Blade Runner 2049 | VFX Breakdown | Framestore

Фильм және анимация

We are thrilled to share our Academy Award and BAFTA winning work on Blade Runner 2049, for which our artists crafted concept artwork used in pre-production, and delivered nearly 300 shots of VFX work in post. Tasked with the creation of large-scale CG environment builds and some challenging animation work, Framestore teamed with VFX Supervisor John Nelson to pay homage to the original picture, whilst creating an atmospheric film of the future.

:-) Good comment, but it needs to be there to get lost in the first place. If all the exteriors of the buildings were just flat and undecorated (if that is even a word) you would notice it in a heartbeat.

except with the majority of science fiction movies these days, the effects are very in your face and don't actually seem connected with the real characters and environments around them. just because a movie like Guardians of the Galaxy or Transformers has a bunch of big, flashy cgi action fests doesn't make it any good. movies like Blade Runner merge the effects with the real characters almost seamlessly, and never in a way where they're trying to show it off. especially in certain scenes with the hologram girl, it looks impressive and weird, but never out of place or cgi'd.

BR 2049 has, objectively, better VFX than almost any film released. That is objective. There have been numerous articles written on how intricate the FX work was on the Joi/K love scene with the other replicant and all of the incredible work that was done with practical FX as well as the ridiculously well done scene with Rachel. Hundreds of movies with better FX? I dare you to name 3. There is a reason BR 2049 won both Best Visual Effects and Best Cinematography at the academy awards, and it is because it has some of the best visuals of any film ever made. To say anything less just goes to show either personal bias, or genuine lack of understanding on what makes amazing visuals.

Well yes but actually no When the art director says he wants a city in fog, he doesn’t just want a city in fog, but actually a CITY in fog. In vfx, when something occludes something else, you don’t think "no one will see it anyway" because you don’t know that you see it’s missing. There’s so many details the human eye is trained to distinguish since birth that the MOMENT something isn’t right, you can’t really tell why, but it feels OFF. Since everything 3D is pretty much using raytracing, every reflection, refraction, shadow and ambient occlusion makes any object have an impact on the final result.

Once I heard that a sound designer had to create the sound of an eye blinking, which in real life doesn't make any sound at all. But when I met a sound designer he said that "if the sound is there, the viewer won't notice it. However if the sound isn't there, the viewer will notice it's not." I think it's a similar case in vfx. They created a detailed city covered in fog so the audience notices it only subconsciously, had it not been there, it would've looked noticeably poor. Good thing they won an oscar though lol

Whenever you have overlap of the border of a green screen and the area above it, it's often times easier just to rotoscope the whole thing because of dealing with the edge between the screen and not the screen. A lot of those scenarios with half green screens were very useless.

I mean we don't necessairly notice it at first glance but vfx artists have to be very meticoulis about every frame. Otherwise we feel like something is off. The exposure of a frame and our perception of details is being processed on a subconcious level. But still one should not renounce any minutea just because it seems too ornate.

George R OK. Let's calm down a smidge. First off, you didn't like the movie, couldn't find one thing in that 3hrs that you did like and that's okay. I might have fan boyed a little hard earlier, watching all the amazing work being displayed here and was just excited to be back in that world again. Lastly, I'm still excited nonetheless to watch this on whatever medium it happens to be on, DVD/Blu-ray/VHS/media- streaming or Torrent.

Honestly I'm so sick of people saying CGI sucks, its gotten to the point now where the movie makers go to painstaking lengths to talk about how much of the movie is practical props to help market the movie. These CGI in-house showreels show truly what incredible imagery can be done entirely virtually. CGI when done right is magical.

Um . . . sorry to sound stupid, but I am. Okay, so I'll just ask it: how is it you DO what it is YOU DO? How do you create such incredibly lifelike, imaginative, GORGEOUS things? Is it black magic??? It's black wizard magic, isn't it? Yeah, that's what I thought. The special effects / cinematography in this film were SUPERFLUOUSLY good. I actually couldn't pay attention to the PLOT, I was hypnotized by the images onscreen. Thank you so much for that. It's a rare accomplishment. A masterstroke.

People seem to be complaining about the city being covered in dust or fog. The point is you need that detail for any little bit that does show. You don't just want boxes and angles. It actually makes sense to have the detail because without it, it would look cheesy. Great effects and great ideas! Very inspirational for those that appreciate what's going on.
