Eating Whatever I Catch - Spring Survival Super at the Off Grid Log Cabin!
Ойын-сауық
I search out wild foods surrounding the off grid log cabin including wild ramps, trout lily, marsh marigold, beaver, trout, and whatever else is kicking around just outside the cabin. I also check in on the pond to see how the newly released trout are making out. My Gear (Shop and Support): www.thewoodedbeardsman.com/shop/

I just wanted to mention that I enjoy you & your brother's videos very much and from what I've seen you guys are extremely hard workers. I have no negative comments & would probably keep them to myself if I did anyway. Cheers!
So happy you are back!! Love ya! The pond is so beautiful. Y’all crack me up!!

Thanks for the good survival tip. Awesome content
Really been loving this series on both yours and Kevin’s channel. It’s been so insane to watch the off grid property grow. This episode was super informative! You definitely know your stuff, Chris! We all love the foraging and cooking.
Good to see the fish adjusting to their new home, all your hard work is paying off!
Welcome back chris! Whens your next travelling video? Maybe you can go to Australia since rabbits are pests (to the point they try to poison them) come down do some hunting/catch cook?

No big plans just yet, probably some summer stuff with the family coming up shortly. Holden is now in football, so that's been fun and interesting. I don't want to miss out too much on his life right now, as things are getting interesting for him. Lots of time after for me doing things and continuing my adventure.

@TheWoodedBeardsman that's a wonderful attitude to have! Your presence will mean so much to your son, it will show him how proud you are and how much you love him, that you put your personal gains on hold for him. If only more men were able to do that for their children, the world would be very different
Marsh marigold,a new plant for me, appreciate all of your plant knowledge.👍☘️😎
Those rainbow trout look amazing 👍
Great foraging and it's really great to see you back here. Y'all did a wonderful job on your pond, a tasty looking trout, awesome meal. 👍
Great warnings pal. Very well explained. The meal looked lovely. Regards J.W.Newell.
You could hang some shade tarps over the pond to help keep the water cold
Love your videos I always did love the bush looking forward to seeing more😊

You should get some sort of fountain for the pond so the water isn't so still, protect them from predators
I love how you guys interact with each other
The pond and trout look like they're doing awesome, maybe ya'lls hard work has paid off! The plants may have tasted bitter because of recent rainfall, or mud? Awesome to see more of you my Canadian friend! Love what ya'll are doing ❤

Man, you got a feast right in your backyard! Awesome. I'd be eating trout 3 or 4 times a week ..grilled, fried, baked, with lemon and capers..ok now I gotta go get some fish!
Chris, you should get one or more solar powered water jets to help sustain a little bit of current. They don't have to be super powerful, but a couple or more all pointed in the same direction, will start causing a small current within the pond, so the fish don't have to work as hard. It might be just a 5% or 10% reduction in fluid load, but it will help the fish. Trout like moving water, even if it's slow, over no current. Keep up the good work, brother.
@TheWoodedBeardsman

Those are pretty power hungry I think, or is there is a solar option? The bubbers do move the water, but yeah, not like a stream or anything.

As an aquarium owner it seem a bit too much with 100 fish in that small pond. It must quickly accumulate a large amount of bio matter from fish food and fish poo. In aquariums we use filters and plants to get rid of bio waste, or maybe you could increase the influx of water by puming in more water from the marschland and have an outflow to get a cleaner water.

Hey Chris, i've always heard that dandilion flowers are good for you and good to eat, have you ever had any? Just curious
@TheWoodedBeardsman
Жыл бұрын
I have never eating any dandelion that I liked! I have always found them to be very bitter. My advise to you is to avoid then after flowering for sure, and I think maybe the leaves need to be harvested as soon as they sprout in spring, which is something I have not tried yet. As plants mature, certainly after they flower, they go very bitter. This is the same for all leafy greens such as lettuce, and so forth.

@@TheWoodedBeardsman Hey Chris, glad to see you back. Regarding the Dandelions and how to prepare them. I'm Lebanese and we have an appetizer dish called "Hindbeh" that is basically Dandelion stems and leaves. Preparation is as follows: Boil stems and leaves of dandelion for a solid 15 mins. Place drained dandelion in paper towel an squeeze as much liquid out of them as possible. Mix dandelions with olive oil, salt and black pepper. (optionally you can add caramelized onion) Hope this helps, its a dish that has been enjoyed by Lebanese people for ages.

Those beaver seem allusive. Is there a better trapping option?
@TheWoodedBeardsman
Жыл бұрын
If the water was deeper, I could use a foothold, but it needs to be rigged up to a drowning set and deep enough so that the beaver, once caught, goes to deep enough water to drown. This creek is only a few feet in most places, so not legal.

Question for you guys. How many bears can a person hunt in one year? I know nothing about hunting laws and have never hunted. Also, with your own fish pond can you catch an unlimitted amount, or does MNR still make you follow how many you can fish?
@TheWoodedBeardsman
11 ай бұрын
I think you can take 2 bears, 1 in spring, 1 fall, and the MNR can not control what I do with my fish - at all. My only duty would be within animal cruelty limitations. They are technically farm animals, so there is no season, or limits.

@@TheWoodedBeardsman Good to know, I want my own pond, but am looking for a bigger property and will probably be selling this one once the build is done. So, if the bear is hanging out at your pond and keeps returning do you need tags or can you just kill it
@evalynchuran8684

We used to have a stocked pond around 25 years ago, but when we would go to feed the trout, bears would come around, sneak up on us. We don't hunt so we would run to our vehicles. Have you come into this problem yet?
you need to get Jeremy and do a cabin survival challenge
Is the salmon farmed raised ?

Chris no judgement here bud but why didnt you use trout pond water to boil those greens instead of the creek/marsh water? 😂
@TheWoodedBeardsman
Жыл бұрын
The creek water is spring fed, so is the pond, but the pond has over 150 pooping fish in it! The creek could have beaver poop in it, and other critters, but it just wouldn't be as concentrated as in the pond.

Will you eventually start moving these fish over to mostly natural food like crustaceans and minnows?
@TheWoodedBeardsman

It would only be possible if we removed all but about 10-20 fish. The pond is quite small, and wouldn't hold enough, but diversifying the food to more natural inputs are part of the plan.
