Cora's comment makes me think the Red Sox were definitely bunting for a hit and that this was not meant to be a sacrifice bunt. He didn't own the mistake or give some dumb explanation of trying to stay out of the double play for both Chang and the batter on deck, he credited the fielder for not letting Chang fool them with the bunt.

Cora's decision to have Chang do a sacrifice bunt in the top of the 9th while down 2 runs makes no sense. Even as a Rays fan, I would've understood Cora sending in a pinch hitter. With that said, I'm glad the Red Sox left downtown St. Petersburg with another few Ls!

I think they were going for the element of surprise and going for a bunt hint.

The fact Cora commented on the third baseman making the play suggests to me that he was hoping the bunt would fool the Rays and that Chang would beat it out for a hit. But that would only make it a little less bad of a play. The Rays are too good to be fooled like that. If you're playing Oakland, sure. Make them execute. But do that against Tampa and you're getting executed.

It actually makes sense to me considering you had Hernandez, Verdugo, and Devers after him. I would rather have them come to bat as the tying run rather than risk bases empty and 2 outs

The only way a bunt makes sense is for a base hit. Drag it between the pitcher and first baseman.

So I love your videos, but this one is flawed. While it would be a dumb decision to sacrifice bunt, that wasn't the call Cora made. Chang was supposed to be bunting for a hit. Chang didn't execute the bunt well, and Wells made a heads up okay. How do I know this, well Cora said that in his post game press conference, just before the comment of "It was a good baseball play". Also, you state that the Red Sox should have pinch hit for Chang using anyone. So who were the only players (excluding pitchers) that were on the roster on April 12 and were still eligible to hit? Yoshida, Refsnyder, and Arroyo. The problem there: Yoshida got hurt on the 11th, and still hasn't played since then. Refsnyder was batting .158 on April 12th (.148 today) and Arroyo was batting .176 on April 12 (.171 today). Either way, you are replacing a batter who hasn't been hitting well this year with another player who hasn't been hitting well. If you still want to go "with anybody else", the. You have to include pitchers - and not even the national league wants to see that happening anymore; excluding Shoei Ohtani who is not on the Red Sox roster. Given the situation, the bunt for a hit (something the Rays did earlier in the game against Chris Sake) isn't as dumb as a decision as it seems.

Its done to avoid the double play pal. You usually kill but dont agree here. Remember baseball can change with one swing. You da man!

I thought the same thing, but if you're concerned about that, just pinch-hit. ETA: I had paused the video right before he said exactly the same thing. But with this guy's offense, I wonder if wanted his glove in the game in case they tied it up.
