Euro NCAP Crash Test of Volvo V60 2018

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Euro NCAP performs a series of crash tests on each model tested:
- a frontal impact test, the car impacts a rigid barrier
- an offset frontal impact test, 40% of the width of the car is striking a deformable barrier
- a pole test, the tested car is propelled sideways into a rigid pole
- a side impact test, a mobile deformable barrier impacts the driver's door
A series of pedestrian tests are conducted with different impactors, adult and child head form, lower and upper leg form and whiplash tests are performed on a sled.
Active safety is tested based on the car’s equipment: autonomous emergency braking systems (car to car, with a pedestrian and a cyclist target), lane support and speed assist technologies and seatbelt reminders.
The Volvo S60 is a saloon version of the V60 estate. Euro NCAP has verified that the results of the S60 are as good or better than those of the V60. Accordingly, the rating presented here is based on the assessment of the Volvo V60.

“What this doesn't show, however, is the volvo SIPS system (side impact protection system). The seat are mounted on large supports running through it that rest against the trans tunnel, in a bad side collision like this all that force is transferred through those and the center tunnel collapses instead of the seat. So as far as occupant safety goes, both these would result in pretty much the same outcome unless the volvo driver was very large and didn't fit in the seat” Taken from u/avboden on Reddit, on a post about how the S60 does worse than the Model 3 on side impacts

Not only front but also side airbag is enough to protect us and it works well. If it's not Volvo but Japanese car, people at rear seats will probably die. Radar brake works as well as Subaru's Eyesight,or better than that. Car insurance of Volvo is a little expensive, but its performance is so good. If we buy cars,we must check side airbag all of the first.

No, the protection is good or adequate. Read the report on the EuroNCAP website: "The passenger compartment of the V60 remained stable in the frontal offset test. Dummy readings indicated good protection of the knees and femurs of the driver and passenger. Volvo showed that a similar level of protection would be provided to occupants of different sizes and to those sitting in different positions. In the full-width rigid barrier test, protection of the neck and chest was adequate for the rear passenger, and protection of other critical body areas was good. For the driver, protection was good for all critical body regions. In both the side barrier impact and the more severe side pole test, protection of critical parts of the body was good or adequate. Tests on the front seats and head restraints demonstrated good protection against whiplash injuries in the event of a rear-end collision. A geometric assessment of the rear seats also indicated good whiplash protection. The standard-fit autonomous emergency braking system performed well in tests of its functionality at the low speeds, typical of city driving, at which many whiplash injuries are caused. "

What is worse, they give electronic aids too much emphasis. Good, solid performers have been downgraded to 3 stars or less, because the lack of electronic aids. And some dubious performers 5 stars, because the aids keep lanes or similar b.s.

The idea of that isn't to prevent damage to the car, but trauma to the occupants. The more time you use to dissipate the energy of a crash, the softer the lateral forces on the body. That becomes critical when it comes to lateral impact, because our bodies are built for learning forwards with limited ability to learn backwards and sideways.
