While integrating the cherished moments as forever a part of you rather than feeling pain about what seems to have been lost was and would not be retrieved. I also think that what is depicted here is a belief that somehow those moments-feelings-memories are transcendental. This is a gnostic movie.

This ending hits you strongly in the feels. The idea that David has constructed a 150 years worth of imagined fantasy with a girl he knew for 1 day in real life is chilling. And its very tragic when tech support tells David that once he woke up from the sidewalk he never saw Sofia again. The ending is absolutely bitter-sweet, which I guess is the whole theme of Vanilla Sky

Well he technically knew her for more than 1 day but he only knew her one day before his accident. He met her again after that at the dance studio and club. But it shows how someone is convinced they met their soulmate. You'd think his accident would make him worry more about recovery and not being obsessed over someone he barely knew. Had they made it that he knew her longer it would have made Sophia seem shallow for not wanting to be with him after the accident

Talk about criminally underrated movies. People ask me about movies and once in a while this movie pops up. Just to help the laymen wrap their minds on the concepts of the movie, I usually say, "It's Total Recall but they replaced the action for pain and sorrow." And I usually get a pretty bad response. "Why would anybody want to watch a movie like that?" Because strong emotions is one of the defining characteristics that shows the human condition. We are all interacting with each other in real time. But in reality we truly feel like we are in an island by ourselves. Sometimes we have to accept to leave things behind or otherwise we corrupt our cherish memories. At least that is what I got out of this movie. To this day, I still haven't leapt off my own building. Hopefully, one day I will (and no. Not suicide. Lol)

I saw this film for the first time when i was about 17 years old. From that moment this scene deeply resonated with me, for what reason I can't really say. There is something special about the idea of saying goodbye to everything and starting over. This is in a way what is happening here. It's a finality of some experience. The love, the hurt, the joy, the family, the friends, the everything wrapped into one moment. It's overwhelmingly beautiful and haunting. Life truly is a transcendent experience.

This movie takes watching it twice to really appreciate its beauty and craftsmanship. The first time around can be disappointing when a suspenseful thriller is suddenly interrupted by a full-blown sci-fi Deux ex Machina ending. The second time around; you are no longer distracted by the twist and can fully appreciate the beauty of the message of melancholy, heartache, choices and consequences, and love.

Something about this scene and song always touched something deep in my soul. Many years later in fact, when my dad passed away suddenly and I didn't get to say goodbye, I stopped by his gravestone before leaving to the airport never to return. I laid a rose on his gravestone and tilted my head towad the sky with my eyes closed and whispered to God "If he's up there, let him read my mind." And this whole scene suddenly flashed before my eyes. I pictures my dad young and in Heaven in front of me and I said "Look at us. I'm frozen (meaning paralyzed by grief and frozen in time since he died and blamed myself) and you're dead...and I love you." And he said "It's a problem." And tears ran down my cheeks as I laughed out loud. I said, "I lost you when I picked up that drink, and I'm sorry. Do you remember what you told me once? Every passing moment is another chance to turn it all around. I love you, Dad. I am going to turn it around." And left feeling like somehow I found some closure in a way I never expected and now this scene takes on a whole new meaning for me personally. It made a really rough thing to live through somewhat bearable. Leaping off that building is equivalent to how I felt starting my life over without my dad in the world anymore.

Idk why, it was so overpowering I couldn't help it. I think it's because of his ambition to want to be back with sophia, and his revelation in the end. Yes, the original's use of 'literalism' is much better. The character, Cesar, has a way of seeing things as they are and stating them clearly, even if it makes people uncomfortable. And clearly stating the poetry, irony and craziness of the situation and then making it clear that it doesn't matter, makes the moment that much more poignant.

One of my favorite little parts of this scene is when Sophia holds David's face in her hands, erasing his scars. I used to think it was just because it just made the story better. But earlier in the scene where David's life and eventual death is being explained, David falls over in his bathroom and dies. When David hits the ground, you see the demise of his real life “the crash,” and the camera then zooms in on his disfigured face. Ventura then tells David how Sophia was his “savior” and when she touches David she basically is bringing David back to life. Healing his face which was representing his death

Warren Smith I agree Vanilla Sky is a good movie, though there are many parallels to the movie Total Recall (1990 version) David Aames = Douglas Quaid Brian Shelby = Benny (The Cab Driver) Julie Gianni = Lori (Sharon Stone) Sofia Serrano = Melina Vilos Cohaagen = 7 Dwarves There are more similarities, Douglas Quaid originally was with Sharon Stone (a Blonde) just as David Aames was with Julie and both Quaid and Aames had a relationship with a Latina or Spanish afterwards. Brian Shelby most likely told Julie Gianni about the F-buddy comment, while Benny was "straight working" for Cohaagen. Serrano mentioned (jokingly) that she used to be an "arms dealer" similar to Melina. Both David Aames and Douglas Quaid were in some form of "lucid dream", Aames wore a mask to hide his scars while Quaid dressed up as an obese woman wearing a mask that could be used as an explosive. Both Quaid and Aames had many "girlfriends". Aames had a deformed face after the car accident, while Quiad, Melina, and Cohaagen all had their faces expand due to lower air pressure on Mars. Aames always had McCabe to keep an eye on him, while Quaid had Richter on his trail. Aames found out about cryogenic suspension via a commercial on TV while Quiad found out about Total Recall also via a TV commercial. Serrano said she would tell Aames something, in the next life when we are both "cats, cats, weowww", while Quaid was eating a candy bar in an abandoned cement factory surrounded by Rats, rats, thousands of rats, all red eyes! Arnold used a hologram to mislead Cohaagen's soldiers while he was at the Alien constructed air producing machine, while Aames had a hologram of John Coltrane at his birthday party. Also, there was mention of a party in both movies, Richter was going to see Arnold at the party and Aames had a party at his suite.

I think he understood he had to let her go because he had made a mistake that could not be fixed. Being with her implied being in a dream, and he had decided to confront a new reality. It is a movie about living a dream or the reality. Also, I think that all his imaginations also revealed he wanted to wake up, and that he was delaying his confrontation with reality.

This movie is written so brilliantly . Underrated by those that can’t grasp the concept or by those who don’t or haven’t understood lose or consequences yet . This is Romeo and Juliet with a modern twist ,but more then just a love story . It’s packed with all the things us humans feel . This ending scene with David over coming his fear to leave behind the woman he loves to know he will awaken to a world he does not know at all that’s completely Different from the current time of his death shows a man who is so brave to take the Leap of faith . Dying itself is scary ,but leaving the comfort zone his subconscious mind created is deep . One could say he could’ve lived out his life there even if it wasn’t real ,but I too would’ve made the choice to jump . What’s so tragic about this movie is finding a woman you know you will be in love with and I have always been a ladies man and finding that special girl among all the woman who wanted to be in David’s life just makes us as the viewer feel what he’s feeling . This movie has always had a way of taking my attention away from whatever I was doing and being completely drawn in . The soundtrack is amazing . The script is writing at its best and the acting is amazing . I first watched this movie and fell in love with it when I was 19 years old . I think what’s amazing is we’re literally entering into a age where we will be uploading our consciousness so they blended new age ideas that will come to pass with a wonderful story that touches the depths of our souls . I always loved the quote “ every passing moment is another chance to turn it all around “ . Love each day !. I know a bit about consequences and just like in David’s case some cannot be fixed . What I do know is we’re all one . We’re infinite . I am not religious. , but extremely spiritual . “ I think therefore i am “ is the easiest way to know we’re more then living and dying . What awaits us out in the unknown has always fascinated me ,but we cannot forget to appreciate the present . Life is so amazingly beautiful . When tragedy happens I always wonder why we need a yin an yang or a light and dark . We are a weird species . Capable of the most beautifulest creations and the most kindness acts ,but also for every action we do could be hurting another sorta like when David didn’t realize how in love Gianna who drove him and herself off the bridge was so in love and hurt while David was so happy The next day in life . Be happy for this moment . This moment is your life .

In the beginning, the voice that says "open your eyes" is Sofia's, but that's impossible because David hasn't met her yet. At the end, the voice sounds a lot like Julianna's. It introduces the possibility that even the part of his life that we're led to believe was real before he was frozen was itself a dream and that what we've watched is a dream within a dream.

This is exactly the conclusion I came to. The entire movie was a dream sequence within a wider dream. I'm pretty certain the movie Inception was heavily inspired by this. It's the same cliffhanger Nolan left the movie on

The voice at the end is credited as a different actress, the woman who played Lydia on Breaking Bad. If you listen closely you can hear her Scottish accent. I used to think it was Sophia but it's not.

Years ago I met a girl at the bars with some friends who was visiting from out of town. We hated each other at first but by the end of the night we clicked and went back to my place. We spent the entire night together. It wasn’t just physical but emotional in a way I cannot explain. It didn’t feel real and have yet to experience that level of intensity again. I genuinely believe what made that whole experience other worldly was the fact we were never able to replicate it due to living on a opposite sides of the world. The fantasy of not knowing what could’ve been can cripple you if you’re not careful. I am just grateful to have experienced that intense level of happiness but know it’s only a once in a lifetime experience. If heaven does exist I hope it’s a never ending state of that night with Maddie

The brilliance of this ending is Penelope Cruz character reaction during this entire exchange. She is just a projection of his mind. A dream almost. He loves her completely and with every fiber of his being. However, that love was never reciprocated from her. It was all a fantasy in his head. What he WISHES would happen. Hence why she doesn’t say “I love you too”. She cared for him obviously as a friend but did not love him nor want to be with him in a real relationship. He basically almost became obsessed and believed in his mind that her actions said that she was in love with him also. I’ve been going through this same exact situation with a woman who I love deeply but who has never reciprocated that love back to me. Because the love is only coming from one side. Mine. She cares about me but only wants friendship. I see this dynamic in the relationship between Penelope Cruz and Tom Cruise characters in this movie. Trust me, it’s heartbreaking for us who are in the Tom Cruise character mindset/fantasy world.

This is a very moving and beautiful scene for reasons all already stated in other comments. But also, this scene will always make me think of 9/11, and the state of the country when the movie originally came out. Not only because the WTC is in the background of this scene, and because the movie was released only a few months after. But also because there's a very calming tranquility to this scene. A moment of brief reflection before a life changing decision is made. Recognition of what was lost in David's life, and what he's learned from it. It's very sentimental and nostalgic. He's faced with a decision where he can continue living in the past and what was, or he can take a leap of faith and face the frightening unknown that is the future. I felt like our country faced a similar crossroads around this time. We were all still floored by the horrific attacks, we didn't want to let go, we didn't know how to move on. And we were afraid of what the future held. Looking back in 2017, I like to think we made the leap too.
