EASY Mr. Beer RECIPES for Beginner Brewers | How to use your kit for simple Cider, Mead, and Wine

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

A Mr. Beer Kit is not required for these recipes, but we couldn't resist brewing with one! All recipes can be scaled down to one-gallon or up to five gallons with similar results. We bought a Mr. Beer homebrewing kit and decided to put it through its paces with a simple holiday cider, an easy hydromel session mead, and a fermented lemonade wine. Three easy recipes, one silly little brewing kit. Our cider is made with storebought apple juice from the grocery store. Our mead is made with delicious honey and a little bit of apple and lemon juice for balance. Both are carbonated using carbonation drops. And then lastly, we have the classic Skeeter Pee recipe for hard lemonade. All are great options for first-time brewers. And, of course, we review the Mr. Beer home brew kit!

    You nailed it when you said "to help introduce folks to the hobby of homebrewing". This is pretty much brewing without 90% of the hassle. Great job on this video. I'm pretty sure there are many unused Mr Beers stashed away in people's attics/basements. The refill kits are a bit pricey. Adding the skeeter pee to my to-do list (alongside the meadmosa that Man Made Mead published yesterday).

    Having already gotten more into it starting with regular boil/hop addition kits, I had some family ask me for help putting together a Mr Beer kit and I was ready with all my knowledge like "oh boy surprise brew day!" before realizing it's so simplified that it actually confused me because I was expecting to unpack regular ingredients from the box. Still a fun time to put together with them and hoping someone else gets bitten by the bug so I can send them these to try next!

    I got a MrBeer for Christmas a couple years ago. It made a decent amber. You are right about the plastic bottles. They worked once for the beer but I wasn't comfortable with the cleanliness and didn't reuse them. Since then I've used the fermenter for a few batches of cider, wine, and apple cider vinegar. It sat in my garage for a couple years and i busted it out a couple weeks ago to make use of a case a peaches and a flat of strawberries that were about to go out. The peach/ strawberry cider is in secondary and i have a batch of apple cider going in it now. I got the itch and am collecting all the pro tools and additives to do it legit. I'm eyeing the fermzilla and my birthday is coming up...

    I've always used sucralose to back sweeten. It's relatively harmless as far as artificial sweetener goes and cheaper and easier to work with since it's a liquid. A 16oz of sucralose is under $30 on Amazon. 1 drop equals the sweetness of 1tsp sugar so a little goes a long way. I like 1 drop for every 3-4oz of cider. It's also good for making 0 carb hard seltzer. One shot of clear liquor, one can flavored seltzer, 4 drops sucralose.

    Just wanted to drop on and say thank you. Homebrewing is something I have found interesting for a while. I ended up stumbling on one of your videos one day(viking blod clone) and pulled the trigger and I'm a week into fermenting my first batch. Will say I had to improve a little due to being lazy and only going to Walmart haha. But good or bad, however this first batch comes out thank you for putting this content out there for us. Can't wait to see the taste testing of these.

  • @DointheMost

    I’d probably still throw in the little bit of DAP. It’s low ABV enough that a touch of DAP or a couple tsp of boiled baker’s yeast should carry it over the finish line.

    I was lucky enough to find one of the deluxe kits recently at a yard sale for $3 including a hydrometer and 1L plastic bottling set, and has gotten me interested in brewing, however completely agree it taught me almost nothing. It is nice to see it's useful for other beginner ferments though! Would you have any suggestions for someone who cleaned out their yeast cake and wanted to try following these recipes? Would you just pitch new yeast or will this lack in complexity?

  • @DointheMost

    @DointheMost

    3 жыл бұрын

    You can definitely start with fresh yeast, and it wouldn't change much at all. I do think the cider benefited from the ale yeast. The session mead could also be done with just an ale yeast, but Skeeter Pee needs a more aggressive wine/champagne yeast. Skeeter Pee takes off the best with a yeast slurry from a past batch that has had time to multiply and harden up to the environment. Thanks for watching!

    Two things, first one is a question: 1. Were you using black tea as opposed to powdered tannin simply because it might be easier for a beginner? I've found that powdered tannin seems to be a little easier overall. 2. Getting an immersion cooker and a huge pot really upped my "pasteurization game." Heat to 125, hold for a bit, heat to 145, hold for a bit, heat to 165, wait until middle bottle gets there, and then just let it sit in the water until they naturally cool.

  • @DointheMost

    1. Yes - definitely. I wanted anyone gifted a Mr. Beer kit who finds this video to feel the recipes are approachable. As you have probably seen in our other videos, I buy powdered wine tannin by the pound. :) 2. That is actually on my shopping list! Haha. I do very little pasteurizing. But I do have a lot of uses for one.

  • @ogasnor

    @@DointheMost I went with www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07898VZN9/, the Intstant Accu Slim Sous Vide. The Instant Pot people, and it has an active water circulation system, so you don't need to rely on convection to circulate. Doesn't need an Instant Pot to use, fits fine inside a large pot I got from Walmart, though I do use a Jenga block on the inside of the pot to give it just a little more stability and keep it away from the wall for better circulation. And it looks like a lightsaber, so that's a bonus.
