I bought a Zildjian K dry ride cymbal in about 1990 and the salesman said "you're gonna break hearts with that."' He was right. It just cut through everything, eventually I sold it for more than I paid and I don't drum anymore after accumulating too much hearing damage. It was too dark to crash and had a beautiful bell sound. There're two ways I contextualized the term 'dry' with respect to cymbals. The first was by pouring things into a bowl - if you pour water, it sloshes around and takes forever to settle and is really active, but if you pour like sand or something, it just kinda sits there. The other one was farts. Wet ones gonna be noticeable for a lot longer for everyone involved, and you need to washy your pants afterward.

Can I just say, I subbed specifically because I love this guy's energy. He has the energy of Mr Beast, lacks any oversaturated sarcasm, doesn't have the dry feel of watching a video essay (KZreadrs who have the feel in their voice where you can tell it is being read off of a script, like a lack of confidence) and honestly, you can audibly track the passion in this man's voice. This guy just loves cymbals, and he shows it so confidently. I love this guy, instant sub. Also, I love the addition of the old timey music. The old music that you get in 1940's TV ads combined with this guy's voice and the chaos that occurs in this video is such an entertaining mix. It feels like it should be a serious lecture about cymbals and what it means when someone calls one dry or washy, but the chaos and the inflection of this guy make it sound more genuine and passionate. In conclusion, this video is a great example of a good video essay, it feels loved, passionate, upbeat, and energetic, as if this guy just really fucking loves cymbals and he uploaded this video and made this channel specifically to show us that. God-tier video, 8194/10.

I don't know much about cymbals, but I do understand some physics. I think the reason one cymbal sounding more dry than the other "identical" one is because the more dry cymbal has a lot of smaller pits, absorbing the vibrations faster. The difference is very visible.

I have two with the original hammering pattern. I love them. I did a cover gig with it and after that gig I used it on a straight ahead jazz gig. The guitarist really liked it and even asked what it was. I've even used it on metal gigs, and it still managed to be heard. I'll usually throw the Dry Dark Ride up for those situations. Those Dry Rides have been my go to since 2015. I've used either of them on the tracks that I appear on for former Talk Show (STP side project) singer, Dave Coutts. The song Teargas In August is where I play my "studio" ride, but I think I used my "road" Dry Ride for the others that I'm on. Very versatile cymbal for sure!

I have to say, I love that 21" special dry part 2, the crash is for crash, the china is for crash, the open high hat is for crash, the ride is for tone. I’ve never paid attention enough to realize the HUGE difference there is between cymbal sounds. It seems like it comes down to flat/sharp or sustain/mute. But that’s just how I translate the difference. I like the flatter, more muted sound for a ride (more than I expected). Evidently there’s a reason why there are crash cymbals and ride cymbals. I just figured I could hit a ride harder and substitute for a crash. Now I see the error of my ways.

Hope someone is still playing it now.

I’ve literally watched the OG multiple times, and yet. And yet. Every single time I hear the Holy Bonk, I let out a single HA of amazement. It is SO BONK
Had an ancient cymbal about as dry as the last one back in HS. It was completely normal looking, asides from it being so coated in dust from the back of the drum closet that you could not clean it off. Brought out for a jazz rehearsal once. Director and the rest of the band said to never do that again.

Well, it's wet because the sound lasts longer travelling further and dry because sounds travel less leaving a more bonk or think sound! It's awesome we use it in pianos too!
Often times when I am playing drums with my band I wish I could play bass or guitar instead so I could move around the stage and stuff, I can play bass so sometimes being a Drummer at a gig feels really limited, but this channel makes me feel proud to be a Drummer honestly, every time I watch one of these videos drums don't feel limiting anymore and I remember I CAN play drums while having fun, even if I'm not moving around.

I know nothing about drums, hell ive never even hit a drum, but Frank kept me here and I'm glad I stayed to the end.
The Paiste Signature Dry Ride is exceptionally dry as well, although that Zildjian might have it beat. The Paiste has a ridiculously clean and clear bell though, so if you're looking for stick definition and a great bell, find one of those (have fun finding one though, they've been discontinued for a long time!).

You wanna be able to tell that if you smash a crash and ride together, you can hear the difference. Like, the ride is the bass cymbal of cymbals so it's gotta thud and swim.
6:08 it's nice to hear Frank's opinion, we need more of her opinion

seriously, the dry cymbal just gives that professional beat sound. emphasis on the kick and snare, and you only hear the stick clicking. makes it more hiphop in a way.
Been playing for 45 years, professionally for a a living for 8 of those. Your vids are spot on mate. I’ve tried all the Cymbals. I still believe Zildjian is best and decided the 21” Sweet Ride is the most versatile though my fav is the original Earth Ride….

(as someone that has no experience with drums or playing music) it feels like the dry ones have less depth to the noise, and the bright onehas more depth, more echoing, the noise lasts longer and changes more, from what i can tell anyway
The special never fails to make me laugh

I've noted, the drier they are, the more they sound like a metal barrel full of water, it has the sort of reverb sound water in a can makes, and I hella dig it
"The BONK Zone." Made me die laughing 😆
I’ve never paid attention enough to realize the HUGE difference there is between cymbal sounds. It seems like it comes down to flat/sharp or sustain/mute. But that’s just how I translate the difference. I like the flatter, more muted sound for a ride (more than I expected). Evidently there’s a reason why there are crash cymbals and ride cymbals. I just figured I could hit a ride harder and substitute for a crash. Now I see the error of my ways.
That last one sounds like you're playing the lid of a metal trash can.
the special just sounds like an actual kitchen pan
