Drums Built Like LEGOS - Sugar Percussion's Magic Formula
I love drums. I love LEGOs. Why wouldn't it pump me up to play a drum that's built like a bunch of building blocks?! 🥁

Sugar Percussion makes some of the coolest stave drums today--both snare drums and full sets. Builder Jefferson Shallenberger isn't just an incredible drum maker. The bulk of his work involves creating some of the most beautiful wood furniture you've ever seen. And beyond his craftsmanship, he's just one of the kindest guys in the musical instrument industry. Today, I'll be looking at a 14x6" cedar snare drum that he built in about 2020.
Stave construction snares have been a mainstay of the industry for so many years, with builders like Brady Drums making some of the best snares of this type EVER. Pearl Drums continues to create mass-produced drums in this construction today, but it's the small builders that really seem to shine. Todd Sucherman SWEARS by Stanbridge Drums, which are nearly impossible to find. If I get my hands on one, you know I'm going to make a video about it! Other brands like Doc Sweeney, Philadelphia Drum Company, Tamburo in Italy, and more continue to carry on the craft too - so there are ample opportunities for you to get into stave drums whenever you're ready for a THICK drum sound!
In this video, I used Turkish Cymbals 15" Millennium Hi Hats, 20 and 22" Meta Brilliant Crashes, and a 22" Millennium Ride in this video too!
Some of the music I played drums to in this video comes from my drumless tracks, available at slouxrecordingco.bandcamp.com/ . The tracks include volume 2 track 14, volume 2 track 7, volume 2 track 2, and volume 1 track 6.
Audio was captured with two Universal Audio Apollo x8p interfaces using 1073 preamp modeling. Mics include:
- SE Electronics V-Kick (Kick In) - Beyer Dynamic Opus 65 (Kick Out)
- Shure Unidyne III SM57 (Snare Top)
- Rode NT55 w/ Cardioid Capsule (Snare Top)
- Audio-Technica ATM650 (Snare Bottom)
- Sennheiser MD-421 (Each Tom)
- AKG C414 TLII Pair (Overheads)
- Apex 210B Ribbon into Soyuz Launcher (Room)
- Shure 588SB (Vocal)
I use Logic Pro X, Waves Audio plugins, and I enjoy consuming salted potato chips.
And that cool mic cable? It comes from Sorry Cables in LA. - www.sorrycables.com/

It's pretty wild how much body and resonance is retained on these drums at lower pitches. It's makes this snare ALMOST as cool as comic sans. hahaha

I love those drums. Jeff sent me a broken one (Thankd FedEx lol) a while back to play around with and to make some silly videos with. And even though it was broken, it was still one of the best sounding wood snares I've ever heard in my life. Pretty wild!

Some of the best and unique sounding snares I have are Brady stave snares. This Sugar Percussion snare sounds awesome too. Who would've thought Cedar? Hamsters?
@timbofromkeno

Hamsters thought they had the cedar market to themselves. Think again! hahaha But seriously, one of these days, I want to get my hands on some Brady drums because all I hear are good things about them.

Oh man what a drum! I usually lean towards mid to high tunings, just my personal tonal preference, however that things sounds amazing in a low tuning, soo much body and great clarity 🥵 Oooo yes another great vid dood 👌

Thanks Tim. I appreciate ya!!
I agree about the session drummers using it, in particular the Sugar Painted Poplar 14 x 5. Darn expensive for a simple looking Poplar shell snare. But now you know why ! 😜

The other drum Sugar sent me at one point was a broken 14x5 poplar (because we had plans on destroying it for entertainment purposes lol), but that drum sounded sooooo good until the crack in the shell (thanks FedEx) got so big it killed the resonance. That's a desert island drum. You could literally do anything you want with it. It's just wild.

@@timbofromkeno Did you try using some "Tight bond" and clamps or was the crack not visible ? These things go for $600-$700 used ! Luv your channel, keep em' coming Timbo 🤘

@@dilankarun9172 I didn’t, but part of the deal I had in getting the drum was that I would ruin it for the world to see. 😂😂😂
Lovely snare drum! Any drummer with a snare like that wouldn't need another? Had no idea what Comic Sans was and misread it as Cosmic Sans. Did a search and ended up watching some funky tune on YT, had a nice drum part. So UV1's on the bottoms this time, all sounding great and due in no small part to the player. Nice vid, where can I find some recipes. Bunlimited dogs for lunch the other day, among the best.

Did you get a chance to do any video of the sugar poplar snare before it died? id love to hear what that drum sounded like. The cedar kills in this vid!! i already have my eallet out!! lol

I wish I’d thought about doing a long form video of that poplar snare early on. Unfortunately, I just have a few covers of stuff on my Instagram with that drum. I’ll have to work up a little compilation of that stuff for KZread in the future!
I'm a well known Sugar fan boy and could wax rhapsodically for hours but all that aside, your kick drum sounds so good and punchy. What are we dealing with here? Any deets you can divulge would be killer - heads, beater, muffling or is it all just compression??
@JamieStrowhiro

Well that's what I get for commenting before I finish. Onyx emad! (Still curious if there's any other muffling going on)
@timbofromkeno
Жыл бұрын
@@JamieStrowhiro hahaha You got it. I have a Gibraltar felt strip on the reso head to dampen those overtones plus a few t-shirts inside the drum. I use the Vic Firth VKB5 beater, and I tend to play with a pretty heavy foot. Tuning-wise, I'll typically go medium-high on the resonant head and medium-low on the batter head. Then it's all miking and plugins. I run an SE V-Kick in the port and a Beyer Opus 65 outside. The V-Kick gets heavy compression via the Waves JJP-Drums plugin, and the Opus 65 gives me the mid and low oomph with a little help from CLA Drums and some other EQ stuff.

I've got a coupe! I really like the Promark Rebound 5A (Hickory) and the Promark Finesse 2B (Maple) stick. I'll use the 5A for an all around stick, and when I need help getting through LOUD drumming passages, I'll pull out the maple 2Bs.

@@timbofromkeno sure, but I'd rather a ply drum, or solid steam bent. In a blindfold test I probably wouldn't know one from the other, but just in terms of construction, I prefer the traditionally made drums. They inspire me more than playing on a barrel.
