That’s a beautiful Ludwig kit! I did the same thing to a 1972 Rogers kit back in the late 1990s. I recovered the ugly and damaged white wrapped finish with a beautiful black diamond pearl finish and had the bearing edges trued by a legendary drum craftsman in San Diego. It’s the best sounding drum kit I’ve ever owned. It sounded so good, I ended up selling my Yamaha recording custom kit. Gotta love American vintage drums.

@@timbofromkeno I was surprised too, but the more I’ve learned about Rogers over the years it started making sense. I believe the guy who did the bearing edges was Richard Bleifus (not sure if I spelled his name correctly). Sometimes I wish I had the Yamaha kit still. It was s ridiculous setup: (2) 22 inch bass drums, 8”, 10”, 12”, 13”, and 14” toms, a 16” floor tom and a 14x8 deep snare all in the black piano lacquer finish. The toms were all power toms, but their dimensions weren’t quite as deep as some of the other brands of the time. Funny, I just saw your video with your red Recording Customs and it made me nostalgic. Cheers!! And keep up the great work!!!

Timbo, thank you for yet another fun and informative post. A few years ago, a friend of mine wanted his drums out of his garage and all I had to do was get them gone. I found out that they were Ludwig drums. They were champagne pink sparkle. The snare was metal, there were 2 rack toms, 12” and 13”. The floor tom was 16”. They were stamped Mar. 4, 1966. They came with Tama 14” hat cymbals, a 20”, 18”, and a 16” Ludwig/Paiste cymbal. They didn’t have a very good sound. Here’s the bad news;there was no bass drum. He couldn’t for the life of him recall what happened to it. I looked for over a year to find a matching bass drum and was only able to find one, and it was over $800.00 and then there was quite a shipping charge. I ended up piecing the set out and selling it on eBay getting a bit over $1100.00. I took that money and bought a used 4 piece Mapex set with 5 Sabian cymbals. That set cost me $400.00. I have added more toms and a side snare making my set a 10 piece set for a total cost of less than $600.00. Maybe I should have kept that Ludwig set. I guess it’s too late now though. Wild story, Greg. There’s no right or wrong choice with this stuff. Does the Mapex kit bring you joy? Then I’d say it’s a great kit and it’s doing exactly what it needs to do. And hopefully the folks who bought those parts and pieces from that Ludwig kit enjoy whatever they bought from you too!

@@timbofromkeno Ah you have a good eye. That is a 24 inch Yamaha Oak Custom. I used that for years. HEAVY as hell! Yamaha is the just amazing and the oaks make such powerful bass drums. But I ran a 22X14 3ply Ludwig kick for so long. It was the perfect tone! It could do anything. Retractable spurs sucked but it sounded so good.

@@Garagedrummer Dude, I love those Oak Custom drums. I had an original '03-'04 gold badge MIJ kit in the Matte Sedona Red color for a long time. They're some of the loudest drums I've ever heard. 🤣

@@timbofromkenoYeah the oaks are loud! I ran that kick drum in blue sparkle and a birch custom floor tom in silver sparkle. Snare was a Jimmy Chamberlain steel. That set up could wake the dead!

Killer set and playing as always Tim! Ludwig had an incredible roster of artists in the 60's 70's! Mitch Mitchell, Ian paice and so on! There's a reason why 3 plys are so sought after and you nailed it!

Thanks! I’m an Evans artist, so anything I do with new heads I do with their stuff only. I’ll be doing a video featuring a bunch of different snare head options soon, though, so keep an eye out!

Played drums on my first studio recording on one of these kits. It was at the old Mushroom Studios in Vancouver. I'll never forget that day. I came in with my big Sonor Force 3005 Black Sparkle Kit(24/18/16/12/13/), and Pearl Ultracast Snare, and the Engineers like just so you know we're using a different kit, and Snare(Supraphonic). I didn't complain at all, and there was something about them too, not sure what it was, but they just felt so effortless to play, sounded so good, and I banged the album off with one or two takers.

You have a really good attitude to accept playing a totally different kit after hauling that massive Sonor over there. Hahahaha Was the Ludwig kit just two toms and a kick too? Or did it have all the toms to match your personal kit?

@@timbofromkeno Ya, so it actually worked out really good because it had the two rack tom's, the 14 floor, the kick, so all that was missing was the second floor tom which I could totally take or leave, and it wouldn't change how any of my parts were played. I basically just used it sometimes to hit along with the 16", or sometimes instead, and I was always switching live between having the 18" and not. I totally remember thinking the 14" was a bit small, but the drum tech tuned it up, and when I heard him play it I just remember going holy shit, and I remember thinking how huge it sounded for a 14". I do also remember taping my finger up with cheap scotch tape near the end, because I split my finger open on the Snare. Think I got some blood on the heads/kit too lol, oops. Red Silver Sparkle? Agreed about the 70’s ludwig being one of the best sounding drum sounds out there. I have a large kit with 24” kick and a bop sized kit, both B/O badge 70’s 3-ply. Had the bop kit edges re-done and rings for days. One day I’ll have the large kit edges done as well.

Hey! Thanks for the kind words. Yes, it's a two-ply head on the resonant side. For me, it brings out some extra low end from my smaller 20" kick and I get a little bit of pleasant dampening over a one-ply head. It might be worth trying!

WFL and the early 60s Ludwig stuff is exactly that! By the late sixties, they switched to Maple/Poplar/Maple.

THEY WOULD SOUND A LOT BETTER WITH REMO DRUM HEADS BUT OVER ALL SOUNDS OK

To each their own. Have you tried Evans stuff the last year or two? They’ve made a TON of changes to their products. And they might sound a little different to the ear at first, but under mics, these heads are tremendous.

No recut here. Just gentle massaging to endure they’re complete in round while maintaining the original profile. Old trucks get tuneups. Old historical homes get restored. Old things need a little love to ensure we can keep using them. And this is the same kind of deal. : )
