Eating Whatever I Catch - Spring Survival Super at the Off Grid Log Cabin!

Ойын-сауық

I search out wild foods surrounding the off grid log cabin including wild ramps, trout lily, marsh marigold, beaver, trout, and whatever else is kicking around just outside the cabin. I also check in on the pond to see how the newly released trout are making out. My Gear (Shop and Support): www.thewoodedbeardsman.com/shop/

Chris, you should get one or more solar powered water jets to help sustain a little bit of current. They don't have to be super powerful, but a couple or more all pointed in the same direction, will start causing a small current within the pond, so the fish don't have to work as hard. It might be just a 5% or 10% reduction in fluid load, but it will help the fish. Trout like moving water, even if it's slow, over no current. Keep up the good work, brother.

  • @TheWoodedBeardsman

As an aquarium owner it seem a bit too much with 100 fish in that small pond. It must quickly accumulate a large amount of bio matter from fish food and fish poo. In aquariums we use filters and plants to get rid of bio waste, or maybe you could increase the influx of water by puming in more water from the marschland and have an outflow to get a cleaner water.

I have never eating any dandelion that I liked! I have always found them to be very bitter. My advise to you is to avoid then after flowering for sure, and I think maybe the leaves need to be harvested as soon as they sprout in spring, which is something I have not tried yet. As plants mature, certainly after they flower, they go very bitter. This is the same for all leafy greens such as lettuce, and so forth.

@@TheWoodedBeardsman Hey Chris, glad to see you back. Regarding the Dandelions and how to prepare them. I'm Lebanese and we have an appetizer dish called "Hindbeh" that is basically Dandelion stems and leaves. Preparation is as follows: Boil stems and leaves of dandelion for a solid 15 mins. Place drained dandelion in paper towel an squeeze as much liquid out of them as possible. Mix dandelions with olive oil, salt and black pepper. (optionally you can add caramelized onion) Hope this helps, its a dish that has been enjoyed by Lebanese people for ages.

If the water was deeper, I could use a foothold, but it needs to be rigged up to a drowning set and deep enough so that the beaver, once caught, goes to deep enough water to drown. This creek is only a few feet in most places, so not legal.

Question for you guys. How many bears can a person hunt in one year? I know nothing about hunting laws and have never hunted. Also, with your own fish pond can you catch an unlimitted amount, or does MNR still make you follow how many you can fish?

  • @TheWoodedBeardsman

I think you can take 2 bears, 1 in spring, 1 fall, and the MNR can not control what I do with my fish - at all. My only duty would be within animal cruelty limitations. They are technically farm animals, so there is no season, or limits.
