In the defense of the gaming community, we hate poorly written, obnoxious, or female characters made with an obvious political bias or agenda. If she’s well written we’ll love her just as much as any male character.

Problem is people only notice politics when it's something they don't agree with. Games were already political when protagonists were almost 100% male. Art in general is best when it has a stance. That is not to say I agree with all these big studios that go to Disney route of pseudo woke token representation

I feel like a lot of people apply previous experiences and biases towards new characters. It becomes a self fulfilling prophecy of hate towards characters for minor issues.

And even if the characters were created for political bias or agenda reasons. They can be very likable when they are well written and the message doesn't shove it down to your throat.

@@maeschder Eh, idk if I agree they were political to the same extent. Those old games never felt as heavy handed or lecturing compared to some new ones. A subtle message vs an obvious and forced one.

The old GOW games have always had a story, the gameplay was simply the main focus. There are several moments sprinkled throughout the games of Kratos showing emotions other than anger. He has always had feelings such as regret, self loathing, sorrow and even love for his family. Those feelings were buried under his anger and hate for the gods and himself.

Anyone else remember the original plot line for the first 3 games? Shit was hilarious.

To give context on QuantumTV for those who don't know. He basically played the game for like 10 mins or something and gave it a really bad review calling it shit. People, obviously, clowned on him for this take and his response to was to call everyone who disagreed with him losers with no life and to game end themselves. Cue the long drama of him abusing KZread's copyright system on every KZreadr who clowned on his dumb take and him retaliating to the point where he literally called The Actman's mother IRL to threaten "legal action" for "harassing" him. He uploaded a video of him talking to his mother. Shit was wild and Quantum is insane.

And he's doing it thrice. Fortunately, Notch and another person helped him in paying the first trial and his gofundme is doing well in pooling money for going through his 2nd and 3rd. If all goes well after the trial, Charlie is planning to help Karl in countersuing Billy because he wants to see him get screwed over

It sad that all the memes have convinced people that the old GoW game had no story. Yes, they were more slice-n-dice focused than the new ones, but they still had a great story, that's why people love it so much.

Best example: we hated Samus’ character in Metroid: Other M. We thought Samus in Metroid Dread was one of the coolest characters ever made. Same character, different writing and direction. Makes a huge difference :)

well most probable answer in regards to people who are hating on Elden Ring, I mean actively shitting on it , those people are either on crack or were dropped on their heads.. or both. Like there were unique examples of shitflakes ignoring trailers and news about Elden ring, expecting it to be a mix of Skyrim and Witcher and when it wasn't getting buthurt over it. Like SERIOUSLY?? Elden Ring is far from perfect and some people may not like it. I totally understand. BUT it is an Objectively extremely well made game, That is not a subjective opinion. Factual quality of Elden Ring is very very high. And if somebody criticizes game for subjective reasons, I have a question to that person. 'If you dislike this game, why are you wasting your life complaining about it, instead of spending time on things you enjoy?''

@@wolfsbane501st3 My main issues with Other M were some of the writing and direction. I replayed it recently and overall they did more things right than wrong with the game but it's just that people really took exception to the things they got wrong. Most people obviously had other expectations of Samus and her portrayal but I honestly expected her to be socially awkward, damaged, emotionally stunted and talk like she's got Aspergers kinda like Chloe O'Brien in 24, which she kinda did in the game, but she got instructed to talk like that because the director thought it sounded cool so it came across more fake most of the time. Apart from some of her writing and how short she is, she was pretty close to how I expected her to be. I know it's an unpopular opinion but I never found Other M to be as bad as everyone said it was. In fact, most of it is pretty fun. Saying this as someone who replayed it just before Christmas.

I don’t hug Fia because “oh, woman, must touch!” I do it because if I’m having trouble fighting these enemies, I could imagine my own character is freaking shell shocked from having to do it over and over, dying endlessly. He’s not slumped over crying because it’s a woman actually touching him, he’s slumped over and crying because someone (ANYONE) is willing to give reprieve from the nightmare outside the round table hold and actually understand the pain of it. Because let’s face it, do you really expect White Mask “You Are Maidenless” Varre to do anything but laugh at you? Or Patches to listen to you, only to boink you off a cliff, hooting and hollering?

2:13 With that I disagree, there is a lore, most of it is backstory but there is still in game lore After dying they could just say Kratos got out of the underworld, but they implemented it into the story for example As well as the reason for his chalk like complexion being the ashes of his family that were killed by him while being controlled There is a dark story about revenge on the old games And a story about moving on and helping the next generation not to end up making the same mistakes

Yes! Ive replied to other comments about that already, im not the best at explaining but what i mean is the new game has a lot more talk between characters and stuff to build up the story. Ive only watched gameplays of the new one as i prefered the older games more! 💜💜

@@erinyabucky that is indeed true, these games do build up more of the lore, his change from a father too deep into his works ending up not being able to be with family, only to get "rewarded" for his services with a curse As he completed his revenge he decided to find a new reason to survive, and now he has a kid he can teach what he had learned

the OG God of War games had a lot of story, it just wasn't emphasized anywhere near as heavy-handedly as 18 and 22 do. Unfortunately, "angry god slayer man" is all anybody seems to remember

People are still falling for the idea that old God of War games had no story or lore and that Kratos wasn't an interesting character. Goddamn, it's true that the last God of War games had way more dialogue and cutscenes, way more opportunities for the player to get to know Kratos from various angles... But Kratos always had motivations, allies, enemies, grudges, pseudo-allies, there were always choices he made, and those he didn't he still reacted to them and was affected by them. You didn't get twenty lines of dedicated dialogue plus two cutscenes to understand it... But it was there.

I have played older god of war games and i did like them for that. What i tried to say is that the new games are more focused on the talk while the older games were not which i prefered. I think i just used the wrong word as im not a native english speaker and i am thinking it in another language 😭

Kratos becomes the enraged crazy man going around killing for revenge after GOW 1. During GOW 1 he pretty much has PTSD, depression and can't even sleep because of the nightmares from killing his family. He also tries to "convince" some of his opponents not to fight him in GOW 2 (Theseus) and 3 (Hercules) , although he doesn't try that hard, and he speaks with a lot of respect towards the gods in GOW 1. The notion that Kratos is a monster running loose only becomes true in GOW 3 where he destroys the world one god at a time. He was treated as a hero who became a monster and the trilogy shows it. From Spartan General to the Ghost of Sparta, tragic hero to destroyer of the world, human to monster. That's a whole journey and a good story. Most of what his character is was in the older games already. God of war 2018 and Ragnarok just has a more obvious way of telling its story, people just think revenge and anger when they think Kratos because that's what got stuck in their minds, the I care for my family part was there, the regret he displays now was there in GOW 1, it got clouded by revenge in GOW 2 and came back after GOW 3 when he destroyed the world. Kratos never even hated the gods either, just Ares (though he never sought revenge until tasked to kill him) and Zeus (the only one he really wanted to kill and had to slaughter many gods to do it causing the end of the world) he even spared Aphrodite and was not interested in killing, Hermes, the gods that got in the way were just collateral damage and by that point Kratos was so far gone that he didn't care about anything but revenge.

the only woman i met that was helpless was the blind lady in the weeping penicula that gives you a letter that i am convinced is blank

I subscribe to the idea "There is no victory, only survival." with Elden Ring. Especially Elden Ring.

I'm happy to have found you, madam. It's refreshing to hear about a normal woman sharing her thoughts on this stuff. Also, no offence to you at all. Your character looks strange. "there is no way someone thinks that way" trust me, NEVER underestimate how low Polygon can go. How they still have an audience has and always will confuse me.

So Mr T.V. is a guy who played elden ring and had a poor experience. He made a "review" saying it was a bad game based on his limited experience and attacked the fan base because of a number of bad interactions that may or may not have been cause by the more toxic members of the fan base. His review was near universally panned and openly mocked by other content creators due to him being unable to accurate sum up any legitimate criticism, and mostly lambasting the game for not having an easy mode. To these "mocking analysis videos" posted by other KZread creators, using references from his videos to create presentations to mock or address his opinions, he launched a wave of copyright strikes on their channels for referencing his videos. Concerning the souls fan base, I maintain that those toxic individuals are a vocal minority. However, they put off a lot of newcomers and have given the souls community a bad reputation. Mr T.V. uses the criticism of his review to double down on his opinion that many vocally disagree with due to his lack of actual evidence or factual data. In the process he attacks the "entire" fan base as people, and then says elden ring will never be a good game. In his attacks he compares the souls fan base to "abuse victims" and actively tells them to kill themselves which predictably causes massive backlash. There is more to this story but it's better not to pay him any attention. *edited for punctuation

The thing about the older God of War games is, while the combat was always good, I did not like Kratos as a character, at least from God of War 2 onward. Why? Real simple: Everything bad that happens to him is his own damn fault, but he shifts the blame to others, first to Ares, and then to Zeus. God of War 1 saw Kratos sicced on Ares because Ares was invading other gods' territory, killing their followers, taking their cities, etc. God of War 2 opens with Kratos doing the EXACT SAME THING. So when Zeus comes down and is like "Nah, this ain't happenin'" and Kratos swears revenge on him, are we really supposed to be on Kratos' side? And even then, go back to God of War 1 again, and Kratos' wife and daughter dying was again his fault, because he sold his soul to Ares in the first place. And in God of War 3, a lot of things Kratos does, especially the boss kills, just feel cruel for the sake of cruelty. To be fair, I've changed in my gaming tastes since then as well, and I'm actually a lot more interested in villain protagonist types of games these days, so if I were to play them them again now, and look at them as Kratos being the actual villain of the story, I'd probably like them a lot more.

This is why as a gaming community we need to completely get rid of the gaming major media journalists.

@@erinyabucky I'd recomend getting the remake if you can, has a few changes compared to the original that are VERY helpful. Its hard to explain what those differences are, but the best way I can put it is that it would make the original a pain by comparison.

This is such a great video and you have an adorable voice. As for Kratos and I understand what you're saying, however yeah all three games is just going to focus on him being rageful. He was used, watch his family be killed and have their dusted skin stuck on him. So the story is about him getting revenge. Knowing about being rageful and being hateful, it takes over you. Leaving no room for anything else.

I am still on my first playthrough of elden ring.

@@erinyabucky Yeah its pretty insane, and if your wondering what dungeon it is I have aded to the bullcrap dungeon list, its the Impalers Catacombs, at the boss battle at the end of the dungeon, you have to fight one of those wierd statue things AND at least four or five imps, the little gargoyle statue things, this is unfair because these things are deceptively strong, and can easily stagger you and cause bleed, and since poise is pretty much non-existant. What is even more unfair is that this is considered an early game dungeon, so you won't have much in terms of good gear, heck even summons were not much help since even those kept getting staggered, so I have just turned around and left it alone and plan to return when I have some strong enough gear, stats and summons to both survive, and beat the snot out of the boss and its imp minions. This is one of those things that shows why a lot of people hate boss fights were the boss has minions with them.

Now if they were complaining about Ranni or Melina, maybe I’d understand to some point, but you literally can’t complain about Melania unless it’s about how hard she -makes me- is

To play devil advocate to the people who hate on the game just because it have a female protag, in the past decade more and more franchises (be it games, tv shows, cartoons, comics) have started getting into the woke trend, which inevitably produced preachy or straight up terribly written characters. Needless to say, a lot of people have developed a kind of gag reflect for it after being hurt repeatedly. They lost trust with these western media. Admittedly I am somewhat guilty of it too, having been disappointed many times. Whenever a new game/comic/show start shifting the spotlight to a female protag, my eyes narrow and part of my mind wonder "Are they going woke?" I don't like how I reacted, but it is automatic now. I would of course reserve the benefit of the doubt and withheld judgment until I know for sure, but I understand why these bad takes came about.

same, I have developed a gag reflex as well, and in the past I was pretty much "anti-women", at least when it was an established franchise that had complex and strong male heroes before that. now I still have it, but I wait for the game, movie or whatever media it is to release and wait for the reception. I mean one of my favorite games that came out 2022 (I played it in 2023) was Signalis, which had a female protagonist and on top of that, it also had a lesbian relationship that you could say was a important part of the story. but there's also a difference between Signalis and other productions from the west. Signalis is a beautiful survival horror game, that has a unqiue art direction, compelling character driven story, great and intruiging lore as well, and an eldritch/lovecraftian element. It should have been at least nominated for GOTY, that's how good it is imo.

8:35 polygon's article makes even less sense when you remember Malenia's weapon of choice is a fairly unique and versatile one that makes full use of the mechanical parts of her body, and that she has a second phase that completes it all with moves utilizing her unique abilities with scarlet rot in ways never used again in the whole damn game. How is that unimaginative? No clue

Games are only for kids... tell that my father back in the day who was in his 50s and pretty much speed ran resident evil 1-3 whenever he felt like it cause it was fun for him. he would tell you another story.

[SPOILERS AHEAD FOR ELDEN RING ENDGAME] The first time I fought Malenia I thought she was Millicent and honestly I find Malenia the most interesting lore wise she waits at Miquellas haligtree for his return so that he can complete the mission he set out to complete only to find out that he had stolen by Mogwyn and is basically in a coma/deadlike state when fighting Mogwyn. Malenia acts as the mother figure and protector to miquella since he is forever cursed to eternal youth just as Malenia is cursed with scarlet rot

Literally every boss in Elden Ring is cursed and if you value storytelling and lore you know that every boss has a curse to bear even when starting the game in the intro cutscene you see the introduction to each major boss 1. Margit the fell omen- born with a disease that made him an outcast 2. Godrick the grafted- succumbed to grafting so he could become a “better fighter” 3. Radahn the star scourge- doomed to eternally wander and feed on the corpses of those who where once allies after a battle with Malenia 4. Rennala- lost one of her children and her hursband to Marika is now obsessed with rebirth 5. Rykard- lost sight of grace and became a vassal to the god devouring world serpent 6. Morgott- became the protector to the Erdtree and as a final mercy had his omen curse lifted from him 7. Fire Giant- cursed by Marika to be the last protector of the flame 8. It's a purely personal thing, but if the game is a very heavily story based game I tend to not play them if the MC is a woman. It's just because I feel more connected to the character if it's a men since I'm a men too. But if it's a game like hades or a fps game I just don't care since the character is basically just the equivalent of a skin for you to act with.

For the Woman who hate Man und Man who hate woman thing in the internet Community, i explain it like this. After Men and Woman fight for really important things in the real world, many woman who really hate men and many men who really hate woman, think it is not enough until the other side has nothing for themself anymore. so this two extremist groups fight each other and get bigger and bigger because anyone who came in direct contact with them must chose one side or get threads and hate from the side they not have chosen. even when you dont want to be on one of the two side you get hate by both of them. they take their with to the politics, to games,to music,to movies and so on and every real problem that is solved by an man or an woman, the groups will use it to say its because they are part of their group.......... sounds childish but in the country's where the real problem about men and woman get really less they fight over problems that only rich country citizens can have. its funny for sane people BUT Media and even Game or movie makers want to get the extremist groups on their side to profit from them. because extremist are the loudest media and media producers think, they need their clicks,vies and attention to sell more..... the normal sane definition of feminism,woke or equality gets broken,mixed with bad things or even watered down in this process and real problems that exist in countrys outside of this groups cant really be heard because of this, because now when people think about specific good things and their lable in their mind they see only the members of the extremist group. that is one reason why the woman in iran, that fight for their rights are not really heard from the masses in the internet because people with no real problems use the same labels as them and the masses ignoring the labels because of this. I did like the older GOW games more too , when i say no story i mean its not that lore based with a lot of talk etc as the newer one. Its hard to explain sometimes xD

@@erinyabucky I think I know what you mean. ^^' I think the new GOW games have a slightly better flashed out world and tackle MORE character centric stuff with your characters. I always see it like this: In the old GOW games the fighting and the gore aspectes (& puzzles) were prioritised and the story moments played kind off a passive role. The new GOW games prioritised story moments and the brutal fights & finishers take a bit of a backseat.

In the first GOW game from 2005, the cutscenes could surprise players showing Kratos more vulnerable and emotional sides, while on the other hand the newer games can surprise players in it its combat, reminding the player that, even after Kratos has changed and became more opned up, he's still able to be as brutal as he was back in Greece.

The gaming community is pretty consistent, but like anything else, there is a loud minority making a lotta noise. I don't put stock into anything they say because games are not made for political activists (on both sides), but for people looking to be entertained or give an escape. You are right tho, not looking at what character's gender is, but who they are as person is what to do. Tho if the character falls flat and gender was what the writers were banking on, with a subpar story, then imma feel let down.

Elden Ring is not (necessarily) a game that demands a lot of free time. Experienced players can beat it in 10 minutes, while new players beat the Tree Sentinel in an hour. It depends on your skill, not your build (exclusively). He can't be calling himself out, considering he doesn't sound like he met Margit.

is not about is it a man or a woman the protagonist isn't the problem, that's what the Devs use to gaslight to try to avoid to say the real issue with the game and how little they really care about the game the universe the writting and the people who play the game, given the option pick to play as female or male playes pick most of the time so let's stop this of gamers don't like female protagonist because thats not the problem it's about what's going on with the devs and the force of politics and not even caring about their own games universe at all or even the players who play the game, the entire thing is really toxic you can see devs saying blaming and insulting gamers all the time, sure you can say that there is a small group of gamers that are toxic but so what that's literally the real world not everybody is good but we don't throw the entire group into the flames just because a few are bad, but for some reason the industry of gaming haves little to no care at all about the people who buy the products and when somebody does a good game like Elden ring you can see the toxics LITREALY Devs working on games insulting Elden Ring, because Devs are so disconnected from what gamers actually want that they just can't understand when a game is just made to let people have a time to relax and have fun after a hard day at work...

Its a game you dont need to include no one because is fantasy just do a game full of black or white characters (I dont care) if this helps the game go ahead the problem is when they want to force the inclusion and that just ruins the game, like on a game they included a gay character that the game keeps saying is awesome because he is gay

As an Xbox player even I thought Elden Ring was a fantastic game! God of War Ragnarok was fantastic and there is no reason to get into what is better etc. Also I play Destiny 2 which does take a lot of time to play and even I have a job and responsibilities. People confuse me.

A few things I disagree with: 1) GOW always had story, it was just a game first; 2) If you have to work to make a game easier, it isn't an easy mode, and beating Radahn and knowing where to go to get Mimic Tear isn't easy anyway.

It did have a story what i meant to say but used the wrong word i guess is that the newer games have a lot more talk and stuff. But I prefer the older ones over the new ones! I accidentally found out about the mimic tear its true xD I saw a video of someone having a mimic and i checked my inventory and it was there, i guess ilooted it from somewhere. Before that i just used other summons! xD

I don't mind a female protag, what bothers me is how they're written, because normally playing a game people love to fantasize with self-inserts, imagining you are the character and sometimes for some people playing the opposite sex is just not for them, especially if it's written piss poor.

Most nowadays get overly emotional it seems. Most of my characters in Fallout new Vegas and Fallout 4 are female and bi or les, and they dont even hate men. To me Nora is a good template to show how you can move on regardless of what life was like before. Nate's gone and she's decided to try and move on.
