Classic Game Room - EXTREME-G 2 review for N64

Classic Game Room reviews EXTREME-G 2 for the Nintendo 64 from Acclaim and Probe released in 1998! XG2 is the direct sequel to 1997's excellent Extreme-G for the N64 and plays much the same with hyper-fast driving, wild track designs and futuristic weaponry. While the designers seem to make the game more EXTREME!!! for Extreme-G 2 they also mar its performance with murky visuals, frequent slowdown, boring music and clumsy track designs. XG2 is a fun game but a step back from the original that remains a futuristic combat racing game worth playing if you can find it for a good price (which you should be able to). CGR Extreme-G 2 video review features XG2 gameplay on N64. XG2 has numerous codes and cheats that unlock new bikes and features.

This game was a hidden gem, I played this so much when I was s kid, and yes breaking the sound barrier was brilliant. Watching the gameplay abd hearing all the noises in this review brought a huge smile to my face

XG2 is the superior game. Once you learned the controls and tracks things get easier yet still has challenge. Breaking the sound barrier is one of the most satisfying things I've ever experienced in a racing game.

@InecomCompany - Awesome review as always! I can tell Mark is JUST barely (like half an era) ahead of me in the gaming world because of what his childhood systems were. The 90s references in this were hilarious - Bugle Boy jeans, acid wash, and Netscape and 14.4 dial up modems. Ahh....the 90s. Only thing he missed was Indiglo watches and this review would have been epic! XD I have this cart for my N64 too by the way. Bought it new in a bargain bin at Wallymart I think.

actually, it's easy on certain tracks, the second track when you first start the game for the first time actually has a perfect section where you can easily break the sound barrier with one or two nitros. of course, not all the bikes could easily do that. depends on their stats.

This game was far better than the first one, the main problem with this one was that it required more skill than the 1st one and that it did not explain in the game or even the manual how you were supposed to play it. The tracks were all built around the new pivot system, basically if you pull back on the analogue stick while turning the trajectory changes, this gave the bikes a crazy amount of control while still maintaining high speeds. It a real shame they dropped a lot of the ideas in this for the next game instead of simply improving them.

Also I would add that this game had the best combat in this sort game for its time, you literally say fuck it chose a combat bike and kill all the competition before even bothering with the race.

Nice, I personnaly agree with the 2 analysis of the #1 and #2 games. I am an EXTREME fan of the whole serie, I have finished in all possible way the 4 games, but the #2 has for me the less good for both sensation and musics. You should have mentionned still that the #2 was the first to take in consideration the wall of the sound, which actually becomes the main interest of the game : find the key areas where we can combine nitro + turbo on the ground on a straight line to break 700 mph, heard the BANG and stop the music.. ;)

You didn't even break the sound barrier once in the clips. That's one of the shining aspects of this game for me. The rush of going ~768+ miles per hour and hearing almost nothing past the sound of the squeal of the cycle displacing air is irreplaceable and is not matched in any other XG game (or any other game I know of for that matter). Other than that, I agree with your review wholeheartedly: XG2 is a decently good breakneck future cycle racer with a tad too much emphasis on "BEING X-TREME".

Ugh. I HATED this game back in the day. I had it for PS1, and anytime anybody even thought about using a power-up (which was all the time), the game slowed to a crawl. I had no reliable way to tell how fast I was going, and the controller might as well have been covered with butter for how accurate the controls were. Anyway, nice review, Mark! :) I'm proud to be a CGR...ist? Ite? Ian? Yes, there we go, I'm proud to be a CGRian!

Now, to break up all the fuck and ass in the comments below, allow me to comment on the game some, as I've beaten it before; Yeah, the game is tricker. It becomes a memory game after awhile, but once you memorize the tracks, the gameplay is surprisingly satisfying. I often found myself in the starter tracks constantly above the sound barrier, once I got them down. And really, that's all you need to do is race good, and the weapons soon lose their relevance. (Except for laser mines, leader missiles and rear-fire rockets, those are reasonably handy no matter what, if for nothing else to drop and play keep-away with.) As a spoiler, once you beat everything in the game, you can also do the ridiculous act of selecting the riders themselves as bikes. Yes, you can run at super-sonic speeds _on foot_.

+bluephreakr lol, i remember looking at my racer going in a cartwheel at super-sonic speeds. imagine that in real life lmao. also, didnt they also made a reference to Wipeout with that cheatcode that transform your bikes into planes? (idk if i can call it planes but whatever lol)

HackerHaunter03 Yep, they did. Forgot the cheat off-hand but it might be 2094 as player name. It just makes all the bikes into paper plane-like ships.

I actually like XG2 way better than XG1 because I can actually control the bike in the second installment. It's like they forgot the steering controls in the first game. Anyway if you think it's easy to get spun around in this game, you haven't played Rollcage or Rollcage Stage II on the PS1. I should send those to you because I intend on getting rid of them anyway.

The only good thing to come from Acclaim in it's final days (aside from the PS2 port of Sega's Crazy Taxi) was Burnout and Burnout 2: Point of Impact. Forsaken came out around the same time as Extreme-G, and it was pretty decent.

I will say though, the superior version of XG2 is the PC version, not N64. On the PC there's no multiplayer at all, which is disappointing, but what you get is higher resolution support, a completely stable 60+ fps framerate, and a spectacularly great CD audio soundtrack. Very, VERY highly recommended, it's one of my favorite PC racing games of the '90s!
