What makes the CGI in dune so great is that they're not afraid to obscure it with effects which make it look as if it were real objects or backdrops captured on a camera. So often with the marvel type movies do they just have these beautiful renders that are 4k and crisp, shiny and clean. It basically makes them look like early 2000s graphics sometimes.

In fact it's more about the time artist have, these are basicaly the same companies working on Marvel movies and Dune, they just don't have the same time to work on the post production

I have seen materials and textures that were way worse than even an old videogame and near the camera in one of these Marvel movies. The one in which the scarlet witch does things, and other things happen, that were not very good either. IDK, I just remember te horror of that ugly texture and flat material, just awful.

The IMAX 1.43:1 version of the film is just so beautiful. I hope they re-release it before Dune Part 2 this year.

The Visual effects team deserves a 2nd OSCAR for part 2. You know what's on screen is CGI, but you don't think about it until the movie is over. I've rewatched part 1 many times, I've watched part 2, and I don't recall a moment where I thought "umm, no, that looks obviously fake" like in so many other movies.
0:48, I'll never get over how they obviously used an HTC Vive Deluxe Audio Strap (DAS) here, lol. It's a damn good headstrap, and I'm happy they used it in this movie. Super jarring for people like me that have been using the DAS since 2016, and it definitely un-immersed me for a second, lol.

It really annoys me that they released Dune on HBO Max in the standard wide screen aspect ratio. The way the film is shot you need a taller aspect ratio like 16:9 or 4:3 to understand what's going on. The scene that gets affected the worst by this is the sandcrawler scene. I've noticed that you also loose certain details like the ornithopter's wings in the escape scene or the sand blowing off of buildings in Arakeen. If Warner Bros. has a 4:3 version of the movie, why don't they just release it? The movie is already a year old, so it isn't like they'll be losing any large sums of money. It doesn't make any sense.

I hope and pray they are planning another physical/digital release after part 2. Otherwise there's no way to watch the film as intended unless you wait every 10 years for a theatrical rerelease. Lol if DISNEY can release MCU movies in IMAX ratio so can WB easily

Not just wings, if you look at 2:06, the shadow of the flying Ornithopter can also be seen, which just makes this scene more immersive and believable. Can't see it with the Aspect ratio of the Digital release though...

It doesn't look good on a home screen, guys. The IMAX ratio looks good because of the IMAX screen. It's massive. Sorry.

I watched the gross cinematic bluray of 80gb and so wished the frame was fuller.
The reason the VFX works so well is because of Denis’s style of blocking and knowing exactly how he wants a shot to look. Easier to layer in VFX when you are a competent filmmaker instead of altering an entire scene in post with special effects.

Storyboards are king.
I don't know why but seeing the BTS, I feel the need to refuse to believe that so much is CG. The movies completely immersed me into the story that I forgot that I most of it is not real.

And as you can see any version you watch at home is missing about a third or more of the frame. The film is meant to be seen on a true IMAX with a ~4:3 aspect ratio. Only then will you get the full scope.

Работа над фильмом настолько доскональная и качественная, что даже зная, как это было снято, ты веришь в то, что видишь. Это лучшее из пониманий произведения. Жаль, что не все важные и принципиальные аспекты раскрыты.
I would LOVE to view this in 4:3 at home, and 100% disagree that this format won't look good by default on a TV at home. These awesome, epic shots were clearly composed with a more vertial frame in mind than 2.39:1 and would look mind-blowing on a big enough screen in 4k Dolby Vision.
3:11 my favorite detail is the accumulated sand piles on the crevices of the building

Denis took a gamble just doing the first half of the first book, since they weren't going to greenlight a sequel until the first movie did well. Denis has said unofficially he plans to have a trilogy, 2 movies for Dune and 1 movie for Dune Messiah, but I wouldn't really get your hopes up too much for that since he himself doesn't seem to talk about it much. Beyond the second book, I think any more of these movies are extremely unlikely to happen
One of the things that always bugged me about Hollywood movies in decades past was when the added background elements would be in focus, regardless of how far away it was supposed to look. I'm glad that Hollywood has finally stopped doing that.
Great job! So ornithopter was actually an AH-6 haha
2:15 Thats nuts that that shot started in camera and not 100% cgi
Having seen Dune 2 in IMAX 5 times, going back to widescreen will be shitty
crazyyy that they'd do the whole background just to cover it up with another element in front of it with even more particles, @2:44
Pretty nice how the actual helicopters were used in shots for them dragonflies
The Roto! Brilliant VFX
太狂了!!!!
2:17 Was the live-action plate really used in the final shot, or only as reference ? Rotoscoping sand seems horrendous
