Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is a 2023 American computer-animated superhero film directed by Jeff Rowe, who co-wrote the screenplay with Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, Dan Hernandez, and Benji Samit. It is the seventh theatrical Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film and a reboot of the series. The film stars the voices of Micah Abbey, Shamon Brown Jr., Nicolas Cantu, and Brady Noon as the title team, alongside a supporting ensemble voice cast that includes Ayo Edebiri, Maya Rudolph, John Cena, Rogen, Rose Byrne, Natasia Demetriou, Giancarlo Esposito, Jackie Chan, Ice Cube, Paul Rudd, Post Malone, and Hannibal Buress. In the film, after years of being sheltered from the human world, the Turtles set out to be accepted as normal teenagers through acts of heroism. The brothers go on a hunt for a mysterious crime syndicate, but trouble arises when an army of mutants is unleashed upon them.

I always felt a little bad for the turtles. All the mutant turtles in the world were brothers. It doesn't leave a lot of options open for companionship or anything romantic. They could date cross species I suppose, but it is still very limited.

The ending with the Turtles and Splinter becoming publicly accepted was so wholesome and not really something I’ve seen before in the franchise as a veteran. I was shocked and delighted. And I LOVED that the villains all joined the family, so that the Turtles and Splinter wouldn’t be alone in the familial sense.

The thing about April is that the most well known version is the Reporter from the 80's cartoon, but literally every single version of April has been a completely new and original character. She's rarely the same between each iteration. Sometimes she's an adult, sometimes she's a child, sometimes she's white, sometimes she's black, sometimes she's a reporter, sometimes she's running an antique shop.

It made me realize that this is a new generation of turtles and that having some changes made is important to keep TMNT from becoming stale. So after a second rewatch, I liked it a lot more and had a fun experience. Definitely worth checking out.

I always liked the 2003 version. The animation style was reminiscent to the street fighter qnime that got ne into enjoying anime and other shows like Avatar, it was more adult in some of the concepts and story arcs. Not too adult, but it did bring in more elements of the comics, and it was the first animated version to give the turtles different looks and not looking like a copy paste of each other with different colors. The future stuff got too silly imho, bringing in bots that seemed like mechanical knockoffs of the osmosis Jones duo. But still a fairly decent show.

TMNT is like one of the few properties that can be interpreted in so many ways. I don’t think there will ever be a definitive TMNT cause people will like different stuff and as they continue to make different versions of the TMNT, people will change their preferences. Some prefer the Nick one, other like arise, you liked the original cartoon. Neither is bad and we shouldn’t be trying to pinpoint the best of the best as it’s stupid.

That don't mean we can't whinge about things we liked a lot in one not being in the other. Even as a babee watching the '03 series I didn't like how every turtle was just a recolor of the others but holding on to a different prop. So Rise was right up my alley design-wise, it just took me a while to realize that I'd love to actually watch it, too. So to see that kinda toned-down-to-removed in this movie left a bit of a sore first impression, tells you hwat.

Me and my best friend, who are big TMNT fans, went to see this on her birthday, which was the day the movie dropped, and we had a blast from beginning to end! Before going in, I was a little skeptical about the movie at first - ONE of the reasons being that the Turtles actually sounded like kids (while thinking Donnie sounded way too young from the trailers). However, after watching this, it's well deserving of the high praise it's receiving. It's now my favorite Turtles movie since TMNT 2007. The young voice actors for the Turtles were great, Donnie being the most hilarious here with his lines and deliveries. I'm surprised that it had a good amount of stuff for older fans. Those early 90s hip-hop tracks reminded me of the original 90s movies, and I couldn't get enough of it. Incredibly charming movie that reminded me of why I'm still a Turtles fan.

I like the fact that they left so much ambiguous that they could incorporate the other stories into it, like TCRI could open up the multiverse in their experiments, or the fact that Splinter’s story starts as a street rat. He could recognize shredder and the foot and be like “I’m sorry boys, there’s more to my story than I’ve told” and we get his Hamato Yoshi story. What i liked best is that they have each of the turtles a vibe, but it didn’t overtake their character. In the end, they’re still teenager brothers, who are into each others things enough that scenes like Leo’s speech at the end doesn’t feel out of place.

The reason being is that based on the original concept where Splinter learns as a rat in a cage without the mutagen didn't really make too much sense, that having him really just learn from random shit he found makes more sense to me amazingly.

When it comes to the lady villain you mentioned, her name is Cynthia Utrom, so that last name of hers should set off a lot of flags regarding a certain brain-like guy. Whether or not that leads in that direction we'll have to wait and see, but c'mon, with a name like that there's going to be SOME sort of connection. Kid-April's been a peeve of mine since the 2012 show (which is one of the best TMNT cartoons, mind you), but I think this movie got the idea right and this version I found to be one of the more likable ones. She's way more chill and the writers aren't trying to force her into the whole "action girl" thing and instead highlighting her smarts.

I was a 90's kid so I got a TINY but of the 80's show but I don't remember much and I wasn't really allowed to watch it, then I grew up with the 2003 iteration, so I'm used to April and TMNT in general being reimagined, so April being a journalist again was kind of an interesting nod to the original to me. Rise of the TMNT was my favorite by far. Side Note Hint: The lady in the movie who wanted a mutant army? Her last name was Utrom...

I consumed a good bit of ninja turtles since I was little (I'm 25). I saw the original movies, 2007, Michael bay, most of the 2003 series, all of 2012, and all of rise. I love this franchise and I feel the opposite what Doug feels about this. I actually really liked the ending *SPOILERS* having them be accepted and recognized by the humans I think was a really nice change as they're always in the shadows never getting to fully experience the human world freely especially with this version as them being true teens and wanting that acceptance, it felt really heartwarming when seeing the humans help them and cheer for them allowing the turtles to live a normal teenage life they always wanted and yearned for. All the other versions of the turtles never got to have that experience so it's nice that they flipped the script and gave that to them

I really like the Graffitti+Blacklight artstyle. One of my favorites things about the movie is definitely the Lighting. Also greatly love the other message of "Maybe, um, just TRY to do the right things for the right reasons? You may find what you wanted all along." April's line along the line of "I was doing it for myself, but watching you make so many mistakes trying to get what you want made me think differently" was kinda raw. It was an interesting take to make their motivation very childish for the most part. And the Hate Humans plot was definitely interesting with the differing perspectives and ways they utilized it with all the mutants AND Stockman. Especially Splinter's development. Definitely love all the designs too, april and Stockman are my favorite humans, Donnie and Bebop definitely my favorite mutants. Also greatly love that it's not just the Leo and Raph show for once, every brother basically gets equal screentime, and I'm glad Leo actually gets development. Also, did you mean Seth Rogan voiced Bebop? The plan for this continuity iverall is to start with the movie, make a two-season show, and end with another movie. And honestly, I haven't really seen much TMNT since the 2012 show so I'm kind of excited to watch some more. The entire motivation behind this movie is so sweet too, like Seth Rogan's wanted to make his own TMNT movie since the very first when he was a kid, and watching Spiderverse inspired him on how to achieve it lol

In this movie Leo voiced by Nicholas Cantu and he is the main voice of blue cat Gumball from the Amazing world of Gumball. Coincidence? Or there is an option in contact every actor who wants to play Leonardo must have over blue characters in his resume?))) Should we wait new interpretation, where Leo will voice by someone from Avatar 2 cast?)))

This honestly might be my favourite TMNT movie as the teenage voice actors truly make these characters feel organic and even ironically humanized in a way that makes you love them and want to see them grow and the choice to have them as actual teenagers is an inspiring choice that phenomenally worked. I also love the animation and how it feels messy and filthy in a good way that really resonates with the characters and story. I really love the ending especially, seeing how the turtles and mutants are actually accepted by humanity and get a chance to live semi normal lives so early in their carers is such a bold and beautiful arc that is very refreshing for the Turtles.

I’ve always been a tangential fan of the Turtles. I enjoy it when I see them, but I’m not obsessed and don’t go out of my way to watch more than a few episodes every few years. Except for Rise. Holy shit I love Rise. The first episode didn’t give me the best impression. Didn’t hate it, but didn’t love it to see more. And then the Rise movie came out and blew me away, making me go back and realize I was missing what was by far my favorite iteration of the Turtles. I love it so much, and i implore anyone who thinks it looks decent to give it a real shot, because it made me connect with the four turtles in a way I’ve never really cared for them, while also being hilarious and gorgeous at the same time. Unfortunately for me, Mutant Mayhem just doesn’t scratch that itch for me that made me love Rise so much. It’s good; I’m glad I saw it, but I didn’t love it and I probably won’t see a sequel unless it promises to step up. The humor and story just don’t seem to be for me, and that’s fine because the series isn’t really for me anymore, but it still leaves me preferring Rise a million times over. There are things I like about this one. I think following Rise’s tradition of pushing Splinter beyond his standard Iroh-esque role is a really smart thing, I like how he’s very justified in not believing in humans, I think the villain is a ton of fun while also having a reasonable motivation and feeling unique, and I do *like* the Turtles and April even if I feel they don’t even come close to comparing to the gold standard Rise set for me But it just seems a lot more childish than Rise. Which, again, perfectly fine for a kids movie to be, but I do think it’s funny a movie with some of the most cussing I’ve seen in a PG film since the creation of PG13 is also what I think is the most childish iteration of the Turtles in long while

I remember back watching the old NC reviews of previous TMNT stuff years ago when I wasn't into it but I always watched every NC episode that came out. Because of that, the info didn't stick so I should go back & re-watch it although I do remember the bashing of Rise, happy to hear Doug has loosened up a bit. I actually absolutely adore Rise, it's a great series when you've seen everything it has offered & know what could have been if Nick didn't cut its life short. With that said, it makes me excited to see Doug plans to watch the 2012 show, it has some amazing moments like dang, I won't say the huge stuff because spoilers but it is such a fun ride & made better when you have TMNT knowledge because it does a lot of call outs to things. Rise does do this too but in smaller ways & I'll go ahead & point out one from Rise, in the mascot episode where Raph is wearing the hippo costume to purchase a new robe for Splinter, Mikey says he thinks his trench coat idea would be better which like, it's easy making jabs at the trench coats but I love it every time it comes up in a series. I won't spoil an amazing trench coat joke from 2012, don't worry. Mentioned that I wasn't a TMNT fan back when I watched the NC reviews of the stuff, yeah well what changed that if you could believe it was watching Rise, had me curious & dip back into the older shows & movies then when I went back to watch Rise again, so many things that went over my head the first time, I caught. I ended up watching 2003 & 2012 simultaneously & I think it's because of that both series are equally as good to me like I can't pick between the two. I feel like 2003 did a better space arc but I'm currently revisiting 2012's space arc for research purposes, long story. I prefer 2012's Professor Honeycutt so while 2003 did it better in regards to the pacing & whatnot, 2012 had such a fun Fugitoid that like he makes the re-watch worth it. I won't say who voices him (spoilers) but they got the PERFECT voice to do him. What ends up giving 2012 slightly more credit would be the characters of the turtles, aside from Donnie, I'm a Donatello fan & I like Rob Paulsen so you'd think this would be perfection, uh yeah... no. 2003 Donatello beats out his 2012 iterations, hands down. I get it, Donnie is a teenager who has never seen a girl before & being raised in the sewer, lack of social skills makes sense but the whole crush on April thing just makes me so uncomfortable. Other than that though, 2012 has my favorite Michelangelo like he might appear dumb at first, do NOT let that fool you! Just because he doesn't know the concept of the silent W or gets things wrong, doesn't make him a moron, he knows a lot of stuff & they play into his ability to adapt a bit. I'm convinced he's the second smartest of the group actually, pay attention to the episodes where Donnie is out of commission. He also uses his brain when it's important to him like he knew how to triangulate a position because he uses that skill to track the pizza delivery guy. I like 2012 Mikey so much that I caught myself shouting "booyakasha" while playing a video game once. Alright so the actual topic? Yeah like Doug said, it's alright. I like Mutant Mayhem but not my favorite. I think Cynthia is supposed to be a stand in for setting up a new Shredder/Krang dynamic which like I'm curious to see because I love how the Shredder & Krang play off of each other in the 87 cartoon, they're like a married couple with Bebop & Rocksteady as kids, why was this not a sitcom? This will definitely go differently. The fact that Utrom is in her name had me wondering if she was ever gonna open her chest up to reveal the squishy brain inside & when that never happened, suppose the obvious reveal will happen in the sequel like come on, she's an Utrom, we know it unless that being in her name is meant to throw people off or something. What I love about the franchise is how it changes & can tell different stories. It would suck getting the same thing over & over so it's cool that it's something that can be told in so many different ways. Sometimes there's shared elements, there can also be new ones, or twists on existing things. It's fun to experience so I welcome whatever people want to bring to the table.

For me, Rise of TMNT is officially my favorite of the versions. Love the animation especially when they get into action scenes, like, I never knew how effective ladders could be in martial arts; love the new designs and them going for them being different turtles I thought that was a lot of fun. I also like the new spin on personalities, like Donnie being a smug genius, and Raph being the bruiser but a big softie, it's definitely a version where they actually feel like teenagers and they also really feel like brothers, they're ride or die for each other but they're also going to stab each other in the back or prioritize their wants. I also really like Rise Splinter, he's the most flawed of them and feels the most human. They had a unique spin for Shredder. Introduced some fun new characters, which they all kinda got their own personal baddies. Gosh, I think Rise had one of the darkest movies to come out for TMNT too. Beautifully animated but brutal. Only thing I don't like was Nick cancelling it mid s2 production. I wasn't ready for it to stop.

Great review. In terms of my favourite one it’s going to be the 2012 version. There is some bias since it is my favourite version that I did technically grow up on since it was my introduction to the franchise, but because that show does what the 80s cartoon with it with Hamato becoming Splinter and having that rivalry between the two bleed into the Kraang and how Turtles stop them, not to mention how the story is structured I thought was genuinely masterful. It is funny how when the the first Bay film came out, even as a 10 year old, I could feel this gritty PG-13 reboot had less stakes and felt more childish and silly than the cartoon for kids that had more tension and suspense, and funnily enough felt more adult. As far as putting together the “perfect TMNT”. For me it is taking what was done with the 2012 show and using the art direction of the TMNT 2007. If I’m being honest while I love the writing of the 2012 show, it has my least favourite look in terms of art direction, even as a kid I wanted it to look more like the 2007 movie, which it couldn’t do I know because it’s a TV show but it could be easily achieved in 2D.

It had waaaay too many pop-culture references to the point where crucial plot points depended on them, and it was too jokey and cynical all the time which was quite tiring for me.
