Cheat sheet: #1 Princess Charlotte, the Princess of Wales and only legitimate grandchild of George III and Queen Charlotte, died giving birth. The man weeping about it is her father, Prince George (later George IV). George and Queen Charlotte had 15 children, but only 13 survived to adulthood. #2 This period is called The Regency because George III eventually succumbed to mental illness (depending on who you ask, it could have been bipolar disorder or porphyria) and his eldest son, Prince George, had to rule as regent in his stead. Queen Charlotte still wielded a lot of power, though. #3 Charlotte's sons are all playboys with mistresses (scandalous commoners and married noblewomen) and a shit ton of illegitimate babies. The daughters are all spinsters because Charlotte and George kept them under lock and key (way too protective). In the show, though, they just make the girls seem like it was their idea to not get married rather than the king and queen's mistake. #4 When Princess Charlotte died in childbirth, there were no legitimate grandchildren to inherit the throne. Queen Charlotte forced some of her sons into marriages with foreign princesses to force them to give her a grandchild, loveless marriages or not. Two of Queen Charlotte's three eldest sons would each get a turn being king (the other died before he could), but each would die childless. The fourth son, Prince Edward, was married to Princess Victoria. They would produce the future Queen Victoria, though Prince Edward would die when she was still a baby and never get to see her success. #5 The woman inspecting young Charlotte is Princess Augusta. Her husband/young George's dad Prince Frederick died before he and Augusta could be crowned. George II's crown (Prince Frederick's dad) was therefore passed on to his grandson, George III, instead. Augusta was never queen as a result (she was skipped over without her husband alive to claim it himself), but she was mother of the king, which still had its own level of power. #6 She was not wiping off Charlotte's mole, she was checking to see if she was just wearing dark makeup. In the show, she knew Charlotte had Moor ancestry (a term for northern African people at the time), but hadn't thought it would be so obvious to see. In reality, Charlotte did very likely have a Moor ancestor, but they were from like 12 generations before her, so it would have been too diluted for it to matter in her genetics. However, the show's re-imagining of history is super cool and wonderfully inclusive! *Edited

only point of info, its Charlotte's 2 sons not three that become king after George III. George IV and his brother William IV. Their 2nd son Frederick died before his brother George IV. Otherwise excellent cheat sheet!

And they're going to be releasing the book that this season was based off of...very soon, if I recall correctly. So this season was technically ALSO based off of a book... the book just hasn't been released yet.

She wasn’t trying to wipe off her mole she thought she was wearing dark makeup because she wasn’t expecting charlotte to be that brown.

I know that this is an old comment, but she very easily could’ve also been trying to wipe off the mole, because back in the day there was a fashion trend of putting makeup over any blemishes on your skin to make them look like moles. This was unfortunately linked to women who would do this to cover up the sores that would develop on their skin after being infected with syphilis. I read a lot of historical fiction, and while I’m sure in the show it was not done specifically to reference this trend, but it was my primary thought when I first saw this scene, and it made me want that Queen Mother to kick bricks

Fun fact about the actors who play young George and young lady Danbury these roles are there very first acting jobs. They are just out of acting school. And the princess who died was her granddaughter and her great granddaughter. The child of her son who was crying

This series is so much deeper than brigertons

For historical context: King George the Third and Queen Charlotte had 15 children but lost two young sons when they were only a few years old each. The princess in the coffin was their granddaughter, the only heir to the throne as the daughter of their eldest son George the Fourth (the man who was crying beside her deathbed). She died in childbirth. As for the main plot of the present day, the Queen has to find a resolution to the lack of an heir to the throne as her many children have struggled to bare children and/or have provided many illegitimate children (babies born out of wedlock). Hope this helps those of you needing clarification😊

​​@@fleurgi The show was wrong to call Princess Charlotte of Wales (granddaughter of Queen Charlotte and King George III) the Princess Royal as this title was bestowed to their eldest daughter Charlotte the Princess Royal and Queen of Wurttenburg who was the only one of their daughters to be married. And this title is bestowed by the Monarch (not automatically given) to the Monarch's eldest daughter and lasts a life time so wouldn't be passed on to the Monarch's eldest daugher until after the current Princess Royal died.

@@tink6225 that's fair. I just wanted to point it out in case anyone was confused as the Princes Royal is also called Charlotte along with her niece, Princess Charlotte of Wales (the one who died in childbirth).

The child that The King and Queen had who passed away was Amelia (George used to call her Emily). Word is that she was his favourite child and when she passed away is when he lost his sanity entirely. Their story is so tragic and makes me tear up without fail everytime

I’ve rewatched that scene so many times and I cry every single time without fail 🥲

This became my favorite season of Bridgerton, Charlotte + George became my favorite Bridgerton couple AND George became my favorite character. That's how much this series impacted me lol

I love how invested y'all are in the characters. Shonda Rhimes is an extremely talented writer. I'm so excited to see how this series goes.

Just finished episode 6 last night. Glad you are reacting. They popped out 15 not 13. Two died before adulthood. None of the younger characters from Bridgerton are born yet. She tried to wipe off her makeup but it was her skin tone.

You guys never let me down, so happy you are getting these out right away. ❤

I loved this so much more than the previous two seasons. There’s so much more depth and complexity to the characters, and the story is so beautiful and so tragic (seriously, have tissues handy). Looking forward to the rest of your reactions

I think the reason for that is because they didn't have a book to follow so Shonda probably wrote a lot more of the story.

I literally just finished the series and I come here and you guys post this!!! The series made me emotional. Episode 6 was everything. I cried like a baby and that's all I can say because I don't how far you guys are in the series.

I lost track of how many things Zuff got wrong and how many characters he forgot. LOL

It was her grand-daughter and granddaughter’s baby that died. Her son(george IV) named after her husband (king George III) was the one she was consoling that was crying next to the casket. He is the father of the pregnant princess that died. She was the only legitimate grandchild. Charlotte wanted more legitimate grandkids so their line of succession would be secure for next gen after her son George

You see, King George III and Queen Charlotte had 15 children overall, but only 13 survived to adulthood, as two of their sons died at a young age. The granddaughter of the King and Queen was Princess Charlotte, the only daughter of Prince George(King George III and Queen Charlotte’s eldest son and heir)and Princess Caroline, his actual wife. By the way, King George’s mother is named Dowager Princess Augusta. She’s played by Michelle Fairley, the same actress who played Catelyn Stark from GOT like you said earlier.

I’ve already binged the whole season. I loved it! The story of Charlotte and George is so unique. There’s quite a few characters that y’all like that are in this season. So happy y’all have started this!

George is being genuine in the garden but also at the end there cause yeah, he is a nice charming dude, but that doesn't change the way the whole marriage situation is sus. Charlotte stays because of what she sees in George, but in the end she is still basically marrying into a chess game: she's somewhat aware she was chosen to be a pawn in whatever the monarchy is doing, and worst part is that what bothered her in the beginning is clearly still happening and is going to keep happening, her questions are still not being answered, now not just by the palace in general but also by George. It sets the scene very nicely though, we can see George is nice (or at least has a nice side) but also see the flaws and conflicts that he will hopefully overcome

I watched everything in a day and I loved it. You guys are my favorite reactors, so I'm hyped.

Royal (Mecklenburg-Strelitz was only a Dukedom but she was still a princess). 4. Family connections, she was a distant cousin of George's mother Augusta.

The inspection of Charlotte by Queen Augusta is really a statement about race more than anything. Its reflective of the slave auctions, where they were checked by buyers, whether it be if they could birth more slaves or if they were in good health, by checking their body and teeth, etc. Her wiping her face was to see if she was wearing makeup or dirty. A wild notion that was and unfortunately is still believed by some ignorant people about brown skin. The princess was hoping Charlotte wouldnt be as dark as she seemed. Thats why Charlotte was hidden before the wedding, so no one could argue it prior. Thus the blending of the courts. And why Lady Danbury made the face she did when she first saw Charlotte. She realized the only reason the courts mixed is because they couldn't whitewash the new queen and it was too late to change it.

Lol it’s so confusing on who it was that died this episode. The grown woman who died was Queen C’s granddaughter (her son’s daughter) and the baby would have been her great-grandchild. Idk why they phrased it in such a confusing way 😅
