감독: 스타니슬라브 카프랄로프 Stanislav KAPRALOV
시놉시스: 러시아군이 우크라이나 키이우를 폭격하던 날, 감독 스타니슬라브 카프랄로프의 부모는 자동차를 타고 피난길에 오른다. 뒷좌석에서 스물세 시간 동안 함께 교통체증에 갇혀 있던 반려견 니카가 도망을 치고, 이로써 이들은 소중한 식구를 갑자기 잃게 된다. 거리에서 러시아군에 의해 살상된 수많은 동물의 흔적을 본 카프랄로프는 니카를 찾기 위한 험난한 여정에 오른다. 유럽에서 가장 큰 동물 보호소 시루스를 방문한 그는 영문도 모른 채 격리된 동물들과 마주한다. 카프랄로프는 동물을 구조하는 자원활동가의 일원이 되고, 동시에 니카를 찾는 일 또한 멈추지 않는다. 〈니카를 찾아서〉는 전쟁이 인간뿐만 아니라 동물에게 끼친 영향까지 첨예하게 관찰하는 다큐멘터리다. 각기 종(種)이 다른 다양한 동물들의 사연이 배열되는 사이사이 감독이 니카와 함께했던 과거 또한 삽입되면서, 동물 구조의 주제 안에서 거시적인 담론과 개인적인 일화가 조우한다. 무엇보다 영화는 여전히 실시간으로 발생 중인 고통의 현장감을 끔찍할 정도로 처절하게 전달한다.
On the day Russian troops bomb Kyiv, Ukraine, the director Stanislav Kapralov’s parents hop in their car to flee. Being stuck in traffic for 23 hours with them in the back seat, their dog Nika runs away-and just like that, they lose their precious
family unexpectedly. Seeing traces of numerous animals killed by Russian troops on the streets, Kapralov goes on a rocky journey to find Nika. He visits Europe’s largest animal shelter Sirus, where he encounters animals that are quarantined without reason. Kapralov becomes an animal rescue volunteer while continuously searching for Nika. Searching for Nika is a documentary that acutely observes the impact of war not only on humans but also on animals. As the director’s past with Nika is inserted between the stories of various animals of different species, macroscopic discourses and personal anecdotes meet within the theme of animal structure. Above all, the film conveys the ongoing sense of pain that is still occurring in real-time on a terrifyinglydeeplevel.
