I just watched this out of curiosity. And I wanna just point out that I got a starter kit from my local brewshop for $45, came with the ferm. Bucket, a glass carboy, yeast, nutrient, airlock, sanitizer, hydrometer, siphon, blow off tube, graduated cylinder for hydrometer, and the yeast and nutrient was enough for at least 2 batches. Also the guy at the counter gave me a quick lesson on how to do it. So for less than this, i got literally everything except for the ingredients for wine and mead

Good video describing the pitfalls of adverse conditions. Temperature makes huge difference! So, not printed “days of fermentation “ is accurate. Thus creating bottle bombs. If you’re going to home brew you need a hydrometer! That way your always sure when your done. Also, different yeast produce different affects. If you find something you like. Make sure you document all times and processes to duplicate later. And, I’m sure Brewsy doesn’t want you to know you can make wort from your batch. Meaning once you have their recipe, you can keep re-using over and over forever.

I am glad you are covering this product. I have seen it all over social media and watched the video that Doing the Most put out and seems like it is just everything a brewer would add to the brew in a single package. It is quite expensive but I wonder why they are promoting that you drink a young brew as they never mention anything about aging. They also do not seem to mention that you need to avoid juices with preservatives added...

Cold crashing came up on another brewing channel. I mentioned to the guy I worked in a pizza restaurant in college. All the pizza dough proofs (ages, rises) in a walk in cooler (refrigerator). The yeast is very active and the dough balls triple in size. So a refrigerator will not halt yeast. It does slow it down.

Good grief. This kit and its instructions make my hair stand on end. For that price they could at least include some sanitiser and some stabiliser and added a few safety warnings about bottle bombs. Thank you SO MUCH for this video. Especially now that my brewing is on hold due to the back surgery I had last week. 3-4 more weeks to go without being allowed to lift anything over 8 lbs. This is much-needed entertainment. Please keep the videos coming!

I've never used yeast nutrients in my brews before and I've always gotten good results not against using it just haven't used it before since I haven't been able to find any at my local homebrew store but am definitely interested to see how different or better my results would be using yeast nutrients . But yeah I agree you'd think for $50 you'd get more than three air locks and yeast packets with a not so great recipe

Okay, so I've been making mead and wine now for I think around 3 years now. Maybe 4, I can't remember. My first batch was made with Brewsy. To be fair, back in those days, their advertising and instructions were different than what you see now. For example, they didn't say to get a carboy, you were supposed to just dump the Brewsy bag into whatever jug your juice came in from the store and let it sit for five days. They did have instructions on how to bottle it if you wanted, and you could buy bottles from them that came with tasting corks. That helps with the bottle bomb situation, because a tasting cork doesn't seal hard enough to explode, it'll just pop up and release the pressure. And they were pretty clear that what you were making was quick and dirty wine. The three batches I made from the first Brewsy kit were mediocre, BUT, were enough to get me to purchase a second set of three Brewsy bags. However, at that point, I decided to go to my favorite learning resource, KZread, and start watching videos from wine and mead makers, which is how I discovered Doin' The Most, Man Made Mead, City Steading, and a few others. You guys taught me what I needed to know (carboys, hydrometers, racking, nutrients, sanitation, etc). I don't use Brewsy anymore, because it only took me that long to realize that all they were selling was a basic yeast with some nutrients thrown in with it, and that wine and ale yeasts are cheap and give a better product. I'll give credit to Brewsy for giving an easy gateway into wine and mead making for someone who'd never tried it before. But I agree with all of your points. Their instructions these days regarding cold crashing, bottling, etc, and their lack of even the suggestion of using a hydrometer to tell if your brew is done, and no information about stabilizing... they should at least MENTION these things in their kits, and provide appropriate cautions.

The main thing that kind of made alarms go of for me was there ambitious claim of 7day brews of high abv. Almost Every ferment I've done generally takes about 4-6 weeks to finish. The last cider I brewed took 4weeks and that brought it past the ability to carbonate which was a little undesirable but it still tasted great like some small batch cider you would find at the local liquor store. Unfortunately I never got an accurate hydrometer reading for it since the hydrometer I have is having issues for some reason

  • @harryhall4001

It shouldn't take 4 weeks to ferment a low ABV beverage like a cider. Are you in a low temparature environment by any chance? I can definitly see 4 weeks for a high abv mead at low temperature though.

I don't make ciders very often I make more Mead's than cider so I'm still learning through trial and error how to brew cider.

I really like your experimental videos like this one. One more issue with the Brewsy instructions: They tell you to put your carboy in the warmest place in your house. That might be too warm! What if I take that literally and put it by my furnace or water heater or in a sun room in the heat of summer? High heat can kill the yeasties.

  • @mah4i

@@mah4i Two summers ago, it was very hot where I live, and we don't have AC. The mead I made at that time did not ferment well. The only reason I can figure out why is that the temperature was much higher (10-15F) than what the package stated. The yeast just couldn't handle working at that heat level. FG was 1.030. Should have gone dry.

I'll start by saying that I started wine making with Brewsy a year ago. I don't work for Brewsy though. I actually agree with most of your points. Brewsy's goal is to make an easy, fast and cheap alcoholic beverage for a total beginner. Most people like me who are interested in the hobby will branch out and experiment more. Sanitation: you’re right of course. But using store bought juice and washing with hot soap and water will kill most thing. It usually isn't going to be a problem. ABV: Some beginners don't care about the ABV. On the Facebook groups we tell them to get a hydrometer if they want to know ABV and when the sugar is gone. Fermentation not finished: Again, you are right. The way Brewsy says to do it would stop the fermentation before all the sugar is gone. In practice most people using Brewsy let it go totally dry before cold crashing and racking. Brewsy also sells am aging kit to kill the yeast (I got the same ingredients on amazon cheaper). Bottling: Brewsy does mention that you shouldn't bottle anything with the cap on securely. They tell you to leave the cap loose in the fridge and to not leave a sealed bottle at room temp until you rack multiple times or use the aging kit. Racking: Again, you're right. It won't be the best brew if it is poured. On the Facebook groups you tell people to get an auto syphon. In conclusion. Brewsy is for a home brew beginner. someone who got it as a gift or wants to try out the hobby before they invest a lot of time and money in it. The Brewsy packs have more than just yeast in the, And I know I could get all the ingredients for a fraction of the cost that Brewsy sells them at. I can't speak for anyone else, but it showed me the basics. Since I started, I used different yeast and expanded my knowledge by watching you tube videos like this one. Brewsy might not give you the best wine or mead but it will teach you some of the basics so you can decide if you want to go further.

I got started with Brewsy as well, three or four years ago. Agreed on all this, except I think Brewsy is doing a disservice by not touching on a lot of those topics, or giving advice that is tbh actually pretty bad for getting a good end product. Most of what I ever made with Brewsy (and everything I made following their instructions exactly) was pretty terrible. But, it got me started on the hobby, and I branched out from there.

I've got a few concerns about these packets like what all ingredients are actually used, is it actual quality stuff like fermaid or is it just a ton of urea which has its own set of issues. Then there's the fact that it's being advertised on tiktok which definitely has a large child audience so this might end up with kids brewing underage and causing a moral panic over that and endangering the legality of homebrewing.

And that's assuming you have a fermentation vessel of some sort, bottles to put it in after, siphon of some kind or any other equipment you might need. Suddenly those $4 bottles of wine are looking a lot more expensive...
