Since this is the first series I’ve seen that focuses on graduates working for an investment bank I thought I’d react and explain some of the scenes for the educational benefit of future applicants and those curious to learn more about the banking and finance industry. All views are my own and have been drawn from my previous experiences of working in the industry.

I believe this was the person he was talking about : www.theguardian.com/business/2013/nov/22/bank-intern-moritz-erhardt-died-epileptic-seizure-shower The tragic punchline is that, after this, Goldman Sachs vowed to cap intern's days to only *17* hour shifts : www.theguardian.com/business/2015/jun/17/goldman-sachs-interns-work-hours?CMP=twt_gu&CMP=twt_gu. *Only* 17 hours? Wow!
A young Goldman Sachs executive decided to get his first tailor made suit. So he went to the finest tailor in town and got measured for a suit. A week later he went in for his first fitting. He put on the suit and he looked stunning, he felt that in this suit he can do business. As he was preening himself in front of the mirror he reached down to put his hands in the pockets and to his surprise he noticed that there were no pockets. He mentioned this to the tailor who asked him, "Didn't you tell me you were a banker?" The young man answered, "Yes, I did." To this the tailor said, "Who ever heard of a banker with his hands in his own pockets?"

Sales and Trading had some of the worst douches when I was in operations. Glad, I managed to move to Risk where even the portfolio managers seem like saints in comparison.
This series has shown me that a lot of the things folks think don’t happen…happen far more often that we would like to believe/be comfortable with. It’s interesting because I think people WANT a lot of the series to just be very dramatized and then find out from people who’ve worked in the industry, or are currently, that it can be even more dramatic than that. My friends who are in banking have really had some experiences that sound like the plot to a film. and it’s wild
I remember the 2013 BAML guy too, sad times man. It was a real shocker for our intern class.
I actually got the "tell us a joke" question in a video interview, definitly be prepared for it. I have heard from multiple peers in IB that it does come up. BTW my joke was: why are bankers in Ireland the best in the world? Because their capital is always Dublin.

Great vid - really helpful to hear that the show got so much stuff right, and to find out what ‘half a yard’ is.
omg this is so true, I hate people who expect to stay up late in the office for no good reason. I interned at EY (transaction advisory services) and we were done by 7pm one day. So all of the interns asked around the office, if there is any more work we need to get done or if anyone needs help, but the seniors said that no, everyone is finishing up and we are free to go home. The next morning we (interns) got a FURIOUS email from one of the A2 who was so incredibly rude and said that it is nonsense how interns went home at 7pm while he had to stay until 10pm with the workload. Like how are we supposed to know that you will get new tasks at 9pm??
@c.aresty
Жыл бұрын
At my job (M&A law), we have strict hours for when we need to be on call. The partners will be furious if we don't respond during those hours, but our time is our time. Granted, we're on call 90 hours a week (9:30am-10:30pm M-F, 10:30am-10pm Sat & Sun), but those clear boundaries makes life easier & less stressful. I'd hate to work a job where the expectations of the job weren't laid out clearly.
"Don't stay in the office all night, just have it ready in the morning", MD. All this was even more dialed up in NYC.
@MsTuliplady

In a way, NYC is getting a bit of karma for the years of abuse of tens of thousands over the years. From the immigrant who needs to work 3 jobs to survive, to the office worker who needs to commute two hours, to afford something remotely middle class outside of the City, to the person who has to work for companies that abuse, just to enrich themselves
Disclaimer: This series is trying to portray mostly front office client facing roles. I work at GS in the back office and it’s totally not like this. But I agree that across the whole firm it’s very common to eat at your desk and in the evening the office gets way more quiet and you can focus like at the library.

"man grew up playing football in the cages" that's when you got the like from me. As a business student who has to deal with arrogant finance students all day long, this video is quite shocking to me. Fantastic stuff Afzal! Napping in the toilets does actually happen sadly! But doubt people do it on the floor - it’s never that clean! “Don’t stay up all night, but...”. Happens all the time. In fact the actual quote used to be “Don’t kill yourself over this”, which is of course a terrible thing to say. There actually is a lot of truth to what we see in the episode, with my experience in IBD. They have done a great job of capturing the general environment, the emotions and the pressure where you feel like the whole world is on your shoulders. I deeply appreciate this technical breakdown and analysis of the show. I’m watching your video as research for my social breakdown and analysis of the show. I’m not in this industry, but as a young Black woman, I’m noticing a lot of AMAZING things that the series is doing with the characterization of Harper and Eric that must be discussed. There’s a historical context there and so many good lines between the two that take this into account that many aren’t discussing. Thank you so much for taking the time to do this! Absolutely wonderful!

The excellent thing about Industry is that it highlights how it’s never been a meritocracy; hardly are people in their positions based on merit. Afzal, this reaction video is awesome.
What was interesting for me watching your analysis was that for some of the things you said weren’t happening friends of mine that work at other investments banks experienced those things. And it’s true that it really comes down to company environment and ethics. Like maybe not at Goldman does it happen…but it happens elsewhere. I hope this series motivates more people to speak out about those traumatic and just downright terrible experiences they’re having.
