시놉시스: 영화는 감독이 2차 세계대전 참전 중 실종된 할아버지의 일기를 발견하면서 시작한다. 그의 전쟁 일기에는 지금은 상상조차 하기 힘든 동유럽 국가들의 연대가 담겨 있다. 감독은 할아버지의 일기를 따라 고인의 참전 장소를 따라가 보기로 한다. 아르메니아에서 조지아, 우크라이나, 러시아, 크림반도를 가로지르며 2차 세계대전 참전 생존자나 후예들을 만나 그들의 기억을 채집한다. 그렇게 영화는 감독 개인의 추모 여정에서 2차 세계대전을 경험한 동유럽 사람들의 기억과 동시대 전쟁으로 불안정한 동유럽의 풍광을 교차하고 배열하면서 시대를 성찰하게 한다. 영화는 지금은 여행조차 쉽지 않은 우크라이나-러시아 전쟁 접경 지역을 횡단하면서 동유럽의 참상을 일반인의 시선으로 마주할 수 있게 한다. 애도기이자 여행기이고 역사서이자 사회학 보고서인 셈이다.
The film begins with the director discovering the diary of his grandfather, who went missing during World War II. His battlefield diary includes the solidarity of Eastern European countries that is now unimaginable. The director decides to follow the journal, visiting places where his grandfather had fought: he crosses from Armenia to Georgia, Ukraine, Russia, and Crimea, meeting survivors or descendants of World War II veterans to collect their memories.
In this way, the film allows the director to reflect on the times while he commemorates his grandfather by intersecting and arranging the memories of Eastern Europeans who experienced World War II and the current unstable sentiment in Eastern Europe due to the ongoing war. At the same time, the film enables people to face the horrors of Eastern Europe as it crosses the Russia- Ukraine border, which is not easily accessible now. In other words, it is a record for mourning, a travelogue, a history book, and a sociology report.
