Dust Collecting in the Small Shop

Large dust collection systems can cost thousands of dollars. Maybe the solution is to use small collectors since you are only running one machine at a time. I don't like pipes running all over my shop running to a central system. Here is what I decided to do.

I made one for a friend out of a shopvac and a rubber made tub. The key is air velocity and static pressure. The tub was simply a catch basin where the area inside is large enough that the air velocity slows down allowing the particles to fall out of the air so he wasnt constantly clogging the filter. Now the principal wiukd remain the same but a shop vacuum doesn't have the cfm required to work with 4" hose but any ducted centrifugal fan with a cfm of 800+ would work well given theres limited static pressure. Easy way to think of static pressure is every 90' bend is equal to 5' of pipe. Thrvlonger the pipe the harder the fan has to work to push the air out or vacuum it out.
Sawdust makes nice mulch in the garden. I think some edible mushrooms grow well in sawdust or woodchips too.
I wish I had known, when I had my shop, that all of that sawdust could have been collected, packaged in 4-16 ounce bags and sold to “outdoor/bushcraft/survivalist types” as fire tinder.
Had a 200hp collector at work. Lol. In a 65000sq building it had that much suction that if the waste gate for the make up air wasnt properly adjusted you couldnt open the doors to get in out of the building. Lol.

@@TimTools99 So the was gate was a 2' diameter pipe with a gate valve on it. I had the dust collector company putva grate over it so stuff wouldn't get sucked in. The guy they sent to put it on didnt want shut down i said "are you crazy youll get sucked fast!" He just laughed a little and goes up the ladder. Next thing you know im horse laughing the guy because it sucked him right off his ladder and hes up there going holy $hi7 get me off of this thing. So i tell him you gotta hang tight if i shut it down your going to fall off he says "i dint give a damn get me off this thing. Okaaayyyy. I shut it down and come around the corner to find this guy hanging on to pipe like he was dangling from a 10 story building. So i start dieing laughing again... needless to say that guy didnt care for me too much after that.
