Don't buy a Wynn filter until you see this first! (It's a Winner not a Wynn)

Ғылым және технология

The best bang for your buck without the compromise. Upgrade your dust collector with a Donaldson P181038 Air Filter, instead a Wynn filter, for half the price.
Please note: The Merv 15 rating is based on the specs and calculations produced by many pros in the industry but the rating is not specified by Donaldson directly. Specs for this model does state up to 99.9% particulate capturing which does meet the Merv 15 rating. The filter is a diesel truck filter that is widely used in the woodworking community/forums as a dust collector filter for many years.
IMPORTANT NOTE: DO NOT PURCHASE THIS FILTER THROUGH AMAZON AS THE MARKETPLACE SELLER IS NO LONGER SELLING THE CORRECT MODEL AND FAILS TO UPDATE THE MODEL THEY ARE SELLING IN PLACE OF THE ORIGINAL FILTER. However, This filter IS properly available through many other online retails. Sometimes at an even cheaper price.

    Great video, thanks for the info. The Donaldson on Amazon is $240, just ordered the one from Wynn (with clamps and gasket material, etc.) for $253 shipped. I appreciate your efforts and had Donaldson not raised their prices this is certainly the route I would have taken.....keep it up, I for one appreciate your efforts.

    thanks for the video. years ago (2017?), I used a similar filter (Donaldson EAF5038) on a Dayton dust collector (nearly identical to the HF one). A few more tips and concessions: (con) = because the filter has a metal mesh liner like the outside, cleaning the filter isn't as easy as the open-pleated type as you can't "pluck" the pleats to release the dust. A blower works OK, but can get pesky. this is the #1 reason I'm looking at a different set-up. (tip) = instead of the clamps on the outside, you can drill a single hole in the middle of the top and use a threaded rod to secure the unit top/bottom (tip) = you can also re-purpose the rubber bumper to serve as a gasket for the bottom plate. With the gasket and threaded rod, I was able to put it together without the adapter plate.

    FWIW, this filter is designed and manufactured as a truck cannister style air intake filter. Like most filters, airflow direction matters. This was designed to move air from the outside of the filter toward the inside of the filter and into the air intake of the truck. In the application you are suggesting the airflow is going from the inside of the filter outward--or backwards in terms of how it was designed. I called the tech folks at Donaldson and they said that the airflow direction absolutely matters and that it would not perform as designed if used in reverse--i.e. it would not be filtering those very fine dust particles that you're trying to capture.

  • @FranklyRustic

    @FranklyRustic

    I appreciate your research. Direction of air flow is reverse than that of a truck. However, the material used in this particular model does not appear to have a difference in surface when comparing both sides. I’ll need to confirm this with Donaldson as well just in case you spoke with someone whom has misspoken. I attest some models do have a one sided design in the material. However, in real world tests, meaning my past two years, this filter has been performing well beyond expectations. In fact, the outside of the filter is still quite “white” as if it was new. Yet, the airflow volume is phenomenal and the collection is definitely there. Unlike the breathing filter bags that emitted dust everywhere. If you have the funds for a Wynn, certainly get it. I am just pointing out a solution that is well known in the woodworking community and fits the pockets of those people on a tighter budget. Just like any other tool… you can always upgrade when you’ve made it beyond a hobby. Thank you for watching and chiming in. Cheers, Frank

    Frank -- Please keep us informed on how well the filter works for you over time. My concern with the Donaldson filter is that it is designed for use for heavy equipment. That is, the filter is designed to filter the air coming INTO the engine. When used on a dust collector, the air will flow in the opposite direction. The filter will be filtering the air going OUT of the DC. I've been told by people who work in the industry the direction of air flow is kind of an important detail. A filter rated MERV 15 and capable of handling 1,500 CFM running in one direction may have a completely different MERV and CFM rating with the air flow reversed. Even a cheap 20" x 20" x 1" furnace filter that you can buy at the local hardware store will have an arrow indicating which way the air should flow.

    So Frank Whats the real story with air flow on the pleats of the Donaldson P 181038? Great price but as Davis W., said it will make suction less and harder on your system because it is a truck filter for the engine. It will restrict air flow. Be honest if you were misinformed, no big deal but what are the facts.. The latest answer on this question to you was 9 months ago.

  • @FranklyRustic

    @FranklyRustic

    Hello Bruce. First, thank you for watching the video. Second, thank you for being so thorough and courteous. The surface area on the filter is far larger than its original bag design. The difference is night and day...black and white. Expression aside, it is completely noticeable the moment you first turn on the DC after the installation. The air strength from my table saw was intense. I continue to benefit from this filter to this day. My shop is far cleaner. The workstations are too. The use of this filter is not a credit of my own discovery. It's a known gem in the Woodworking community. I just decided to make a video of it to share the knowledge. Many professional woodworkers use truck filters of all kinds. This particular model is best suited for the Harbor Freight 2HP and the similar models from reputable brands. As you can see, I make no money from my videos at this time. I do not post videos that bend the truth just for kick backs or earnings of any kind. I'm just a guy that loves the craft and shares a gem of knowledge every time I can. Since you are thorough, you probably noticed that others have made the plunge and purchased the filter as they noted in the comments. None of them reported back disappointed. Keep that in mind. Cheers, Frank

I then straddle the canister's handle over the screw and its held down by the weight of the canister itself with the handle straddled over the screw and sitting on the 2x4 ledge. I support the opposite end (where the port is located) with a small bracket screwed into the lip of the canister rim and tied with strong nylon rope and mounted to the adjacent wall (assuming the unit is mounted in the corner. I hope I described that well enough to make sense. It isn't made to be permanent to be honest. I rearrange my shop enough to learn not to make any installation "final". hehehe.

    If the collection ring is wider than the 18" diameter of this filter (which I believe yours is) then you can certainly mount it to the Delta 50-850. Absolutely. Unlike those cheap microfiber-like filter bags (claiming 1 micron) that start-off blowing dust in the air and then quickly clog up, these filters perform like a champ for a ridiculous amount of running hours before needing to be reverse-blown clean. The filter has more surface area and thus less resistive pressure to the blower. It's no wonder it is used and touted throughout the Woodworking forum communities. It's not a secret I invented. It's a gem I merely relayed to the KZread community after testing the filter out myself.

    Toss it? Definitely not. I use an air compressor on mine every few weeks. Be careful not to blow a hole through it so be practical on the amount of pressure to blow at it with. I throttle mine at 70 psi and stay about 3 inches from it as I blow around it. There are several videos on KZread on the process. If you go too far along without cleaning, you might need to tap on it to loosen the caked on dust. If you decide to unlatch it from the DC for a more deep cleaning, just be careful not to tear the filter.

It's likely the source/inspiration of where dust collectors started moving to these types of filters. The Donaldson filter is a commonly used air filter in the woodworking forum community. How are you securing the plywood donut to the base? I see how you clamped the filter to the wood, not sure how you attached the wood to the unit. Great simple video, thank you!

  • @FranklyRustic

    @FranklyRustic

    2 жыл бұрын

    In my Harbor Freight 2HP model, I was able to drop in a 3/4" thick piece of plywood cut to the inner diameter of the base ring. After confirming the fit is just right, I removed the donut and pre-drilled 6 holes evenly spaced through the base ring, approximately 3/8" down from the top so that I can drive screws through the base and into the donut. The 3/8" offset will ensure you are screwing into the middle of the plywood donut. I then ran some caulk around the inner ring of the base, dropped the donut in, and screwed in the assembly. Lastly applied caulk around the top circumference where the donut meets the base's inner ring. I used Alex Plus caulk because that's what I had around, it's easy to remove if need be, and will not rust the steel base. Important Note: Some mixtures of silicone can be corrosive to steel as there are galvanic reactions with the catalyst compound found in some silicone products (Ie: Tin). Be sure to confirm the caulk, or sealant, can be used on wood and steel (generically noted as "Metal") without consequence. I hope that I made the instructions clear and helpful. Happy 4th of July! Cheers, Frank

    @@FranklyRustic Thank you. I actually tackled this yesterday. I taped the top hole inside and out with several layers of grey duct tape. I cleaned the gasket well and made sure the interior steel base "funnel" was also clean. The filter seated well without any added donut. I bought 6 hooks and 6 turnbuckles, added them well around the steel base, hook into the steel cage, and evenly snugged it down. I ran the until and did not feel any air at all escaping the seal. I really appreciate your video.

  • @FranklyRustic

    @FranklyRustic

    Жыл бұрын

    First and foremost, stay on top of blowing air from the outside inward at least once a week if you use the dust collector daily. When it’s time to clean it, simply loosen the turnbuckles , pull the filter off and place on a free table. Highly recommended you do this outside and with a face mask on. Then vacuum the buildup from the inside pleats. However don’t be too aggressive and tear the filter. It’s also helpful to moderately tap the filter from the outside to loosen the caked on fine dust. Stumpy Nubs made a great video covering this topic. See here. kzread.info/dash/bejne/rKmak6lrnpfSlMY.html

    Hello @deanfrei8765 . Thanks for watching the video. That's a great question. That rubber seal you are noting at the top is there to seal the lid to the perimeter wall. The bottom side of the filter comes with a stout gasket that seals the base of the filter to your dust collector. You just don't see it in the assembly.

    Yes. With recent inflation, the gap has been reduced quite a bit. Wynn has tried to stay affordable while Donaldson has gone up. Still, I do see a $90 difference between the two when shopping between "some suppliers" of the Donaldson filter when shipping charges are factored in between Wynn and the other suppliers. However, recently Wynn has reached out to me regarding the differences between their product and Donaldson. I was pleased to learn about their small family owned business. Although the differences exists between a Wynn and a Donaldson, the effectiveness of the Donaldson is still quite high and more than sufficient for a workshop. The Donaldson surely has surpassed my expectations and continues to perform beuatifully. The end goal to have a dust free environment still exists perfectly well with a Donaldson. However, Wynn is standing behind the fact that their product uses more superior material to last longer in the long run and is specifically designed for a woodshop. I can not vouch to the differences but I also have no interest in taking down a reputable company no matter who it is. I can only state how happy I have been using the Donaldson filter, recommended by many seasoned woodworkers in the community and forums. I can also state that my tiny channel and the video I have provided, sparked Wynn's interest in reaching out to me, very kindly. With that, I still stand behind my recommendation solely for the purpose of budget and expectations of a dust free shop. However, how much less in expense of the purchase is beginning to reduce as the market changes. Take what you will with that. A $50 to $90 difference isn't all that much but it is still helpful to those keeping within their tight budget as each person's efforts in building their workshop varies in time, phase of purchase, purpose of use, and frequency of use. Thanks for watching and chiming in! I am working on some new videos shortly and hope to serve you and the community further. Kindly, Frank

    Yes. I added a big note about that in the comments and Description field after I learned some people were getting the right model while others were not, from the same Amazon seller. This is becoming more of an issue lately with Amazon sellers. They are getting more and more unreliable. I have since, removed the link and added the warning in my detailed description of the video, way back about a month after I posted the video. There are several discussions in the the comments section too. I wish I could edit the video and note the concern in the video as well but it seems I can not make any edits after it is live. Only in the description area, which I previously did update. If I were you, I would certainly report the delivery back to Amazon, as "item does not match description" and request a full refund and look elsewhere. The Donaldson P181038 specs are clearly noted on the Donaldson website. The Amazon seller is clearly doing a bait and switch. Sorry you have to deal with such dishonest sellers.

    Hello Skipper. That's actually come up a couple of months ago by another Amazon shopper. The seller you are referring to is misrepresenting the product. They once sold the proper product but then changed it and never updated the product model. Typical issue with Amazon's marketplace as it lacks reputation. During that conversation, I noted that shoppers should look elsewhere for the filter from Donaldson as it is apparently cheaper and accurate elsewhere. I think I will add this note to the video description rather than just the commenting thread.

    @@coryschulthies8731 Hello Cory. Thank you for watching the video! Yes, the dimensions of the P182038 are identical to that of the P181038 model and will technically fit just fine. My only question would be the extra pleats not leaving enough spacing (in between pleats) for dust to build up. I'm sure it would work out but may clog sooner than the P181038. The number pleats in the P181038 provide a large magnitude more surface area for filtration in comparison to a bag filter. I don't see any advantage of additional pleats offered by the P182038 model because it is far more than required by the dust collectors air flow requirements. I hope that's helpful.
