    Fun Fact: The role of Hades is one of James Woods' all-time favorite characters. So much so, any time Disney needs him to reprise the character for any cartoon show and video game, such as Hercules (1998) or Kingdom Hearts, he has agreed to do so. When this film was about to go over-budget, he offered to refund his salary and finish the film for free. Disney decided against this, and finished the film anyway.

    The only time he didn’t voice him was for a single singing line in Mickey’s House of Villains where Rob Paulsen subbed, but then he did Hades’s other singing line in the song. Kinda weird since both lines are just speak-singing anyway (and James isn’t a singer) but oh well.

    Hades is my favorite too. An interesting comparison between him and Hercules I always found ironic was that Hades keeps every deal he makes with Hades but Hercules breaks the only deal he makes with Hades, so Hades acts more heroic than the supposed hero of the story in this regard atleast.

  • @MisterSmith00

    @MisterSmith00

    3 ай бұрын

    @@mikecabral2420THAT’S an interesting point…you’ve actually stumbled across the peculiar notion of what “heroism” is, in general. Is it sticking to your word no matter what? Admirable…if your intentions are noble. But then, what is “noble”? Is it achieving worthy deeds? Something no one has done before? That’s the classical notion. Is it going against your own ideals; if it means protecting those who can’t? Or it is destructive to yourself? I like the subtle theme of that particular movie…a series of flawed people; making flawed decisions. Hades has a HUGE chip on his shoulder because he got an unenviable job of wrangling dead people…and his brother is sort of a jerk about it. Megara was betrayed by her infatuation with an unfaithful man; and now she’s got trust issues. Hercules has never fit in; and desires adoration so that people accept him. …what makes the people “heroes” are their capacity to overcome their particular “beefs” in healthy ways. Hades chose to unshackle horribly destructive forces, and arrange the murder of his brother’s child. Megara chose to allow herself to trust again. Hercules came to realize the difference between being a celebrity; and self-sacrifice. The difference between power vs. strength.

    Goob was just so hilarious in a way that also emphasized the message of the movie so much. His lingering on ONE bad situation as a kid that, in retrospect wasn't more than a hiccup and most would let go, ultimately ruins his life. So what does he do? Completely blames Louis and sets out to destroy him 😂😂 I love the way he so in deep with his own self-pity that he's inherently baffled why things go wrong for him. He just never correlates yelling at potential adoptive parents or ignoring his classmates to his loneliness- its all because Louis made him miss a ball in a little league game. In a way Goob just never grows up 😂 Then to couple him with a non-verbal but brilliant villain like Doris, who has to keep working in spite of him solely to remain inconspicuous, it's just a fantastic combination

    My favorite comedic moment with Ratigan was when he was threatening Mr. Flaversham. After Flaversham refused to cooperate, Ratigan brooded for a moment before telling him that he was bringing his daughter here as well; as he winds up the toy, Flaversham made for her birthday. As the toy dances, Ratigan makes a thinly veiled threat to him about his daughter's safety, and gently picks up the toy. Then to emphasize the threat, Ratigan grits his teeth and squeezes the toy until it breaks. Ratigan then makes this mockingly sad look at the broken toy, looks at Flaversham with the same expression, and then erupts "FINISH IT, FLAVERSHAM!!!". Defeated, the toy maker goes back to work; while Ratigan walks away, humming to himself, and then quips "Oh, I love it when I'm nasty!".

    What I find most interesting about Hades’ design is how his flaming hair works. It’s no secret that fire and heat is often connected to anger in fiction. Heck, Anger the emotion from Inside Out literally blows his stack when he rages. But what’s funny about Hades is that he’s actually getting colder when he’s angry because blue flames are hotter than yellow/orange flames. It’s a very ironic emotional feature.

  • @wolfskinchanger

    My personal theory is that he hates having to constantly project 'cool and composed'; that he's angry all the time and not allowed to show it, so his rage just keeps burning hotter under the surface until something snaps because there's nowhere for him to safely vent.

  • @SangoSon12

    @SangoSon12

    My theory is that when he gets angry, his flames spread out across this body instead of being concentrated in one spot, which could spread out the heat and thus make the flames less hot. You can think about it as blue flames being him in control as you mostly see blue flames in controlled settings, like a science lab or kitchen, compared to when they spread and turn red and orange, like wild fires, when he loses his temper. While the blue flames in a lab or kitchen are hotter, they're less dangerous than wild fires.

Of course James Woods is great on his own, but it's Hades and Meg together that just bring that effortless chemistry we all love. The cartoonish style really works for that humour, an exaggerated slapstick. Take the sequence of Yzma being booted from the house, she’s tarred, feathered and piñata’d, and it’s absolutely hilarious that Pacha’s kids are doing this to her. Kronk is on his own level, too stupid to grasp what Yzma is really going for but completely loyal to her whilst off in his own world. He elevates the Angel vs devil on the shoulder gag by showing Yzma, Kuzco and Pacha, and by extension the audience, what he looks like conversing with them and they’re not present. All three have WTF reactions.

    An interesting creative direction Disney took was making Ratigan a Rat. He wasn't in the source material; just a large mouse who operated out of the sewers and had that name. That's why he was so sensitive to being called a rat orgionally. I feel the angle Disney went with works so much better considering his personality. Deep down he is just a crook but he needs to build himself up as some grand being, greater than everyone else. Seeing him overreact in such a manner when just forced to face the reality of his species not only deepens the psychological aspects of his character but lends to some amazing comedy! Especially the few times where he just nearly loses it but straitens himself out to just say or do something malicious in a fake calm tone. It's SO funny and fitting! He "composes" himself just to do what you'd expect of a rat..but with an air of sophistication.

    An extra fun detail to hammer in the fact that Ratigan is indeed a rat is that all the mice characters have 4 fingers. Ratigan has five.

    I finally watched The Great Mouse Detective in its entirety for the first time a few weeks ago, and Ratigan had me in stitches. His facial expressions alone when he's pissed off and about to have a frickin' aneurism are gold! 🤣 One of my favorites is when he's leaning upside down while declaring one of his rules of taxing the parasites, which includes little children--that gleeful grin at that point at that poor kid!🤣

I would've included: .Tamatoa- from Moana (2016) .Duke of Weaseltown, I mean Weselton- From Frozen (2013) .Dr. Facilier- from The Princess and the Frog (2009) .Edgar-from The Aristocats (1970)

    James Woods really did give a highly entertaining performance as Hades with many outright hilarious quotes that did get the laughs out of me. Whenever would be his angry moments with his henchmans, Pain and Panic such as they lie to him that Hercules is not died, Pain is wearing Herc's Merchandise and Panic is talking a drink. As well as the moments when he's not angry like when he tells the titans that they going in the wrong direction to Olympus and Pegasus blows his fire hair out.

    I think we can all agree that we all come back to watch Disney's great classics solely for the villains. Because they're not here to be misunderstood or preach a message for modern audiences or tell you how to feel and should feel. They're here to make you laugh and enjoy how evil they can be. Raise a glass to the greatest rogue's gallery of movie history!!!
