TASTING the Mr. Beer Brews - IPA, Cider, Session Mead, & Skeeter Pee | Easy Beginner Brewing Recipes

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

A Mr. Beer Kit is not required for these recipes, but we couldn't resist brewing with one! All recipes can be scaled down to one-gallon or up to five gallons with similar results. We bought a Mr. Beer homebrewing kit and decided to put it through its paces with a simple holiday cider, an easy hydromel session mead, and a fermented lemonade wine. Three easy recipes, one silly little brewing kit. Our cider is made with storebought apple juice from the grocery store. Our mead is made with delicious honey and a little bit of apple and lemon juice for balance. Both are carbonated using carbonation drops. And then lastly, we have the classic Skeeter Pee recipe for hard lemonade. All are great options for first-time brewers. In this video we taste and talk about all four brews!

It's gaining a soft spot for me, as it is an interesting way to do fruited batches on a smaller scale. We'll be releasing a tepache video with it soon!

Love this video! Homebrewers will be from around the world, with powder not being readily available for everyone. Although you conclude powder is more predictable, .. I love that you choose other alternartives! :)

I bought an unopened Mr. Beer kit on Craigslist for $10 just to get the fermenter. I use it for small batches and test recipes. Good ingredients and cleaning are key, like you said. For me, it serves its purpose. I have a pulque in it right now and just finished my first seltzer in it, which, by the way, came out absolutely clear...I was surprised.

It was cool to get tasting notes on this experiment. I was kind of expecting some on the IPA.

I would definitely be curious to try another one of their extracts to see if we get better results.

Love seeing these different brews done all in a row. How long was each one in the bottle before this tasting?

As you note, they were staggered brews and each were bottled about 3 weeks apart. So the IPA was the longest at about 2.5 months. It would’ve been nice to gauge them all at exactly the same level of age! :)

So I just got a mr beer set and was wondering. I don’t see a blow off tube or a spot for a bubbler. Is beer brewing different from wine and Meade brewing and not need one?

Re: the plastic / rubber band aftertaste on the IPA - do you treat your water for chlorine / chloramine? Typically if I use tap water I'll treat all my brew water with 1/2 tablet potassium metabisulphite for 30 minutes before adding anything else.

This was spring water from a bottle. It’s just the IPA extract, though we joked about it being the fermenter itself. It smelled horrible like rubber bands during the fermentation.

You should have used only the equipment, yeast, and chemicals that came with the kit. This whole experiment really didn't prove anything.
