EP 3 - THE CREATOR BRAND ARCHETYPE | How to create a brand that comes across as visionary innovator

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Creator brands are visionaries. They seem to exist to innovate. They are non-conformist to the extreme and always strive to come across as authentic. These brands wear this desire on their sleeve. Creator brands are often in the technology, marketing or design spaces, but this is not always the case.

Brilliant! Found the combination of archetype (70% ruler, 30% creator) It would be fantastic if you could teach us a little more about this aspect. Salute from Kolkata

Yes you can have archetypal mixes. In fact I routinely encourage people to look at combination percentages of archetypes.

I feel like I understand every archetype, except this one lol. The reason this is an issue for me is because I keep taking brand quizzes and every single time the results tell me I have the creator archetype. I’m a brand designer, and ironically I can define and design others brands, but I am consistently questioning my own brand identity. It’s funny lol. I really want to understand how to use my archetype to strengthen my brand voice, its just that for some reason this one doesn’t make sense for me.

Hey Alexus! Thank you for your comment. I totally get you. The Creator archetype can be confusing since it balances might with creativity. In your case, since you are a brand designer, the Creator might be a good fit. However, wether you are a Creator or something else is dependent on what archetype or combination of archetype your target audience are. You would have to create a highly detailed buyer persona and identify your audience's archetype and then decide what archetype you should be to align with your audience. I know this is a vague answer but hope it helps. - Mash

I had that at the beginning for a while. I was like "I get it" but I was also thinking "what does that look like?". So I ran a particular ad on Facebook (this was ages ago when I still used that platform) and I waited to see who would respond. And then I realised what was happening. The people who would be my "consumers" were all completely different and that's what made them the same. In their group or circle, they were the "different one". And that's what tied them together. So I discovered that "my people" are the ones who -- in a group of say...10 people -- are the "eccentric one". There is no 1 way to pinpoint them based on the usual demo and ethnographic factors. You have to give them tools to draw them out.

Just started watching your videos and am fascinated with the content! Amazing, detailed work! Do you do consultations? I'm a music artist with a creator archetype, and have many questions that may be too long for the comment section. Thank you for the information, Mash!

Hey Gordon - thank you for your kind words! Creator is a great archetype for a music artist. However, did you start with determining your audience archetype first and then yours? That way you can know if just the creator is enough or a combination of one or more other ones to ensure your brand message will be appealing. Yes, I do undertake consultations. Hi Mash, Let me start by saying a huge thank you for all your videos. As a graphic designer I find these really informative and great to just have on in the background when I'm working. My desk pad is full of mind maps from your videos, and I am slowly getting through them all, so thanks again! I wanted to ask your opinion on what archetype you think graphic designers target audiences might mainly consist of? I assume that as we often work on other peoples behalf we have a very wide target audience in general, and if one wants to they can hone in on one type or another. As I slowly branch out and start to get more and more freelance work in outside of office hours, I am considering what archetypes to attract/target. I know this may/will change depending on who I personally want to attach, but I am wondering if you had an opinion on who may be best to target from a business point of view? Any pointers or opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again, and I look forward to more of your videos. Cheers Rohan

Hi Rohan, I am glad you found my videos useful. By learning about building a brand, you will take your graphic design business to the next level and also add value to your clients. In terms of archetypes, I think you need to look at it from the opposite end. You do not seek out an archetype that is good for graphic design. Instead, you need to seek out your target audience first in terms of niche that you want to pursue. Once you have nailed down who your target audience is or whom you want to target for your services, you then analyze and understand what their archetype is. Based on their archetype you can then customize your brand archetype and your messaging to align with them. Hope that makes sense. - Mash

@@thenakedbrand hi Mash, this response was eye opening. Thank you. When it comes to identifying ur target audience archetype first, what if ur a new business with no customers, do you identify your target consumers based on the personality of people you’d like to work with? Or would I try to serve a target audience that’s most like my own archetype personality? Or neither lol. Thanks for your input!

Hi Venessa - The Creator’s main priority is to express their creativity. Compared to the Ruler, they are quite laid back. They love novelty and they love to create new combinations. The creator is clever, self-sufficient and they chafe at any sort of imposed conformity whereas the Magician is an innovator, creating remarkable things seemingly from thin air. They are masters of transformation, frequently reinventing themselves. They’re capable of turning a negative into a positive, but they can also do the reverse. Hope this helps! - Mash
