Episode 11 - The Abusive Chronograph
The Chronograph complication is, to most of us, just a stopwatch. Second to a date indicator, the Chronograph is the next most popular complication, and nearly every watch manufacturer makes one - or do they? As we learn in this episode, the Chronograph is not only the most "abusive" complication, in terms of being harsh on the watch to use, but also one of the most complex complications, so much so that many of Switzerland's top watchmakers use Chronograph movements based on the same few designs. In this episode we look at all the major varieties of Chrongraphs, from entry-level Swiss brands like Baume and Mercier and BVLGARI, to the haute horological brilliance of in-house designs such as the $78,000 (on sale at C&C for just $43,000!) A. Lange & Sohne Datograph.

Such a great podcast. Really enjoying it.
Carl, the Datograph is a Flyback. You don't have to stop the chrono in order to reset it. You can reset it to zero on the fly.
What an amazing, fun way to learn about Chronographs!
Thank you Matt for this awesome idea!
Love this podcast, great information and entertainment for enthusiasts
Great content. I grew up sitting next to my grandfather who was a watchmaker watching him work and I'm sorry that he never taught me the art and skill of it. Brings back memories. Anyway, you have to get the technical stuff worked out for the watch-cam. It's frustrating to watch. There must be a jewelry photographer near you who can set you up properly. Cheers.
I am really loving the new podcast. I am really geeking out over this stuff. I like the idea of a precious metals episode but maybe expand it to different materials and finishes. There are so many cool and unique new materials being used in some of these new watches, that I think you could do a really good episode.
Love your podcasts guys keep the good work really informative would love if you guys make videos about finishing techniques of a watch like on dial and on movement
Another great episode. I'm currently looking into my next step up in watch and I am looking into a Valjoux 7754 Tissot Courtier Chronograph. It's no Omega but it's nice to know that it technically will share similar guts to it and be my nicest watch yet. Not that I think I'll ever dislike my Seiko's.
I've watched most of the episodes, learned a lot and enjoyed them all. Every now and then Cameron will start diving into a topic, meanwhile something will pop into Matt's head and Matt will blurt out a question which will change the subject. I'm thinking "wait, what about that other thing." I don't suggest changing your interaction, I think it works. However I think it would be great to do an episode where you go through to bookmark every time Cameron is cut short with a story or explanation from previous episodes, then he is given the opportunity to finish the thought on those subjects.

Actually, I think Matt should try to dial it back a notch. Great show! My favorite, by far. But when I find myself saying, out loud, "STFU, Matt", it's too much.

I don't want matt to change, he's great! Maybe Cameron could be more assertive when he has a point to finish? Fantastic show guys, I'm learning so much! (I realize I'm commenting on ancient history here...)

Although, I dig the "watchmaker zen" of cameron. That wouldn't survive if he started verbally wrestling matt for audio space...
guys your show is just awesome
Great content guy's.
A Sea-gull 1963 column wheel chronograph history would be great for us lower mortals.
You might want to note that the cost of service of a rattrapante chrono is something like 2 or 3 times the cost of servicing a std chrono.
Do an episode on pilot watches!!
Lol. I don’t know what a Tachymeter is used for. Says the guy who is also into Cars! It’s for calculating speed while racing. Love all the shows. Keep up the great content!

Yes! I'd love a SEIKO episode.
Any opinion on a 1920 Dubois Et Fill chrono?
Will Weiss Watch Co. come out with a chronograph?
I love the show Love the natural conversation feel of what you guys do Please Please Please get a better camera for the close up shots
Reupload?
Hey Matt thanks for educating us on many things; would love your guys opinion on Philleip Chariol now Chariol. Btw where I live long from LA Farah's are ballers.
You could review the FC-760 / AL-760 in-house flyback chronograph, got mine for 1900$. Released 2017, seems robust and alot for the money.
Hmm 2 different podcasts ?One was esrlier...edit issues?
I love Chronos, I never use the feature, I just love how it looks. After seeing this video, I'll use the chrono even less. I have a Seiko Chrono from 1984 that I cherish.
You guys should have had a Speedmaster. I don't see how you can have a full episode dedicated to chronographs and not talk about arguably the most famous one in the world. I know you guys were showing a picture of a Cal. 861 near the beginning, but detailing the Speedy and the architecture of its Chrono would have been awesome. Plus, it single-handily saved the astronauts on Apollo 13.
Thank you both for this information and for the podcast itself. Fucking amazing stuff.
How much does a new hand cost? I have an Eterna that has the chrono hand that went wild (past 12). The watch is not that old. It has an ETA 2894.

from watching restoration guys, for the most part the tricky thing is that it is very hard to source individual pieces for these watches especially parts of the display, so you usually have to buy a donor watch that has the pieces you need and then swap them out.
Love the channel but... why the Monaco hate?
Extra extra bright lights on the detailing shots please.
that is a telemeter ...for distance from a heard sound; tachymeter is for speed over a timed distance.
I just have to ask because I'm new to this show, but how does a guy that doesnt know what a tachometer is get in a radio shoe about watches? I do appreciate the candor, though.
Yeah guys all seiko episode would be so dope
You should have gotten a macro lens :)
You can get a tuning fork watch that’ll do the same thing dial-wise as the Grand Seiko.
Some of the older Omegas had the module set up
Yes, to Seiko! With such a limited budget, my Seiko Sportura Chronograph is my prized possession and I always get great compliments about it.
More car analogies
As a watchmaker myself, I like you said Panerai where not watchmakers, but more a compani that came up with some ideas, and are assembling a beautiful watch, and marketing it, like it was pure gold, ''last bit my words'' some of there models are just overpriced, thats allways been my view of Panerai.

it's a cool aesthetic though, and for someone that often is recommending stuff to someone with giant wrists and hands, it's good linear move to sea dweller
Full stop: I am enough of a watch nerd to stare at the date window and watch it change over exactly at 12. I was pleased to see that my Omega is within a few seconds of midnight.
Zee-nith, or Zen-ith?
at 54:43... who needs a $5000 watch period? its such a ridiculous question
I guess a 3 minute intro is better than a 4 minute intro
I'm still waiting for a good a Lange bar in a rap song lol,
Glasshütte is pronounced “Glaass who ta,” more-or-less. Also Lange is pronounced “laang ah.” Deutsche Welle Magazin had a good article on the southern, eastern German Watch renaissance a few years ago...
It’s like when Homer Simpson was cooking a turkey in his Winnegebo...
That Datograph is my grail............gotta say the name right though its a soft A "lahnga' not an long A :)
GG WP ;)
Matt complaining about his fat wrists is as annoying as TGV complaining about his twig-like wrists.
Seiko mech quartz best reliable value for money. The Pagani Daytona.
Get Federico on the podcast!
The nazis lol what a better story
for a car guy, im surprised at how terrible your german pronunciation is

being into to German cars is usually the best exposure I can think of to how silly of a language it is.
first
Attention watch nerds who don't speak French: if you can't be bothered to learn the correct pronunciation (which is fine--not trying to tell you how to use your time), at least try to be less wrong. Blancpain is not pronounced "blonk-pon." A nearer approximation would be "blon-pan." See 3 min 30 sec mark here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/jJmsrJerksbTqMY.html
