Why are Volvo safe, watch this - Volvo Cars Safety Centre

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This Is why Volvo is the safest car, watch this Volvo Cars Safety Centre
On average, it crashes at least one brand new Volvo a day. And it has been instrumental in preserving Volvo Cars’ position as a leader in automotive safety to this very day.
This year, the Volvo Cars Safety Centre crash lab celebrates its 20th anniversary. At the time of its opening by the Swedish king, in 2000, it was one of the most advanced crash labs in the world and in many ways it still is today.
To this very day it helps Volvo Cars engineers to push the envelope in safety and to learn from real-life traffic accidents, as the company aims for a future in which no one is killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo.
“Being committed to safety is not about passing a test or getting a safety rating,” said Thomas Broberg, one of Volvo Cars’ leading safety engineers and a two-decade company veteran. “Our commitment to safety is about finding out how and why accidents and injuries occur and then developing the technology to help prevent them. We hope our pioneering work will inspire others to follow, our ambition to reduce road traffic casualties world wide.”
The Volvo Cars Safety Centre crash lab is a multifunctional facility that allows Volvo Cars safety engineers to recreate countless traffic situations and accidents, and perform tests that go beyond regulatory requirements.
The lab contains two test tracks of 108 and 154 metres long respectively. The shorter of the two is moveable and can be positioned at an angle between 0 and 90 degrees, allowing for crash test at different angles and speeds, or to simulate a crash between two moving cars. Cars can be crashed at speeds up to 120 km/h.
Outside, there is room for performing tests like roll-over crashes and run-off road scenarios, whereby cars are launched into a ditch at high speeds. Here, Volvo Cars also offers rescue services opportunities to hone their life-saving skills, as it did earlier this year when it dropped new Volvos from a height of 30 metres to simulate the heavy damage found in extreme crash scenarios.
Inside the main hall, an enormous crash barrier is used for testing various frontal, rear and side impacts. Weighing an astonishing 850 tonnes, it can be moved around if needed with the help of air cushions.
Additionally, there are around two dozen other fixed and movable barriers that are used in crash testing, including a moose-like structure to simulate crashes involving these animals.
During crashes, the car, the crash test dummies and the barriers are fitted with sensors that allow Volvo Cars engineers to register the entire chain of events in detail. Dozens of ultra-high definition cameras also film the crash test from every angle imaginable.
Before a physical crash test, the car model in question has already gone through thousands of computer simulated crash tests. All the data generated by these test is then used by Volvo’s engineers to develop safer cars.
As the company moves towards an all-electric future, the Safety Centre has in recent years been equipped and prepared specifically to safely execute electric car crash tests as well.
“No matter what the scenario, we can recreate it here at the Volvo Cars Safety Centre and analyse it in detail,” said Thomas Broberg. “For me it is very inspiring to realise that for every hour of testing and analysis we put in, we get closer and closer to our ambition that no one should be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo.”

There is an OEM repair procedure available for rocker damage this includes repairing it with OEM approved tools such as spotwelders, applicable glues, etc. My personal rule of thumb. If the car has no inner rocker damage it’s ok to be repaired. Any types of floor creases or inner rocker damage is a severe no go. I have no doubt it will be as safe as before

@@horvath14041984 that's really interesting and thank you for explaining as it makes sense. I had a 2004 V70 D5 and about 2 years ago I had an accident as I rear ended a Nissan Juke who had stalled its engine leaving a roundabout at about 20 mph or 35 km/h. Airbags went of as did the belt tensioners. Had a cracked windscreen and some plastic at the and car was drivable but as the repair would've been more expensive than what it was worth the insurance deemed it unfixable. However, with your example above, had it been a newer V70 it would most likely have been repaired. Thank you again for your info. 👍

@@VinDieselS70 it actually depends on the coutry you are in and how the Insurance works. I noticed in America and Europe at least a lot of cars are written off or totalled by a minor bump etc. While in countries like Malaysia where I'm at, labour and parts are cheap, so most damages that can be fixed will be fixed up by body shops authorised by the Insurance. While newer cars would be fixed by the dealers as part of their warranty.

I will drive nothing else than a Volvo as safety is the most important thing and the ethos of Volvo is based around maximum safety for the people inside their cars. Not only are their cars the safest, they are also in my view the most comfortable and well designed inside. All the car reviews one sees online just focus on speed, cornering etc, top speed etc., and never mention safety, which is a really puzzling thing. Some of the US brands (incl. Tesla) are trying hard to boast safety - particularly in view of the self-driving trend - but the US cars are completely hopeless and don't even come close to Volvo on safety. Volvo puts safety above achieving maximum profits, while other brands merely create the illusion of safety.

When I test drove a VW Taureg and went to BMW sytner showroom for the X7 and said " Do you use Boron Steel like Volvo? It's 5 times stronger than normal steel in cars", the sales men at BMW and VW panicked and avoided the question. Without knowing it they also answered the question. I bought the Volvo XC90. Not a driver goes by in a X5 or X7 or Taureg they stop to look at the XC90 and the look on their faces says everything "I wish I had that". Many repairers have said volvo metals are a lot harder and take a lot longer to repair. I got hit on passenger side in my 2010 xc60 by an mitsubishi suv outlander doing about 70 kmh. Damaged the passenger door, front left guard, and left front wheel was bent. The amazing thing was the left front was still able to open as normal. There was no intrusion into the passenger area. The other car looked like it had hit a pole. Both cars were written off. Have my 2nd xc60 now, my brothers on his 2nd xc90 and mum in her 80s still driving a 240gle. If you are considering safety as priority and a new volvo is out of budget should consider a 2nd hand late model.

Volvo puts on the 1st line only life tested values. I love Volvo for their philosophy of crafting super everyday cars. The day I got my 1st new Volvo was one of my best days in my life. I was driving many cars but Volvo is supersolid.

Volvo was always equal to a tank. I am 56 and I remember in my teens all those older models built like a tank. I love the XC90, but I am worried buying one due to issues with electronics and with the touch screen. Not sure if it was ever addressed. Its a shame that they are so expensive. I am not surprised. Volvo these days have a big challenge, competing with the Chinese automakers.

Even before seeing this my decision is made to get a Volvo as my next car. Still recovering from being T-boned while doing 30mph in a Vorsprung edition Audi, 6mnths old and now it's been declared a write off. As well as the physical injury, I've also taken a knock in confidence, there was nothing I could do, no braking or change of direction. That car had every safety option on it, but getting whacked in the side by a SUV made me realise the importance of side impact protection. So it's a Volvo for me when I get back on the road.

Any possibility Volvo can work on bolstering the safety in the event of the side-impact crash on the driver's side? I was unfortunately on the receiving end of that (of a maniac that completely disregarded the rules of the road), and, although i walked away, i am still dealing with some significant fallout over six [6] months later. What also immensely concerns me now, in addition to having to put up with the Hummers on the road, we will soon have Tesla's Cybertruck which looks like it belongs on the battlefield. Perhaps Volvo can look into creating their vehicles with an even stronger safety cage to compensate for whatever impact that monstrosity will have. I wonder if Congress will seek to issue legislation limiting the "Cybertruck" as an impact with that thing (from what i've seen in preliminary crash data) looks ghastly to say the least....
