There was a huge secret cave place in one of the levels. It was in one of the coastal races. You would drive your car down on a side of a cliff somewhere and enter a small cave. The cave was huge with load of crazy jumps and ramps. So cool.

Getting there was even a challenge! Great memories trying to reach that hidden stunt area close to the water and wrecking each other in the meantime, and every time you'd explode you were set back on track and it would take minutes just to get there again haha :') Also playing tag mode in the harbors was awesome. One of my favorite racers on the Nintendo 64!

I remember finding the stunt arena (in a cave down the hill by the ocean on one level) as a kid by total accident. Found it probably within a month of owning the game; not years later. Back then the Internet was still new and me being so young I never thought about sharing this discovery. Anyway, when I stumbled upon the secret stunt arena I was ecstatic. I thought it was the coolest thing ever and I probably spent a handful of hours playing in that area. I remember also going over all the other tracks with a fine tooth comb after this and, while finding other cool secrets, nothing compared to the stunt arena.

@@ratiocinator Same with me and my friends on the stunt area. We also found it not too long after getting the game trying to hunt down all the keys. (IIRC, isn't there a key in there?) It was such a pain in the ass to get to without blowing up that once you got there... if you hit a ramp wrong, you would be picked up and put back up top onto the track. I remember there was a cheat code that C-UP would just pick you up and put you right where you were. You could C-UP continually to get keys in the sky if you wanted to be cheap. Really good memories with this game.

I think what I really liked about San Francisco Rush, both the arcade and N64 version, is that I'd describe it as a 'chaos party race'. You're encouraged to bash into guys and knock them into stuff and when they do it to you it's not because it's personal but because it's fun! Its closest contemporary's I'd say would be Flatout 2 and Burnout 3. Part of the fun is "Did you see that crash? It was all like vreeee-kerpow explud!"

S0up3rD0up3r Believe it or not, that racing game that featured West Coast Customs, LA Rush, was actually the fourth installment to the rush series. That could potentially be considered a modern sequel but considering that it came out around ten years ago makes it debatable.

Oh, memories... I had this game when I was a kid, and I remember a few things about it. The first easy track, always using the easiest vehicles because I was just a kid who wasn't very good at games in general, how incredibly hard it was to avoid exploding, and trying out a manual transmission once and then refusing to go back to it ever again. But what I remember most about it was the announcer's lines, from "Checkpoint!" to the signature "RUSSSSSHHHH!!!!!!!" at the start of the race.

I picked Rush up a few months after it came out and over the years remained a favorite of both my friends and myself. I never really felt I mastered the controls (which, as you pointed out, handling some cars was a bit frustrating) but ample fun was had nonetheless. My favorite aspect was easily the exploration which was featured to a degree I'd never seen before in a racing game. From collecting the keys to the countless shortcuts, enormous hidden half-pip in track 2 and underground stunt park in track 6, not to mention the hidden Alcatraz track, Rush blew my little adolescent mind many, many times. Great review! :D

Every track was so full of hidden pathways and things to explore. Also woth mentioning was the multiplayer. For people asking for a sequel, I consider split/second to be a worth successor of the rush series, you guys should try it out.

It's finally come! So excited for the rest of the week!!!! I personally wasn't attached to this first game like rush 2 & 2049. multiplayer stunt mode is where I sunk the majority of my time during my childhood and today. I am always able to convince non 64 lovers to take part in this mode and they end up having a blast. It becomes so competitive to land that one ridiculous stunt to beat out a friend!

We would have competitions and vote on who had the best crashes. Some were totally epic. Then when Rush 2 was released I was totally excited for it and bought it the first day. My friends and I played it for one weekend and then one guy asked to borrow it. He completely stole it from me and refused to return it.

Picking this game up a few months ago, I was very impressed with the total package for an early N64 racer. It's fast, smooth and graphically very solid for its time. Like you said, it blows its contemporaries out of the water. Also, as far as afordability goes, the game is a steal. I'm personally more a fan of the sequels and eagerly await your reviews of them.

I know this video is over 8 years old but, from what I can tell, no one mentioned that Trick Park hidden at the very bottom of one of the levels. As a kid I remember carefully driving off road, down the hill, close to the water in order to get to the opening of the trick area. It was a blast. The only bad thing was when you crashed - it sent you back to the race and it was a tedious drive to get back there. I have no idea how I found out about it but I have never forgotten it!

So glad to see you start up your Rush reviews! I feel like this game laid a good foundation for Rush 2 with its graphics and track designs, but the music and physics in Rush 2 are much improved. This one is fun to play, but it's hard to take it seriously like I can with the other Rush games. Rush 2 is my favourite, only because 2049 has a terrible amount of locked content, and it can get too frustrating, grindy, and even boring to complete it 100%. Can't wait to see what you and others think!

So you DO listen to us! HAHAHAHA! Just kidding, brother! Glad to see this series pop up! I'm SUCH a fan of this series. I had several (rather popular) radio shows that were devoted to just playing this SF and Rush 2. My fiancee and I play this game to this day, and have a blast doing it! I'm not sure how old I was when this game released, but I remember getting it either for Christmas or my birthday. I fell in love instantly. I'm a car guy (as you can tell by my channel) and have always loved racing (as you can tell by my channel) so to have cars that I could recognize (such as the E34/38, Supra, Corvette, Mustang, etc.) and do INSANE tricks in, just made my day. I would spend hours, upon hours, just driving around in free mode exploring the vastness of each city. When Rush 2 came out, it blew me away! I can't wait for you to review that so I can hear your thoughts!

Me and my brother played this game endlessly as young kids and I absolutely love everything about it. What ever we named our profiles on the control pak was our characters. For example we'd name and then imagine Sonic and Tails were driving and even role play with the infinite time cheat and a massive amount of other fun cheats we could use. This game hits Nostalgia more than any other racing game I've ever played.

The hidden stunt course...my friend and I tried to see how long we could hang in there with the well hidden underground course only to find that we failed, exploded and got sucked back out onto the main road. The entry to the stunt course was well hidden on a hill side on that long, skinny track...and we had to be careful even going down the hillside as to not blow up getting there :) There were many "all nighters" we'd be up playing this and inputting some of the codes so we can race upside down, in heavy fog, or disable the auto position that would happen when you turned over as to maximize our time in the hidden stunt areas.

Before buying this, i had never played played the arcade game and was looking for a chrissy present my grand parent could give me back when i was a kid. I ended up loving this game for so many reason. At first i didnt like the driving so much, thought it was alot different to the usual, but as soon as i got used to it, this whole game opened up. I loved going into practice mode and finding all the keys, and also trying to find all the shortcuts. I then tried really hard to beat the game on hard settings etc. After beating the game and finding all the keys (plus just generally enjoying racing for fun) i found new exciting ways to really enjoy this game, especially with friends. One mode, which i must of spent 10 to 20 hours on with friends and by myself, was a self made challenge. We would play on the 2nd race course and modify all the settings so that it would be Low gravity, realy hard AI, very windy and you only lived once (including the computer). The Aim was to see how quickly you could kill of the AI (which as you know were really hard to budge). This challenge was so much fun, especially since the opening start of Race 2 was really hilly, so lots of airtime (which made it slightly easier to kill the AI. Others different challengers i enjoyed was trying to break the invisible was in race one. I would put on low gravity, and if you would hit a jump/rock at the right angle at the start of the race, you could go through the invisible wall and fall through the Track. My other fond memories was unlocking the secret 7th level, which was amazing to me at the time, as i had played a fair amount before this secret was known, plus i also quite enjoyed the secret stunt location in race 6. Overall, one of my best experiences on the N64

alot of people don't realize when they play San Francisco Rush, Rush 2 and Rush 2049, it forces u 2 master huggin' corners and when u master tha huggin' corner technique, it will also help u on other racing games dat some people say has bad handling like for example, Driven on Gamecube and others!

the best thing for me was spending hours trying to survive level 6 in reverse with deaths off, and trying to kill all the other racers and be the last one standing. That is how my brothers and I sunk loads of hours into this one! STL is the best song also. More into level 6 in reverse, the paths you take just hold so many daunting jumps that even the AI takes. It's fantastic!

spent countless hours on this game as a kid. i think the main selling point of it was the physics combined with stunts, which many racing games at the time did not feature.

For me this was my first racer that didn't have carts. I think I played practice mode the most, I had a lot of fun exploring the tracks and finding the best ways to get really good air time. And getting my car as damaged as possible without exploding. I also remember trying to make my initials ASS and it wouldn't let me. Nasty. XD

And In the case of this game that made my teenhood and became very shortly my most favorite racer in my now 42 years of life in this earth since Pole Position II on the Atari 7800: Neon-flavored Skiddles on wheels. FROM ATARI GAMES, TASTE THE RAINBOW ON THE STREETS OF SAN FRANCISCO!!😉😎

Thumbs up! I always rather appreciated 'San Francisco Rush' for both the racing and for having a rather hefty number of game settings, though several had to be unlocked through bizarre button codes. My favorite feature has always been the option to race every course forwards and backwards (in addition to mirroring). This effectively turns six tracks into a challenging pack of twelve (or 24, if mirrored tracks are added), with the backward tracks having their own series of alternate paths and shortcuts. Great times, man; great times!

My copy is waiting for me in the U.S. I'm looking forward to getting it back home and playing it, along with a good many others. It's cheaper to fly back and bring everything back in my suitcase than it is to pay shipping, and in many cases it isn't even available, so that's what I do. Oh and visit family and friends since I'm there anyway hahaha! Looking forward to the rest of the RUSH reviews.

@@n64glennplant good question! I'm not sure. I have all three rush games and my favorite part is searching for shortcuts and keys. USA has Mt dew cans which makes a glugging sound which I still get a kick out of. 2049 has lots of coins instead of keys which are an awesome challenge. My favorite track would be the one with the giant half pipe in the first rush game. I could go on and on

Arguably my fave racing series to date. I have often tried to explain to others that RUSH offered a full 3D racing experience like no other game. Ridge Racer, SEGA Rally etc - although massively excellent in their own respect, were some what two-dimensional compared to what RUSH offered. A classic example of easy to learn; hard to master. So much skill involved in putting together the fastest, incident free laps. Get an equally able friend for 2P and the races are intense bumper to bumper, high speed action! All the games on N64 are excellent, imo... each is better than the last, however, all are relevant and have their own place, in their own respect. 2049 is the overall crowning achievement of the series though. One of the best racing games ever made. Ever...

My favourite game in the Rush series. I didn't own it myself, but a friend bought it and it was one of those games we kept coming back to for years. I bought the third Rush game myself, and I loved it, but it still wasn't as memorable as this one. Did anyone manage to collect all those keys? I swear, some were nigh on impossible to get to. Seemed like they required an insane amount of luck and skill to reach.

also, while i certainly spent a lot of time with the original SF rush on the n64 and loved it, i was disappointed that it didn't look quite as good as the arcade game. fortunately midway rectified this with the next two installments with rush 2 and 2049 having much better draw distance and comparable graphical sheen to the arcade.
