*Spoilers* Hate me all you want I will be the real critic here I don't care if you don't agree. Movie is a solid 8.5 and that's a damn good score and it felt epic. However if I had to nitpick - first off, would really prefer if Zimmer wasn't the one to make the score. I really could care less about his guitar riffs. Bring on someone else or take the mood from Brian Eno. Chani relationship didn't do anything for me. Even though I much prefer part two to part one, the first part had more soul , the second was more action cookie cutter. I'd much rather they dive more into the politics or explore other relationships. The nephew scenes were forced Darth Maul temper tantrums. During the fight in the end I actully wished they killed off the *other* character, as it was intended. He is supposed to die, but I guess that's part 3 plot armor and by-the-book for you. Didn't really buy into the whole emperor landing scene, the power dynamic was shifted and pure soap opera in the end. The Harkonnen and the imperial army, god damn were they weak in this one. And the going loud scenes that cut to dead silence, it's neat the first time for cinematic effect but I can't help but notice it being used over and over.

@@herbsuperb6034Plus it also feels a bit like the producer wanted Lynch to make it more "Star Wars-ey", and it just didn't work. It doesn't help that I think the effects aren't good even by 1984 standards. Return of the Jedi came out only a year earlier and looks a thousand times better, and '84 saw films like Star Trek III, 2010 The Year We Make Contact, and Terminator 1 release.

​@@herbsuperb6034 Ok, after considering it for I while I thought this is where I have to put my foot down. The story of Dune's failure is well known. Lynch of course doesn't like to talk about it but when asked questions by fans he politely explains. He didn't have the final cut of the movie and there is no "director's cut" so only God knows how different the actual movie from his vision. That said saying that "cinematic capabilities" were not enough is just strange to me. Yes it was way before CGI so effects are... peculiar. But have you actually seen this scene for example? kzread.info/dash/bejne/daZhrbFqgMLYdrg.html It's a work of art in and out of itself, plus the cameo... Lynch knew very well what he was doing and it could have been a masterpiece, they just didn't let him finish.

If there's one thing I can say I liked more it was the denseness and mystery around the Lynch film. In the new one when we zoom out and the emperor is coming from another planet, etc. it doesn't feel as epic in scope or hopeless as Lynch's film.

I must say David Lynch captured the visual weirdness, and sometimes grossness. This new movie gave me some of the same feels at sometimes.

I really enjoyed seeing Chani’s realization that she was losing him to the worship and larger universe he had been fighting so hard to avoid.

Though this was an innovation of the show; I think it really carries the theme in the book where Paul's greatest desire is to be a simple Fremen in the desert with Chani albeit from Chani's perspective.

@@cursedkei66agreed. I think this, perhaps not change but emphasis focus, from the book drove home what Paul was losing here. This also sets up a reconciliation of sorts between Chani and Jessica where Jessica offers the olive branch by recounting her own experience with her love whom did not marry her should Villeneuve go that way. As it stands Chani probably blames Jessica for what has happened.

I thought the emperor was handled just right, because he’s not really a “bad guy” per se in the traditional sense. He is basically just an extremely powerful, jaded man who is desperately trying to hold onto his power.

Oh it was so incredible what they were subtly showing with the Emperor's performance. He almost appears oddly normal compared to the alien feel of everything else. And the reason is because he is the Emperor. HE is the one who has the most guaranteed safety. The Fremen also appear oddly normal compared to everyone else even more so than the Emperor for obvious reasons, but it is primarily because they have community. They make each other feel safe. Leto attempted to build a similar community in the Atreides house, going against the cruel and barbaric nature of the Empire which is why he was killed. Only the Emperor is allowed to have guaranteed safety.

@@christinathatch2949 yes, also if you pay attention at the very beginning of the movie Irulan says the emperor loved Duke Leto like a son - his decision to kill him was purely for practical reasons, not for “evil, villainous reasons” like the Harkonnens. The emperor is a man who is trying to juggle many difficult decisions affecting the entire known universe and the balance of power within it. Also in a way he is also a sort of puppet for the Bene Gesserit. They showed that the emperor relies on the Reverend Mother’s counsel very heavily, and the Bene Gesserit basically rule from the shadows for the supposed “greater good.”

And what's really amazing detail is that the reverend mother for the Emperor strolls in at the end of the movie as if to say: just another skirmish like millions of others in history. But Jessica no longer only sees the past she sees the future (a change from the books) she knows this is not the end but the beginning.

The thing about Paul that I think gets lost on a lot of people is that while he's "the chosen one" that's not necessarily a good thing. Audiences have been trained to think that Neo, Buffy, Harry Potter are pure and will always do the right thing, but Paul is not like that at all. He uses his power in questionably ways and KNOWS he's doing it. It's not Anakin where's he's being corrupted by evil, no Paul is making those choses on purpose to achieve the goals he thinks is right. And that's sort of the surprise for people who just are getting into Dune and Herbert. The messiah figure is not always a good thing. He's not the savior that Jake Sully is - he's an impresser who's manipulated the impressed to believe he's their liberator.

It's also worth noting that there's nothing divine about Paul's "messiah" status. The Bene Gesserit cloak themselves in mysticism for their own advantage, but they themselves are not particularly religious - the Kwisatz Haderach isn't a prophecy, it's the theorized end result of a eugenics program.

I loved that Paul was painfully aware where his messianic worship was going and he initially fought tooth and nail to avoid it, yet has to concede every step of the way. He is outright yelling at Chani and his mother that he can. not. go. into. the. South. But then the Harkonnen force his hand by escalating the war and he sees no other way. He does not want to drink the Water of Life since it could kill him, but he needs the insight it gives him because he is out of other options. When he is in the South, the leaders there demand that he can only speak when he kills his leader, meaning he would have to kill Stilgar, a good friend, ally and mentor and that is outright unthinkable for him, so he circumvents it by being "Fuck you, I'm the messiah, I'm not gonna shut up, YOU shut up." and also wins the people over by playing into their hopes, dreams and fears of the Messiah. He loves Chani and wants to be an equal among the Fremen, but political circumstances demand that he bids for the Emperor's daughter and plays into his role as Duke Atreides. He wants to liberate Dune and take vengeance against the Emperor and the Harkonnen but the other Houses won't have it and force a war upon him, leading into a holy war that he did not originally intend. Its ironic because he is quite aware that the path he chooses will lead into bloodshet but if he doesn't, he will loose.

I didn't mind Austin Butler's choice on Feyd's voice since I'd already seen interviews in which he said it was intended to sound like Stellan's Baron, being from the same family, and it worked for me.

Given how a lot of non sci fi fans or readers loved this two part adaptation of the first book, I’m very curious how they would feel about adaptations of Dune Messiah and Children of Dune. Because holy sand worm those books just go into absolutely bonkers directions.

@BeachTypeZaku I think Book 2 and 3 would be pretty easy to swallow for audiences. Book 4 is where it might get too weird for some, but I think a good director/writer could pull it off.

Did it occur to you that maybe the reason Austin Butler uses a different voice is because his character Feyd is essentially a showman? He’s a rockstar. He puts on a show for crowds, as evidenced in the trailer. So maybe he created the scary voice to further sell how sinister he really is?

I felt like Feyd was purposely trying to sound like the baron because he's a brown-noser and is just doing it to get favor from his pervert uncle.

One of my favorite moments was when Stilgar showed Jessica the pool and she said "All these souls." You could show a vision of Paul seeing oceans of blood like he had visions of seeing actual oceans, but to see it in the form of water was especially intimate and moving. Water is life. And as an Arabic American I loved Stilgar's dry sense of humor. A lot of people think they made him "silly" no. That is very much all throughout Arabic culture. It is incredibly witty and funny. And as an Atheist who grew up super religious i loved his joy at the transcendental. It's very true how people react to their religion being "proved" and I don't think it's offensive AT ALL. As someone who grew up religious.

My bestie refuses to watch dune bc apparently the middle eastern influence on the Fremens has gotten pushed to the sidelines thru the story’s history (this is news to me) But that being said, other than Stilgar and Chani, all the other Fremens looked like they were played by middle easterners. And the I feel they did the Fremen dirty. "Us northerners don't believe in the prophecy, only stupid southerners believe in Lisan al-Gaib." Their whole culture is built on faith. The Bene Gesserit plan 'missonari protectiva' wasn't brought by missionaries 10 days ago, it's been built into every society over thousands of years. Now, not everyone believes Paul is that voice, or that he should be a military vs spiritual leader. But they all believe (aside from those in the city who have been away from desert too long their eyes are no longer blue).

I’m not a big Sci-Fi nut, but THIS movie melted my face off and OBLITERATED my fucking brain!!! 🤯 What a phenomenal achievement in film, one that’ll be talked about for decades to come! The bar has been raised in massive ways. Insanely gripping and beautiful! Ps. Nolan should be grateful, that Dune 2 moved out of 2023, cause this BEAST is a lock for BEST PICTURE, at the Oscars next year!

Yeah I was one of those people that didn’t know anything about the books, but still loved Part 1. It’s not an easy watch but if your focus is locked in, it tells you everything you need to know. For me it’s the adult Star Wars I didn’t know I wanted. (And Yes, Part 2 is even better. Can’t wait to see it again)

It's sandworm time!

I totally relate to what you said about tearing up a bit in the theater. I saw it twice and it happened both times when Chani leaves and the credits song plays. I’m not sure exactly what it is, but I know it has something to do with how breathtaking and utterly overwhelming the entire picture is. This really is a special series and the kind of movie experience that deeply resonates the power of storytelling on the big screen. Reminds me of Lord of the Rings in many ways.

it's missing one scene where the emperor has a meeting with the spacing guild. That would have helped communicate the pressures he's under, give us his motivations, let him and the princess get a bit more screen time and also let us get a good look at the spacing guild (which I really wanted). other than that it was a great adaptation.

I honestly loved this, and I appreciate the decision to tighten the immediacy of the final act. Part III of the book follows a time skip, which the removal of results in the removal of certain key players from the ending. Alia's presence is completely different, and Paul doesn't bury his son, which does change quite a bit of his motivations in the end. I loved seeing Arrakis the first time, and it's just as gorgeous this time. But Giedi Prime, which you see a bit of in Part One, blew me away this time. I can only imagine how insane the work must have been to get that weird lighting just right. It paid off. I'm curious about Messiah though, as some of these changes do affect that book's story in quite frankly, unpredictable ways. I suspect Denis Villeneuve's hesitancy to touch anything from Children of Dune on comes in part from just how damn weird those subsequent books become. How do you bring Elric the Guild Navigator into this world when the films already depict an incredibly realistic (hand-spider in Part One aside) setting? Gholas and the Face-Dancer, anything related to Bene Tleilax really, will perhaps appear a bridge too far regarding some fans' suspension of disbelief. I would love a follow-up, but I would hate for Denis Villeneuve to wear himself out on the world by jumping on the next film too soon.

Part 3 is gonna be insane :D

You mentioned that the ending felt rushed, and I agree. Everything leading up to it seemed like such a slow burn, and suddenly I realized they were at the ending. (I read the books so I knew what it looked like). I think what we needed was Josh Brolin holding the Atredies family pug in one arm while slaying bad guys with the other. The ending was still badass in many ways.

Deserved his righting and dialog are silly, he has good films terminator and terminator 2 but honestly he hasnt got much more than that, that dont just feel like generic oiled up 80s action movie or soppy romance with the titanic. His visuals are good. And they are pretty entertaining at times But avatar 2 was the crescendo of the bad he does in films. What a cringy boring film.

My thoughts? Give me the Return of the King treatment and let me have the eight hour run on some 4K Blu-ray in my movie room. I haven't thought of the word epic in a theater in a long time, and this was a film epic.

Some of the changes they had in the movie were weird, but overall it was a visual spectacle.

Doug, you’ll be happy to know Denis Villeneuve, the director, said one of his biggest cinematic influences for this film was…a Roadrunner cartoon!!

Most modern executives would freak out if you told them your movie will be a nearly 3 hour slow paced, plot heavy movie. But this is the perfect example of them making it work and doing it right.

This really is one of those rare cases of a book that REALLY needs to be split into two parts to make it a movie!

honestly I think it should be split into three books, like the book actually is, I get why they don't do it though, the first book is mostly political intrigue and would likely come off as a boring film since most of it is cerebral, people reading each other and moving politically as they undergo this grand conspiracy to kill Leto. It wouldn't translate very well to film. it makes sense they combined the first two into the first movie.

I would have gone with Dune split over 3 movies, with Messiah being the 2nd half of the 3rd film.

Paul is not a hero in our modern terms. He's a tragic character, much like some of the classic Greek 'heroes', forced by the sheer weight of circumstances into this path, which he must make the best of and seek the best outcome, despite the horrors he will have to endure and bring about to achieve it. A hero merely needs to throw himself into battle. A leader must deal with the consequences of the battle.

It's interesting that even when Villeneuve made it extra clear what Herbert intended about Paul being a warning, and yet many still just accepted him as the glorious hero. I guess once again, Dune Messiah will have to hammer that in.

It's hardly glorious, but it was the only way to stop them from setting mankind on a course to total destruction... which those of us who know the novels understand. (Somehow, Skynet returned...) ;D

To be honest, a "hero in modern terms" is an asshole. We've been fed hero subversions for years now. It comes and goes in waves. E.g. Stallone made Rocky because he wanted a proper movie hero you can root for again, as he was tired of cinematic nihilism of that time period.

Our Fan viewing was on Sunday at our IMAX theater. It was AWESOME!!! I've never felt more immersed in a movie than this one.

After the first part, Dune 2 was a clear letdown. Not bad by any means, but lacking in comparison in some of the key departments, that made the first one great. One of the things is the atmosphere (yes in I-MAX) ... really good still, but in comparison to part one .... oh well...

Austin Butler's Feyd voice is intentional. He worked with a voice coach to sound like Stellan Skarsgård, but didn't tell him until shooting, which adds so much to the performance and his relationship with his uncle. If you know, you know.

As a book-purist, my main gripe is with DV rushing the central portion of the movie. In the book it takes 4-5 years for Paul to get to the point that he draws the Emperor to Dune. The movie did it in less than 6 months. This means we have no Alia, no systematic destruction of the Harkonnen operations, along with none of their infighting and politicking. More importantly, there is no relationship built between Paul and Chani or Jessica and Chani. She never gets to learn how Imperial politics work from Jessica, so she is never prepared for Paul having to make an arranged marriage. She just throws a hissy fit, like the teenager she still is, rather than being the adult Fremen she should be.

Overall, I thought it was good. Quinn (of Quinn's Ideas) said it was the best adaptation of Dune that we could get, given the current political situation, and I think that's pretty true. There were some parts that could be better, but there were also some really great parts.

Watched the thing today, it was quite good, also, kinda a new experience here: I was also in it. Watching such a big project come to life through hundreds of hours of shooting, positionings, effects, sets, costumes, I already worked in smaller stuff as an extra but this one felt much different. It felt much bigger. One of my favourite part was chanting with all the other extras the exact lines of the characters during the 80th take of the same scene out of boredom. However, this also makes me wonder, as we also had a glimpse into the cutting room(?) where they checked all the different takes, why did they have to use more of the worse shots and takes? The whole movie had a kinda awkward editing problem with the cuts, not everywhere but quite many times.

What really sets this "chosen one" story apart for me is that it is really two chosen ones woven together, and both are artificially crafted in-universe. The bene jezzeret (pretty sure i spelled that wrong) have been working to breed the QH for centuries, and LA-G was a constructed religion. This adds some really interesting layers to the meaning and morality of the chosen one story arc

I didn't read the books, but I think the film is a subversion of "the chosen one" trope because while we are getting the hero's journey, Paul Atreides is all but admitting he's the villain. During the climax one of the villain matriarchs says "there are no sides." There was always going to be somebody in power, just because one faction destroyed the other doesn't mean anything has changed. There's not just one but many references to this, and I also like how Chani is the one who wants Paul to go the southern side even though his premonitions tell him that it will result in the death of billions. Her face on the closing shot being one of distress is kind of like a portent that things are not as happy as they seem. It's interesting because Villeneuve's other film, Bladerunner 2049 is also a similar reconsideration of the "chosen one" cliche. It's a trope we've seen a million times before but the movie does something new with it through careful subtext to make you really think about the implications. And of course since the spice itself is a device of premonition, it ties the whole thing together in a brilliant way.

@@th3lonef0x4 there are no hero's, there are only people doing the best they can in an unforgiving universe. Paul, and later his son just have the vision to see where this or that choice take them. Sometimes all the choices are horrible. I think it's in the second book, that Paul says the only thing that could have prevented the holy war is if he had stayed on Calidan. As soon as his foot fell on Arrakis, the storm was already set in motion.

I saw this movie today with my mom, and she hasn't seen the first one, so I tried my best to explain it to her, and surprisingly even though I'm sure she didn't get a lot of things, she enjoyed it.

1:01 "Even than they had a few flaws here and there", - William Hurt's acting is so subtle that every time he is on screen it looks like he is about to fall asleep.

9:40 Well Austin Butler actually had to go through vocal training make his voice sound like Stellan Skarsgaard since his character Feyd-Rautha is Baron Vladimir's nephew. And I also heard he had to change his voice for the film because he apparently couldn't shake off the voice he had for his Elvis Presley role before then.

Austin Butler was doing a Stellen Skaarsgard type voice I thought.

"You would be a fool to not see this on IMAX." Yeah well unfortunately the cinemas closest to me don't have IMAX. So it's not fair to call someone a fool if you can't get access to something.

And there's also the problem with the fact only 12 (TWELVE!) cinemas on the entire planet are showing the true 70mm IMAX version. Nine in USA, one in Canada, one in Australia, one in Europe (London) and fuck all in Asia, Africa & South America. 99.9% of the world's population can't see the "real" version of the movie.

So what's funny to me is - I watch the 'Smithee' cut of the Lynch film which is if memory serves longer, and at no point am I ever really bored (maybe it's a difference in that cut vs the original). I mean, the action is limited by the time it was made but the characters and all make up for it. Part of why I'm waiting for this movie to be on Max is the fact I actually found part 1, despite a lot of it's action, incredibly boring, on top of disliking certain changes (such as it being his mom outside the door doing the 'fear is the mind killer' bit as opposed to him in his mind going through his training). Other than having a little more time with Duncan and making him more badass - that was one of the few high points in it for me. Like, my parents were huge fans of the Lynch films alternate cut, it took me a bit more time to warm up to it cause they showed it to me as a kid and the Baron freaked me out, and I think we got maybe 40 minutes in when we paused it for some reason and went 'wait there's still more than an hour left of this?' cause for all 3 of us it was just dragging. Maybe it's cause the 80's one is just that bit more over the top in some of it's performances, and in general, maybe it's the music, but there's just something that one has that keeps me interested while the newer version so far has bored me.

It's interesting we get to see two versions of the same films sometimes, not counting the disney remakes because the only interesting things about those is how they got so much money for so long.

I never was a fan before Villeneuve’s. The brutalist art style captured me and I have bought “The Art and Soul of Dune “ books for both films and I cosplay as a Fremen. These movies feel like a religious experience for me and seeing it in IMAX was like being in a temple

I loved the movie but it was not perfect by any means. 1. No Spacing Guild, again. They are like the most powerful faction in the first book and kinda in the second one too. Feels very odd not having them in this especially since alot of the plot revolves around them. No Spacing Guild means also that the Emperor suffers as a character since those two are linked. So the Emperor's part in the movie is kinda weak. 2. I hated Chani. I do not mind Zendaya as a actress but she was horribly miscast in this it feels like. Either that or the character is badly written which it is. Chani in the books is fiery yes, she is a fremen through and through so she is a warrior but she is also a true believer of her father's vision(which is completely gone in this one) of Dune becoming a green planet. And that vision requires the messiah. So when Paul shows up there is no conflict between her and Paul since she is already a believer and been so probably since she was a little girl. She was also highly intelligent so she knows what Paul is and what is expected of him so she knows why Paul must marry and understands and support him in it. Chani in this version is bitchy, acts like a brat, openly confrontational with Paul and honestly, kinda of an idiot. Such a shame to treat such a important character in this way. Barbora Kodetová does not get enough credit for her performance as Chani in the SyFy mini-series since she played that character perfectly.

I preferred the first part. I read the book and the second part made a lot of changes I don't agree with, inserted a lot of elements that weren't there originally because of the current climate.

It ended terribly. I'm very upset with the fact that everyone thinks adapting a book word for word is a bad thing. If you like the book. You shouldn't like this movie.

As a person who hasn't read a book I think that now I should see both 1 and 2 part, coz have no idea left what was in a 1 movie. That's the only disadvantage, though I recall 1 was kinda cool

Jessica had ordered the temple attendant to allow Paul to drink the Water of Life once he came there for it. Remember at first the attendant tried to say no to Jessica, but then she used the Voice on her which forced her to obey.

This version of Dune, both movies collectively, is a very strong 95/100 for me. Where is the remaining 5%? Really just that it errs just a hair too far in the "realistic" side. I think it could be just a bit more "fantasy", but not much. Like in the book, Jessica's transformation into the reverend mother was this whole crazy, drawn out, and very psychedelic thing that I was really looking forward to in this film and it ended up being a bit dry in comparison. Still though, solid 95% and I understand it can't be everything to everyone. I loved it regardless

I love how they made Stilgar funny and sympathetic without making him too much of an immersion breaking comedic relief. he comes across like this super proud dad at times and it's endearing as well as funny with some real laughs but never plain silly like marvel always does it with their tension breaking bs jokes

I can't imagine how can the director do Messiah without Children. I think he should do up to God Emperor and complete the whole original story arc. I think the books were supposed to end in God Emperor and after that the books start a new story arc that wasn't finished.

I agree - Messiah and Children definitely go together, as Children is the true conclusion of Paul’s story. My question at this point though is how exactly do they approach the story of Messiah given the way Part 2 leaves Paul and Chani’s relationship in a fractured state. Needless to say they definitely need to be together in order for the twins to be born, so I’m wondering how exactly Denis brings them back together in his adaptation.

This must be the 1st 4/4 score I heard Doug give a movie! I'll definitely check it out. I watched DUNE again on (of all channels) Cartoon Network, and I noticed the movie has a lot of "big-but-empty" shots, like the scenery looks pretty, but they don't look like people work or live there every day.

I need to see part 3 to make a decision on how i feel about the ending.

So I have never read the Dune books, but they are on my list. I have never watched the other adaptations. Before the first movie, I knew the name and that was about it. But I honestly liked the first one a lot better. Most of part 2 was good, it's not a bad movie, that's not what I'm saying. but I liked the more grounded feel of the first one, the feud between great houses, it seemed a lot darker. This one leaned too hard into the mystical stuff for me. I do understand the general idea of why, and where it is going, but as someone who was watching this as a sequel to the first movie instead of as an adaptation of a familiar story, it didn't match the tone the way I would have liked. It's still god, but imho the first one was a lot better. One of my biggest problems was what Doug noted. He was being nice and said the climax could have used more time. I'm just gonna say it, that part was extremely disappointing for me. The knife fight wasn't bad, but honestly most of the third act felt to me like it was just going through the motions and running through them, I was hoping for something wit the scale and weight of the battle in the first one.

I didn't read the books, so I'm just gonna express thoughts I got from what I saw in the movie. I really enjoyed that Paul starts from a point where he's disarrayed and doesn't know hiw to deal with his visions to a point where he decides to use the fremen's faith for his own purposes, then he kinda actually starts to belive that he is a messiah and in the end it felt to me like he's lost again. He has achieved his goals but the fremen are still deifying him and he just doesn't know what to do about that. So he basically leads them to a holy war because that is what they expect from him and he doesn't see any other options, so he just follows the prophecy like everyone else. He seemed kinda uncertain in that last scene. Again, this is just my first impressions so I most likely missed a lot of things and I didn't read the books. Definetly gonna rewatch it multiple times. With that said about the story and complex themes but I just wanna say that I love action sequences in this movie just as much. Even the very first scene is not really fast, but it feels so dynamic and intense. There's no second without something to focus on. At the same time, the fight scenes have some amazing choreography. So, while the movie is so huge and epic, you can tell they put tons of effort in smaller scenes. In summary, this movie is amazing.

I hope they make movies of the second and third books, the whole story arc of Paul becomes more clear. His struggle with being a messiah, what he wanted to do and what he didn't want to do.

Yes, kind of, Paul never believes he's their messiah, but they force him into that role. He takes that final step because Stilgar is basically going to fall on his own blade so Paul can take his leadership position. The holy war was always going to happen, from the moment Paul first stepped on Dune. Paul ends up trying to direct a hurricane to cause the least destruction, while at the same time being carried by it.

One of my favorite books of all time. Part 1 made me so happy. They FINALLY put together a Dune movie. I can't wait to see Part 2. It's the first time I've enjoyed anything Dune that wasn't the book since the 2000 Sci-Fi mini-series (We dare not discuss the sequel mini-series...).

Though the one good thing about the 1984 film was the music being done by Toto.

I am going to see the movie this weekend. So looking forward to it. This is one of the few movies you have to see on the big screen to fully appreciate and grasp it.

Chani falling out of love with him because he thinks he is Space Jesus is my favorite change from the books and something I was personally hoping to see. So yayayaya Zendaya we understood a man thinking he is the messiah is tots red flags! Go surf on your giant sand worm!

Funny I feel the new Dune movies are more boring (while still good) than the Lynch version... Still like that one the most.

I loved the movie. I agree with pretty much everything you’re saying. On a side note I just want to say that I’ve been watching your videos and the Nostalgia Critic videos for close to 15 years now, and I love your passion, humor, and insight that bring to movies. Thank you for your entertaining and also insightful movie reviews, whether its in the nostalgia critic format or your more straight up reviews like this. Your content has definitely helped me through some things, and it makes me happy that you’re still passionate about movies and are still making videos.

Not that I _want_ to watch you eat, but the least you can do is not spam my notifications with videos I can't watch. Why is that video members-only anyway? Who would pay to watch you eat?

Overall I quite enjoyed Part 2, it was also quite the IMAX experience. The first 3/4th of the movie was pretty strong IMO, did a real good job showing Jessica becoming the Reverend Mother and Paul becoming Muadib of the Fremen; which basically just got montaged in Lynch's 84 movie. For me this new movie really falters at the end however. The final battle is basically over before it even begins, and then after breaking into the pyramid (why was that kept LOL), they then proceed to the main city... it's just very disjointed. Also it would have been far more satisfying for Alia to kill the Baron, that was kind of the point of the book. For all of his plotting he had no way to plan for this little girl who's effectively an adult Bene Gesserit. Admittedly I do have a soft spot for 84 Dune, especially Toto's soundtrack, but there also things I definitely do not care for about it - the Fetus Guild Navigators, the Trash Bag Sardaukar... I know there can never be a perfect adaptation, but it's just a bit frustrating since Villeneuve seems so close. But on the upside general audiences seem receptive to it, and that may be it's greatest triumph, since Dune has typically only been for the very "nerdy".

Please do a Nostalgia Critic review of the 1984 David Lynch movie.

I LOVED Dune Part 1. For Dune Part 2, I'm not sure how I feel about the changes from the book, especially with Chani at the end. It kind of all depends on how they will incorporate it into Dune Messiah. My guess is that Villeneuve will make Dune Part 3 have a DEFINITIVE ending since as it stands now I don't see how they can bring Leto II and Ghanima into the story and make it believable.

If Villeneuve pulls off Dune Messiah (kind of a difficult task; that book is so different from the first and doesn't have as obvious a structure) then we might have another one of the classic trilogies on our hands, up there with LotR and Star Wars. And then like 10 years later we'll get a sequel trilogy adapting Children of Dune and God-Emperor of Dune that aren't as good.

excellent film, but I'm still torn on whether I do or don't like the way they adapted the story and changed it from the book. As noted, it feels like there's meant to be more, and so I feel like I can't really judge that part until I see what it ultimately done with it.

I enjoyed it quite a lot, but not as much as part 1. There were some really cool scenes like the sand worm riding and the black and white colosseum fight, but there were just as many scenes that could've been cool, but they just skipped over entirely. Dune 2 is the most I've personally enjoyed a film in years, it's the first time in years I actually went back and saw it a second time. I was thoroughly engrossed and enjoying myself. To me, this series really feels like modern day Lord of the Rings as in people will be watching it and rewatching it in 20, 30, 40+ years. As for sequels, I personally hope they do books all the way up to God Emperor of Dune. I feel like the ending of that book is perfect way to end the series of what would be a 5 movie series, that book is probably the darkest and most dystopic and it has a hopeful but also sad ending and you can just fill in the blanks of what happens after with your imagination. Books after God Emperor aren't really essential, I feel.

I went to see the first movie in theaters 2 or 3 weeks ago without knowing anything about it, and I had a blast. I saw it because I heard that it was good and that it was a sci-fi movie, and I definitely wasn't prepared for the spectacle I was about to watch. At the beginning, I thought that the movie was ok, not a big deal, but I was hooked to the story by the end of it. I can't wait to see Part 2!

I thought it was an incredible spectacle, and what I think blockbusters should be - have some actual emotion and humanity to go with all the CGI sandworms and machines. With that said, I thought the plot was kind of messy. I don't want to go into spoiler territory just in case, but sometimes it felt like there were plot points left hanging, or that the film kind of stopped for half an hour midway through just to explain some new stuff in detail, rather than introduce it over time. It almost felt like some last-minute editing room decisions. Overall I liked the first one way better.
