Most people don’t realize Timbo is a war hero. It was 67, I was in a small club outside Danang where I stopped in for a Cheryle Temple. Timbo was playing with the house band opening for the New Jazz Underground. One thing leads to another and a fight breaks out. a grenade falls to the floor with no pin. Without missing a beat, young Timbo launches himself over the kit and covers that bitch with his supperfonic! He saved a bunch of lives that night. Unfortunately the snare didn’t make it or his hair, he got the Purple Heart and a bunch of mean scars. Keep on rocking in the free world Major Timbo!

I own a Tama AW106 Birch snare with a "Chrome wrap" and "Bow Tie" lugs and "Mighty Hoops". It's a FRIKIN powerhouse! You're right, if you crank it, it cuts! also to add a lot of "Gospel chops" is more of a brand than sound...As far as the ideas, a lot of it came from a lot of fusion players such as Dennis Chambers, Will Kennedy, Vinnie Colaiuta,Weckl and Gary Novak to name a few. Love the clips man!!!

I never understood those thick wood snares.. You really have to know what you are doing with them.. Very interesting points and tipson this! Just as remark.. Jay Weinberg's 48ply (with 2" vent holes) is just ridiculous on paper 😅 .. But without a doubt it stands its ground in their mix..

You’ve got a keen eye! It’s a 14x8” Artwood Rosewood drum-super rare and super LOUD! 😂😂😂 There’s gonna be a video up about it in the next month or two. And I wish I could take credit for owning this drum, but it is on loan from Turkish Cymbals USA. They’ve lent me some super cool stuff recently!!

Dunno. Since it's probably not going to be through my skillz, I try to find a way to standout through having a unique sound. Oddball gear fits into this, and trying to make it work in context. Don't know if that makes me more of an instrumentalist or musician, but you can't innovate without having some fantastic failures along the way.

You've got some great thoughts here! I love the idea that "you can't innovate without having some fantastic failures along the way." That's certainly been the case for me. I played out live in bands for more than a decade and a half, and I found that I was so unhappy at the end of it, and I really hadn't been able to find more success than a local musician could. So, I went online and posted videos to social media. And the audio in some of those videos made me cringe. And even today, I'm learning more and more about how to craft a better video on KZread from video to video. 15+ years of live playing set the foundation for my creative outlet (music). Putting out videos online birthed my remote session career, and both of those experiences pushed me to up my audio AND video game. And having to pivot again and again through the course of it all has helped me understand that continuing to learn and continuing to grow are just a part of the process... and failure is constantly there to help us improve too. So, big ups to you on bringing that up!

Timbo, great videos for us old farts that want to play drums. I really like your hands. Question, have you ever reviewed those Gretsch snare drums that are like an inch thick, and staved? I have the cherry model, I love cherry anything, but I think they made an oak and maybe walnut.

Thanks Jerome! Man, I know about those Gretsch stave drums, but I've never played one. I did a video on some stave shells from Handshake Drums, and those were fantastic. But I'll tell you, the ones I really want to try - Brady Drums. They were generally made from woods that you can only find in Australia. 10 years ago, you could find a snare used for 1,000-1,200 bucks. And I just looked on eBay this morning by chance, and most folks are asking like 4,000 bucks a pop. I couldn't believe it. But I hear they sound THAT good!

I want to hear that snare with newer heads. I get that the old heads kinda give it that tone. But new heads can bring out a new life out of that snare with different tuning. This is just my opinion. But I think the drum is being choked.

I totally agree on the new heads thing! I just don't have the money to do that with every drum. lol One day! But funny enough, as far as the pitch thing is concerned and how that might affect things, I posted picture of this drum to some Facebook groups the other day...and you know what the consensus was from everyone who owned these things (regardless of depth)? They didn't like them at low tunings. lol So, at least it wasn't just me having that problem. Hearing that made me feel a lot better. 🤣

@@garrettguadiana1327 LOL You're too funny. I'm an Evans artist, so I gotta stick with that stuff. I did invest in some heads recently to start putting on these loaner drums as they come in, so I promise I'm going to do my best to swap the batter heads for new ones from now on! 🤣🤣🤣

Love the equipment videos but you should definitely do some vids on your playing, too.
