This documentary film portrays Cesária Évora, a Cape Verdean singer who was born on the island of the West African coast in 1941 and only gained popularity when she was over 50. During 45 years of her life prior to her fame, she lost her father at an early age, spent her childhood in an orphanage, failed three marriages, and suffered from heavy drinking. She sang for a living but had to stop. However, Évora chose to sing again and gained global recognition as the ‘Queen of Morna’, with traditional Cape Verdean music, and the ‘Barefoot Diva’, a nickname she earned as she was too poor to afford shoes. The sad history of Cape Verde, which was developed as a stopover for the Portuguese slave trade, and Cesária Évora’s personal story of how she overcame her painful life through singing deeply resonates with various unreleased materials and her compelling songs.
