The thing I noticed that I haven't heard anyone else talking about, is that when Paul killed Feyd it was a mirror of his fight with Gurney in part 1 where he stabbs Gurney in the shoulder and gets the "look down my lord, you'd have joined me in death" and you see he's been stabbed in the gut.

Bautista played Rabban perfectly, revealing his cowardice. He's brutal because he's a bully. His expression when he turned and ran after catching a glimpse of Muadib was priceless

Yes, lots of callbacks to Part One (as Part One was foreshadowing Part Two), such as Chani’s telling Paul that Dune was beautiful were the opening lines of Part One. Also, I wish people would stop calling this a sequel. As with Tolkien’s LOTR/PJ’s trilogy, it is a continuation, not a sequel. Dune 3 will be a sequel if it comes from Dune Messiah.

In terms of Paul vs Anakin. I didn't see it as Paul embracing the dark side per se. He explained earlier that he can see all of the possible futures now, and there's only one path forward for them to not be defeated by their enemies. It isn't a path he wants to take though. Billions of deaths, a galactic war, not being with Chani, etc. Anakin chose the dark side because he wanted to, Paul is doing what is necessary to protect what he cares about regardless of the personal cost. Like in Loki season 2, Paul has chosen his burden.

Anakin chose the dark side for the same reason you say Paul did: to protect those he cares about. He thought it was necessary. He didn't just wake up and say "the dark side is cool."

There's no real Paul vs Anakin, Star wars was influenced by Dune to begin with. It's more like Anakin's character is/was loosely based on Pauls.

the way the movie ended when Jessica was talking to her daughter about what's gonna happen now. gave me attack of the clones vibe with the holy wars have begun. got chills and a fat smile on my face

After watching this film I have never wanted to be a filmmaker more. Denis just knows what to do best. The action, tension, scenes of dialouge, worldbuilding, Grieg Frasers cinematography shines. Hans Zimmer the undisputed current goat cooked up another masterful score. What more do I have to say?

the third act for me is the strongest, the fights at the end and TC performance was perfect

I’m not a big Sci-Fi nut, but THIS movie melted my face off and OBLITERATED my fucking brain!!! 🤯 What a phenomenal achievement in film, one that’ll be talked about for decades to come! The bar has been raised in massive ways. Insanely gripping and beautiful! Ps. Nolan should be grateful, that Dune 2 moved out of 2023, cause this BEAST is a lock for BEST PICTURE, at the Oscars next year!

I think the moment that changed for Paul, was where he’s told that he has to challenge Stilgar to be allowed to speak and he refuses and gives a speech anyway almost defiantly against their ways and traditions… it was sort of that moment where I was like “ahh, he’s putting himself above everyone and their beliefs now” it was like the Paul that respected their traditions and such was gone

“Don’t waste your water, not even on a tear” 👏🏾 that scene chef kiss. Feyd response to Paul saying their cousins straight savage 🔥. Baustisa’s acting has greatly improved. Loved the theme of Feyd being unhinged, but having honor in battle in which foreshadows his death.

I heartily concur! Genius Denis and Brilliantly Multi-Talented Zendaya and Timothee' should be remembered at OSCAR time. Greig, Javier, Austin, Rebecca, Hans, and the Sound technicians should be, too.

There was one point in the film that was jarring to me. When Paul has to cross the desert by himself to prove that he’s the chosen One. Chani appears to help him out and they are practicing the sand walk. Then ALL OF THE SUDDEN it cuts to an entire group of Fremen hiding under the sand with Paul and Chani. That was confusing to me and it almost seemed like a scene was cut there.

Dune part 1 and 2 combined just may be the best science fiction movie ever made! And this is coming from a huge star wars fan! Both part 1 and 2 were incredible theater experiences! I was lucky to have seen part 1 in the cinema back in 2021,and I have been a huge Dune fan ever since.

Comparing any of this to the Star Wars prequels is a disservice to Dune. I would compare Paul's rise to that of Michael Corleone.

I loved how it shows Paul use Gurney's combat training from part 1 in the final fight with a blade strategically positioned to kill his opponent.

Honestly, I think the worst part about this film is that how badly people misinterpret the film. It’s also masterful in how Denis adapts concepts that will be addressed in Messiah, because of how Paul was portrayed very much how we see him in part 1 for all of the book. But through Denis’ knowledge of the world, he manages to make this adaptation one of the truest adaptations while also going in a very different direction than the books. It’s a technical masterpiece, sure. But the more I think about the writing, the better the film is. As well as providing depth to all of the different factions especially the Fremen, which are not as spiritually divided as the film. Denis tells the story Herbert wishes he told imo.

Enjoyed the hell out of Part Two today and will see it at least 3 more times in theaters. As of this moment however, I think I prefer the first film. If I had to nitpick anything I’d say my biggest gripes would be the first hour not having much variety to it and Feyd probably should have been introduced sooner. Also Zimmer’s score just borders on noise sometimes with no melodies or music. Paul and Chani’s flute love song is nice though. Now I just need to be put into hibernation for 5-10 to make the Messiah movie get here quicker.

Seen it twice. Even better the 2nd time. It’s hard to top the IMAX but even seeing it in a regular theater, it was still impressive and had amazing sound design all throughout the film. Loved it! Wanna see it again!

That was an incredible film. Saw it once in Imax and again last night on a local bigscreen. I loved how they spent a good chunk with the fremen and then ramped up with introducing Feyd Rautha. Impressed how they film that arena scene in IR. One of the best films I've seen in a while. Bring on Messiah.

I was just in pure awe after seeing Dune: Part Two. I saw it last Thursday afternoon and there wasn't that many in the audience in a IMAX theater with a young crowd, but for everybody that was there they didn't get up right away because I know they just were blown away by what they just saw. I actually bought the first movie on 4K DVD because I felt it was worth owning knowing the positive reception Part Two was getting and after seeing the first I was so ready for the next and that was how to do it. You said it Kristian. The movie is a spectacle!

It was hunting and terrifying. The visible change in Paul and his mother was so hunting. I loved it. They stayed true to the book.

I feel like I’ve seen Denis mature and change so much as a filmmaker. Started following him around 2015 when I saw Sicario in theaters and he offers me something new and insightful every time. Will go down as one of the greatest all time and I’m so happy for him with these two films.

Just got home from the theatre and wow, just wow I’m blown away 10/10. Was so happy Josh Brolins character survived

As a fan of the books I loved the ending. For the book readers Denis added the part after taking the water of life where Paul tells Jessica that Chani will come to understand, that he has seen it. But at the very end he chose to leave out Paul telling everyone in the room that he has no intention of being with Irulan, that this is just a political marriage to cement his rule and Irulan will have no power. Then we see Chani betrayed leave into the desert. Also In the book we dont see the Holy War(Jihad) start at the end the way the movie did. I like it because it makes the movie feel like a cliff hanger. Like we know there’s no way the Messiah movie isn’t coming. The Fremen becoming the most powerful group of people in the empire plus Paul starting to terraform Arrakis will probably be used to bring Chani back to his side. Without Chani and Paul’s love Messiah doesn’t work. So I love that Denis made sure to let us know in that scene with Jessica that he too knows the story of Messiah hinges on that love.

I'm in the UK. Saw it midnight yesterday and then again few hours ago. Amazing.

I watched 2 last night. I loved every minute of it. The amount of talent in every aspect of film making is truly amazing!! I had goosebumps four or five times throughout the movie, and that’s just the score!!! They also had a lot of cojones in getting the weirder part of the book in there and even bigger to get it right! Dennis nailed it!!!

Just saw it. It's not even in the same conversation as Empire Strikes Back or The Two Towers. Honestly I think the first film is structurally better overall. Better paced. More compelling political intrigue. This film is 2 hours of straight Stilgar hero worship. It was good but it's being severely over hyped right now.

Watched it a few hours ago. I feel like I'm going insane, I need to see it again!

Rewatched DUNE 1 last night, after being blown away by DUNE 2 IMAX on Thursday - and 100% agree that seeing 2 has made 1 quite a bit better for me. I didn't read the books either and now knowing the path Paul was on, I understand all of the seeds so much better that were planted in the first film. And also thought of the Empire Strikes Back comparison - more so in the 'I felt I needed humor in the picture, and yet I couldn't have gags.' quote from Irvin Kirshner. Dune 2 implemented that perfectly. Cheers!

Denis and his cinematographer Greig Fraser shot the Giedi Prime scenes in infrared to get that black and white, porcelain look to the Harkonnens.

Seen last night amazing 5/5! Also watched it with my mate who Is Australian film editor so it was interesting to get he’s take on it! The only thing he said was Feyd introducing was to long other wise loved it!

I just got home from seeing it in IMAX and I literally just sat there in awe as the credits rolled over Zimmer’s score. This film knocked me out of my socks. Denis made some choices that diverged from the book, some of them I miss, others I’m glad for the change. I would’ve liked Paul to have shed a tear for Jamis, as that was seen in the book by the Fremen as a sign of selfless reverence for their fallen brother. I also would have liked to see the greenhouse from the book. I do love the way the Fremen were divided as fanatics and nonbelievers, and felt it provided more realistic depth to the people that I don’t recall getting from the books. Performances were incredible all around, but Chalamet surprised me with the gravitas he commanded in the third act after his turn. Butler absolutely nailed his portrayal of Feyd in my opinion. And I loved the moments of comedy from Stilgar peppered throughout to ease the tension a bit. Greig Fraser killed the cinematography, and Hans Zimmer’s score somehow both stood out and blended into the movie so amazingly well. I could gush for days about this film. Absolute masterpiece. I can’t wait to watch Part 1 and Part 2 back to back.

I like a lot about this movie. I do think the hype is overselling it a bit. There is no momentum to the pace of this movie. In many ways it feels like a events happen one after the other without any mounting tension. I think that could have been fixed if we had gotten to see how Paul as The Fremen leader slowly got the upper hand over the harkonnen. They started out already spanking Bautista. And if that was the case, they should have brought in Fayd Ratha sooner and have the battle of armies be more pronounced so that by the time Fayd and Paul face off their is a more tangible rivalry based on that long war / conflict they’ve been in. It just doesn’t have a great sense of pacing. The ending rules but that 2nd act is so languid with little to no new info being communicated on our end. And we don’t even get a sense of the sublime thru environment like AVATAR 2 does so well with the underwater sequences. Dune 2 is really good but there’s just some stuff keeping it from greatness unfortunately.

I'm going to say it was overhyped, but still excellent. To put my opinion in more context, I had expectations so high, they were practically getting burned by the sun lol. But the movie still reached the moon, maybe even Venus. It's not perfect, it's not the best movie in history, but it is still EXCELLENT!!! I mean, no movie is perfect, and only one movie can be the best, and even then, the "best" movie ever is subjective. I will say that this movie deserves awards, and may well be the best movie of the year. I would tell people not to set unreasonable expectations for it, but that it's still a great, solid movie. It does the book justice, no small feat for a story once considered unfilmable. I'd recommend seeing it in theaters, and seeing it in IMAX. I give it 4.5/5 stars.

The right amount of hype. My friend and I just got done with our third viewing and have 3 more to go. This movie just keeps getting better with each subsequent watching. I would’ve loved if Denis would’ve taken the movie to the three hr mark to include a few small things like slightly longer end battle sequence and rabban/gurney fight, short snippet of Paul and the southern Fremen fighting to get to the Emperor, etc

I absolutely enjoyed just seeing a film that was true cinema and spectacle. I had chills with some of those battle scenes & with some of the scenes with Paul finally becoming who he was supposed telling the fremen who he is. with the hanz zimmer score on top of it I’m definitely seeing again. It’s so refreshing to see a sci-fi film with this kind of scale too it

I finally watched D2 this morning. I loved it so much! I was so impressed with everyone.

Just got done seeing it. What an experience. The only complaint is not enough Austin Butler! Man did he ever just pull you in. Every scene he was in, he just grabs you and demands attention.

Loved this movie Villeneuve is a master. I can't wait to see it again. There's something about the way he shot this movie that i always felt a little sad when they move to a new scene. I couldn't take my eyes off of it. Loved it!

I originally watched Dune Part 1 in the cinema back in 2021. I knew nothing about the books. I don't remember how I felt after seeing it, but until recently, I never went back and re-watched it. A lot of the Lore, I have trouble wrapping my brain around (in terms of explaining it out loud) that being said, both movies are incredible, and I'm going to pay attention to Denis V in the near future.

Rabban was always supposed to fail with Feyd coming in like a Messiah.

Seen it last night in a Regal RPX theatre. It’s literally a MASTERPIECE!!

All of these figures are just mere puppets in the hands of the sisters that what I noticed. Paul was made by his mother into a power hungry character that was also lead by dynasty kind of like Anakin. The movie wasn't hyped enough in my opinion it was a great movie 9.8/10 for me.

This film was everything!!! It satisfied everything I hoped for with the second half of the Dune book. The cinematography and sound mix was so great!!!!! I’m even more excited for the Bene Gesserit show now!!!! Dune: Part Three or Dune: Messiah is going to be INSANE!!!!!! 🙌🔥🙌🔥🙌🔥

I liked part one a lot, but I love part two! The entire time I sat in the theatre watching it all I could think was this is why I love cinema, this is why movie theatres were invented! Dune 2 is a true cinematic experience. And, yes, I read the book.

I think this movie had an editing issue. Austin Butler should have been introduced WAY earlier in the film. It felt like it was over an hour and a half in, and it just completely lessens the impact of their fight at the end. He was easily the best part. Too much time in the desert. Should have intercut more with other things going on. It was a visual spectacle but story wise I feel lile its filled with holes (I rralize im on an island).

I freaking loved when Paul turns to the darkside. Anakin is one of my favorite characters in SW because I grew up with the prequels. And seeing how Paul was inspiration for Anakin makes me love both properties even more. I want to try read all first 3 Dune books but i'm affraid if the writing is going to be too sophisticated for a newbie.

I’d say the hype was on point. It wasn’t overly hyped or under hyped. Great movie, absolutely loved it. I love both of these movies and I see them as one really long movie. Instant classic.

Thanks for your fantastic review Kristian. I saw it last night with my son in IMAX, here is my review. Dune: Part One was my favourite movie of 2021. Dune 2 is a masterpiece. It has been a very long time since a movie has left me speechless. It is Denis Villeneuve’s magnum opus. Very much like how Christopher Nolan crowned his career with Oppenheimer last year, this is Villeneuve’s greatest ever movie. Similar to Peter Jackson's, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003), Dune 2 represents another evolution of cinema as an art form. I don't use that word lightly. Like a vice, the story locks you in from the opening frame and at just 15 minutes shy of 3 hours, this movie absolutely flies by, not once during it's runtime was I bored. The only downside is my cinema going adventure's of 2024 has peaked with Dune: Part Two, nothing will compare to this movie for the rest of the year. So, the best way to get my head straight after watching it is to split it up; Cinematography Every aspect of how this movie looks is frankly staggering. DP Greig Fraser not only makes each frame look like a stunning photograph, his use of camera angles, lighting and the natural environment is amazing. The battle scenes are jaw dropping and the sense of scale, especially the sand worms in IMAX is eye watering. I had spine tingles for most of the movie. Sound and Score The sound is incredible, as I saw it in IMAX (which I implore you to do if able) leaves you shaken in your seat. You will never forget where and when you first saw and heard those sand worms. The score by the legendary composer Hans Zimmer is equally superb and is used to amazing effect. Cast As for the cast, each member of the star studied line-up absolutely bring their A game to the table. This movie makes Timothée Chalamet a man. Gone is the petulant son of Duke Leto Atreides (Oscar Isaac). I think Chalamet is fast becoming this generation's DiCaprio. Zendaya was equally superb as his partner Chiani, as she continues to show that she is one of the leading actresses of her generation. After his breakout role in Elvis (2022) and Apple TV+ series Masters of the Air (2024) Austin Butler is a revelation as the psychopathic Feyd-Rautha, beloved nephew to Baron Harkonnen. No Country for Old Men alum Josh Brolin and Javier Bardem resume their respective roles as Gurney Halleck and Stilgar offering gravitas and wise council to the younger cast who take centre stage. Florence Pugh as the emperors daughter Princess Irulan is excellent as is the great veteran actor Christopher Walken (In a small but pivotal role) as the Emperor. My only “complaint” as such is that Dave Batista's character Beast Rabben felt under served and was reduced to a bit of a one note character screaming out orders whilst slipping further out of the good graces of his uncle. On that subject, Baron Harkonnen (Skarsgard) himself so central to the original film is also somewhat side lined in this second part of the movie. Action Whilst I in no way shared this sentiment, there were some people who said Dune: Part One was boring and lacked action. The same cannot be said for this continuing instalment. The action in this movie is breathtakingly shot and choreographed. Whether it was wide scale battles or hand to hand combat it felt exhilarating, organic and primal. Special Effects A seamless blend of top drawer CGI and jaw dropping practical effects. Effortlessly combined with filming on location in Abu Dhabi. Dune: Part One and Dune: Part Two, is this generations Star Wars. It however goes further than that, it is Star Wars for grown-ups. There is nothing Disney has done with Star Wars to rival or even come close to Villeneuve's incredible movie. It makes the recent MCU and DC movies look what they are, light weight tensionless candy floss crap. What Villeneuve has achieved here is simply staggering. It reminds you of why the medium of cinema exists. It is a cinematic masterpiece. Denis Villeneuve and team deserve all the adulation, box office success and awards they can get. My Verdict - Unmissable

Both Arrivals and Prisoners are better. Id argue the first film is structurally above this film as well. Still a good movie though.

I was SO ready to hear the bagpipes at the last battle and was a little bit sad tbh 😭🫡

Saw the movie Friday and my friend saw it Saturday. I a non-book reader and him a book reader. We had a 3 hour discussion about the film. Us both thinking it is an incredible cinematic achievement. He threw around words like perfect and 10/10. I on the other hand, Loved it a lot more than that but didn't think it was perfect (Plus I hate numeric scores for art). It's a masterpiece for sure. And now has become my all time favourite movie. It does what I've always wanted from Sci-fi. Make me believe this exists. And from Dune: Part One I felt the wheels turning and totally loved it. Then Dune: Part Two came and pushed the boundaries for me. I think this is one of the best movies ever made and has ascended to godhood in the movie pantheon. I don't see how this doesn't get Best Picture in 2025. Every aspect of this movie is astronomical. From Timothée Chalamet's amazing performance (My favourite), to Austin Butler, Rebecca Ferguson, to fucking Dave Baustista. I could talk for days about the masterful hand used to create this movie.

Haven’t seen it yet but can’t wait

Did a Dune double feature with my wife yesterday. Started Dune 1 at noon and went straight to Dune 2 at 4. We enjoyed both, thought the politics and visuals were the strongest elements. Weakest points for us was definitely the Voice/prophecy elements which took a back seat in the first movie which is probably why the first was our favorite. The only gripe I have is that throughout the entire story Paul was using his mother and the prophecy as a means to get his revenge as a political ploy, going as far as to defy the Voice in the first movie. In the second we get to the end and he just decides, "I guess I'll willingly start the Holy War that I've spent two full movies trying to avoid". Like I said, a really strong pair of movies, would enjoy a third but isn't required, we liked them both a lot but had one or two gripes. 4.5/5 Schmoes for the pair as a whole (4.75 for the 1st and 4.25 for the 2nd).

Loved it. Seen it twice already in Dolby Cinema. Yall have to see it in dolby, probably my favorite movie experience ive ever had. The worm ride scene was better than disneys soarin.

Paul doesn’t turn to the “dark side” as the film says “there are no sides” all these characters are complicated human beings. To reduce them down to “goodie” “baddie” does a massive disservice to the source material. Paul is a tragic character either by accident or his own cowardice.

I wouldn't call it "The Dark Side" but rather he needs to choose the path of "Necessary Evil" to be able to achieve his revenge over the Harkonnens and the Emperor. In Messiah, it's even more complicated with the choices Paul has to make. The story of Paul Muad'Dib is a tragedy above all else.

@@zigurdur92 That's a simplified, easy version. In Messiah he doesn't choose the "dark side" and it's also tragic. In Children, Alia is the main tragic character, mostly because of others choices, not her own.

Most, not all, of my issues with the film were that I wanted MORE of a particular scene or story beat. Otherwise it was a brilliant sci-fi epic!

Paul fights at the end as a last try to escape his future, He bould not see the future past a fight with Feyd. Love the movie but it needed thectwo year time jump to make sensem

Kristian, you’ve gotta give the books a go, cause the “dark side” is a bit simplified and the treatment of Paul after he takes the water of life was one of my only disappointments in the film. Paul’s predicament is more like seeing all possible futures, he is trying to take the least monstrous path…even though it will also involve starting a holy war and building on his own myth. There is a scene in Part One that really did a better job of selling that conflict, and I would have liked a bit more time where you were rooted with Paul in that part of the book. Instead that’s really when the POV of the film shifts to Chani.

Loved it! I would have rather seen Alia give the Baron the Gob Jabbar like she did in the book and have him die that way, but I understand why they did what they did and shortened the time period. Dune 1 & 2 - 9.5/10, and spectacular experience. Anytime you try to convert a book like this to a movie, there will always be changes. Same thing happened in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, in which I saw 13 times in the theater. I saw The Phantom Menace 13 times in the theater as well. I would go see Dune 2 another 12 times in the theater, definitely! (Checking to see how much PTO I have..)

I needed that about 30 more minutes... because that final scene with chani .......

Movie was so good my only complaint is that the first book wasn’t broken out into 3 movies rather than 2. Just felt a little too chaotic and fast paced when there is soooo much potentially untapped development

Greatest film since LOTR. I hesitate to even say that because I have such love for LoTR. That being said, no film has ever made me feel like Dune 2 did. I can’t explain it. I was daydreaming for hours afterwards. Still episodes now.

Just saw it. I really enjoyed it!! It got a little slow for me at times though. It was an epic film.

Fun fact: Paul has the Bene Gesserit control over every atom of his body (read the book), both from Jessica's training and from the presence of all the memories of the Reverend Mothers so that, even if Feyd's knife stab to him had been fatal to any man including him, Paul would have been able to control his micro-physiology to heal himself from that wound. Feyd did not stab him in the novel or the David Lynch interpretation, but still. He easily could have. Which is probably what happened in the final knife-fight scene here. 😊

Once he drank the water of life he wasn’t really Paul anymore. He had all the knowledge and wisdom of all the Reverend Mothers past, combined with the clear foresight of all potential futures. Spending his life with Chani wasn’t an option after that. Throughout both films it’s shown that Paul needs to die for the Kwisatz Haderach to rise. He needs to drink the water of life to be able to see WHY he needed to drink it. Paul can’t see why his destiny is required before he has clear foresight… the scene where Jamis tells him he needs to see. Nothing will make sense until he can “see”…

He spends his life with Chani. They have children. He just can't marry her. Irulan is his political wife. He straight up tells her they will never share a bed. But there are political forces trying to destroy them both. And their love for each other.

It would be nice to see a TV series of the same quality about the Bene Gesserit!
