and difficulty is high. Graphism are awesome compared to many titles, lights and rain effects are very nice and as you said they are a lot of details on the tracks. The only issue for me is that sometimes the difficulty for qualifications is too high compared to IA real performance in game.

You may have gotten comments on this earlier, seeing as your review is about 5 years old, but the soundtrack you have used in the background is from the other Titus racer - Automobili Lamborghini. I know that because that was my first N64 game. I was desperate to buy GoldenEye, but they were sold out everywhere. The only game I owned for a while was Automobili Lamborghini, and I played it a lot. Therefore I can instantly recohnize the soundtrack and sound effects from that game. Otherwise this review made me want to check out Roadsters. It’ll be on my «to play playlist». I’m currently on Turok Rage Wars, after beating the three canon games.

In the professional music products world, Behringer audio equipment always get a bad rep, and is openly mocked and hated, one could say they're looked at kinda like the Nickleback of music gear, but although a lot of their stuff is pretty low-end, some of their products are surprising. Or Crate amplification, has a bad rep as all they make is ok for practice, but horrible for live or studio use, but their really worth-while stuff goes past most people's radar cuz the good stuff is their few most expensive amps that most musicians don't have lying around in their garage. Titus's good games get overshadowed by their bad ones, even LJN had their few goodies.

i dunno if this counts since its a hardware bias rather than a software one...but i simply won't buy products with a madcatz brand...sure..i know everyone sweats their newer TE level fight sticks nowadays...but a generation of some of the WORST gaming products cannot be overlooked by this consumer. back to your review....i do think its greatly overstated that the n64 has the best "racers"...i completely disagree with this actually. Even if you limit it to arcade style racers..i think the n64 is more about quantity over quality in that particular genre. That being said...this review caught me off guard...this looks like a surprisingly good game..i will have to try this one out...

I've never been a fan of Titus. I hated the Crazy Cars games on the Amiga. I don't hate their two N64 racing games as much, but there's something off about the controls in both games. The cars seem to grip the road too well. I often try to anticipate a turn and start the turn early to account for the car sliding and instead I end up smacking into the wall on the inner side of the turn. Once I get used to this and start trusting that I can turn late, the games flips this mechanic and suddenly the car slides into the outside wall. I can never accurately predict if the car will turn on a dime or skid.

Can anyone say what makes the N64 versions better than the Dreamcast version? As I've quite been enjoying the game on DC. Also interesting to note it was also originally planned for PS2, as Player 1 made a sequel that was a Dreamcast exclusive in Exhibition of Speed. It's definitely up there with Titus' best games IMO.

I don't know, I actually _liked_ Superman when I first played it. By no means my favourite game, on the N64, but I remember it being a fun little rental. And I recently picked up the Hercules game, which was also Titus (tho I haven't had the chance to play it yet). This game looks like it may be as fun as Beetle Adventure Racing, so I might keep an eye out for it. Shame about the lack of expansion pack support, tho. To answer your question, Ubisoft. To this day, the three experiences I've had with them ranged from forgettable (some Rayman game I can't even remember the title to) to downright terrible (Watch_Dogs and Rayman 3D). Now, every time I see something like Assassins Creed Origins and see how beautiful it is, I just remember Watch_Dogs, and that's enough for me to look for an enjoyable game instead.

While I do think that the PS1 was the superior console as well as the better buy in terms of the quantity of games as well as varied genres such as RPGs and fighting games, I think that the N64 had the best of the genres that were available. Platformers, Adventure, First Person Shooter, and Racing games were for the most part superior on N64.

ehhhhh. . .i can agree on Platformers, Adventure and FPS but racing games? yeah N64 has some good racing games this one, Ridge Racer 64, the Rush games, the Cruis'n ones, Mario Kart 64 and Diddy Kong Racing the problem is. . .that's it that's much of the racing games i know there's on N64 compared to the large list there's on PS1 (yes there shovelware but there's also so much hidden gems racing games too and count the Japanese exclusives ones) like hell Need For Speed is not on the N64 and even that MK64 and DKR are great kart racers nothing can top CTR in my opinion but yeah N64 has great racing games just not too much

I genuinely don't understand the fog or lack of thereof in N64 games. This game looks good with minimal to no fog, yet some games have terrible fog. Was it due to a lack of time or understanding of how to program for the console?

  • @overwatch761

    @overwatch761

    7 жыл бұрын

Nick Whitman Volumetric/positional fog was used for a variety of reasons on N64. PS1/Saturn couldn't process volumetric fog and everything always popped up right in front of you. On N64 some developers used fog to hide pop up eg Turok, others used it for effect - eg mainly to replicate atmospheric lighting conditions such as on background mountains eg Goldeneye, Zelda, Mario, F1 WGP...etc The 32/64bit era was one of 3D experimentation. It just so happens I think developers liked the look of it. Fog can be turned off via Gameshark in most games too.

Well..... had a good think about..... and funnily enough all the videogame producers i tend to avoid like the plague are the big names. In particular = Sega, Midway, EA, and dare i say it..... Nintendo themselves. All 4 of these publishers are guilty of dumbing down, and releasing games which i find insulting to the term "Intellectual Property". Games without spirit. Games made purely for cash. Or games with subliminal sinister motives. All 4 companies have made classic games, yet the corporate entity has a mind of it's own(GREED, GREED, GREED, GREED). Personally i reckon most gamers pay little attention to "developers" names and focus on the franchise and publisher. There is the "Rare" exception though. Nice review.
