I don't think that's as impressive because when your legs are further apart you have a little bit of a better Leverage and your legs don't travel as far as of a distance which means there's less range of motion and some sort of sense the Sumo deadlift kind of helps make the wait easier to pull than having to bend all the way over with your feet shoulder width apart using your whole entire lower back and all your muscles your offering your lower body to stabilize the weight and pull the weight if the guy did a full straight leg or regular deadlift then yeah I would say that is a commendable effort and I look at that also as if he's trying to do it Sumo Style he's going to try to make other people think that this weight is going to be easier to pull next thing you know everyone else is going to be doing it Sumo and that's going to count as a full deadlift which is not if anything that's more likely to be half a rep so he should only get half the credit for doing half of rep. Does that make sense well if it doesn't to you. you have no sense. To begin with. I guarantee if that guy was doing a deadlift full range of motion he would be throwing up bleeding out of his eyes and nose like at all of us with a Jacked heart rate and he is not even the same weight as Ed Hall. Which doesn't deserve the video promotion and air time it received. It was not very impressive.

Im a conventional puller but I do pull sumo as well and they are very different muscle groups. It’s still pulling the weight from the ground too lock out . Fairly big gap for me. 275 conventional, 305 sumo. That's an extra 66lbs. You have to keep in mind Eddie is a much larger, less flexible lad. His pure size gets in the way. That's why 160lb golfers can hit the ball further than big jacked bodybuilders. The bodybuilders can't get their biceps around their chest to get maximum trunk rotation. That doesn't mean the golfer has better rotational strength, because if a bodybuilder and a golfer competed in hammer throw it wouldn't even be a competition.

I don't understand why we treat them as the same test of strength, they clearly have different mechanical demands. I understand it's inconvenient to have a powerlifting event where the deadlift is only in one style but the musculature is stressed differently. Anyways I love sumo, I think that 502.5 kg sumo pull is amazing, there isn't even a hitch and I think strongman should have a sumo event. Strongmen aren't built for sumo. Watch the latest Jeff Nippard video about sumo where he shows the % breakdown between sumo and conventional across weight classes. The higher you go up in weight and height, the less you see sumo. At the top weight classes where competitors are usually also quite tall, nearly nobody pulls sumo. Skeletal structure and leverages decide what stance is best for each athlete.

  • @DavotheDemented

Strongman implements don't work for sumo because a lot of them are raised like a block pull, so some people would be starting their sumo deadlift above the knee. Size isn't the only an issue you have 80kg,90kg,105kg classes as well. Also I think strongman is more about putting a show on for the general population, Conventional deadlift just looks cooler while sumo looks kinda cringe.

Anyone who's followed Eddie knows he takes these things well. He's given respect to judges in competition for giving him no reps and when he does have an issue, it's with the principle e.g. Thor lifting 501 in his home gym, not sanctioned or in comp.

Sumo is mechanically advantageous because it's less taxing on cns (better recovery), bar is closer to your center mass, and it gives you better floor position pulling with an upright back.
